IN SEARCH FOR SALVATION An inquiry in the experience of dying in Banaras.

Since the onset of human civilization man has been wondering about the great mysteries of our existence, the meaning of life, explaining death and theorizing about afterlife. Though seen as the enemy, Death is the natural order of things. In Hinduism the order of life is cyclic. It is believed that the body is a vessel, which will perish, whereas the soul is eternal and will take another form. This concept not only keeps the fear of death at bay but also aids in giving value to the deeds performed in one’s life. Hinduism believes in accepting death not as a finality but a mere step to the next life. It charts out the final phase of life, Vanprasthashram, as one when a person hands over household responsibilities to the next generation, takes an advisory role, and gradually withdraws from the world and finally accepts death. In Kashi, life is lived in perpetual presence of death. It is believed that anyone who dies there gets liberated from the cycles of life and death and attains salvation. This has made Kashi into a city that celebrates death like no other. This special status also generated a complex system of livelihood. The thesis tries to study the manner in which institutions and practices instrumentalise the process of dying and their spatial manifestations. It investigates the role of design in the process of dying and identifies opportunities to create spaces which allow life to play itself out and enhance the experience of living, waiting for death.


Hardwar Sacred geography of Banaras BanarasMathura is at a Ayodhya rare confluence of unique geography, mythology, urban form and cultural institutions. The city is located about 500 Dwarka miles south of New Delhi, India. Here, the Ujjain changes her usual direction from river Ganges south-east to flow back in a northerly direction pointing at her origins in the Himalayas, the sacred mountains for the Hindus. The river also takes a crescent profile, thus reconfirming the mythology according to which Lord Shiva, the presiding deity of the city, wears the moon on his head. The landscape on the west bank rises into three hillocks symbolizing the trident of Lord Shiva. The “other bank” of the river is, in Kanchi contrast, flat and plain.

AZO-TDC is a office building, storage space and customer front for the electricity supply company. The project was in the massing stage, the team had already finalized the specific area requirements and a basic order and hierarchy of spaces. It was designed as 2 main masses, first one was the customer front where we had a basic billing and inquiries section with a first floor data bank. the second building was a management building where the requirements was mostly of office space and conference rooms. We strived to achieve a better, more softer office space which allows for a little bit of organic space management and provides enough green spaces breaking the monotone of concrete and plaster. The main feature of the design was green aspect to it. We wanted to achieve an energy efficient and climatically viable working space. My part as an intern was to aid with ideas on massing, creating 3D models on Sketchup, climate testing using plug-ins, rendering views using Vray and making them presentable on Photoshop.

Jain upashray project started during the period of my internship. The project was to make an Upsharay in a small plot in Ahmedabad. Upashray in itself are challenging program as it uses no electricity to power itself hence we had to use all the traditional and natural sources of lighting and passive modes of ventilation. Over that it was a tight plot and was blocked on 3 sides with other plots. Being a religious structure, it had to go through the rules as prescribed by the Vastu Shastra and abide by them. we started with basic sketches on the plot area keeping in mind the guidelines as prescribed in the Vastu scriptures. Also we did study visits to old upashrays in the old heritage parts of Ahemedabad. It was interesting to notice smaller moves done by them to aide the Jain lifestyle in those Upasharay. We also did a research on wind towers across the globe and passive cooling systems. We used the wind and the water in the storage tanks together in a way to produce a draft and cooling effect to our advantage. Initially I was the only one working on this project along with the principle architects. My role was to test the ideas we discussed on real scale and research on various other aspects of passive energy. We sat on a couple of client meetings to get a taste of how to deal with a client. We also made a physical model of the design which in-turn helped the client to visualize better.

Panjrapol is a place where old cows are kept and fed. The project was given to the firm before we had joined but due to some reasons was on pause by the clients. The requirements were master planning of such a Panjrapol for 1000 cows with spaces for a manager, workers and fodder storage areas. The site was a green field site with a patch of barren land. The sheds were designed in 2 types, one which were single sided came for the boundaries and were accessible from the other side for the caretakers, which the ones in the middle were two-sided and had double the capacity. we also tried and get all the dimensions in a format where all the sheds can use 2 basic modules and each module has all the elements in the same length as they are manufactured. This made the construction easier to replicate on site and cost effective. We also did the basic terrain mapping so that the planning could use the natural water drainage on site. We protected almost 98% trees on site, while using basic foundations to not hamper the soil. We also used old thermocol as insulation under the metal roof. We also had a hose power cleaning system for bathing and cleaning the sheds. My role was in marterplanning and designing the sheds.

The living and learning design Center (LLDC) was conceived as a project during this time. It was meant to be a ‘place’ that would becomes a tactile and visual repository of the various crafts of Kutch. Its primary role as a resource center for artisan’s doubles up as a public museum and place for demonstrative, hands on learning. The overall master plan has three main components, the museum, the crafts school and the residential enclaves. Out of which though the mueseum part is built the rest still remains unbuilt. The archetype for a museum seeks to establish the primacy of place making over, mannerist form making prevalent in public architecture today. A museum, in this context is thus a “ place”, to experience, move through and habit in an informal way, making language and information more tactile than textual in nature. The vocabulary is purposefully simple and contemporary in nature, emblematic of the nature of craft as industry and vice- versa today. This was a exercise in building a 3d model of the entire project to visualize the space in its entirity.

