HOORAY FOR THE BEACH Sunshine, a beach umbrella, white sand, infrequent clouds, the sound of lapping water, boats in the distance, kids splashing and jumping off the swim dock, all are part of what we enjoy at the Tanglwood Beach and Marina.

Spread your blanket on the sand or put your cooler and tablecloth on one of the new tables at the Gazebo and you are prepared for a fun day.

This Spring our Gazebo received a major update with the addition of newly constructed picnic tables and benches, a paint job for the floor and railings, and specially fitted iron grates for the grill area. The large grill can accommodate a large array of food items from a rack of ribs, grilled vegetables, shish-kabobs to corn on the cob.

Our lifeguard is on duty from 10 am until 6 pm on good weather days. The bathhouse includes an outdoor shower which is very convenient for cleanup before getting back in your car or golf cart. Remember to observe all safety rules and respect your neighbors.

Things here at Tanglwood have changed/adapted to comply with the directives from the Governor of Pennsylvania. We are doing our best and it is not easy.

The playground, beach and boating are now open. Please comply with the rules regarding masks, social distancing and parking. There are going to be times when the beach will reach capacity (50%) and you may be turned away.

I want to take this opportunity to thank our maintenance staff, security staff and office staff for continuing to work during these times. Congrats to Darrell Merkel on his promotion to heading up the Maintenance staff.

We do have one problem… our recycle bins are overflowing. To help correct this problem, the bins will be emptied on Mondays and Thursdays. PLEASE break down cardboard boxes and flatten them out before putting them in the bins.

Budget time is here for 2021. Our budget & finance committee is in the process of looking at and estimating our expenses for next year. Ron Triani, our treasurer, will once again get more gray hair.

Fall is fast approaching; time to look at your heating systems and prepare them for the winter months.

Reminder!!! If you have not yet submitted your vote to change our covenants to keep Tanglwood a community in perpetuity, PLEASE DO IT NOW. If you have misplaced your ballot, contact the office and we will issue you a replacement.

I want to acknowledge the entire staff and the membership for all their efforts in working through the CV -19 Virus nightmare. We were able to continue to serve the members under difficult circumstances.

I made an adjustment with respect to maintenance due to the departure of the maintenance supervisor. Pike County went into the yellow designation on May 29, 2020 and into the green designation on June 19, 2020.

The docks on Lake Wallenpaupack were installed by the May 15th contracted deadline. We experienced issues with the anchoring chains that were addressed by the contractor, T.J. Edwards. We purchased and installed new nowake buoys.

The TLCA Staff installed the docks on Lake Tanglwood.

I purchased signs stating that amenities were closed due to the virus. In addition, I purchased signs reminding our members to maintain social distancing. The signs were placed at the TLCA amenities and at the front entrance.

The insurance carrier had recommended placing signs at amenities and at the main entrance.

I am pleased to announce that Darrell Merkel, a 15-year maintenance employee, has accepted the position of Lead Man for the maintenance department. Darrell has been a dedicated employee and as a result has been recognized with this promotion.

The Board has decided to move in a different direction regarding the hosting of the community website. The Niki Jones Agency will continue with the production of the Tanglwood Lakes Newspaper.

We look forward to serving the community through the website and email blasts.

I am working with the current waste hauler to extend the existing contract for one year.

There have been changes in the

industry and I feel that it makes sense to continue with a contractor that we have good experience with at no price increase.

The permit process for removing sediment from Lake Tanglwood is moving forward.

The first phase of removal is to dredge 15,000 cubic yards of unconsolidated sediment within the eastern area of Lake Tanglwood and dewater dredged soil in the uplands to the east of the lake. We have secured additional property that may be used to store the geotubes that hold the sediment.

The sediment that will be removed has been evaluated and is not contaminated.

The guide rails for the road over the Tanglwood Pipe were delivered and installed on June 26, 2020.

The new barbecue grates are now in place at the beach property on Lake Wallenpaupack. The floor and railing of the facility have been painted and new tables were added.

