01 The Hall Archery Training Hall - Olympic 2040 Authors: Niklas Michalleck and Christine Fromm Type: Group Project - Bachelor Thesis Contribution: Concept development, structural design, drawings and visualisation Location: Forest Institution: TU Dortmund Academic Year: Summer Semester 2025 Studio: Studio E2A - Prof. Piet Eckert & Wim Eckert
Design Context The project was developed in the context of a potential German bid for the Olympic Games 2040 and proposes a sustainable training centre for a freely selectable sport discipline. The archery hall is designed to accommodate both professional and recreational use, providing space for training and competition, including up to 200 spectators. The aim is to develop an architectural concept that integrates sport-specific requirements with a clear spatial identity and a material-driven structural approach. 1
Section 1 : 50
Structural Concept The archery hall is based on a serial arrangement of octagonal reinforced concrete columns, from which inclined timber beams emerge in pairs. At the ridge, they form a precise pitched roof geometry that acts as the primary load-bearing system. The repetition of these elements creates a rhythmic field of columns and establishes a clear structural order, subdividing the building into five linear hall units.
Schnitt 1:50
The constructive logic of the system combines technical precision with a light, almost filigree tectonic expression. Concrete and timber assume different roles within the structural system, generating a distinctive spatial character. The linear sequence of columns translates the principles of archery, direction, concentration, and repetition, into a spatial structure that organises and defines the interior.

Urban Integration The positioning of the hall mediates between the surrounding landscape and the adjacent urban context. Its elongated form follows the logic of the shooting lanes and opens towards the landscape. The spatial distance creates a calm environment for training, while proximity to the city ensures accessibility. The site plan is conceived as an abstract placement, emphasising the building’s integration within the landscape. The landscape setting plays a decisive role in shaping the atmosphere of the project. The shooting lanes, extending up to 90 metres, generate a clear and linear spatial configuration that naturally integrates into the openness of the site. The hall adopts this spatial rhythm: the landscape acts as a quiet buffer for the training environment, while the proximity to the urban context maintains accessibility. The result is a place that harmoniously combines concentration, orientation, and openness within the landscape. Strukturmodell

STRUCTURAL EVOLUTION The structural system was developed through an iterative design process, evolving from a simple frame into a differentiated load-bearing concept. Initial studies explored a conventional frame, gradually transformed into a timber system with branching elements. This process led to the introduction of a hexagonal column, enabling a clearer structural logic and force distribution. In the final stage, the system was resolved as a hybrid construction, with a concrete column head supporting timber elements, forming the tree-like structure.

The central building spine organises the functional sequence and connects the individual shooting lanes. The spatial layout enables simultaneous training, accommodating up to 24 athletes indoors and an additional 20 on the outdoor ranges. The linear organisation separates circulation paths and reinforces a focused training environment.

The facade follows the structural rhythm of the load-bearing system. Between the concrete columns, a timber post-and-beam construction is spanned, with external pressure plates made of aluminium. It incorporates large glazed surfaces that bring natural light deep into the interior while opening views towards the landscape. A fine, green-tinted metal mesh is placed as a secondary layer in front, acting as a filter between interior and exterior. It adds depth to the facade, reduces direct solar exposure, and creates a subtle interplay of transparency and reflection.

02 Enclosing Urban Design Project
Authors: N. Michalleck, L. Luong, C. Fromm, L. Thieken, G. Goebel, Type: Group project Contribution: Urban framework developed in a team, individual architectural design of the shown building Location: Dortmund Nordstadt Institution: TU Dortmund Academic Year: Summer Semester 2024 Studio: Urban Design Studio (Jessen / Vollenweider)
Design Context: The urban design project “Dortmund – Transformation of an Urban Area” explored the further development of the site surrounding the Dietrich-Keuning-Haus. The aim was to create new spaces for housing, culture, and social interaction through targeted densification, while redefining the transition between the park and the Nordstadt district. The proposal positions itself as a contribution to a socially mixed, open, and long-term resilient urban structure. 7

Placement and Structure The enclosing figure follows the existing urban fabric, adopting its heights, edges, and characteristic setbacks. These elements are reinterpreted and condensed into a calm and coherent architectural language. The aim is to define the open block while simultaneously establishing spatial and social connections. Openings, passages, and permeable edges weave the fragments into a continuous structure that does not replace the existing, but extends it.

