With another Board of Directors election upon us, I am asking and urging all members to get involved and cast their vote for their best choice. The candidate profiles are listed in this edition of the SCE News, I’m asking all too please carefully review them and make the best choice. Remember that you can vote for up to three candidates. I also encourage you to vote yes to the by-law amendment change; this change will allow keeping all member status information confidential. This is your chance to have direct input on how your community is managed.

This past month the Board of Directors met to begin review of the projects & priorities for the 2016 Operating and Capital budgets. I am pleased to report that this is the earliest we have begun this process and together with the Finance Committee our goal is to ensure that your association dues are kept in line with our expenses and operating obligations. Rest assured knowing we will continue to focus on cost containment whenever possible. For example, you might not know that the 2015 adopted Operating Budget remained flat over 2014. It is my belief that the tradeoffs made have resulted in limited impact to our homeowners, which I believe is a “good news” story. However, this also means we are going to need to be even smarter when approaching our budget this year as well as the coming years. So, I encourage you to add your viewpoint to the mix. Numerous Finance Committee meetings will be held in the next several months, which will be open to all homeowners. I encourage you to attend so you can hear and see firsthand how the process happens.

I occasionally hear comments from members about amenities they would like to see improved or changed. The process to make this happen is our strategic planning process; and as we get closer to starting the process, I’d like to ask all members to start thinking about what improvement projects you would like to see included in the plan. The board would like to continue our on-going capital improvement program with projects that help improve our common areas and amenities or improve our overall quality of life. You can provide your comments directly to the Board at scebod@sawcreek.org.

I am again asking you to be involved in OUR community. Not only can volunteering offset cost to homeowners, it can be a lot of fun and a great way to get to know your neighbors. Saw Creek continues to be for me, the best community in our area and I am proud to live here. The more we put into the community the more we will get out of it. There’s still much more to be done but it only gets better.

BUILDING & ARCHITECTURAL COMMITTEE – 3 openings – Involved with issues involving our physical plant and homeowner properties, advises and recommends to the board actions to be taken.

FINANCE COMMITTEE – 1 opening – This committee submits recommendations to the Board on all budget line items of revenue and expense and conducts a timely proves of open meetings and hearings to develop the proposed budget for the Board of Directors each year.

RECREATION COMMITTEE – 3 openings – This committee recommends rules and actions to enhance community recreation, cultural and special events and newcomer welcome activities of interest to both young youth and adults.

We want to make all the activities of the board as open as possible. All residents and homeowners are welcome to attend our meetings. The meetings are usually held at the TOW Complex, Mountain Room, at 10AM on the second Saturday of every month. We try to keep the HOA as friendly and un-intrusive as possible, so please feel free to come to a meeting—even if it’s only to meet us and get to know the members of the board a little better.

From Your Board of Directors: Saw Creek Estates Donates Venison to Local Charity The highly controversial deer cull has officially come to a close for the 2014/15 season and out of this controversy comes a beacon of light.

The deer were transported to a local processing facility and turned into packages of ground venison prior to being sent to Bushkill Outreach.

In 2014, the PA Game Commission approved 300 deer harvest tags for the community’s culling operation, conducted by US Department of Agriculture Wildlife Biologists. The cull, which ran from December 2014 to March 2015, was deemed essential to protect the long-term health of the community, its deer and its forest. Deer eat tree seedlings and other vegetation, depriving other wildlife of food and shelter and imperiling the viability of the forest.

The association paid for the USDA sharpshooters and all deer processing costs. The total project costs are not yet known because receipt of the final USDA report is still pending.

When the report is submitted by the USDA, the full results of the operation will be made available to all members upon request.

The cull has resulted in the donation of 7,150 pounds of venison to Bushkill Outreach, a local food bank which provides a variety of services and support to families in need and low income seniors.

Kate Newman of Bushkill Outreach said venison donations are welcomed and well-received among clients, many of whom are already familiar with game meat. The low-fat meat is also healthier than many other types of meat and works well for those with certain dietary restrictions. “We’ve always been extremely grateful for venison donations,” she said. “Protein sources tend to be harder to come by as donated products.” Bushkill Outreach already has a relationship with hunters, farmers and fishers who provide donated fish and game to the food bank, but this is the first instance she’s aware of where a venison donation came directly from a community via culling.

aDMINISTRaTION General Manager’s Report

By David W. Martin At a Town Hall Meeting on April 18th, 2015 the Board of Directors presented a draft of the Strategic Plan for Saw Creek Estates Community Association. The draft includes guidance and suggested outcomes on a wide range of far-reaching topics intended to guide current and future leaders of our community.

One of the most important points raised at the Town Hall Meeting is this – it is a draft plan, not a list of things that have already been decided. For you, the members of the community, the draft plan represents a starting point to give you ideas of what is possible. What could or might be done, not what will be done.

The Board will be accepting public comments on the draft plan for the next several weeks so that they can be more certain that the final version accurately reflects your wants and needs. But even then, as always, the final strategic plan will remain a guiding document, not a list of things we must do. It is a plan, a direction. Its purpose is to facilitate decisions, not prejudge them.