There was one new home construction permit issued for a Yacht Club Drive property adjacent to the TLCA Shale Pit.

The construction of the Fore Bay at the Indian Drive Boat Storage facility is ready to move forward. The permits are in place and the work will be accomplished in-house by our maintenance staff.

Mark Soden, a contractor, is reviewing the plans for replacing the piers at the bathhouse. Mark was the only contractor interested in this project. The plans that Kiley Engineering sent out to area contractors did not result in bids. The pier replacement may have to be revisited should Mark choose not to offer a bid.

In any event, any construction will have to be following the summer season at this point.

Removable tarps used to cover stored vehicles shall be brown or dark green in color.

Where possible storage of large recreational vehicles [campers, motor homes] on a member’s property shall be placed at the side or rear of the property. Permits for short term recreational vehicle parking not to exceed 14 days may be granted by the Community Manager. Use of the recreational vehicle for overnight lodging is prohibited [Fine $100.00].

Please be advised - this regulation will be strictly enforced starting on October 15, 2020 as boats are removed from the docks for winter storage.

We seek voluntary compliance on the part of the membership to avoid a fine being assessed.

IT’S ELECTION TIME Tanglwood Lakes is similar to many organizations from your local town council on up to the U.S. Government in that the affairs, purposes, and powers are administered and governed by those individuals duly elected. For TLCA it is a Board of Directors as designated through the Articles of Incorporation which describes the Membership, Voting Rights, Powers of the Board of Directors, and the process for Elections.

Keep your eyes open for official mailing from Tanglwood in September and make sure to return your ballot promptly.

During the month of July, the Nominating Committee receives nominations, receives their biographies, and conduct interviews. This slate is then presented to the Board of Directors for approval. The membership is notified of the official Ballot list of nominees at least 50 days prior to the election date. At this point a Member can enter a petition at least 40 days prior to the meeting day.

In September the ballot along with the nominee’s biographies are mailed to the Membership and must be received at least 15 days prior to the general election in October. All ballots are written and can be returned through the U.S. postal service, delivered in person to the Chalet Office, or brought to the meeting. The biographies might also be posted on our website and included in the newspaper.

Meet Our Graduates!

We are proud of all the students who graduated from High School and College this year. Read about our neighbors who recently graduated and the stories from their families: Alexis Begliomini graduated from Marywood University in May of 2020. She recently passed her boards and is now a physician’s assistant! Congratulations Alley!!

Jessica Begliomini graduated from Northampton Area High School.

She played varsity volleyball, managed the middle school’s boys volleyball team, and was in biology and volunteer clubs. She loves Broadway and studied acting for many years and was in several local plays. She will be going to Temple University to study marketing.

Emma Flinchbaugh graduated from Palisades High School in Kintnersville PA. Emma was the recipient of the Palisades Community Foundation Scholarship Award and the Palisades Education Association Achievement Scholarship. Emma is a National Merit Scholarship Commended Student and an AP Scholar with honors. She will be attending Leigh University and pursuing degrees in both psychology and marketing. Emma Flinchbaugh is the granddaughter of Ronald and Ellen Triani.

Our daughter, Patricia Lynn Juliano, graduated from Penn State University on May 8, 2020 with a Bachelor of Design degree from the College of Arts and Architecture. Patricia will be pursuing a career in graphic design. Patricia graduated with high honors for her academic achievements within the graphic design program.

My name is Bozena Krol. We are long time Tanglwood residents.

We are proud to say that our son, Sebastian Krol, got his Masters of Business Administration degree from Brandman University in Irvine, California.

My name is Lisa Mickley. In May, I graduated with a degree of Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Penn State University! This degree comes with tears and cheers, as it was my husband’s diagnosis of cancer which lead me down this journey for a 2nd career as a nurse. Previously, I had a 25 year career in mortgage financing. I have helped many clients and have held many hands through trying times! I now work as a registered nurse at Geisinger Community Medical Center in Scranton, in the cardiac special care unit (CSCU.) It’s an honor and a privilege to be able to help and care for my patients in this new role. My husband passed away 3 years ago and this degree is dedicated to him!

