HOTELS: There are many hotels within the area, ranging from four star to excellent Bed and Breakfast accommodation, a list of which may be found on page 4 of the catalogue.

CONDITIONS OF SALE: This Sale is held subject to the conditions of Sale drawn up by the NBA and the Auctioneers’ General Conditions of Sale, both available on request. In the event of any discrepancy between the two sets of conditions, the NBA Conditions of Sale shall prevail.

INSURANCE: A representative of H&H Insurance Brokers, will be present at the sale and will be pleased to quote Purchasers for transit and other risks.

METHOD OF SALE: All cattle will be sold in guineas (105 pence) and strictly in catalogue order, unless any alteration is announced by the Auctioneers.

COMMISSIONS: The Auctioneers will dutifully execute commissions to purchase for buyers unable to attend the sale personally, upon receipt of written instructions.

REGISTRATIONS: All stock in the Sale are registered with the respective breed societies.

TRANSFERS: BLONDE CATTLE: a fee of £15 + VAT per lot will be charged to the Purchaser.

HEREFORD CATTLE: a fee of £24 + VAT will be charged to the Vendor. SIMMENTAL CATTLE: all transfers will be automatically processed for all members of the Society.

UPSET PRICE: A minimum selling price will apply as follows for the respective breeds: BLONDE CATTLE 2000gns on each bull; SIMMENTAL CATTLE 2000gns on each bull.

SETTLEMENT AND CLEARANCE OF STOCK: Settlement in full is due immediately at the close of Sale. No animal may leave the Sale Premises without an official ‘Pass Slip’, obtainable only from the Auctioneers upon settlement.

ANIMAL WELFARE: Vendors and Purchasers should note the CODE OF PRACTICE published by the Livestock Auctioneers’ Market Committee for England and Wales IS OPERATIVE IN BORDERWAY MART and that weakly, unhealthy or injured stock will be refused entry by the Auctioneers. Enquiries should be directed through the market office to the Auctioneers’ ANIMAL HEALTH and WELFARE OFFICER (Mr Andrew Templeton).

WEIGHTS & HEIGHTS - All bulls will be weighed by Officials and the Official weights will be displayed above each pen.

All Bulls entered for the Sale, MUST BE ADEQUATELY TRAINED TO LEAD BY HALTER and must be provided with a serviceable halter, which will become the property of the purchaser. All other show animals must be halter led.

TATTOO MARKS/UK TAGS - All cattle entered for the Sale will have their tatoo marks/ UK Tags examined. Any marks found to have faulty, incorrect or illegible marks will be REJECTED from the Sale. Vendors are therefore urged, in their own best interests, to examine the tattoo marks of Sale cattle before the animal(s) leave their farm, so that faulty marks can be rectified in accordance with the required Society procedures.

CATTLE PASSPORTS: Please ensure all passport documentation is handed to the Market Sale Office upon arrival. Failure to do so or if for any reason the paperwork does not correspond to the cattle being offered for sale, such animals will not be put forward for the auction.

The proceeds of sale are guaranteed by the Auctioneers, who will account to Vendors on the day of the Sale. Such guarantee, however, does not extend to the animals sold for export, to which special conditions apply.

SOCIETY SALE LEVY: Will be charged on the following breeds and deducted from the Vendor’s statement before settlement and paid direct to the respective breed society.

BLONDE CATTLE 2%; SIMMENTAL CATTLE 1½ %.

RESERVE PRICES: Vendors shall have the right to refuse to accept the final bid for their animals. The auctioneers reserve the right to charge half commission on the amount of the final bid in the case of animals which fail to reach the Vendors reserve price.

All animals will be sold in guineas (105 pence) and a commission of 5% will be charged by the Auctioneers on all sales. No animals may be sold privately before being passed through the Auction Ring and FULL COMMISSION will be charged on the sale of any animal sold by private treaty after the auction. All such transactions MUST BE PASSED THROUGH THE AUCTIONEERS’ OFFICE.

BLONDE SALE – Notice to Vendors PRE-SALE INSPECTION: All animals entered for the sale must be available for inspection in the Sale Premises as per the timetable of events. An Official Inspector, appointed by the Sale Society may order the rejection of any animal which, in his opinion, is below the required standard of conformation and / or condition and does not represent a good specimen of the Breed.

IF THE INSPECTORS CONSIDER THERE HAS BEEN ANY PRE-INSPECTION PREPERATION DESIGNED TO DISGUISE AN UNACCEPTABLE CONDITION THAT ANIMAL WILL BE REJECTED. VETERINARY INSPECTION: The Veterinary Officer will examine all animals forward for general, health and genetic defects, and any animal with a genetic fault, disease or disorder will be REJECTED. Animals will be placed in a crush for this inspection - as required by the Veterinary Officer. The Veterinary Inspection will form an integral part of the pre-sale inspection procedure.