On several occasions in the past, I’ve used this space to make a direct appeal to each of our members and residents, asking for individual feedback on certain issues. The last time I did this was back in March of 2012 when I raised the question of why we don’t hear more often from the vast majority of Saw Creek members. Many of you responded by sharing your thoughts both positive and negative about the current state and direction of the community. I was extremely grateful for your comments. They provide much needed feedback and direction for those of us who are here to serve you.

The time has come again for me to ask that you please take just a few moments of your time to make your voices heard. The Board and management desperately need to hear from you on the subject of the draft Strategic Plan. I am hoping that you will share your thoughts and suggestions in a constructive way so that we end up with a better strategic plan which truly reflects the needs and aspirations of the majority of our members. So please answer the call. Let us know

Recreation Director’s Report

By George McCormick, Recreation Director The Recreation Department would like to thank all of the members and guests who came out to the ski hill and the Winter Carnival this past season.

We had a successful season at our main winter recreation facility. We are planning on making the coming summer just as successful. Lifeguard certification began in April and will be completed in June. Swim lessons can be booked from the end of June until August. All pools will be operating on summer hours after June 20th.

Please keep an eye out for upcoming summer programs, especially special events that we will be planning to help raise funds for the Bushkill Fire Department. And of course, we are planning on having a great summer with some of our traditional programs, such as Community Day (June 20th), holiday pool BBQ’s (Memorial Day, July 4th weekends) and more. Also, the SCE Youth Summer Camp program will return this year. The six week program for kids, ages 5-12, will be an extra week longer in 2015 because we will start on June 29th with a week-long Art & Music camp.

Plus, the camp will be run all day (9am – 5pm), Monday – Friday. Camp fees are set at $60 per camper (multiple child and full program discounts are available, please call Recreation).

Saw Creek Employees are Outstanding

By Peggy Gottschau, Director of Human Resources and Administration In 2014 Saw Creek Management rolled out a new program which recognizes employees for going above and beyond in their daily work routine.

Named the Outstanding Performance Recognition Award (OPR), the premise of the program is to have employees nominated their peers based on certain actions and characteristics which demonstrate going the extra mile in their work.

Each quarter the General Manager and I review the nominations that were received and pick a winner. Winners are chosen based on quality of work, not quantity of nominations received and are based on specific characteristics pertaining to an employee’s character, interpersonal skills, motivational/leadership skills and safety awareness.

The first year of the Outstanding Performance Recognition Award was an overwhelming success.

Quarterly winners are able to pick from their choice of prizes which include an extra PTO day or $50.00 Gift Certificate to an establishment of their choice. It was great to see so many employees nominating their fellow workers for recognition.

This made for some great competition each quarter and made it difficult to choose between so many deserving individuals.

While all Saw Creek employees should be acknowledged for their hard work and dedication, there are a few who stood out above the crowd.

Here is a summary of our quarterly winners.

1. Jessica VanDerVliet - Director of Member Services, Jessica VanDerVliet was the first recipient of Saw Creek’s Outstanding Performance Award. Jessica was nominated by one of her peers because of her willingness to go above and beyond to get the job done. Specifically, while on

maternity leave last January, Jessica came into the Member Services Office with her newborn baby in tow to fix a problem with the phone lines.

2. We had a tie for our second quarter with Public Safety’s Crystal Bryant and Maintenance’s Sean O’Connor. Crystal was nominated for her positive attitude and enthusiastic approach to her work.

Even on the coldest, darkest, gloomiest mornings, Crystal can be seen cheerfully watching over the children at the VIP bus stop, ensuring their safety.

Anyone who observes Crystal on the job can clearly see her level of devotion and selflessness as she keeps the community’s children safe.

Sean O’Connor was also nominated for his positive attitude and exceptional working relationships with his co-workers, not only in his department, but company-wide. Sean will never be heard saying “not my job” and exemplifies what it means to be a true team player as he is always willing to lend an extra hand to any department for any reason.

3. Karen Hanks - Public Safety Dispatcher Karen Hanks has always demonstrated her willingness to go above and beyond since the day she was hired back in 2007. This willingness extends beyond the Public Safety Department as she is always willing to pitch in where she can in other departments.

This past summer, the Member Services Office was short staffed due to employee injuries and illnesses.

Karen jumped right in to help, giving up her days off and rearranging her personal schedule so she could help man the front desk, enabling us to keep the office open for our members.

4. Pat Siravo—Fitness Center Attendant Pat Siravo also demonstrated his willingness to go above and

beyond. During a snow storm, Pat took it upon himself to call members that he knew regularly utilized the fitness center on that particular day to inform them that the facility was closing so that they wouldn’t venture out. When Pat was congratulated on his win he stated he was only doing what he felt was natural.

On March 19, 2015 a luncheon was held at the Top to honor all nominees and quarterly winners as a way to thank them for their hard work and service to the Saw Creek community. From the 5 winners mentioned above Sean O’Connor was recognized as Saw Creek’s “Outstanding Performer of the Year”. Congratulations to everyone involved and thanks for all your hard work.

It’s time to Institute the Golden Rule: Treat others how you want to be treated…

Belinda A Basnight – Communications Coordinator Next to bullying and outright physical harm, common courtesy is becoming increasingly uncommon - in the everyday world and moreover the workplace.