Our daughter, Alyssa Rose Miller, is a 2020 graduate of Wallenpaupack Area High School. She is the daughter of David and Allison Miller, and first granddaughter of Ed and Loretta Schofield.

Alyssa played flute as a member of the marching band and graduated in the top 15% of her class. She is enrolled at Penn State for this fall, majoring in biochemistry and molecular biology, with plans to attend medical school.

From George and Elena Spanos: Our youngest graduated in June from college. Katherine Elena Spanos graduated from Dartmouth College with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology with a minor in psychology. She plans to work as a research intern in public health sciences at the Penn State College of Medicine during a gap year before attending medical school.

ALL ABOUT GOLF CARTS In Tanglwood Lakes Community many of our residents and families are eager to take advantage of the privilege to own a golf cart. Useful not only for carrying golf clubs but as a fun mode of transportation with room for backseat passengers, beach chairs, and other recreational paraphernalia or picnic equipment. For all our safety it is important to be aware of TLCA’s regulations about golf carts and other recreational vehicles - Regulation #211 TLCA has authorized the use of Golf Carts (maximum governed speed between 20 and 25 miles per hour).

News from Paupack Hills Golf & Country Club Since its beginning as a real estate venture Tanglwood Lakes has had a golf course as part of its master plan. Through the years Paupack Hills grew from a nine-hole course to eighteen then moving to a separately owned entity with TLCA residents always having the right to reserve a tee time and enjoy the restaurant.

Two years ago Polise Holdings became the new owner and this year moved to a semiprivate status which included full and partial membership rates, resident rates, and general public rates. This new status has drawn many TLCA and area residents, and vacationers back to PPH which uses the tag, “The Golf Course of Lake Wallenpaupack”.

Complementing the transition is an expertly trained and fully

staffed team to maintain the greens, fairways, and bunkers.

During the time of “stay at home”, the club’s restaurant, “On the Green Bar & Grille” was able to accommodate many Tanglwood residents who took advantage of their delivery and take-out service. June brought Pike County to the Green stage and the opening of their outdoor on the deck service with its breath-taking view of Lake Tanglwood.

Currently the club is adding a snack bar to better serve golfers as they go from the front nine to the back nine. Wednesday seems to be a favorite as local DJ, Adam Owens, hosts Trivia Night now on the deck area to comply with social distancing.

Teams compete while munching on the pub menu specialties, for gift cards and bragging rights.

CULVERT PROJECT: FINAL PHASE

The culvert repair on Tanglwood Drive by the playground and Briarwood Trail is now completed. In 2018 the retaining wall of the culvert failed and our Maintenance crew set up barriers to restrict traffic to one lane in this area. After examination by Kiley Engineering a plan of attack was developed and project estimate was determined. In the months following TLCA was able to secure a sizable grant for the work through the Economic Development Council of Pike County. The Council submitted application on behalf of Tanglwood and was awarded $75,000 towards this project. Our local legislator, State Senator Lisa Baker, provided valuable assistance. During the summer of 2019 the work on the initial stage of reconstruction was finished and now the guardrail and grading are in place.

UPGRADES AT THE COMMUNITY CENTER Reports in the news these last few months reveal an increase in home improvements and brisk business at hardware stores, lumber yards, and big box types such as Home Depot. Naturally, TLCA continues to upgrade and keep our in-common facilities in good repair. Last year the interior of our Community Center was redone with improved lighting and painting. There was also a project completed to repair the outside drainage along the front of the building.

This year the exterior was re-sided to match the Chalet and an attractive, large, two-sided wooded sign was installed along the front of the property.

WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT BOCCE BALL? Bocce is a time-honored sport that has been played for centuries around the world. While it has been regarded as a game for the common people, there was a time when playing was reserved strictly for nobility. These days, in parts of Europe, it is commonplace to see groups of people playing bocce in the park. In recent years, bocce has gained popularity in the US and sets are widely available in discount stores around the country.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF BOCCE

The first documented history of the game was in 5200 BC in a painting in an Egyptian tomb.