ANY ANIMAL REJECTED DURING THE PRE-SALE INSPECTION WILL BE OFFERED IN SALE ORDER, BUT ONLY AT THE AUCTIONEERS DISCRETION. CARDS WILL BE DISPLAYED ABOVE ALL REJECTED STOCK WITH REASON FOR REJECTION. ALL BULLS - entered for the Sale MUST HAVE ACHIEVED A MINIMUM WEIGHT OF 500KG AT THE TIME OF SALE and Vendors will be responsible for the provision of certification of such minimum weight to the Panel of Inspectors, if required. The Panel may order any bull to be weighed in the sale premises. Vendors are also reminded that “All bulls over the age of 12 months shall be ringed”.

All animals must be adequately trained to lead by halter, and all females must be equipped with nose clips and additionally the inspectors have been instructed to reject any female showing poor or doubtful temperament. Evidence of faults of temperament, vices, etc., may lead to disqualification. The Showing of Bulls is Not Compulsory.

IDENTIFICATION MARKS - The identification marks of all animals will be examined in the Sale Premises and any animal found to have faulty or illegible marks will be rejected from the Sale. Vendors are therefore recommended to check carefully the identification marks of all their entries WELL IN ADVANCE of the Sale, and to advise the Society in the event of any fault being found.

THE ATTENTION OF VENDORS IS DRAWN TO THE SOCIETY’S RULE BY WHICH NO ANIMAL ONCE CATALOGUED MAY BE WITHDRAWN FROM THE SALE WITHOUT GOOD REASON, ACCEPTABLE TO THE COUNCIL.

Profit from EBVS A great new tool is now available to beef producers and breeders to help them select productive breeding animals with confidence. This development comes as part of MLC’s “Beef breeder” Service.

Records on breeding animals are now presented as ESTIMATED BREEDING VALUES (EBVs) and these describe the animal and how it will breed. EBVs are the recognised method for describing beef cattle performance and are now widely used in many leading cattle countries.

EBVs are quoted in the measuring units e.g. kg.

These are various key features:

All Comparisons are against a base figure for the breed. The average

l

of the breed in 1980 was chosen, where the average is described as zero.

Any animal with a plus value is above the breed base (heavier, fatter,

l

more muscled, etc.) and any animal with a minus value is below the breed base (lighter, less fat or less muscular, etc.)

The EBVs are built up from records on the animal concerned, its

l

parents, offspring (if any) and other relatives. So, they are very robust. Using EBVs takes out the confusing effects of different managements, herds, seasons and years, so that animals can be compared across a breed with confidence.

Measures with very low (less than 20 per cent) levels of accuracy are not published.

DEFINITION

Level 1:

This is directly equivalent to the previous CheCS Accredited free status.

Level 1 status is associated with the lowest risk source when buying in stock. Health plan required.

Level 2:

Herds with Level 2 status have had one or two clear consecutive herd tests.

Health plan required.

Level 3:

Herds with Level 3 status have reactors identified at the annual herd test, but these are no more than 3% of the animals tested. Health plan required.

Level 4:

Herds with Level 4 status have reactors identified at the annual herd test, and these amount to more than 3% of the animals tested. Health plan required.

Level 5:

Any herd that is not carrying out the required testing or does not have a suitable health plan in place automatically falls into this category. Level 5 status is considered to be the greatest risk source when buying in stock.

SIMMENTAL SALE – Notice to Vendors PRE-SALE INSPECTION: Every animal will be subject to a full breed and veterinary inspection and every animal entered for the sale must be inspected in the Sales premises by the appointed Inspector, on the day of the Sale. Animals infected by the contagious diseased ringworm etc, will not be accepted for sale unless accompanied by a vet’s certificate indicating that treatment has been given and the condition is no longer contagious. The inspection will be co-ordinated by the stewards who will require animals to be brought before the appointed inspector. The inspectors decision will be final and binding. Any animal which fails any part of the pre-sale inspection, will have their ticket red spray marked. These animals will be eligible to remain in their allocated pens but must not have their spray marked numbers removed. Any vendor or his representative failing to comply with this will be subject to disciplinary action by the Society.

Any animal not meeting their weight for age on inspection or that are rejected on veterinary grounds are NOT allowed to go forward for sale.

