Hello Everyone!

This spring and summer there was a lot of work done to get the roads and parks in the best shape possible with the equipment and materials available.

The outdoor pool and the snack bar are now open. Come up and enjoy what the clubhouse has to offer. A lot of members don’t realize there are two lakes in Section 1 off Hidden Lake Road. There is a beautiful picnic area right on the lake; the lakes are for all the members to use. So have a barbecue or a picnic, go kayaking or fishing, use the playground or just enjoy the day at the lake.

Lastly, I would like to give a board update. At the March regular meeting Director Robert Fenlon made a motion to remove me as director and a separate motion to remove me as president of Winona lakes. The board decided to hear his claims at a special meeting for that purpose. At the Special meeting the board heard all of his fifteen charges. I chose to hold this meeting in open session for all members to hear the proceedings.

Our attorney attended the meeting and explained to the entire board there were no bylaws nor were any state or corporate laws broken. All directors have a duty to the Winona Lakes Corporation and cannot make this a personal decision.

The board heard his claims and the legal opinion then realizing there was no basis to his claims, the board rejected his attempt to take over the board. I’m pleased that the board supported me and voted to keep me as President with a 6-0-3 vote. The three directors in favor of my removal are members of the Winona Lakes Homeowners for Reform Incorporated. For further information, refer to the Special Meeting Minutes dated 4/6/2013 printed in this Winonagram. It’s a shame that some members of the board can’t get along with each other no matter how hard we try to reach out.

The next election is coming soon for three new directors. If you are interested in running you can go to the office and pick up an application. Remember the best candidates are people that can think for themselves and are for best interest of the community and not their own personal gain.

ADMINISTRATION Message From The Community Manager our service providers have been replaced already.

I will continue to monitor our expenses and how vendors treat us.

(All meetings are held on the 3rd Saturday of every month and begin at 10:00 a.m. with the exception of the Annual Election Meeting which begins at 12:00 p.m.)

Maintenance plans for our equipment are also being put into effect, with better record keeping of repairs made. This will help us plan for future expenses.

By Gene Tick In my past messages I have talked about planning and moving forward. A lot of things have been taking place since I have become your Community Manager. First let me express what I mean by “your” Community Manager. I am working for you. I treat everything that I do for Winona Lakes as if I live here too. I am working in every which way to help improve the operations of the community and save money. I am looking at the past and present in order to improve the future of the community.

Much of my work has been changing day to day operations so that we can get better control on expenses and time spent on all aspects of work within the community. Unfortunately, a lot of work has been reactive instead of being proactive. Planning and being proactive is a better way for us to move forward. This will come in time. Much of being reactive is due to the fact that there is a lot of catching up to do with our clubhouse repairs and replacement of aging and non-functioning equipment.

WINONA LAKES 2013 BOARD MEETINGS

With all the talk about work on equipment, I have not forgotten about the roads. I could go on for hours about our roads. We do have many issues with our roads and drainage. I am working with our maintenance department to better identify how to be more effective on our road maintenance.

Budgets will limit what we can do, and we have only four full time maintenance workers to cover approximately 26 miles of roads. That is a lot of maintenance of roads while they have to do many other projects as well. I am also working with our Roads & Maintenance Committee and would like to thank them for their input and how they have been receptive to working with “the new guy”. I

look forward to making our meetings more and more productive.

In addition, I am working with the Finance Committee to review our expenses and plan for future needs and to help reduce surprise expenses.

Planning and education will make us a stronger community.

The truth of the matter is that there has been a lot of costly equipment repairs and replacement.

Aging equipment and lack of maintenance to the equipment has played big part in the issues of our equipment. In addition, our maintenance department’s aging equipment and trucks are also in need of immediate attention. We need to invest in ourselves by being able to maintain and preserve what we do have.

Nothing lasts forever and eventually our equipment will need to be replaced and this costs us money. Putting in place regular maintenance programs with our equipment in the long run will help us avoid large scale expenses all at once.

Waiting for things to stop working is not a plan.

The plan is to monitor the effectiveness and age of our equipment and make educated decisions on repair or replacement as needed.

Playing catch up puts us behind. I had to take care of quite a few immediate issues before I could begin to move Winona Lakes forward.

Working with new vendors and suppliers is the beginning of saving money. I have reviewed some of our vendors and have found we can do better for our dollar without sacrificing quality. Some of WINONAGRAM | SUMMER 2013

Special Meeting Minutes | To hold a hearing in closed executive session on a pending motion to remove the President from office under WLPOA Bylaw Section 8.2. This motion is to remove the President from office ONLY, and NOT as a director on the board. The Board will then vote in open session on the pending motion, and thereafter may take such other action or actions as the Board may then be appropriate, if any, as a result of the vote.

AMENITIES What Are The Amenities In Winona Lakes?

Winona Lakes has many amenities for members to enjoy. The Clubhouse is open seven days a week, arcade games are available plus Wi-Fi for your use.

The heated indoor pool is also open 7 days a week. The outdoor pool is open during the summer months (weather permitting) as well as our Snack Bar. Hours of operation of both pools are posted on our website or contact the Administration office.

We have two tennis courts within Winona Lakes. One is located on Clubhouse Drive before the “S” turn and the other is in Section 18 near the Stoney Hollow Bridge.

We also have a baseball field near the bridge in Section 18.

There are two lakes (Big Winona & Little Winona) in Section 1 for fishing or kayaking. While you’re there, enjoy Red Bird Park and playground. There is also a playground located at the Clubhouse as well as a basketball court, horseshoe pits, and shuffleboard court. There is a third playground just before the “S” turn located near the tennis court.

As you can see there are a lot of things to do in your community. In addition, the Recreation Committee plans events throughout the year. Come out and enjoy all your community has to offer!