Bocce spread through Palestine and by 600 BC was adopted by the Greeks, who passed it on to the Romans.

In 1319 AD, bocce was prohibited from play by anyone of lesser than noble status, as it was feared that it took too much time away from practical endeavors and military training.

By 1519, the game once again became public and spread to places like Belgium and Holland.

The Republic of Venice condemned the sport in 1576 and the Catholic Church prohibited clergymen from playing bocce.

Guissepi Garibaldi, sometimes referred to as the George Washington of Italy, popularized the sport and made it what it is today whilst unifying Italy.

In 1896, the first Bocce Olympiad was played in Athens, Greece. It has been an international sport ever since.

The first bocce clubs were formed in Italy and the first recorded Italian league was established in 1947. This was also the first year of the annual Bocce World Championships.

Bocce is a fun outdoor game for the whole family, employing much strategy and skill. It can be played by individuals or in teams. The objective is fairly clear and the basic skill is easy to develop. With a small investment and readily available materials, you can build a simple bocce court in your yard that will provide hours of fun for family and friends.

The rules of bocce vary dramatically from tournament play to basic backyard enjoyment. While fun to watch, the tournament rules are much more stringent and require a court that is not practical for most US yards. The simplified rules make it much more attainable and easy for players of any age to comprehend. If official tournament rules are more your thing, a quick search of the internet will reveal many sites dedicated to the subject.

BASIC BACKYARD BOCCE RULES There can be up to 8 players.

Each team chooses a color or, if applicable, each person chooses a color and a pattern.

Determine who will go first. You may wish to flip a coin or choose the player with the closest birthday.

Choose a foul line that you must not cross when throwing your Bocce ball. If using a walled court, stand outside of the frame.

The first player tosses out the pallino (smaller target ball that comes with the set).

The first player then begins play by throwing out a bocce ball attempting to get as close to the pallino, as possible.

The next team or person takes a shot at getting their ball closer to the pallino than the first player. If they succeed their ball is called “inside”.

The second player continues until they have either gotten a bocce ball “inside” or they have thrown all of their balls.

Play continues until all balls have been thrown.

Points are awarded to the team with the most “inside” balls.

Only the team with the most “inside” balls gets points.

In the event of a tie, no points are awarded.

The winner of each match throws the pallino and first ball for the next match.

Game is won by the first player to reach 13 points.

Note: It is perfectly acceptable to hit and move the pallino into a different position with your bocce ball, thus potentially changing the “inside” balls. Likewise, it is acceptable to knock an opponent’s balls into a different position. You may also bank off of your own bocce balls or your opponent’s.

Veteran’s Memorial Tanglwood Lakes recently installed a veteran’s memorial at the TLCA Community Center. The memorial honors all who served in the military. The various branches are identified with grave markers and American flags, and a statue of a combat soldier stands in the center of the memorial with an American flag.

By Elisabeth Muller I am writing this piece for the August/September Newsletter, but it’s early July. I got to thinking, why is September called September (with the prefix for ‘seven’ in its name), and yet it’s the ninth month of the year? Likewise with October, November and December; they should be the 10th, 11th and 12th months, respectively. What’s going on?

According to dictionary.com and other sources, during the time of the Roman Empire, there were only 10 months in the year, the first six months being named Martius, Aprillis, Maius, Junius, Quintillis and Sextillis (Quintillis was the 5th month and Sextillis was the 6th month.) In 45 BC, Julius Caesar introduced the Julian calendar (named after himself, of course) and added the 2 months of January and February as well as re-naming Quintillis after himself (which is why we call that month July), and Sextilllis after Augustus Caesar.

Whatever you want to call them, August and September are lovely months here in the Pocono Mountains. Let’s see what’s happening in our area! (NOTE: the cases of COVID-19 are going up, so please bear in mind that you should check with the following places before heading out as hours and events are subject to change.)

If you’re in Milford, you may want to check out Raymondskill Falls (the tallest Waterfall in PA!) and the Raymondskill Creek Trail. The waterfall has three tiers with lots of scenic views.

