Now that summer is behind us, we look forward to the fall season. Normally we look back on all of the positive things that happened over the summer, make our notes, and move on. There were many positive aspects about the summer season. The amount of rain was surely not one of them. I do not remember a season where we had so much rain. Most of which happened right after the annual meeting and didn’t seem to stop until the high school kids went back to school. Of course then the weather turned to 90 degrees. We were able to open the pool from 3:30 to 7pm during that heat wave as most of our local staff is still in high school. Let’s hope Mother Nature has all of the moisture out of her system before winter!

to have a pool party to kick off Labor Day weekend. It usually rains. So it was decided a few years ago to try an indoor carnival game type of event. Well there were 240+ members signed up to attend this year. That is AWESOME!! To pull off an event of this size takes a lot of time and effort from a lot of people. All staff (admin, pool, recreation, food and beverage) along with a host of members from the community pulled together to make this happen. The secret is out. We have hired a new Recreation Director. Nick Gallagher was appointed to this position on August 22nd. Some of you may know Nick as he was the assistant pool manager under Jen Pero this past summer. Together they managed our swim team of over 65 kids. Looking ahead to the fall season, Nick has his eyes set on developing a wide range

From Your Board of Directors BY WAYNE MEYERS

Happy October! Fall is in the air. Halloween is close, with Thanksgiving and Christmas just around the corner. The air is charged with excitement and anticipation. We won’t talk about that four-letter word that starts with “s” here. Instead, let’s speak about a six-letter word that begins with “a”: apathy. Pocono Farms Country Club is a wonderful, amenityrich community. I prefer not having gates blocking the roads, but sometimes I wonder if this encourages people to sometimes forget we do live in a community. To be clear, my personal feelings are no matter where you live, you should always try to give something back, whether that is a residential community such as ours, and/or the larger community, such as the township, or an organization that services your county or region. It could be your religious institution. But try to volunteer as much time as you can carve out from work, family, etc. and do something. Even an hour a month helping out at a local food bank would make a huge difference to many people. Focusing on Pocono Farms and the residential amenity community model, keep in mind we all bought homes within this community, not outside it. So, even if you don’t use the pool, eat at the restaurant, or play tennis or pickleball, you remain as much a part of things as someone else who does. The amenities become an extension of your home in terms of responsibility, and having the amenities raises our property values above a home that is outside our community (as presented during our last annual meeting and shared online).

interior becomes damaged. If an amenity requires work, such as fixing a hole in the pool floor, we must use the community account, funded by our dues, to repair the leak as soon as possible. This isn’t an option, as it may be with a homeowner who doesn’t care, but a duty and requirement of our management team to oversee, and the elected Board of Directors to govern. In turn, we maintain a beautiful community for our families, our children, and our guests to enjoy, and our property values rise. Returning to my opening point, there is also a less-enforced personal responsibility involved, one that cannot be measured by property values, but is just as important. Besides the money collected in dues, we need to offer time, as part of the same logic set. Fortunately, the time donation does not need to be excessive. It can be a few hours a month, or even a few hours a year, if nothing else is possible. And I get it— for some of us, volunteering regularly just isn’t doable.

lives here, were decided on by this sliver of representation. Please try to attend next July’s meeting. Your community relies on your involvement. The Board takes your comments seriously, and we do our best to accommodate suggestions or rectify issues brought to our attention. Note, you don’t need to wait for the annual meeting to do this. Feel free to speak up at member comments at the beginning of any monthly Board meeting, usually held on Fridays starting at 7pm. If you have some free time on a monthly basis, please try to join a committee. If you aren’t sure what that requires, stop by the office and ask. We’ve consolidated a few committees together to try and fill them with fewer people, and hope this helps. Committees play a vital role in our community, but I won’t digress in this article any further, other than to ask you to look into it if you can. Also note, you don’t have to be a committee member to attend a meeting. Stop by and listen in, ask questions, and see firsthand if perhaps you’d like to join

yourself, before you make any long-term commitments. If you’d like to do more for your community, but have reservations, or questions, please let us know. The Board would love to figure out how to encourage more members to participate, and perhaps your reason for hesitating is something other people share. For those of you who do volunteer on committees,

who attend the annual meetings, and join in on the many excellent events we offer, let me say on behalf of the Board, “THANK YOU!” Know how much you are appreciated. Everyone, have a wonderful autumn in our beautiful community. There is so much to enjoy and appreciate here and in the surrounding Poconos, even when that “s” word begins to fall.

