Greetings friends and neighbors! I’m thrilled to start my tenth year on the Pocono Farms Board of Directors. Yes, I’ve spent almost a decade donating my time and energies for my community. Many things have happened over the eighteen years since I moved to the Farms. I’ve raised three kids, and added on two more. I’ve been divorced and remarried. I founded and ended a non-profit corporation. I’ve written and published a novel.
Host Your Event in Your Community’s Picturesque Lakeside Banquet Facility
Volunteering is an important activity to undertake. If you have children, it sets a great example to demonstrate how giving can be more rewarding than receiving. It shows them you care about something, and that it’s okay to be passionate about something. It shows them that money isn’t the most important thing in life. It shows them how they too can make a difference in the lives of others just by reaching out and offering to help. Community, values, and a strong work ethic all send our kids a powerful message about what really matters in life.
members expires, opening three seats that need to be filled. I can say from personal experience that being a Board member is very rewarding, because the oversight and guidance we provide to management directly correlates to the community we live and interact in.
If you’re looking for something more applicable to a specific area of our community, then volunteering for a committee might be the perfect fit. Committees play a valuable role in digging into specific tasks or situations, formulating viable With seating for 20 to 120 people solutions, and proposing recommendations to the Board based upon those efforts. Are you an avid pool user, and want your opinions and ideas to reach the ears of someone other than your spouse? Join the Pool Committee. In the coming months, expect to hear more about what each committee typically focuses upon, the estimated time commitments, and other relevant information to help you understand which committee might best match your interests. We’d love to see new faces and hear new ideas, so if you’re willing to share, there is a place for you to share them and people who want to hear them. Now is the time of year our committees are forming and beginning their initiatives, so it’s a great time to become involved. And if by some chance none of them pique your interest, keep your eyes open for an ad-hoc committee to be formed, to help the Board with a special need the other committees do not address. Some general committee information: they usually meet once a month, elect their own officers (President, Vice President, and Secretary), provide minutes of each meeting to the Board (which are also published on the Pocono Farms website), and provide an invaluable service to the community. One or more committee members may be asked to attend a Board meeting to present their recommendation(s) in person. If you’d like more information, don’t hesitate to contact our friendly office staff and find out everything you need to know. Whether or not you choose to volunteer here at the Farms or for some other worthy opportunity, please make an effort to do so today. I can’t tell you in strong enough words how valuable the time you invest is, whether it’s toward your future, or someone else’s. Trust me when I say there are decisions I’ve made in my life that I look back upon and wish I could change, but volunteering is not one of them. In fact, those are among the most cherished memories of all.

Notes from the Manager BY DAVE TIMKO
The end of summer brings about a little level of sadness. As we start closing down the summer amenities, we realize that we are two-thirds of the way through the year. The level of outside activity dwindles and most of us start to prepare for the upcoming colder months, stocking up on wood pellets and firewood, burning off those electric heaters, and digging out those winter jackets. But there are also a few reasons to be optimistic. As we always say, just because the calendar says fall or winter, does not mean that there is nothing going on. Our recreation and food and beverage staff continue to provide you and your family the opportunity to attend one of many different types of functions/activities held either in the community room or in the banquet room. In addition, although the hours are limited early in the week, the Grill Room and Pub are typically open Thursday through Sunday in the offseason for some great food and spirits and the opportunity to socialize with other members of the community.
After summer, the Board and Management, along with some committee input, start to build the budgets for the upcoming year. This includes the operational budget, and the reserve and capital budgets. This is another reason to be optimistic as we budget for new things we want to try, or improve on the good things we are already doing. Our fundamental goal is to build value in what we do, build relationships between members, and provide our members a variety of programs that promote a sense of community. This we believe builds value in the community which we manage on your behalf. When we see members and their families out on the property enjoying themselves and hear the laughter in their voices, this gives us a sense of accomplishment. So get on out there and enjoy some of what is offered to you. If you have a suggestion for an event or activity that you would like to see, let us know. You can always email it to : idea@ poconofarms.com