In a 2011 research survey, Christine Porath, PH. D and Christine Pearson, PH.D - Experts in the fields of Workplace Incivility, Leadership, Team Building, and Dysfunctional Behavior in the Workplace, found rudeness can/will affect an organization/company’s bottom line – i.e.: lower productivity, higher turnover and absenteeism; and that it can spread beyond the office and into (member) relationships.

Treat others how you want to be treated… The Golden Rule goes far beyond simply being kind to one another, going out of your way to be available/ helpful to those in need. Of course we want others to be of assistance when in a bind or pleasant in an unfavorable circumstance; but being human we all make errors in judgment and activities. It’s really just about adjusting your views and attitudes.

There are many theories on how the situation of rudeness and disrespect in a community workplace can be resolved:

First one must be educated on what rudeness looks like in the workplace. Disrespect can be exhibited vocally or in silence. It can be as subtle as rolling one’s eyes to berating a colleague in a public arena (with or without the use of profanity).

•

Giving colleagues/residents the silent treatment.

•

Interrupting or over-talking someone when they are speaking.

•

Speaking to people in a condescending way.

•

Leaving trash and food containers in public areas.

•

Excluding colleagues from projects or meetings even though they should (by role and/or responsibilities) be included.

•

Being late for events/meetings – in other words not respecting someone else’s time.

Just remember, all of these examples (and others like them) are forms of disrespect.

Respect is a lot more than the old cliché, “respect is earned not given”. Respect includes feeling safe and secure about: •

Effective correspondences – voice or written, communicate in a healthy and effective manner in the workplace.

•

Diversity and acceptance – welcoming people who are similar to and/or different: inclusive but not limited to race, religion, creed, income, or lifestyle. And valuing individuals for what they contribute - not who they are.

•

Accessibility and accommodation – provide open lines of communication. Acknowledge wants and or needs required for proficiency and efficiency – Help us help you...

•

Effective conflict transformation and dispute resolution – Saw creek provides and a variety of rules, regulations, policies and procedures for organizational structure, behaviors, attitudes and/or changing relationships for the better, resolving disputes and establishing and maintaining order.

•

Ongoing and active improvement – everyone plays a role in continually trying to improve Saw Creek Estates Community Association.

Common examples of workplace conflict include: •

Gossiping/talking behind someone’s back.

As occupants of this community, we should all make it an obligation to take accountability for what and how we say things, including our actions in order to better the relationship between the Saw Creek Administration and the Members/Residents of the community at large.

Letters to the editor

What can I say - with the TOP being filled with family, friends, skiers and guests from all over the community, the weekend activities at the TOP from the Chill & Grill, Snack Bar, back up to the restaurant, lunch to dinner and brunch on Sunday was EXCEPTIONAL! I watched the ENTIRE staff all work together non-stop as a TEAM to ensure all guests received friendly and professional service with GREAT food and entertainment!

Jeremy prepared a special menu for the evening and instead of the pub menu offerings, I selected one of the special dinner specialties—Pork Prime Rib. It was excellent and the peach/raspberry sauce was exceptional. Everything was presented professionally with the perfect portions--not too large. The special menu included selected wines, appetizers, and desserts as well. All equally delicious! The service was perfect—friendly, professional and relaxing, not rushed.

Sunday’s brunch was just as delicious, fresh and tasty same as the Valentine’s Dinner the evening before.

The homemade corned beef hash and the omelet station were two of my favorites. I cannot forget the Special Chocolate Martini’s……..and yes, just AWESOME for brunch!! Even with the cold and bad weather conditions, the Chill & Grill as well as the Restaurant was packed all day, again, the entire team serving EVERYONE quick and efficient. It was really nice seeing long lines at the snack bar as well as not seeing an empty seat in the restaurant for lunch and dinner!!

The most important issue is the upkeep of the community. We have a lot of foreclosed homes and many of them are not been keep well. During the summer, the grass is not cut often enough and during the fall and winter we there are leaves on the grass and the driveway are not shoveled when it snows.

How have you been involved in the community to date?

No I haven’t. I didn’t even know that I could be. There should be more of an outreach to the community of ways to get involved and activates going on in the communities.

What skills do you possess that make you a great candidate for the SCE Board of Directors?

I am a tax accountant and have currently own my out tax and accounting business. I think I can bring more an analytical mindset to the board as well as getting people with differences on the same page What is your pertinent background, education or experience as a candidate?

I am a graduate of Baruch College with a BBA in Accounting. I work at Skadden Arps as a Payroll Manager for 7 years and then at Pricewaterhouse Coppers LLP as a tax accountant for 4 years. I current own Liberty Tax Service (7 locals throughout NY, PA and AL)

The community needs to have information and answers to questions that they have in a timely manner. Manny homeowners come to their homes on the weekends and are unable to come to the monthly BOD meetings All homeowners in good standing should be able to have open dialog with the BOD Our Community has gone through a division of opinions concerning the killing of the Deer and it is time to move on. I have been told that the Deer meat was donated to the Bushkill Out Reach Food Pantry It was stated in our last Town Hall meeting that Saw Creek would donate the meat. The community needs to know that it was done through information in our Current Newspaper.