The trail is short but it is rocky and quite uneven and steep so please be sure to wear good sturdy shoes. The upper area of the falls will give you a view of the upper pool and the top of the drop. For a scenic ride down Memory Lane, consider taking a tour of the area’s covered bridges. Covered bridges were covered to protect the wooden structure below and prevent rain, ice and snow building up and becoming slippery on the oiled planks of the bridge. After the Civil War, most wooden bridges were considered obsolete and were replaced with iron structures.

However, Pennsylvania continued to preserve their covered bridges and as a result, we now have the most covered bridges in America. Nearby Lehigh County has seven covered bridges, making it one of the two counties in PA with the most covered bridges. FROM OUR NEEDLES The Tanglwoolies recently donated four “Sweet Treat Baskets” for the Vets for Vets Golf Outing on July 27th. Beautiful Patriotic Blankets were crocheted by Brigitte Adams, Clementina Hertz and Barbara Smith.

The Tanglquilters completed their first quilt (pictured below) and will be displayed at the Chalet in the next few weeks. Ed Weimer, a resident of Tanglwood, donated the fabric to our quilters. Tickets/chances will be available at the chalet. Proceeds from the quilt sale will benefit Vets for Vets. The drawing for the quilt will be in November.

The Tanglquilters are working on a children’s quilt from fabric donated by Pat Orr. The quilt will be a gift to The Ronald McDonald House in Scranton. We are also making children’s masks for the Ronald McDonald House.

CaroleAnn Gagnon designed and made beautiful curtains for the Community Center. The new window dressing will be up in a few weeks.

If you like to sew, knit or crochet, you are always welcome to our group. We meet every Wednesday from 10:00-12:00 in the Community Center. We protect ourselves and others by wearing masks and keeping a social distance.

History of Labor Day (www.history.com) Americans are very traditional folks, especially when it comes to our holidays and holy days. We use these events to mark time and create memories.

Labor Day 2020 is on Monday, September 7. Labor Day pays tribute to the contributions and achievements of American workers and is traditionally observed on the first Monday in September. It was created by the labor movement in the late 19th century and became a federal holiday in 1894. Labor Day weekend also symbolizes the end of summer for many Americans, and is celebrated with parties, street parades and athletic events.

Why Do We Celebrate Labor Day?

Labor Day, an annual celebration of workers and their achievements, originated during one of American labor history’s most dismal chapters.

In the late 1800s, at the height of the Industrial Revolution in the United States, the average American worked 12-hour days and seven-day weeks in order to eke out a basic living. Despite restrictions in some states, children as young as 5 or 6 toiled in mills, factories and mines across the country, earning a fraction of their adult counterparts’ wages.

People of all ages, particularly the very poor and recent immigrants, often faced extremely unsafe working conditions, with insufficient access to fresh air, sanitary facilities and breaks.

As manufacturing increasingly supplanted agriculture as the wellspring of American employment, labor unions, which had first appeared in the late 18th century, grew more prominent and vocal. They began organizing strikes and rallies to protest poor conditions and compel employers to renegotiate hours and pay.

Many of these events turned violent during this period, including the infamous Haymarket Riot of 1886, in which several Chicago policemen and workers were killed.

Others gave rise to longstanding traditions: On September 5, 1882, 10,000 workers took unpaid time off to march from City Hall to Union Square in New York City, holding the first Labor Day parade in U.S. history.

The idea of a “workingmen’s holiday,” celebrated on the first Monday in September, caught on in other industrial centers across the country, and many states passed legislation recognizing it.

Congress would not legalize the holiday until 12 years later, when a watershed moment in American labor history brought workers’ rights squarely into the public’s view. On May 11, 1894, employees of the Pullman Palace Car Company in Chicago went on strike to protest wage cuts and the firing of union representatives.

On June 26, the American Railroad Union, led by Eugene V. Debs, called for a boycott of all Pullman railway cars, crippling railroad traffic nationwide.

