The Balbithan Herd Andrew and Beth White established the Balbithan herd during 1987, taking the name from a Castle in Scotland which was owned by family friends. The herd started with 4 females purchased from the Warninglid and Cullum Herds and from 1987 to 1992 numbers expanded with the purchase of 20 females from such noted herds as Brampton & Thrunton. In 1991 Jane Haw joined Andrew and Beth as their herd manager and their combined passion for the Charolais breed has seen the herd become, and remain, one of the best known in the country.

The herd is managed on a commercial basis overlooking the sea at home in Worth Matravers, Dorset. The aim has always been to breed a specific type of Charolais and the words that are consistently used to describe the females are genuine, powerful, graceful, correct, and consistent easy breeders with a good temperament. Figures have never played a large part of the herd’s history, preferring instead that the cattle speak for themselves and breeding has concentrated on producing cattle that perform well in both Pedigree and Commercial Herds with both bulls and females sold over the years throughout the south west, on a regular basis, as well as further afield.

It is fair to say that the Balbithan Herd is most noted for its female lines which have been named to reflect their origins. Those with “Country” names descend form the Royal Show Winning Nadia line. The “Sweetie” names all originate from Brampton Humbug dam of Balbithan Lollipop who herself bred 13 calves and had a major influence on the herd. The “Flowers” descend from both Brampton Faberge and Penepark Felicity, both of whom left an impressive mark on the herd. The final group of names is the “Alcohols,” which descend on the Dam’s line from the renowned Seawell Offshore.

In order to produce so many exceptional females sires have been crucial and have included over the years:- Oldstone Egbert (Nadia), Simpsons Greg (Daisy), Inverlochy Topsire (Clematis), Chunal Dougie (Iona), Newhouse Benson (Faith), Wesley Furnish (Jager) and Loganbar Goran (Malteeser).

The herd prides itself on a tight calving index. However due to problems with purchased bulls in 2016 this year’s calving has been delayed. In May Mortimers Hurricane was brought into the herd as a service sire and has been used alongside Goldies Lawson.

The herd is still very much in its prime. However, recent events have meant that it is no longer feasible to maintain the herd. Accordingly after much soul searching the painful decision was made to disperse the Balbithan Herd. It is very much hoped that breed enthusiasts will make the most of this opportunity to secure Balbithan bloodlines and take them forward in the breed where there is no doubt that their positive influence will continue for many years to come and we wish you every success with your purchases.

Herd Health The Balbithan herd of Charolais cattle has been managed by Jane Haw for over 20 years and through hard work and good breeding decisions has become one of the top Charolais herds in the country. We have provided veterinary care of the herd for the last 10 years and it has been an absolute pleasure and privilege to work with Jane and her hard working team who always strive to do the best for the cattle and as a result have created an elite herd with an extremely high heath status and very good fertility.

The herd is SAC accredited Johnes (highest level R1) free and has been on a testing regime for over 10 years. In addition, the herd is SAC accredited, BVD free and has been for over 6 years. The herd is also SAC accredited IBR vaccinated free. The herd is Lepto free, tests negative on annual checks and has no history of disease. The herd is vaccinated for BVD and IBR (marker). The herd is not under TB restrictions and the pedigree animals have never had a reactor identified.

The fertility of the cows is good and bulls are regularly checked for semen quality. Breeding for calving ease and good milk have been two of the traits alongside conformation, stature and growth rates that have helped make the herd so successful. Jane Haw’s drive and determination to breed only the best and her care and dedication to the care and welfare of the animals has helped create this outstanding herd of Charolais cattle.

Tom Clarke BVSc MRCVS Synergy Farm Health The farm policy is to carry out a c section as soon as it becomes evident that a calf is not presented correctly as it its felt this is the best option for both cow and calf.

Balbithan Herd Show & Sale Achievements Among the herd’s most notable achievements was Balbithan Nadia who was the Breed Champion and Supreme Interbreed Champion at the Royal Show in 2002 as well as being part of the Reserve Burke Trophy Pair. In October of the same year Balbithan Russia took the Heifer Championship at Perth and then repaid her new owners by also winning the Supreme Breed Championship at the Royal Show the following year as well as being part of the Reserve Champion Burke Trophy pair. In 2016 Iona took the Female Championship at the Three Counties Show prior to being part of the Burke Trophy Winning Pair.

To their credit Balbithan cattle have excelled at the National Charolais Show winning the Reserve Female Championship with Gipsophilia and Hersieys (who also took the Reserve Supreme) and most notably Iona who won the Supreme Championship in not only 2015 but again in 2017.