It is time for this community to move on and address the current issues or concerns we have at hand and all homeowners shall have any and all concerns addressed in a timely manner. We are the ones that pay our dues and fund the expenses for our community and should be treated with respect and receive all information and communication available to us upon request in a timely manner. The BOD is elected by the community and as stated in the Board of Directors Code of Conduct Board Members will work for the common goof of the members of the Association and not for any private or personal interest it is the community that they need to work for and I will commit to follow that responsibility.

I have been the Treasurer for several years FOR THE COMMUNITY. What do you think is the single most important challenge facing the community today and why?

I’m Mark Pender and I hope to improve what is already a fabulous community. My wife Pat and I have made our lives here for 18 great years and simply love it!

On public policy, I believe Saw Creek has to carefully watch spending given what are still deep ongoing declines in Pocono home values. “Under Water” is an increasingly familiar and unwelcome assessment for way too many homeowners here, Pat and I included.

Still, I strongly support the improvement of our amenities and I especially support the expansion of our children’s programs. I also strongly support the management of our woodlands by qualified scientists to keep our environment as safe and healthy as possible.

These are policies that would further promote Saw Creek as a great place to live and in turn support home values.

How have you been involved in the community to date?

I helped lead the 2014 discussion of the community’s wildlife management plans.

What do you think is the single most important challenge facing the community today and why?

I think the most important challenge we face as a community is the lack of participation by the homeowners in the affairs of the community. I see a small group of homeowners involved and engaged. Most of them serve on more than one committee. I see the same people attending committee meetings and board meetings and volunteering at community events. This can lead to misunderstanding and mistrust between the homeowners and their Board.

How have you been involved in the community to date?

I am currently a member of the Board of Directors for SCECA and serve as Treasurer. Prior to being on the Board, I served on the Finance Committee and Rules Committee. I volunteer and help out where I can with the recreation and other community events. I try to attend all of the Board meetings and be informed of all that is going on in the community.

What skills do you possess that make you a great candidate for the SCE Board of Directors?

As a member of the Board I think I have demonstrated that I am able to work with others and make my decisions on what is in the best interest of the whole community and if I am elected to another term I will continue to do the same. I do not have a personal agenda. I am willing to hear all sides of any arguments and come to a decision on the facts presented. I will be able to use my experience and my background in accounting profession in making decisions that will be in the best interest of the community. My personality is that I am very patient to deal with any situations, conflicts and I think that will be a great asset to the Board.

What is your pertinent background, education or experience as a candidate?

Currently serving on the Board here at Saw Creek, I have served as director and as treasurer of the community where I lived prior to moving to Saw Creek. Currently I work for Metropolis Abstract Corp. in Elmsford, NY as Title Officer and Comptroller. I currently serve on boards of two non-profit organizations and also on the Board of Trustees of my church. I worked at NYC Dept. of Finance and was supervisor of a department that handled real estate transfers and tax collection.

What do you think is the single most important challenge facing the community today and why?

Enhancing the value of our homes and community. Saw Creek Estates is the finest community in the Poconos and it needs strong management to ensure it stays that way. I understand that we took a financial hit following 2008 but now is the time to focus on the future, strengthen our infrastructure, bring new owners to our community, enhance the amenities and reconnect the people who live here and have lost interest. I love coming to SCE as does my family. I want to ensure that I, and you, feel that way for years to come.

How have you been involved in the community to date?

I am a full time owner who is only here on the weekends. In the 3 years that we have owned our home I have participated in board meetings, have had my regular emails with David Martin regarding issues I see within the community and have been visible to both the board and other owners of SCE. Given that part-time owners still make up the majority of owners in SCE I believe that at least one of the board members should be a part-time member.

What skills do you possess that make you a great candidate for the SCE Board of Directors?

Having worked as an Architect I understand development. I have handled the marketing of over $6 billion of real estate. I believe in synergistic solutions where all win I have been the president of the board of my NYC Condo. I know how to market SCE thereby bringing value to all owners. But most important...I have been asked by too many SCE owners to run for the board. Skills: Management, marketing, budgeting, leadership and a team player.

What is your pertinent background, education or experience as a candidate?

Pratt Institute School of Architecture and Design I am the CEO of a NYC advertising agency (30 years).

I have been president of my condo board in NYC Appointed business advisor to President Clinton and President Bush teams.

On the Board of the NYS Fire Chiefs Association (FDNY) A volunteer fireman for over 35 years I have been on the board of the following: United Kidney Foundation Manhattan Community College, United Community Fund, Business Council for the UN, UN Office for Project Services, Newport Beach Conf.& Visitors Bureau.

To maintain, improve and preserve what we have! This includes increasing the value of our Homes and Properties. This includes maintaining first-rate condition of our Amenities, Facilities, Roads, Bridges, and Waterways. This includes preserving our Environment, Natural Resources, Forest and Wildlife. Saw Creek has been and still is a “great place” to Live. Our challenge is to keep it that way!

How have you been involved in the community to date?