Crime Watch Activity Report
Public Safety
BY RUSS KELLY
BY A. FURMAN DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC SAFETY PFCCA
Hello everyone, I hope your summer went well. This month we will revisit a couple of topics. I am only revisiting these because they happened to me this past month despite the different articles I wrote. I know some of you think of me as the “Ogre” who lives under the bridge at #4 green, but these are the rules I must enforce. No pets at the amenities. The only exception to this is a service animal. Service, not emotional support. This includes all amenities; lake, playground, beach, tennis etc. I like pets, I really do, but short of you bringing a Unicorn or a winged Pegasus for me to ride on, I will have to ask you to leave them home. Next is the golf course. Other than employees working or golfers golfing, no one else should be on the course when it is open. There is no time clock; no steam whistle that blows that lets people know when the course is open or closed. The basic rule of thumb is “when it’s light out in the morning it opens and when it’s dark at night it closes”. Key word here is dark. I have had bicycles, kids jogging, kids leaving the pool and cutting across #18 “just because,” people walking dogs, couples walking, moms with strollers and toddlers in tow out there with an hour or two left to play. It would break my heart to hit a toddler with one of my errant shots. Finally fishing. You must have a valid fishing license with a trout stamp; you are supposed to put any bass you catch back. Catch and release only for bass and you must have your amenities badge with you (actually for all amenities). Under no circumstance are you allowed to fish from the golf course. Regardless if the course is open or closed or if you see golfers on it or not. Not from the course. That is it I suppose.
October means a few things to the crime watch volunteers. While a few are tuning up their cars, getting ready for the coming trip to the sunshine states, others are starting to talk about the annual Halloween activity and wonder if the mischief night will be as quiet as the past few years. We will be riding around that night, just in case the night returns to the nights of old.
be back in the fall to pick up the time that will be lost to the snowbirds’ flight. There is still plenty of room for more volunteers. Give Russ Kelly a call at 570-894-4034, or call the office if you would like to get started. Just as the finance companies say, we can make an easy plan for you.
The Crime Watch Committee should be set with some new members that will bring new ideas to the group. Concerns of some drivers this past spring suggested ways to help the community contend with the litter problem we face every year. Coordination between the Farms and the township concerning litter on the township roads was established so each knew their responsibility in the removal of the dumped items. The administration suggested an “Adopt a Spot” program. Hopefully, this will take hold. If you were unaware of the program but would like to participate, contact the Administration Office or Linda Penett for details. It won’t be too long before we see hunters entering the game lands. I am sure there are residents of the Farms that will be getting ready for the season to begin. Within our by-laws is the restriction of shooting firearms within the community. Even if your property adjoins the game lands, you must be out of the community proper to fire. During the month of August, fourteen drivers patrolled for ninety hours. We hope three drivers who have been unable to patrol this summer will
I will now crawl back under my bridge, I have Shrek coming over for dinner. But should you have questions or concerns my door is always open. Contact me at (570)-894-4435 ex. 105 or email afurman@poconofarms.com.
GET INVOLVED Make a difference in your community by joining a Committee - it takes, on average, one hour per month Choose from one of the ten standing committees or one of the two Ad Hoc committees Committee Applications are available in the Administration Office or on the Pocono Farms website under “documents” Fill out your application and submit it the Administration Office