To break the Pullman strike, the federal government dispatched troops to Chicago, unleashing a wave of riots that resulted in the deaths of more than a dozen workers.

Who Created Labor Day?

In the wake of this massive unrest and in an attempt to repair ties with American workers, Congress passed an act making Labor Day a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories. On June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed it into law. More than a century later, the true founder of Labor Day has yet to be identified.

Outdoor Fun Many Tanglwood residents, families from young to old, have memories of sitting around an outdoor campfire. It might be listening to those ghost stories, singing folk songs, or the ever-popular roasting of marshmallows and making s’mores that top the list of recollections such that the firepit or campfire gathering is increasing in Summertime popularity.

Naturally, our first concern is for safety of our environment and as Smokey Bear told us, “Only you can prevent forest fires!” Our Tanglwood Lakes Rules and Regulations document states: #218 Burning - Open fires for any purpose are strictly prohibited. Small, self-contained, lowflame fires in off the ground, fire containers sold for the purpose of recreational fires only are permitted. A 6 foot gravel buffer is required around the fire container. An adult shall be present at all times during the burning of a recreational fire. A fire extinguishing mechanism shall be within reach of a recreational fire at all times.

Periodically the Tafton Fire Company will advise TLCA if there are any burn restrictions.

Preparing your fire pit area:

If not set right or if basic safety procedures aren’t taken, a fun outdoor fire can go from terrific to terrible. Below are some tips for having the safest backyard fire possible.

Only build a fire in enclosed, contained areas such as an outdoor chiminea, fire bowl or fire pit.

Clear the area around the pit of dry paper, grass, leaves, or pine needles to avoid random sparks from igniting them.

Ashes that are 2 or 3 days old may appear to be safe, but can still retain enough heat to cause an unwanted fire.

•

Do not discard hot ashes in a compost pile, paper bag cardboard box or anything that is combustible.

•

Also, be careful in handling partially burned wood. The wood may still be smoldering and cause a serious burn.

•

Keep a first-aid kit nearby to treat minor burns.

Consider adding a fire pit screen to contain sparks — a great option especially if children will be around the fire.

•

Never leave children unsupervised. They tend to not realize the danger of fire and often get too close to one.

Make sure the pit is on a flat surface in an open area — NOT underneath trees or roofs or in a building to avoid anything accidentally catching on fire.

“Barbeque now knows no season. Cooking over coals just makes food taste great, and if time is taken for marinating or enhancing the meat, fish, or poultry with a sauce or chutney, simplicity becomes sublime. Remember, no rushing allowed. The slower your timing when you cook, the juicier, more tender, and tastier the results will be.” Here are some important food safety tips for outdoor dining: To pack and transport food, keep your cold food cold, keep coolers closed (you may want to separate drinks from perishables so the perishable food stays colder longer), keep foods separate and well wrapped (don’t let meat or fish juices contaminate crudité, for example) and always wash your fruits and veggies yourself.

Some safe grilling tips:

• Only marinate foods in the refrigerator • Do not reuse platters or utensils without washing them thoroughly • Keep hot food hot and be sure to cook meat, poultry and fish thoroughly • Cook foods immediately after ‘partial cooking’ • Check to be sure there are no foreign objects in the food (bits of foil, bristles, etc.)

• Clean the picnic site before eating. You may want to bring a tablecloth from home and have moist towelettes or hand sanitizer available if there is no running water at the site.

Grilled Summer Squash and Red Onion with Feta ½ c plus 3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil, plus more for the grill 1 finely grated garlic clove ¼ c white wine vinegar 4 medium summer squash and/or zucchini, cut lengthwise, ¼” thick 1 medium red onion, cut through root end into 8 wedges 2 bay leaves Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper 8 oz feta, crumbled into large pieces 4 banana peppers from a jar, thinly sliced crosswise Generous pinch crushed red pepper flakes

--Prepare grill: heat to medium high and lightly oil grate.

Whisk garlic, vinegar and 1/2 cup oil in bowl to combine; set aside.