I have previously served on the SCE Board for six consecutive (6) years. My last term ended July 2014. During my tenure I was involved with numerous projects including establishing an inhouse Public Safety Force; new Dumpster Areas; new Front & Rear Gate Houses; Ski Hill upgrades; new Tikki Bar; PPL Power Line Settlement; improving Road Maintenance; TOW Restaurant enhancements; Amenity upgrades; the Maintenance Operations Building; new Materials Storage Structure; and much more. As a member of The Saw Creek board, I was also a member of the Top-of-the-Word Restaurant Board. During my tenure on the Board I served periods as the Treasurer,Vice President and President. I authored the current Board of Directors “Code of Conduct” Policy.

Since 2007, I have served on Association Committees including Appeals, Beautification, Bylaws, Finance, Recreation, Ad-hoc Ski Amenity Evaluation, Ad-hoc Refuse Management, Ad-hoc Wild Life Management and Strategic Planning Committees.

I’m a member of the Saw Creek Men’s Club. My wife is a member of the Saw Creek Women’s Club. We both support community events and utilize the community amenities.

What skills do you possess that make you a great candidate for the SCE Board of Directors?

I’m an Air Force Veteran. I attended the University of California for Business Management. I worked over 40 years, as an Informational Technology (IT) Professional for several major corporations (IBM, American Can, Odell Industries, etc.) and my own Consulting Firm. I was a long time member and officer for chapters of the Association for Systems Management (ASM) and for the Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP).

In NJ, I served on the Municipal Planning and Zoning Boards. I served on a regional Recreational Park Commission. I was involved with the Boys Scouts for 25 years. I was a long time member of the local Chamber of Commerce and the Old Guard Men’s Club.

I have previously served on the Saw Creek Board for six (6) years. I have served on and I’m currently serving on several Association Committees. I try to attend all Board Meetings.

I have good Business, Financial, IT, Municipal Government, and Association experience. I can be a leader and be part of a team. I consider myself fair and open minded. I believe in serving my community.

What is your pertinent background, education or experience as a candidate?

My wife Sandra and I have been part of Saw Creek since its beginning. We purchased our Saw Creek lot in 1975 and built our house in 1976. In the 1980’s we purchased and later sold 2 additional lots. We expanded the size of our house in 2000. In 2003 our house was badly damaged by vandals.

We made major repairs and remained in Saw Creek. It was a good decision. We moved & retired permanently to Saw Creek in 2004. We purchased and merged an adjoining lot in 2005. We truly enjoy living in Saw Creek.

We have 3 sons and 4 grand-children. We are active within our church and local social clubs.

My hobbies are Golf and Gardening.

As a long time homeowner, I would welcome the opportunity to again serve on the Board. I have the time, energy and commitment to do so. I want to be part of the team to keep Saw Creek the “Premier Community” in the Poconos, now and in the future.

Ready, Set, Cook Challenge at Top of the World Restaurant Saturday April 11th at 3:00, there was a battle of the burners!

Three top notch chefs, including our own Chef Jeremy, competed head-to-head, LIVE at Top of the World Restaurant! The contest drew a lively crowd from all around – many arrived early to get a good seat.

The chef contestants: Jeremy Greene , Executive Chef at Top of the World; vs. Executive Chef Matt Gocek, and Chef Zack Gocek, both well known chef ’s in the Pocono Region. The three were divided into separate teams with selection of their sous chefs from those in the audience, who attended the event.

The challenge: create a dish/meal to accommodate at least 40 people, using ONLY the secret Protein/ fish designated by our Restaurant Manager, George Gerhart along with any of the extra pantry items, foods and seasonings provided! As a plus, each Chef was allowed one secret weapon – spice, herb, or ingredient to enhance their dishes.

The chefs and their assistants had 45 minutes to concoct delicious dishes.

Our panel of judges were our very own…all those who attended. Not only were they there to support family members and friends in the contest – they were judge and jury. They assessed the each teams dish based on creativity, eye appeal and of course - taste.

And the winning Chef and Team was – all of them! Each Chef won a round!

All the chefs are demanding a friendly rematch and look forward to another Ready, Set, Cook Battle real soon!

Nosey neighbor…no, it’s Neighborhood Watch: If you See/Hear/Smell something, say something…

What is Neighborhood watch, you ask? It’s the combined efforts of Public Safety, the Board, the residential safety committee – and the Saw Creek Estates Community. We all belong.

There are no meetings, extra patrols, or hard to follow rules/regulations.

to emergencies and crime. Even with motorized patrols, the odds of being able to spot a crime in progress (particularly at night) are rare. Your early call and (if needed) diligent investigative work after a crime can lead to a suspect being caught; nothing works as well as early alerts and information.

Example 1: You see someone walking around your neighbor’s house, looking in the windows (they are not home), and you don’t remember seeing this person at the residence before. Hmm, perhaps he’s the meter reader, or maybe he’s delivering a package… but what if he isn’t!

Maybe that person you saw did have a legitimate reason for walking around the perimeter of your neighbor’s house.

Example 2: You see a vehicle parked at an abandoned home for several days. You know no one lives in that home, but the vehicle is at or in close vicinity of the home.