In the South West the Balbithan name has produced numerous female champions to include:Voile Breed & Reserve Interbreed Champion at Royal Cornwall in 2006 before selling to Andrew Hornall and winning the Reserve Female Championship at the Royal Highland in 2008 and breeding well in his herd.

Enya Breed Champion at all 3 Major South West Shows (Devon County, Royal Bath & West & Royal Cornwall) and the Reserve Champion Interbreed Continental at Devon County in 2011.

Hersieys Breed and Supreme Interbreed Champion at Devon County and Reserve Interbreed at the Royal Bath and West.

Faith Breed Champion at the Royal Bath & West and the Interbreed Cow Class at the Royal Cornwall.

The herd’s strength in depth has been demonstrated by the number of Breed and Interbreed Pairs and Group Championships that it has won over the years.

Male successes have included Breed Championships for, among others, Adzouki, Denver, Eria and Vesuvius. Balbithan Eria, Royal Bath and West and Royal Cornwall Show Male Champion and Devon County 2010 Continental Interbreed Champion, sold as a 3 year old into David & Bernadette’ Stacy’s Polgoda herd.

Eria’s offspring have featured regularly in local and National shows and sales, with a number of Breed and Reserve Breed Championships over the past 2 years. This year Maverick took Male and Breed Champion at Devon County Show with Polgoda Lexi the Reserve Female Champion. At the 2016 English Winter Fair, Polgoda Maverick was Overall Champion bull calf sired by a Charolais with Mackenzie Reserve. Mackenzie was in the top prices at Welshpool, & Polgoda Legend was the top price, show and sale Champion at the SWCA April 2017. Eria heifers also sell very well.

New Charolais breeder Clare Clapp also has reason to appreciate Balbithan genetics. Buying two Chunal Dougi daughters, Balbithan Hooch & Haiti in 2014, started Clare on a journey she had not anticipated when, encouraged and helped

by Jane, she began showing at local shows. Hooch and Haiti took 3 Breed Championships and 2 Reserve Championships in their first year and were regular Pairs Winners. Hooch’s first calf, Cove Lordlinhay, by Wesley Furnish, was “Best 2015 Bull Calf” in the SWCA 2015 Herd Competition.

Perth bull sales have also proved to be a happy hunting ground for the herd with Pharoah, Senator, Russia and Amazon all featuring in the leading prices while Vespasian won his class in 2006 and went for 26,000gns to the leading Balthayock and Blelack herds. The herd has long supported the SWCA spring and autumn sales, with both bulls and females regularly taking the top price spot.

The Balbithan name through Balbithan Italy, by Wesley Furnish has also featured on the big screen with this quiet heifer playing roles in the latest film production of “Beauty and the Beast” and the upcoming film “The Darkest Hour”.

Balbithan Reference to Sires (BCCS figures as at August 2017) Doonally Souverain: - TI +65 SRI +47 Souverain is a sire by French show bull, Norvegin. Souverain was the last bull purchased by North West Cattle Breeders in Ireland. Souverain's first crop of calves in 2003 included Farleycopse Urquhart, Intermediate Champion Perth Feb 2005 sold for 10,500gns. Souverain is very easy calving with very good Breedplan data. In Perth February 2009 the first prize winner Sackville Claudius,

by Souverain made 18,000gns. bought by the Newhouse and Balmyle herds.

Inverlochy Topsire: - TI +36 SRI +43 A thick, correct, easy fleshing bull, Topsire was a class winner in Perth in October 2003, selling for 10,000gns having been the Reserve Junior Male Champion at the Royal Highland Show. Topsire has been an influential sire at Balbithan. Sire of Balbithan Amazon, in the leading price list in Perth 2007, and of Balbithan Vespasian who sold for 26,000 in Perth 2006 to Major Walter(Balthayock) and Mr N Massie (Blelack).The winner of the English National calf show and a class winner in Perth, Vespasian was described by Neil Massie as - “accompanied by tremendous data, (August 2017 -TI +61 SRI+58); he has excellent conformation, and great style,” Vespasian’s sons Balthayock Diplomat made 22,000gns in Carlisle in 2009, and Balthayock Fortune 16,000gns in Stirling May 2017.

Chunal Dougie: - TI+37 SRI +44 Out of a Dingle Hofmeister daughter Dougie was the Senior Champion and Reserve Supreme Champion in Perth in February 2010 making 10,000gns. He has brought size and power and produced some very good females. Sire of Balbithan Iona the Supreme Champion at the Charolais National show in 2017.