Community News Deer Issues The deer issues here in Winona Lakes cannot simply be pushed aside with hopes that nature will take care of itself. We are all a part of nature and need to understand that we need to do our part before it’s too late.

With the possibility of disastrous results, such as an environmental crash of the introduction of Chronic Wasting Disease, something needs to be done. If CWD is discovered within Winona Lakes or any neighboring areas, the community will have no say in protecting its wildlife. The government will be forced to enter these areas and completely exterminate the entire deer herd to prevent the disease from spreading.

Whitetail deer will be extinct from Winona Lakes. Understanding Chronic Wasting Disease may help you understand that deer need to be managed. Chronic Wasting Deer (CWD) is a transmissible neurological disease of deer and elk that produces small lesions in brains of infected animals. It is characterized by loss of body condition behavioral abnormalities and death.

CWD is classified as a transmissible spongiform encephalopathy, and is similar to mad cow disease in cattle and in sheep. CWD can reduce the growth and size of wild deer population in areas where the prevalence is high and is of increasing concern for wildlife managers across North America.

CWD has recently been discovered in Pennsylvania and in March 2013 the Pennsylvania Game Commission announced that three free ranging hunters killed deer that had tested positive for CWD from the 2012-13 hunting season.

TECHNOLOGY Say Goodbye to Record Stores and Hello to Streaming Music

Record Stores has recently come and passed—a day designed to remind us to get out into local record stores and buy music. Every year I’m reminded of the records I bought, starting back in the early 70s.

Those days are long gone, largely thanks to digital music, and especially thanks to the emergence and convenience of streaming music.

There are streaming music services of all types, each with their advantages and limitations. At their best, these sites give us access to huge libraries of music, and allow us to listen online, on our smart phones, on our tablets and even in our cars.

More convenience and portability of music than ever before, and it’s only just begun. The world of streaming music is still relatively new, but there are a myriad of choices out there.

can set up an online station based on a band, a song, or a genre. The Pandora algorithm, aka the Music Genome Project, is surprisingly dialed in, and you’ll get mostly solid results based on the criteria you set up. You can listen to Pandora online or for free on smart phones and devices.

Spotify is one of the current biggest players, starting in Europe and going international a couple of years back. Spotify has an ad-based online only free version, and a pay version usable on mobile devices.

Spotify is different than Pandora in that Spotify allows you to listen to exactly what you want from its 16 million track library. You won’t find every band and album on there, but honestly, you’ll find most of what you’re looking for with no problems.

Online streaming is the fastest growing form of music listening, according to CNN, and other industry experts. The Recording Industry Association of America has said that overall music sales continued to decline in 2012, but digital-music sales were up 14%, topping $4 billion.

The newest player in the streaming music scene is, believe it or not…Twitter. Twitter Music recently launched as a site that tracks music trending on Twitter. Twitter bought out a site called We Are Hunted which searched the Web looking for new music and posted it in a stream. Twitter Music is still in its infancy, but it’s an interesting entry into the race.

Pandora has been around for years and is one of the granddads of streaming music. With Pandora, you

at Apple with the likes of Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine, and a secret “Project Daisy” have been floating around.

Google Music currently offers cloud storage of personal music collections. Google is supposedly working with YouTube to expand its music capabilities, even though it’s already a huge music resource.

Microsoft has already entered the fray with Xbox Music. This service features ad-supported and ad free options, offers songs and albums, and works with Windows 8 and Windows RT tablets and PCS. So, there are choices out there. Most of these services have a lot of crossover. Your choice depends on your platform and what you’re looking to do—stream music, choose songs and albums, or get similar recommendations. It’s all out there streaming for you.

Four (4) guest passes are allotted to each voting member per lot owned, free of charge.

Replacement guest passes are $3 each.

Tenant Photo ID Cards Property owners are required to register tenants as per the Tenant Rental Policy adopted by the Board of Directors on May 18, 2012.

Ingredients • 8oz. size Philadelphia (or any brand) cream cheese • 6oz. can of baby shrimp • 1 small onion diced • 1 stalk celery diced • Salt to taste (optional) Directions Drain the juice from the shrimp, put in a bowl. Mash up with a fork. Add the cream cheese and mix together. Add the onion and celery (and salt) and chill for an hour or until cold. Use your favorite snack crackers to eat the dip with.

Ingredients: • Any 1 lb. box of pasta (bowties, rotelle, ziti, etc.)

• Any vegetables you like chopped up (I use broccoli, cucumbers and tomatoes) • 1 bottle of Wish Bone Italian dressing Directions: Cook pasta using directions on box. Drain when done. Cut up vegetables of your choice and when noodles are cool, add and mix together. Add a cup of Italian dressing and mix. Cover and put in refrigerator until cold. Mix again when ready to use and if needed, add more salad dressing. Serve.

7 Layer Dip Ingredients: • 1 sm. can of refried beans • 1 sm. container sour cream • 1 pkg. Hidden Valley Ranch Ranch dip mix • 1/2 head of lettuce • 2 tomatoes • 1 sm. bag shredded sharp cheddar cheese • Green onions Directions: Layer the refried beans in a 9 x 13 pan Mix the sour cream and ranch mix together in separate bowl then spread it over the refried beans Cut up the lettuce or shred into pieces and add over the sour cream mixture.

Dice up the tomatoes and add on top of the lettuce.

Add one cup shredded cheese over the tomatoes (or more depending on how much cheese you like) Dice the green onions and add to top of cheese.

Cover and refrigerate until cold and ready to serve. Serve with Tostitos “scoops” tortilla chips or it tastes even better with Lime flavored tortilla chips. Enjoy!