TATTOO MARKS/UK TAGS - All cattle entered for the Sale will have their tattoo marks/UK Tags examined as an integral part of the pre sale inspection procedure. Any marks found to have faulty, incorrect or illegible marks will be REJECTED from the Sale. Vendors are therefore urged, in their own best interests, to examine the tattoo marks of Sale cattle before the animal(s) leave their farm, so that faulty marks can be rectified in accordance with the required Society procedures.

DNA TYPING OF STATED SIRES WHEN SELLING FEMALES IN CALF - It will be the Vendor’s responsibility to have a Sire DNA typed if the vendor is selling Females in-calf to a stated sire.

If the Sire is no longer available and has not been DNA typed it is the Vendor’s responsibility to declare this in the Sales catalogue. (This rule also applies to Private Sales).

To clarify: if a Sire is not DNA typed the Society cannot register his progeny. To obtain a sire profile without the sire, 5 progeny and their dams have to be DNA typed, this is 10 DNA profiles at a cost of £23.10 each. The purchaser must be made aware by the vendor of the potential registration problems and costs.

UNDERSTANDING THE BREEDPLAN PERFORMANCE RECORDING INFORMATION IN THIS CATALOGUE Only British Simmental GROUP BREEDPLAN EBVs or INTERIM EBVs with Accuracy (Acc) can be validly compared between herds.

ESTIMATED BREEDING VALUES (EBVS)

The EBV is the best estimate of an animal's genetic merit for that trait and they are to be used as a tool to assist in the selection of sires, the visual appearance remains very important.

ACCURACY

An accuracy value is presented with every EBV and gives an indication of the amount of information that has been used in the calculation of that EBV. The higher the accuracy the lower the likelihood of change in the animal's EBV as more information is analysed for that animal or it's relatives.

CALVING EASE

Calving Ease EBVs are based on calving difficulty scores, birth weights and gestation length information. More positive EBVs are favourable and indicate easier calving.

DIR: Direct calving ease indicates how this animal influences the birth of its progeny.

Calving Ease (DIR) EBVs are estimates of genetic differences in the ability of a sire’s calves to be born unassisted from 2 year old heifers.

The EBVs are reported as differences in the percentage of unassisted calvings.

Higher, more positive, Calving Ease (DIR) EBVs are more favourable.

For example, a bull with an EBV of +5.0% would be expected, on average, to produce 3% fewer difficult calvings from 2 year old heifers than a bull with an EBV of –1.0% (6% difference between the sires, then halved as they only contribute half the genetics). Cow condition is a significant factor on the ability and ease of calving. Continued use of sires with easy calving may reduce the size of the cows and average pelvic area in the herd DTRS: Daughter’s calving ease indicates how well the animal produces daughters that have easier calving.

Calving Ease (DTRS) EBVs are estimates of genetic differences in the ability of a sire’s daughters to calve at 2 years of age without assistance. The EBVs are also reported as differences in the percentage of unassisted calvings.

Higher, more positive, Calving Ease (DTRS) EBVs are more favourable.

For example, a bull with an EBV of +4.0% would be expected to on average produce daughters that have 3% less calving problems when calving at 2 years of age than the daughters of a bull with an EBV of – 2.0%.

BIRTH AND FERTILITY

GL: Gestation Length EBV (days) is based on AI records. Lower (negative) GL EBVs indicate shorter gestation lengths which generally relate to easier calving and increased growth after birth. For example, a bull with

a Gestation Length EBV of –2 days would be expected to produce calves that are born earlier, and more easily, than a bull with a Gestation Length EBV of +2 days.

BWT: Birth Weight EBV (kg) is based on the measured birth weight of animals, adjusted for dam age. The lower the value the lighter the calf at birth and the lower the likelihood of a difficult birth. This is particularly

important when selecting sires for use over heifers. Birth Weight EBVs are

expressed in kilograms (kg) and are calculated based on weights of calves taken at birth. Small, or moderate, Birth Weight EBVs are more favourable. For example, a bull with a Birth Weight EBV of +2 kg would be expected to produce lighter calves at birth than a bull with a Birth Weight EBV of +6 kg, with a lower risk of a difficult birth.

Please note, whilst low Birth Weight EBVs are favoured for calving ease they are also generally associated with lower overall growth potential. Consequently, birth weight and growth need to be carefully balanced. Fortunately, animals can be found that have both moderate Birth Weight EBVs and above average EBVs for later growth.

SS: Scrotal Size EBV (cm) is an indicator of male fertility in regards to semen quality and quantity.Higher (positive) EBVs indicate higher fertility.

Increased scrotal circumference is associated with increased semen production in bulls, and earlier age at puberty of bull and heifer progeny. Increased scrotal circumference also has a favourable relationship with days to calving, such that bulls with larger scrotal circumference tend to have daughters with shorter days to calving. For example, a bull with a Scrotal Size EBV of +4 cm would be expected to produce sons with larger testicles at yearling age and daughters that reach puberty earlier than the progeny of a bull with a Scrotal Size EBV of -4 cm.