--Toss squash, onion and bay leaves on rimmed baking sheet with remaining 3 tbsp oil to coat. Season generously with salt and black pepper --Arrange squash and onion on grate. Grill vegetables undisturbed until grill marks appear, about 3 minutes. Turn over and grill until tender and starting to release liquid, about 2 minutes. Transfer back to baking sheet. Grill onion, turning occasionally, until tender and charred around the edges, about 5 minutes. Transfer back to baking sheet.

--Arrange veggies, bay leaves and feta on rimmed platter and pour reserved marinade over them. Scatter banana peppers on top and sprinkle with red pepper flakes. Let sit at least 15 minutes or up to 1 hour before serving.

Asian-Inspired Steak 1 flank steak ½ c soy sauce 2 tbsp canola oil (can use combination of sesame oil and canola oil) 3 tbsp honey 1 tsp freshly grated ginger 1 clove crushed garlic Combine sauce ingredients until smooth and well blended.

Pour into a pan large enough for the steak. Add steak, turn to coat, and marinate, covered, in refrigerator for several hours or overnight, turning occasionally. Grill until done to your liking and let stand 5 minutes. Cut on the diagonal.

• Perishable cold foods should not sit out for longer than 2 hours or 1 hour if it’s over 90 degrees F. You can keep cold foods on ice as long as it is wrapped and you have plenty of ice on hand. If food sits out for too long, throw it away (the old adage comes in handy here: “When in doubt, throw it out!”) The same applies to hot foods. Wrap hot food well and place it in an insulated container until ready to serve.

The Barefoot Contessa’s Barbeque Sauce: ½ c canola oil

From David Tamarkin, Epicurious: Roasted Garlic Herb Sauce Use this sauce to marinate fish, season rice or flavor scrambled eggs!

1 ½ c chopped yellow onion 1 tbsp minced garlic

1 head of garlic, separated into cloves, unpeeled

1 c tomato paste

2 c packed parsley leaves with tender stems

1 c cider vinegar

1 c packed mint leaves

1 c honey

1 c extra virgin olive oil

½ c Worcestershire sauce

1 tsp finely grated lemon zest

1 c Dijon mustard

1 tbsp plus 1 tsp fresh lemon juice

½ c soy sauce

1 c hoisin sauce

1 tsp crushed red pepper flakes

2 tbsp chili powder

¾ tsp kosher salt

1 tbsp ground cumin

1 ½ tsp crushed red pepper flakes

Heat oil in large saucepan over low heat. Add onion and cook 10-15 minutes, or until onion is translucent but not browned. Add garlic and cook for 1 more minute. Add remaining ingredients and bring to a boil, then lower the heat and simmer uncovered for 30 minutes. You may use it immediately or refrigerate it and save it for later. It lasts for weeks in the fridge.

Heat a medium, dry, heavy skillet over medium heat. Roast garlic, stirring occasionally, until skins have darkened on all sides and cloves are soft inside, about 12 – 15 minutes.

Let cool.

Peel skins and discard; transfer cloves to a blender. Add remaining ingredients and blend until a pesto-like sauce forms. This sauce can be made 5 days ahead. Store in refrigerator in air-tight container or freeze for up to 1 month.

Ready, set, eat!

This Vietnamese-inspired sauce from Real Simple would be great on grilled shrimp or chicken. Brush it on while your food is cooking for a spicy and deliciously different meal. There are a lot of ingredients, but they are all available at local grocers (some items are in the international aisle.)

1/3 c rice vinegar

1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

1 tbsp sambal oelek or sriracha

1 tsp sugar

fresh juice of 2 limes 1 ½ tsp soy sauce 1 tsp dry sherry

2 tbsp canola oil

3 tbsp finely chopped fresh cilantro

Stir vinegar, lime juice, sambal oelek, Worcestershire sauce, sherry and soy sauce in a small bowl. Whisk in oil and sugar until smooth. Stir in cilantro. Divide the sauce and brush some over shrimp or chicken while grilling and save some for dipping! Serve with rice or mei fun noodles.

The Luna Moth Do you know what this is in the photo?