Beyond connecting built volumes, the project also focuses on linking the people who inhabit them. The design is conceived as a spatial and social network, enabling interaction while allowing for moments of retreat. At ground level, active uses such as gastronomy, workshops, and flexible spaces create lively zones of exchange, accessible from both inside and outside. These activate the public realm, open the block towards the neighbourhood, and establish new interfaces between public and private life. Linocut

Spatial Structure Section 1 : 100
The project conceives the block as a spatial and social network. At ground level, publicly accessible uses such as gastronomy, workshops, and communal spaces activate the street and open the block towards the neighbourhood. On the upper floors, articulated façades and access galleries mediate between public and private space, creating a sequence of individual retreat zones. The combination of compact apartments and vertically organised maisonettes creates a diverse spatial structure. The dwellings are oriented towards both the courtyard and the street, while the stepped façade brings daylight deep into the block, giving the dense structure a sense of openness. A secondary circulation system of galleries and staircases connects the units and creates additional spaces for interaction. The clear structural system and the precisely articulated facade define a robust yet restrained architectural expression. The result is a block that balances openness and protection, community and privacy, a contemporary form of dense urban living. Elevation 1 : 100

03 Urban Infill Project 1- Infill development
Author: Niklas Michalleck Type: Individual project Location: Dortmund Nordstadt Institution: TU Dortmund Academic Year: Winter Semester 2023 Studio: Chair of Structural Design (Prof. Hangebruch)
Design Context The project explores the design of a mixed-use urban building in Dortmund Nordstadt. The selected plot is located next to a park and requires a publicly accessible passage at ground level. The aim was to develop a resource-efficient and structurally coherent building that integrates into its urban context. The proposal understands urban infill as an opportunity to strengthen existing qualities and contribute to the spatial definition of the city. Through a clear architectural expression, the project establishes a dialogue between built form and surrounding open space. 11
Site and Integration Plot 3 is located in the heart of Dortmund Nordstadt, one of the city’s most dense and vibrant districts. Students, artists, and families coexist here within a fine-grained urban fabric of historic buildings, narrow streets, and small open spaces. The project understands densification not as an addiKONZEPTENTWICKLUNG tion, but as a continuation, an architectural response rooted in its context. Figure-Ground Plan 1 : 1000
The new building aligns with the surrounding structures in terms of height and eaves, integrating naturally into the streetscape. Its articulation reflects the parcel structure of the neighbourhood, creating a composition that respects the scale of Nordstadt. Between the two volumes, a vertical garden emerges as a shared space, strengthening social interaction and extending nature deep into the building.

Along the vertical garden, the central circulation unfolds, rising in a spiral sequence from floor to floor. This path becomes a space of interaction—people meet, pause, and engage in conversation. The open ateliers line this route and can be used flexibly for work, exhibitions, or shared activities. A social core emerges, intertwining living, working, and culture while making everyday life visible.

The building follows a hybrid structural logic: a solid natural stone base forms a robust and durable foundation for the public uses, anchoring the building within the urban context. Above, a precisely articulated timber structure develops, whose rhythmic columns and slabs remain exposed and define the interior atmosphere. The vertical garden connects both volumes and establishes a shared spatial centre—resulting in a building that not only densifies, but actively relates people, spaces, and construction.

Design Context “Outwardly, the church should develop a form that asserts itself through clarity, height, and presence within a secular environment. Its scale relates to the surrounding residential buildings.” — Rudolf Schwarz This attitude also shapes the design of Library North. The independent building volume asserts itself within the urban context while mediating between the adjacent residential buildings. 15