Example 3: You see smoke billowing from a home (not from the chimney) and the family is or isn’t home…

You may or may not know your neighbors, and this isn’t family or any friend you recognize, so you ask yourself “maybe I should call public safety?” Then you think “no, they’ll think I’m a nuisance, crying wolf ”.

YOU SEE/HEAR/SMELL SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING. Make the call each and every time something arouses your suspicion. Words to live by: If it looks or sounds suspicious, it probably is…

US Food Show Comes to the Top! On March 3rd the Top of the World Hosted the U.S. Foods mini “Americana” SCOOP food show. The show was designed to show food service owners and chefs some of the new items to hit the market from all over the country, and to help show some unique and creative ways that they can be utilized in many areas of the menu.

U.S. Foods invited the members of Saw Creek to attend as well as many local businesses such as Sarah Street Grille, Walpauck Inn, Cinder Inn, and many others including some from Pittston, Scranton, and Allentown.

Skiing and Pinnacle Chill & Grille – Best Season Yet!

By Belinda Basnight – Communications I had the pleasure of speaking with Pinnacle Chill & Grille’s first customer – J. Mark Mutter, a 12 year member of Saw Creek Estates and repeat visitor of the SCE Ski Hill. Mark makes it a priority to take advantage of this great amenity Saw Creek has to offer every year and all season long.

As the Pinnacle’s first customer, Mark was accompanied by friends and family including his brother- in-law, Jay and sister, Janet. The group found out about Pinnacle after seeing the promotions for it via email and on FaceBook.

The want to see it and eat there was a must do. Mutter stated: “There was finally an eatery accommodating skiers wanting to take a break (in ski gear), eat, relax, and return to the slopes.”

Mark and his family understood the reasons for not wearing ski gear in the main part of the restaurant, but after relaxing and having a nice warm meal and a beverage, one often wanted to return to the slopes… He said: “With Pinnacle there – we could do just that.”

COMMITTEES Women’s Club News The Saw Creek Women’s Club has had an active and fun-filled fall! First, we presented the Dolores A. Danielson Memorial Scholarship award to Christopher Isolda of East Stroudsburg High School-North. We also made donations in support of local charities that are dear to us. Closer to home, in Saw Creek, we participated in the always fun and scary Halloween Trunk or Treat.

It’s not all outreach in and around our community, though. We have experienced some truly enjoyable events of our own! In September, we travelled to Sorrenti’s Cherry Valley Vineyard where we had a tour, wine tasting, and were instructed in making our own pizza. October, being “apple season,” brought us to our very own Top of the World Restaurant for a private event where the new Manager, George Gerhart, and Chef Jeremy Greene showed us how to make apple strudel. The homemade sangria and appetizers kept us occupied while our creations baked.

Dumpling making lessons and in March we took part in a full day of activities, including an Irish Murder Mystery, at Erhardt’s on Lake Wallenpaupack…Lots of laughs as well as great food!

The Saw Creek Women’s Club is sponsoring a fantastic evening of Motown featuring the great Lady A and Destiny on Saturday June 27, 2015, at Top of The World Restaurant. Save the date! This is a pre-ticketed event including a soul food buffet dinner, one free drink, and great entertainment.

Put on your dancing shoes as this will be a night to remember. More details to follow.

January took us to the Downs at East Stroudsburg for a little off-track betting on the horses and enjoying a nice lunch. In February we were back to the Top of the World Restaurant for International

Beautification Committee News Phil Cozzi-Chairperson After a rather difficult and harsh winter season, we are looking forward to this spring and the many projects we wish to get under way. The end of last season saw the completion of the walking path going from our Member Services Office to the parking lot at the VIP. Special thanks are in order to John Siegel and his staff for working during deplorable conditions in order to complete the paved walkway. The last phase of that project will take place this spring with the addition of new cedar post fencing along Decker Road at that site.

As plant material becomes available at our local garden centers, we will see the completion of the landscaping plan at the Member Services Office, playground, and VIP building.

This current year’s projects also include adding new plant material to several planting beds that were refurbished last year. The first planting bed that was completed last year was at the Smithfield Bridge. Next in order will be the planting bed at the Millpond Complex on Lancaster Dr. and then the planting bed at the Top of the World on the right just as you approach the indoor tennis courts.

In addition, flowering trees will be planted at the expansive area in front of the indoor tennis courts and Fitness Center.

Plans are also in the works to hire an outside company to manage and maintain the quality of the water in the VIP Pond, keeping it free from algae and other plant growth that would jeopardize the ecosystem in that location. Finally, the fall

of this year will bring the planting of daffodils at the Member Services Office area and at the island on Decker Road across from the mailboxes. The Beautification Committee will be looking for volunteers to help with the planting process at this time. It should also be mentioned that last fall saw the completion of natural screening down at the old stables area on Decker Road. Norway spruce trees were planted on a raised berm to screen the maintenance storage area at that site. This type of screening was selected in order to keep that area similar to its natural surroundings. It will take at least three years for these trees to really begin filling in that area.