Hall of nations was built to celebrate India’s 25th year of independence. It showcases construction and technological abilities of the new nation. Hall of nations lies at the edge of Lutyen’s Delhi, at the edge between state and the public. The desicion of demolition of Hall of nations was a conflicted phenomenon between various agencies and the people especially architects. At the verge of 75 years we need to take a hard look at the democracy and the ways it has manifested itself. There have been various protests, riots, movements, amendments, challenges, liberalization, autocratic acts by the government and an emergency. Hence it makes Hall of nations site a perfect ground to celebrate our democratic history and the conflicts over the years. The museum of post independent India becomes a permanent curated museum, it serves as a counterfoil to the proposed convention centre that has temporal exhibits happening around the year in this way the preserved buildings with your intervention become a way to use the site 365 days of the year hence becoming a part of the larger city infrastructure.

The idea of the studio was to study an larger urban context and have interventions in a way to address the issues which might be faced by the community and solve infrastructure needs of the area. Our site was the campus and the areas which inturn get affected by the campus of Graphic era university and its day to day activity. Graphic era university had been growing as a campus all over the Clement town area. The junction where the road from ISBT and the one connecting the two major campuses, is a busy crossroad. It offers commercial spaces, a school and residential spaces at the corner but has poor Pedestrian system. As and urban injunction we thought of smaller softer ideas which would inturn sit with the needs of the students, the residents, and the envisioned growth of the University. Addressing this issue of space management and pedestrian residents, the back alley looks into developing the back road into a Pedestrian street and offers programs which have a different modes of education and creates spaces for interaction.

PROJECT TYPE: Tourist center AREA: 3500 sq. m DURATION: 4 months YEAR: SEM 6, 2016-2017

Built almost a Millennium ago, Hampi now is a showcase of the ways of life of the people in the Vijaynagar Empire. It has royal palaces, stables, monolith platforms and tall standing Temple complexes. It talks about the affluent lifestyle, the means of employment, trade, cattle and other animal shelters and the spaces each required. Back then the relevance of each structure was also tied back to the socio-political system of the time. This system decided the place where a particular structure would be made and what would be the scale for such a structure. The towering temple spires which are seen as markers from across the city make a case for religious supremacy and how religion dictated the social and political ways of living in Hampi in the 11th and the 12th century. It places religious structure high on the merit list in terms of scale, access to water, space provided and built quality. The site is right beside the Virupaksha temple which a heavy monolith form marking the might of religion and God in the city. 12-21 is an attempt to view this space in a more 21st century way in terms of technology, use of space and more importantly way of life now.

Everyday!! We aspire a better lifestyle where we wont be stuck in traffic and will pursue our dreams and hobbies and yet will have free time to get into a new one.... And comes monday bringing us back to sqaure one. The aim of the project was to understand the fabric of Dharavi and build a urban tranformer, which not only aides the current lifestyle in Dharavi but also will help them when the area urbanizes and becomes another urban pocket in the city. Compound 13 is the part of Dharavi right beside the Mahim station and famous for its plastic recycling and fabric manufacturing units. This has sprung up a lot of small businesses and employs a lot of the people. Ctrl + f5 is that release which in different attempts tries to provide a space to learn something new. Under so much pressure from work and lack of amenities Ctrl + f5 tries to release this tension trying to develop a recreation and entertainment area which also functions as an informal market space for the residents to grow as entrepreneurs. A building that could orchestrate and animate the various domains of allowing them to collaborate and interact. Multiplicity of the structure could initiate interactions without them losing their own identity. It not only aims to be an entertainment center but an urban plaza in the heart of the city.

The exchange project was to study the methods, impacts and quality of spaces in a slum rehabilitation scheme as it happens in India and in China. The groups each studied a site which either was a slum or a rehabilitated society. We understood the basic social connections and aspirations and how the government there was successful or not successful to match their expectations. ShenxinCun district is an old housing community in Shanghai. Residents have several government subsidies for basic amenities. Over time the community grew and became an dense low rise urban pocket in a continuously gentrifying neighborhood. Being a dense community they don’t have any public gathering or common leisure space except the market across the street. The social fabric is strong with a lot of various classes of people residing in the community. Depending on the financial condition of the family, the space is arranged such that while entering from the street the kitchen is followed by a living room or bedroom. Several houses have illegal extensions to their houses for private toilets and external staircases. The community has a few of betting parlors, game centers and rest gathering spaces are just street corners. As their are no religious spaces of congregation, our plan was to plug certain urban devices to increase interaction and provide some public places for the community.

Early In 2016, The Nation Was In A Debate About How Much Freedom Does Free Speech Give You? We were made to realise that the government can always crack down on your fundamental rigths. We also saw a befitting protest by the student community along with activists. This made me think how like this the social norms and hundreds of years of Patriarchal and caste based system has supressed voices and points of views under the grab of rules which were based in the fear of losing power. The site commemorates dalit history and the continuing struggle for empowerment. Dalit history has had many individuals who were vocal about the injustice done to them. Though made as a political statement from a particular party, the site can be envisioned as a site which can inturn work its way up from the bottom giving power and platform to the underepresented. Memorial for red whispers acts as the mechanism to give the undermined group a platform to raise their concerns. Issues that the mainstream media does not necessarily cover. The memorial opens to a series of steps which establishes a plaza used for debates and discussions. It is a media center exclusively for the voices of dissent, power the the weeak and opressed and a space for political and theological discussions in the heart of the capital of the largest and the most politicized state in India.