Goldies Eddy: - TI +53 SRI +40 Eddy has clicked very well with the Balbithan cows. In the February 2015 Stirling sale, an AI son of Eddy made the top price of 18,000gns – Clyth Indestructible was bought into the Brampton herd and is on the Society’s Bull Royalty list. Eddy is a Dingle Hofmeister grandson. Caylers Limerick (see below Balthayock Hamish) was out of an Eddy daughter.

Wesley Furnish: - TI +40 SRI +43 A well-muscled, very easy calving bull, with a good temperament, who has been successfully used on heifers at Balbithan. His first son out of Balbithan Cherry, nd Balbithan Inklerberry was the Young bull of the year at the Beef South West, 2 at the National Show and Reserve Male champion at Devon County Show in 2014. In 2015, he was the Reserve Breed Champion at Devon County Show and won his class at the National Show. A son of Balthayock Aesop who was the herd sire at the Wesley herd. 20 Aesop bred sons from the Wesley herd averaged 4,200gns.

Alwent Goldbar: - TI +62 SRI +59 Sold to Cogent Breeding in February 2013. A son of Blelack Digger an easy calving sire who produced both bulls and females of scope and scale. “Genetics like this do not come along very often, and Goldbar not only has figures that rank him in the top one per cent of the Charolais breed, but he also has unbelievable physical appearance, is put together correctly in every way and has fantastic breed character. Goldbar's use in commercial, suckler and bull-breeding herds is therefore assured and I am absolutely delighted that we have been able to secure the Charolais breed’s most elite genetics for widespread use across the UK and internationally, where I believe he will provide the modern-day beef industry with just the product it needs.” (Cogent) Used widely throughout the UK and Northern Ireland with offspring regularly topping the market.

Balthayock Hamish: - TI +42 SRI +42.

We have found him to be an easy calving bull. Sire of the 10,000gns Caylers Lincoln and the 9,000gns Caylers Limerick sold at Carlisle in April 2017. His sire – Ugie Echo ranks in the top 1% for Fat Depth and in the top 5% for intramuscular fat (June 2017 figures). Described by Cogent beef specialist - “His breed character and outstanding conformation is unbelievable. His correctness, shape & sheer thickness is exceptional. I am confident this bull has a great future in both the pedigree and commercial sectors of the industry.”

Davally Illusion: - TI+43 SRI +44 “Illusion was a standout bull from a young calf. He comes from an exceptional cow family which has produced stock bulls in many herds across the UK. His father Balthayock Longbow is a consistent producer of easy fleshing well-muscled animals that are easily born and develop quickly. This bull offers a different pedigree to the leading bulls currently in AI (June 2017 information)) His breed character and outstanding conformation is unbelievable. His correctness, shape & sheer thickness is exceptional. I am confident this bull has a great future in both the pedigree and commercial sectors of the industry.” (Cogent). Mortimers Hurricane: - TI+41 SRI +36 (For full details see Lot 29) Loganbar Goran: - TI+39 SRI +36 Logan is the easiest calving bull Jane has ever used. He has tremendous temperament and is very correct in his feet and legs. A Dingle Hofmeister grandson and first class winner at Perth in February 2013. Hofmeister sired the Perth 2012 first prize winner Vexour Garth who went on to make a new world breed record of 100,000gns when he sold to an American company operating in the USA and South Africa. Balbithan Mustang, a Goran son, was the Reserve Champion at the SWCA Regional sale at Holsworthy in April 2017.

EXPLANATORY NOTES FOR CATALOGUES Only British Charolais BREEDPLAN EBVs can be validly compared between Charolais herds.

ESTIMATED BREEDING VALUES (EBVS) The EBV is the best estimate of an animal's genetic merit for that trait.

ACCURACY An accuracy value (Acc) is presented with every EBV and gives an indication of the amount of information that has been used in the calculation of that EBV. The higher the accuracy the lower the likelihood of change in the animal's EBV as more information is analysed for that animal or its relatives.

CALVING EASE Calving Ease EBVs are based on calving difficulty scores, birth weights and gestation length information. More positive EBVs are favourable and indicate easier calving.

DIR: Direct calving ease indicates how this animal influences the birth of its progeny. Using a bull in the Top 1% for CE direct (+16.3) is predicted to result in approximately 15% fewer assisted calvings in 2 year old heifers compared with using a bull in the Bottom 1% (-15.5). This range is predicted to be smaller in cows. Remember that the dam’s genetics and management are significant factors influencing calving ease in any mating.