On a final note, it was unfortunate that Mother Nature made it so difficult to remove our winter and holiday decorations in a timely manner. For

those residents who voiced their concern that the decorations still had not been removed, may I remind you that members of the Beautification Committee are VOLUNTEERS who work very hard at what they do. We would more than welcome some new volunteers who could assist in the removal of our holiday décor. If you would be interested in helping in this capacity, kindly ask to have your name and phone number placed in the Beautification Committee’s mailbox at the Member Services Office.

We also welcome homeowners and those interested in becoming members of our committee to attend meetings on the 2nd Thursday of every month at 4:00 PM in the Mountain Room, Top of the World Complex.

Saw Creek Men’s Club

Members attended a presentation of Scrooge on December 13th at the Shawnee Playhouse and dinner was at the Gem and Keystone. Our Beef & Beer on January 17th was well attended. Our club again donated $250 to SCECA recreation to help fund free ski lessons for our homeowner’s children.

As most of you know our club raises money annually to offer a number of $1,000 scholarships to our resident’s children who are seniors at East Stroudsburg North planning to attend college.

Our members will again be collecting at the gates on Friday, May 15th and Saturday, May 16th. Please be generous.

Club members have been bowling on Tuesday mornings and before you know it we will be playing golf on Tuesday and Friday at Fernwood.

Our club meets the first Thursday of every month at 6 PM in the Mountain Room, followed by light food and beverages at the TOW. Why not show up at one of these meetings to check us out.

Hi Everyone,

After a number of setbacks with the Woodbridge Drive East Bridge the contractor was able to complete the Abutment and Wing Walls repairs. When the final inspection was done a number of issues were identified by the Engineer but were quickly fixed by the Contractor. Seeding of the banks will be done in the spring. We were able to reopen the bridge to traffic on December thirty-first.

The first project that we will be working on in 2015 will be the renovations of the two remaining restrooms at the TOW. The Committee is in the process of reviewing what materials will be needed to do a complete renovation.

Our 2015 Road and Storm Water Repair Project will be combined with any road damage that was done by PPL during their upgrades to the power lines. As soon as the weather breaks the committee, with the assistance of management will identify which roads need the most attention. PPL has agreed to pay all costs that are associated with any road damage they may have caused.

This has been another record winter for the area and this committee would like to thank the Maintenance Department for their long hours of road plowing and salting of the roads in the Community.

The Committee is looking forward to a nice warm summer that we can enjoy all the amenities this Community has to offer.

I would like to say that winter is behind us, but as I sit and think about what I would like to tell you of our accomplishments, there still is NO SUN! I know it is there somewhere because it does come out to tease us every so often, but hopefully SOON, we will be complaining about the heat.

As, the Beatles said "Let it be".

• We do have a NO SMOKING Rule in place, but an update was necessary. This Ruling will now read, Smoking is defined as including all tobacco products and/or nicotine delivery devices, such as ecigarettes, hookahs etc. Our amenities will be smoke/vapor free and as before, areas have been provided for Smokers in our Community.

Tier 3 Offense I would like to STRESS that you as a homeowner/ renters can ask our Members Service office any questions that will assist you in making the RIGHT decisions when it comes to your property.

They are there to help us and they are happy to do so.

I would also like to bring up the NEED for Volunteers. I have heard many reasons why individuals cannot join and some of them seem to be valid, but Committees are run in a Democratic way, we vote on when we meet, what time and who will be Chairperson, this is done or can be done on a yearly basis. This is your community, have a say in what goes on.

All are welcomed to our meetings, which are held on the third Tuesday of each month in The Mountain Room (at the TOP) at 4:00PM.

Safety Tips

By Suzanne Mark We are rapidly approaching the busy summer travel season, folks will soon be on the road and in the air for vacations and long weekends. Here are a few

things to think about for safety sake. If you plan to leave a car in long term parking consider taking out your car registration and any documents that would indicate your home address. Thieves may break in for the electronics or airbags in the car, but also take a look in your glove compartment.

Your registration and insurance cards includes your name, address, and guess what? They know you are not home!!!

Might consider taking your garage door opener with you as well. Let’s not make it easy for them to invade your home.

Then there’s the GPS, did you leave that on the dash? Well, there you go! We’ve given them the directions too. Thieves don’t even need multiple days to do their dirty deeds. Parking at a concert or sports venue gives them a couple of hours to ransack your house before you get home. They may even be armed with a truck to empty the contents of your house. Knowing the length of time you probably will be away from home gives them a clue when you will get home.

Something to consider for your GPS is not using your exact address, instead use a nearby vacant lot, store or gas station, preferably not your neighbor’s address.

Treasurer’s Report February 2015 As of February 28, 2015, we have $6,383,991.00 in our cash/investment accounts, of which $3,403,985.00 is available for operating expenses and $2,980,006.00 is earmarked for Capital Reserves. We have collected $2,854,621.00 in current year dues and assessments which represents a collection rate of 66%. We are ahead of our collection rate by 3.77% as compared to last year’s rate at this time.

We continue to look for ways to increase nondues revenue and to collect outstanding dues.

We continue to offer payment plans for those who cannot afford to pay their dues all at once.

We are utilizing the service of a collection agency to collect delinquent dues as we continue to look for other ways to improve our collection of delinquent dues. We also offered a one time “Amnesty Program” for those who are seriously delinquent, which some homeowners have taken advantage of.