For me, I volunteer (and was elected) to help out on the Board of Directors. Over the years I’ve served on the Board, occasionally community members have come to us and asked how they, too, can be on the Board, and we explain the process: 3 directors off and 3 directors on every year. Then they asked, “how much does it pay?” Well, we explain, it pays nothing. Unfortunately, I do not see their names on the ballots for the next election cycle.

At the last annual meeting, we barely made a quorum, which means we only had people from a little over a hundred households attend. If we didn’t reach a quorum, we could not conduct business such as voting on community issues. This is a real problem, What does this mean? Well, folks. Once a year, the date as you are undoubtedly aware, announced almost a year in a portion of our dues goes advance, your community toward subsidizing these needs a few hours of your amenities, maintaining them time, probably no more than and keeping them operational two. That’s two hours a year. and productive. Are you also Let that sink in. aware, it isn’t an obscure community rule to do so, but Two hours a year, always on the fiscal responsibility we all a Saturday morning. Why don’t we have a thousand agreed to when purchasing households represented? Even a home within a residential five-hundred? Only a tiny community? If the roof on our home needs replacement, fraction of our community made it, and whatever voting we will replace it, otherwise issues were presented, things the home falls into disrepair, that impact everyone who the ceiling leaks, and the WEAT H ERVA NE

Crime Watch Activity Report BY RUSS KELLY

October starts the real change of seasons here in the Poconos. People notice the colors we are surrounded with and wonder how soon they can put away the lawn mower and start tuning up the snow blower. The children are looking forward to Halloween and adults are wondering when to buy new snow tires or when to get the tires in their sheds mounted. Snow seems to find its way around Halloween here in Pocono Farms. The crime watch drivers will stop reporting high grass but will be looking at things that may be blocking the cul-de-sac such as basketball nets, or cars parked on the side of the road. Of course, they will always report garbage cans at the side of the road and trash left lying about a property. One concern during this time of year should be the possibility of fire, due to the dryness and the piles of falling leaves. Pocono Farms has a yearlong restriction on burning, and the township will post burning restrictions when there are dry periods. Recently a resident was told by a neighbor that burning was against the rules in Farms. He said he did not care, but stopped burning when he was told the smoke was filling the neighbor’s house. Rules against burning I am sure were put in place by people realizing in a wooded area, fire can easily get out of hand. We all should remember, rules of our community were put forth by its residents, not a remote council, uninformed of the community’s wants or needs. With the combining of the Architectural and Building committee, the drivers will be asked to be more vigilant in reporting violations of community rules. All drivers are not happy about reporting on fellow residents, but do realize keeping properties in compliance benefits the entire community. Soon the call of the sun will begin the yearly migration of our snowbird drivers. So, a few more open slots occur in the patrol schedule. Maybe this is the year you give it a try. If you are interested, call the office or Russ Kelly at 570-894-4034.

idea@poconofarms.com Our community needs a means by which the membership can freely and easily communicate with the Board of Directors. The Board has created an email address that residents may use to submit comments, questions, and suggestions. Valid emails, must include the full name and Pocono Farms address of the sender. Which will then be forwarded to a current board member. Responses to emails will be sent directly to the sender and periodically published in the Weathervane or included in regular email blasts. Publication of submitted questions and answers will help you and your fellow community members stay current with what is happening within the community. Two-way communication is vital to a healthy and inclusive community. We hope you find that this is a helpful means to stay in touch with your board of directors.

idea@poconofarms.com Public Safety BY A. FURMAN, DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC SAFETY PFCCA

Hello everyone. October, the change of the season and all of the things that fall brings to us here in the Poconos. The changing colors (more tourists), the falling leaves

(my poor back from raking), Halloween (my ever expanding waistline), the cooler weather (more heating costs). I think I’m starting to sound like my Grandfather, lol.