DTRS: Daughter’s calving ease indicates how well the animal produces daughters that have easier calving.

BIRTH AND FERTILITY GL: Gestation Length EBV (days) is based on AI records. Lower (negative) GL EBVs indicate shorter gestation lengths which generally relate to easier calving and increased growth after birth.

BWT: Birth Weight EBV (kg) is based on the measured birth weight of animals, adjusted for dam age. The lower the value the lighter the calf at birth and the lower the likelihood of a difficult birth. This is particularly important when selecting sires for use over heifers.

SS: Scrotal Size EBV (cm) is an indicator of male fertility in regards to semen quality and quantity. Higher (positive) EBVs indicate higher fertility. There is also a small negative correlation with age of puberty in female progeny.

GROWTH MILK: 200-Day Milk EBV (kg) is an estimate of an animal's milking ability. For sires, this EBV is indicative of their daughter’s milking ability as it affects the 200day weight of their calves.

200: 200-Day Growth EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of animals taken between 80 and 300 days of age. Values are adjusted to 200 days and for dam age.

This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal's genetic merit for growth to early ages.

400: 400-Day Weight EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 301 and 500 days of age, adjusted to 400 days and for dam age. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal's genetic merit for yearling weight.

600: 600-Day Weight EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 501 and 900 days of age, adjusted to 600 days and for dam age. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal's genetic merit for growth beyond yearling age.

MWT: Mature Cow Weight EBV (kg) is an estimate of the genetic difference in cow weight at 5 years of age. Moderate or larger EBVs are generally more favourable.

CARCASE EMA: Eye Muscle Area EBV (cm2) estimates genetic differences in eye muscle area of a 300kg dressed carcase. More positive EBVs indicate better muscling on animals.

FAT: Rib Fat EBV (mm) estimates the genetic differences in fat depth at the rib in a 300kg dressed carcase. More positive EBVs indicate more subcutaneous fat and earlier maturity.

RBY%: Retail Beef Yield Percent EBV (%) represents total (boned out) meat yield as a percentage of a 300kg dressed carcase. A more positive EBV indicates higher percentage yield for the 300kg carcase size.

IMF%: Intra-muscular Fat Percent EBV (%) is an estimate of the genetic difference in the percentage of intra-muscular fat at the 12/13th rib site in a 300kg carcase. Depending on market targets, larger more positive values are generally more favourable.

Terminal Index The BCCS Terminal index is aimed at a commercial herd using Charolais bulls over large framed, mixed breed cows to breed steers and heifers to finish at 18 months of age. All progeny are destined for slaughter and no replacement females are selected from within the herd. There is some emphasis on calving ease while finishing steers at around 680 kg live weight (375 kg carcase weight) using a pasture based production system supplemented with extra rations during the finishing phase.

Use this index in a commercial herd to produce progeny for slaughter. The index has moderate emphasis on easier calving (ie getting a live calf with minimal human interference) while producing calves that will then grow quickly to market specifications at around 18 months of age. The index is focused on slaughter animals and does not account for maternal traits and is therefore not suited to breeding replacement females.

If you are using smaller framed cows or heifers in your herd, then you should also put extra emphasis on a higher calving ease direct EBV when selecting a sire using this index.

Self Replacing Index The BCCS Self Replacing index is aimed at a Charolais herd breeding steers to finish at 16 months of age. Replacement females are selected from within the herd. There is some emphasis on calving ease and maternal traits while finishing steers for slaughter at around 680 kg live weight (375 kg carcase weight) using a pasture based production system.

This Self Replacing index is also suitable to using Charolais sires over mixed breed cows where replacement females are sourced from within the herd. There may be some hybrid vigour expressed in the progeny depending on the breed type of the cows used. Therefore you should consider placing extra emphasis on the Calving Ease EBVs (more positive) of the sire to allow for possible heavier birth weights of his calves due to hybrid vigour.

Use this index in both commercial and pedigree herds where you are balancing the requirements of selecting replacement females while also producing animals for slaughter.

Charolais EBV ratios have been incorporated with the Estimated Breeding Values (EBV) to assist breeders in making their selection decisions when purchasing Charolais cattle. The Charolais EBV ratio for each trait shows that animal`s breeding value for that trait in relation to the current published breed average.

The average for each trait is 100, and the approximate range between the bottom 1% and the top 1% is between 70 and 130.