Sweetheart Champions

Congratulations to 2015 Sweetheart Tennis Tournament Champions Ida Mathew and Brian Bates, and to finalists Flo Yee and Bill Montgomery.

2014 was a challenging year but I can report that the Board, Finance Committee and the Management worked together to control our expenses and end the year on a positive note.

All of our departments came in under budget, except for the Restaurant. Several factors contributed to that, including increased cost of goods and lack of management for part of the year. We hired a new manager who has made some major changes and we expect the restaurant to do much better this year.

ATTENTION SAW CREEK LANDLORDS! New Tenant/Renter Registration Policy adopted by the Board of Directors

VanDerVliet, Director of Member Services After consultation with management, local government officials and association members, SCE Board of Directors has adopted certain change to Saw Creek Estate’s Rental Policies. The changes affect all short-term and long-term rental properties and will become effective as of May 15th, 2015.

The revisions to the Rental Policy are intended to address concerns about compliance with state and local laws, added resources often required to support short term rentals, the potential unjust enrichment of those members not-ingood-standing and adding a crime free/drug free addendum to all leases.

Member Services will be sending an information packet to all currently known landlords which includes complete information on the policy changes. Full details will also be made available on our website at www.sawcreek.org. We want members to be prepared for the upcoming changes and ask that you contact Member Services if you have any questions.

Summary of Rental Policy Changes

Also last year, with the recommendation of our Finance Committee, we made a change in our investment manager and diversified our portfolio to include some alternative investments. This has resulted in a significant increase in yield on our investments.

Only Members in good standing will be eligible to rent out their properties. Member’s not-in-goodstanding found to be renting out their homes may be subject to a citation and fine of $250.00.

Effective September 1, 2015, all properties that have rentals will be charged an annual fee of $150.

In addition to the annual fee, there will be a $25 charge for each short-term rental (30-days or less). All tenants must be registered with the Member Services Office. Failure to register may subject the landlord to a citation and fine of $150.00 per occurrence.

The economic uncertainties of the past few years seem to be improving as we have seen some improvements in the real estate market around the area. We have seen an increase in home sales in Saw Creek and we are looking at several options to showcase Saw Creek to potential buyers.

We have weathered the economic downturn much better than many other communities in the area.

We have not increased our dues or only had a very minimum increase in the last 4 years even though we have had double digit increase in costs in some areas. We are a vibrant and financially stable community with many amenities and lot of activities for homeowners and residents of all ages.

Long term rentals (31 days or more) will be required to provide the Member Services Office with a copy of the fully executed lease which must includes a new crime free/drug free lease addendum. This applies to all new leases executed on or after September 1, 2015 and to all renewals of established leases thereafter.

Short-term rentals of 30-days or less are required by law to collect a Hotel Occupancy Tax. Proof of compliance for all short term rental properties must be provided to Member Services in the form of a valid Hotel Occupancy Tax Certificate. Please contact the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue or visit their website for complete details on the applicable taxes and fees.

Only members in-good-standing may obtain guest amenity passes for their tenants, subject to any pricing and quantity limitations in effect at the time of purchase.

When I first moved into Saw Creek, gardening was the last thing on my mind. Two years in, the itch to cultivate and get dirty began to haunt me again. I come from a long line of growers.

My love for playing in the dirt has been handed down through the generations. My memories of visiting my great grandfather who would send me home with armfuls of tulips and working with my grandmother in the garden she grew at our home are some of my best.

There is a running joke that rocks grow best in our area of the poconos. I beg to differ, but yet conceed to needing adaptations sometimes to easily create a garden here. Anyone who has dug a hole here knows that you will hit a few rocks, and big ones at that.

Due to the forested nature of our community, there can be a challenge finding a full sun space. If you are lucky enough to have a sunny spot, it can be done! Be sure to consult Saw Creek’s guidlines to stay in compliance with the rules, and a quick check with Nick Hutta can also be helpful.

Constructing a raised bed for your plants can overcome the need for digging amongst the rocks.

The beds can be placed right over existing mowed grass and weeds as long as it is lined properly. Using a weed inhibiting liner or layers of newspaper will

usually suffice. Be sure to create you boxes with untreated lumber so not to poison your soil. You will of course need a properly applied for fence to keep four legged critters in check. For those with a sun filled deck, container planting can satisfy the urge to garden. Tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, herbs and more can all be grown in planters.

You cannot get any more organic than raising your own vegtables. You control the amount and type of pesticides used. There are many good organic choices of pest control out there that do a wonderful job. It is also a great money saver as the organic produce in stores can carry a higher price tag.

Personally, I have had sucesses and failures in gardening at my home in saw creek. Strawberries, peppers, squash and herbs have all been quite the success. My strawberries have done so well that I give plants out yearly to my friends. I found the by hand polination of corn to be rather tedious, for the amount of corn harvested from such a small plot. My tomatoes for years were exceptional until two years ago when my crops became over-ridden with blight. Watermelon needs a much longer growing season than can be given in our area of the Poconos from my experience. Go forth and grow Saw Creek Friends!