A recent visitor to Tanglwood was this fluorescent, ethereal creature called a Luna Moth. Sighting a Luna Moth is sometimes associated with an increase of intuition or psychic perception. Here is some information gleaned from Wikipedia. (en.wikipedia.org)

The Luna moth (Actias luna) is a Nearctic moth in the family Saturniidae, subfamily Saturniinae, a group commonly known as giant silk moths. It has lime-green colored wings and a white body. The larvae (caterpillars) are also green. Typically, it has a wingspan of roughly 114 mm (4.5 in), but can exceed 178 mm (7.0 in), making it one of the larger moths in North America. Across Canada, it has one generation per year, with the winged adults appearing in late May or early June, whereas farther south it will have two or even three generations per year, the first appearance as early as March in southern parts of the United States.

As defense mechanisms, larvae emit clicks as a warning and also regurgitate intestinal contents, confirmed as having a deterrent effect on a variety of predators. The elongated tails of the hindwings are thought to confuse the echolocation detection used by predatory bats.

The Luna moth is found in North America, from east of the Great Plains in the United States – Florida to Maine, and from Saskatchewan eastward through central Quebec to Nova Scotia in Canada. Luna moths are rarely found in Western Europe as vagrants.

Description - The larvae may take on a reddish-brown color just prior to cocooning. Fifth-instar larvae descend to the ground and use silk to bind dead leaves around the cocoon. The imagoes (winged, sexually mature), often referred to as ‘adult moths,’ emerge from the pupae with the wings small, crumpled and held close to the body. Over a period of several hours the wings will enlarge to full size. Wingspan is typically 8–11.5 cm (3.1–4.5 in), and in rare instances as much as 17.78 cm (7.00 in). Females and males are similar in size and appearance: green wings, eyespots on both forewings and hind wings, and long, sometimes somewhat twisted tails extending from the back edge of the hindwings. Bodies are white and hairy.

Adults have vestigial mouthparts and do not feed. Energy is from fat stores created while a caterpillar.

The forward edge of the forewing is dark-colored and thick, tapering in thickness from the thorax to the wing tip. Its color can range from maroon to brown. The eyespots, one per wing, are oval in shape on the forewings and round on the hindwings. Each eyespot can have arcs of black, blue, red, yellow, green or white. The eyespots are thought to confuse potential predators.

There are some sex-determined and regional differences in appearance. Females will have a larger abdomen compared to males because it contains 200–400 eggs. Both sexes have antennae, but on the male, much longer and wider. Wing color is blue-green in the north and for the over-wintering generation in the central and southern states; second and third generation wing color has more of a yellow-green tint.

Based on the climate in which they live, Luna moths produce different numbers of generations per year. In Canada and northern regions of the United States they are univoltine, meaning one generation per year. Life stages are approximately two weeks as eggs, 6–7 weeks as larvae, nine months as pupae, finishing with one week as winged adults appearing in late May or early June.

In the mid-Atlantic states the species is bivoltine, and farther south trivoltine, meaning respectively two and three generations per year.

In the central states the first generation appears in April, second in July. Even farther south, first generation appears as early as March, with second and third spaced eight to ten weeks later.

A Note from the Treasurer As you are aware, from the onset of the Corona Virus pandemic we have been unable to hold public meetings. Without monthly open Board meetings there has been no opportunity to hear the Treasurer’s reports regarding the financial status of the association as we proceed through the year.

The top line is that the Association is in very sound financial shape.

Despite the hard economic times caused by the pandemic, to date, 93% of homeowners have paid the 2020 assessment. Twenty-eight homes in the community were sold in the first 6 months of the year, positively impacting the fund designated to support new capital purchases. We were able to take advantage of the Payroll Protection Act passed by Congress, receiving a low-cost loan to be used to keep our employees working and to make mortgage and utility payments. Most, if not all, will be forgiven by complying with the act, which we are doing. Finally, we deposited a significant amount of money in the Reserve Fund, enabling the community to continue with the multiple year road paving and lake preservation programs, as well as providing funds for future replacement projects, planned and unplanned.
