THE MOST COMMON QUESTIONS YOU MAY RECEIVE FROM CUSTOMERS:
WHY CAN’T I USE HOUSEHOLD DETERGENTS TO CLEAN MY JACKET?
Waterproof jackets and footwear come with a DWR (Durable Water Repellent) finish to the outer fabric. This prevents the fabric from absorbing water by making it bead up and roll off the fabric surface. Conventional laundry detergents leave behind a water attractive (hydrophilic) residue which masks the Durable Water Repellency (DWR), causing fabrics to absorb water and “wet out” in damp or wet conditions. Nikwax technical washes clean waterproof gear while reviving DWR and breathability.
MY JACKET IS ALREADY WATERPROOF, WHY DO I NEED TO RE-WATERPROOF?
The jacket’s DWR will degrade with dirt and use, causing the fabric to soak up water, reducing breathability. Maintaining the DWR on the outer fabric with a waterproofer, such as Nikwax TX.Direct, is vital to the performance of the garment.
HOW OFTEN DO I NEED TO CLEAN AND WATERPROOF A GARMENT?
As soon as a garment is visibly wetting out it should be cleaned with one of the Nikwax cleaners. This will revive any existing DWR. If this alone doesn’t stop the garment wetting out it’s time to re-waterproof with an appropriate product.
CAN I MACHINE WASH MY GARMENT?
Most waterproof jackets are machine washable; however, customers should be advised to read the care label for their specific item. Nikwax aftercare can be used both in the washing machine and by hand (see bottle for instructions).
IS HEAT REQUIRED TO ACTIVATE THE WATERPROOFING PRODUCT?
Unlike the majority of other aftercare brands, Nikwax does not require heat activation. Items simply need to be left to air-dry, although can also be tumble dried if preferred and the care label allows.
WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF USING THE WASH-IN TX.DIRECT OVER THE SPRAYON?
The wash-in formula ensures an even coverage of product over the whole garment, including small details such as zips, inside pockets and linings. These areas are easily missed with a spray-on treatment. However, garments with a wicking lining need to be treated with TX.Direct spray-on
Remember – combining outdoor gear with Nikwax aftercare is not “up-selling” – it’s simply good customer service that ensures their new product will last!
Waterproof clothing will keep you warm and dry – keeping rain out while allowing moisture vapor to escape.
Over time, as the finish is either worn away by abrasion or masked by contaminants like dirt and body oils, a garment will lose its water repellency – leaving the wearer wet, cold, and uncomfortable.

So how do you sell it to your customers?
Firstly, make sure you listen and understand their needs. They may say...
“I need a waterproof jacket to wear on day hikes in all seasons.”
You could respond with:
“Ok, you’re going to need a jacket that’s both breathable and waterproof, as well as the right aftercare. I’ll explain what the aftercare is later. First, let’s find you a suitable jacket.”
While the customer is choosing the item, you’ll be able to explain why they need a jacket that’s both waterproof and breathable.
Once the customer has chosen a jacket, hand them a bottle of Nikwax and say: “This is the aftercare that keeps your jacket clean, breathable, and waterproof. It ensures water beads up on the outside and keeps you dry and comfortable on the inside.”
No pushy sales techniques needed...
Ideally you should aim to mention Nikwax before you bring the customer to the checkout. But if you forget it’s fine to bring it up at the till or after the sale.
