Nina de Jonge Product Design Engineer & Illustrator
I am both a dreamer and pragmatic person, with a passion for anything visual. Both my technical and artistic skills are developed to a point where I can now work on varying projects - this keeps my mind sharp! Ever since I graduated as a product designer I have been learning about climate change and plastic pollution. It started out as (and still is) a passion project. If I am ever to work as product designer or engineer again, I would want it to be for a good environmental cause. Perhaps, when I have done even more research, I might be able to advise companies on how to reduce their carbon footprint and work with alternative materials instead of synthetic plastic. For now you can see the articles I have written about this topic on my blog page over at kakash.nl.

Working for Smarter Living has taught me a lot about mechanical design - on the hundredth of a millimeter. Wall sockets consist of many more parts than I would have ever expected. And they all have to comply with international safety standards. The development of these products is mostly a technical process, but I always approached it as somewhat of a puzzle. What makes these sockets special is that they require room for a PCBA to supply the USB ports with power. And more space means a higher voltage.

After a fruitful brainstorm session I have created a render of this concept for a MagSafe charging dock that also functions as an acoustic speaker through a hollow structure. The iPhone (vertically) or iPad (horizontally) that is getting charged automatically turns into alarm clock mode through NFC. Also charges Airpods and Apple watches.

CHARGING PRODUCTS Smarter Living BV
Designing this front cover was one of my first assignments at Smarter Living. It was also my first product to ever be manufactured and sold!
I started with sketching out a lot of ideas in which I tried to play with shapes and details. A few favorites were chosen, of which I then made renders in Fusion360. The final choice was the simple but elegant, lightly rounded version.
After 3D printing (for evaluating the fit and look) and fine-tuning the design, I created the manufacturing drawings for injection molding the cover.

FOLDING CAMPERS Alpenkreuzer BV
For my graduation internship I was free to design a complete new folding camper. It was to be considered a “premium model”, and with not much more information than that I was asked to define and research the target group, and come up with a
design. The “Aero Dome” was born! Photos are taken during a meeting for people who regularly camp in folding campers. This was great for my research - and they’re fascinating folk.

FOLDING CAMPERS Alpenkreuzer BV
For the year 2020 Alpenkreuzer asked me to collaborate with their team of developers to make a completely new portfolio from scratch. The folding campers were to range from “base” to “premium”, with the latter a further developed version of the concept I designed during my graduation internship: the Aero Dome. The models shown in the photos are the first prototypes and color tests.
Having found myself in rather a niche designing camping vehicles, why not continue? For this project I have made several concept visualizations for the graphics on the tiny camper: “OEHOE”. The camper in the photo is the first model. The other illustrations are made to explore alternative designs. Role: Graphic Designer Skills: concept sketching, photoshop

CAMPERS
OEHOE Outdoor Products This is a design for a slightly alternative looking successor of the tiny camper, and is therefore called OEHOE 2.0. This design is more of a mix between a regular camper and a folding camper, with more tent. The target group is more youthful, e.g. youngsters going to a festival with this trailer.