Seriously though there are things we should do. Give your lawns their last few mows to prepare them for winter. Those “things” in the front of your yards, the swales, please keep them clear from leaves and limbs. These things will lead to the clogging of your drainage pipes and that will result in a damming affect. For those who snowbird, remember to take the steps for your departure that makes it seem you have never left. Your newspaper delivery, your mail, your mowing or shoveling if needed ( let’s hope not) . All of the things you would normally do if you were home. I will have to try to behave for Halloween this year because if I don’t my costume next year will be Jabba the Hut. As always if you have questions or concerns feel free to call or stop by, my door is always open.

Major Holidays that will affect your collection days are: New Years Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, and Christmas. When those holidays fall on a Monday or Tuesday, garbage collection will shift by one day. ANIMALS: Dogs must be leashed or on owner’s property at all times. Wildlife, such as deer and black bear, are common at Pocono Farms. We ask that you NOT FEED any wild animals. All articles, announcements, classified ads, etc. must be submitted to the Newsletter Coordinator on or before the 1st of each month for publication in the next issue of The Weathervane. Helloooo FALL!!! The beautiful weather is upon us. The trees are turning their bright reds, oranges and yellows. The air is beginning to get crisp and our bodies begin adapting to the colder weather. Crockpots are dug out from their tucked away spots. Tea and coffee becomes a morning staple to warm our bodies and maybe rev our inner engines. Comfort food and soup recipe ingredients are scratched on our grocery lists. The wonderful smells fill our kitchens and our bellies. We begin to get comfortable ourselves in our sweatshirts and yoga pants. Wrapping ourselves in big blankets and hanging out on the couch watching movies or maybe reading a good book. Our love of fitness begins to dwindle and our motivation goes down the drain. I know all too well how this cycle goes as I have lived it most of my life. Falling off that proverbial wagon and not paying attention to what I’m eating and my lack of exercise until it’s time to put on those cute shorts and t-shirts and they just don’t fit. To avoid the frustration I encourage you to stay active, stay hydrated and watch what you eat. There are so many fun ways to clean up your eating and still enjoy those comfort foods. Coffee and tea can dehydrate us if we drink too much so I encourage you to be sure that you drink your water, and if you are working out, you need to replace your electrolytes just like you do in the heat of summer. Joining the fitness center is an easy way the stay active during the fall and winter months. We are offering a couple of new fall and winter classes to keep you motivated and change things up a bit and I am putting together a healthy eating recipe book to share with you as well. Stop in today and join us for a fun filled fall season at the fitness center. As always I thank you for your support and appreciate all your kind words.

If you step outside you can just about smell it. The smell of the fall, and it’s just about here. This season has surely been a wet one. We can’t control Mother Nation but we can try to make the best of it. Fall golf is just around the corner. This is my favorite time to play. Leaves will start changing and the course plays at its best. The weather stops stressing the golf course, greens become a bit firmer, and putts roll faster. There is plenty more to this golf season. Do yourself a favor and get out and play. Just because the golf season is nearing its end here in the Northeast doesn’t mean you should stop learning. Get out and start working on the game. Summer temperatures normally effect practice sessions. No one likes to hit golf balls when the sun is beating down on you and the humidity is at its worse. Make a plan to work on the game at least 2 days a week. When I say work on your game it doesn’t necessarily mean hitting golf balls at the driving range. Playing out on the course also is a form of practicing. I personally prefer playing over beating balls at a range. There are two types of practice players. Those like VJ Singh who hit about 1000 balls a day and those like Arnold Palmer who just enjoyed playing the game. Whichever one you are, take advantage of fall golf and get out and play. A few days ago we had the Play for Pink here at Pocono Farms Country Club. We were able to raise over $2,000.00 for the cause. Thank you everyone who came out to play. Also I want to thank those who donated through tee, hole, and cart sponsorships, as well as other donations. Every little bit goes a long way. I am looking forward to seeing you out on the golf course. Please stop on by the Pro Shop if you have never been. We have a lot to offer here and would love to have the opportunity to share our passion of golf with each and every one of you. See you all soon! Your PGA Head Golf Professional and friend, Kyle Monahan