GROWTH

MILK: 200 Day Milk EBVs are estimates an animal's maternal

effect on the 200 day weight of its calf. In the case of sires, this estimates the maternal effect that his daughters will have on the 200 day weight of their progeny. The 200 Day Milk EBV is expressed as kilograms (kg) of calf live weight at 200 days (ie. the expected difference in the weight of the calf at 200 days due to the maternal effect (milk) of the cow). The 200 Day Milk EBV is calculated by

partitioning the difference in the 200 day weight of calves into growth and milk components.

The optimum level of milk production potential among beef cows is dependent upon the production system and environment in which the cows are run. Selection for increased milk production may be warranted when cows are run under good nutritional conditions and calves are sold as weaners. However, some environments may not support high milking cows.

Larger, more positive, 200 Day Milk EBVs are generally more favourable, depending on the environment. For example, a bull with a 200 Day Milk EBV of +15 kg would be expected to sire daughters with higher milk production than a bull with 200 Day Milk EBV of +5 kg. This higher milk production potential should be reflected through higher weaning weights among the daughter's calves.

200: 200-Day Growth EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of animals taken between 80 and 300 days of age. Values are adjusted to 200 days and for dam age. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal's genetic merit for growth to early ages.

400: 400-Day Weight EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 301 and 500 days of age, adjusted to 400 days and for dam age. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal's genetic merit for yearling weight.

600: 600-Day Weight EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 501 and 900 days of age, adjusted to 600 days and for dam age. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal's genetic merit for growth beyond yearling age.

CARCASE CWT: Carcase Weight EBV (kg) estimates the genetic difference in carcase weight at a standard age of 650 days.

EMA: Eye Muscle Area EBV (cm2) estimates genetic differences in eye muscle area of a 300kg dressed carcase. More positive EBVs indicate better muscling on animals. Larger, more positive, EMA EBVs are generally

more favourable. For example, a bull with an EMA EBV of +4 cm 2 would be expected to produce steer progeny with a greater degree of muscle expression than a bull with an EMA EBV of +1 cm2.

RIB: Rib Fat EBV (mm) estimates the genetic differences in fat depth at the rib in a 300kg dressed carcase. More positive EBVs indicate more subcutaneous fat and earlier maturity.

RBY%: Retail Beef Yield Percent EBV (%) represents total (boned out) meat yield as a percentage of a 300kg dressed carcase. A more positive EBV indicates higher percentage yield for the 300kg carcase size.

Terminal Index

The BSCS Terminal index is aimed at a commercial herd using Simmental bulls over large framed, mixed breed cows to breed steers and heifers to turn off at 16 months of age. All progeny are destined for slaughter and no replacement females are selected from within the herd. There is some emphasis on calving ease while finishing steers at around 630 kg live weight (335 kg carcase weight) using a pasture based production system supplemented with extra rations during the finishing phase.

Use this index in a commercial herd to produce progeny for slaughter. The index has moderate emphasis on easier calving (ie getting a live calf with minimal human interference) while producing calves that will then grow quickly to market specifications at around 16 months of age. The index is focused on slaughter animals and does not account for maternal traits and is therefore not suited to breeding replacement females.

If you are using smaller framed cows or heifers in your herd, then you should also put extra emphasis on a higher calving ease direct EBV when selecting a sire using this index.

Self Replacing Index

The BSCS Self Replacing index is aimed at a Simmental herd selecting replacement females from within the herd while breeding steers and excess heifers to turn off at 16 months of age. There is emphasis on calving ease and maternal traits while also looking to finish steers for slaughter at around 680 kg live weight (350 kg carcase weight) using a pasture based production system supplemented with extra rations during the finishing phase.

This Self Replacing index is also suitable to using Simmental sires over mixed breed cows where replacement females are sourced from within the herd.

There may be some hybrid vigour expressed in the progeny depending on the breed type of the cows used. Therefore you should consider placing extra emphasis on the Calving Ease EBVs (more positive) of the sire to allow for possible heavier birth weights of his calves due to hybrid vigour.

Use this index in both commercial and pedigree herds where you are balancing the requirements of selecting replacement females while also producing animals for slaughter.

Female Classification As from the autumn of 2016 the BSCS introduced a female classification programme which is voluntary for all breeders. The classification is split in to four categories; 1, Body confirmation 2, Beef character 3, Legs & feet 4, Mammary.

Classification assessments are carried out by independent assessors and will help ensure the best females which are structurally correct are used in breeding programmes.