A Horse With No Farm
The First Fifteen Years of PFCCA
IN THE FARMS
BY: EMILY DENNY
I’ve never seen a horse in Pocono Farms, save the one in the country club’s emblem. This particular horse greets me on Route 611, and follows me around the community in the form of golf polos, menus, towels, baseball caps. My grandfather, Bob Denny -- the longest residing member of the country club -- tells me it’s because Pat Faitz -- along with Dr. John McGregor, founded the community -- was a horse lover. Her quarter horse farm, on the other side of route 196 (the future home of Pocono Farms East), inspired the name of the community that would grow from 40 homes to over 1,400 homes nestled in “the gem of the Poconos”. In the late 1960’s, the Poconos was known as the “honeymoon capital” of America. Places like Pocono Manor and Mt. Airy Lodge hung over the quiet town of Mt. Pocono, which only consisted of a drugstore, a cinema, and a hardware store. When Pocono Farms was founded by Recradell Corporation there was not much more to speak of: a community of just a few homes, free tennis and basketball courts, and only 5 paved roads. Between the years 1966 and 1970 a clubhouse, new tennis courts, a swimming pool, and a nine hole golf course were constructed. Unlike the more exclusive country clubs in the area, Pocono Farms Country Club membership was open to any resident who could pay the fees.
PFCCA OFFICE HOURS Monday - Saturday 8:30am - 12:30pm & 1:00pm - 4:30pm ID Badge Picture Hours: 8:30am - 12:00pm & 1:00pm - 4:00pm
After the golf course opened in 1970, properties along the front nine were put up for sale. An advertisement in The New York Times invited prospective buyers to “the gem of the Poconos”. This brought my grandparents, along with many others to lay roots in a small mountain community. As the populace expanded, so too did the facilities and amenities. Friday night drinks and Saturday night dinners would become a full food and drink menu. Dress codes would relax. Nine would become eighteen. “The Mountain Echo” would become The Weathervane. The club’s formative years in the 1960’s and 1970’s, are a largely untold story. We’ll be telling the story of the first fifteen years across six articles. Each article will focus on a different aspect of life at Pocono Farms. From golf, to swimming, to winter sports, and more, check each Weathervane for a history lesson, brought to you by one of Pocono Farms’ longest living residents, Bob Denny.

Fun With Fitness
THIRSTY THURSDAYS
BY KRISSIE AYLWARD, PFCCA FITNESS DIRECTOR A D AY O F F I R S T S
September 10th, 2017 was an absolutely AMAZING day!!! It happened to be the First Annual PFCCA 5K Fun Run/Walk. The 5K was my first big event here at Pocono Farms and my first opportunity to work directly with Joe and Katrina. The 5K was quite an undertaking and we learned a lot and can’t wait to do it all over again next year.
6:00—8:00pm
BEER OF THE MONTH: Samual Adams Octoberfest Pumpkin Pie Martini
As we registered both walkers and runners the sun broke through the clouds and wind began to die down. The girls from the Tri Sigma Sorority at ESU were a HUGE help with set up and registration as well as making us laugh and cheering the participants on.
OCTOBER 5th BBQ Chicken $10.95
We watched Alex and Markus Henning, ages 11 and 10, run their first 5K. Alex placed second with a time of 29 minutes 44 seconds, grabbing himself a medal for Top Male Runner in his age group. Markus came in 7th with a time of 39 minutes 5 seconds, grabbing himself a medal for the Youngest Runner. Both boys are near and dear to my heart and watching them run was pure joy.
OCTOBER 12th Italian Night $10.95
Ms. Olivia Green, age 12, ran beside her grandmother, Mrs. Jeanne Seebacher both earning themselves medals. Olivia won Overall Female Runner with a time of 30 minutes 26 seconds. Mrs. Seebacher won Top Female Runner in her age group, with a time of 31 minutes 14 seconds. Olivia beat her previous run time along with pulling past her grandmother in the last mile. The smiles on their faces were priceless.
With papperdale noodles, fresh green beans, mixed green salad and fresh baked bread.
Meat and cheese lasagna, vegetable lasagna, Caesar salad and cheesy toasted garlic bread.
Ms. Ingrid Birthwright earned herself a medal for Top Female Runner in her age group with a time of 41 minutes 7 seconds. She was glowing with excitement after the race and I even got to take her picture!!!
OCTOBER 19th German Night $12.95
Sliced sauerbraten, buttered spatzle, pickled cabbage, German potato salad, fresh baked pretzel bread.
OCTOBER 26th Spooktacular! $11.95
Monster meatballs, “GHOUL”ash (beef and root vegetables), Sausage mummies (homemade pigs in a blanket), The Great Pumpkin soup and other spooky treats to make the night complete.

Football Sunday
Join us in the glacier lake grill & pub
Lana Esposito ran beside Mike Schaefer earning herself a medal for Top Female Runner in her age group with a time of 35 minutes 50 seconds. The medal she should have earned was Top Female Motivator. As they came to the end of the race, she was pushing Mike to keep going and talking him thru the last 100 feet. That was absolutely INSPIRING and a true show of team work. Scott and Abby Denny both earned themselves medals for Overall Male and Female Walker, finishing with times of 48 minutes 43 seconds and 48 minutes and 42 seconds. Abby is our newest instructor and has really earned herself a following here, which is AWESOME!! She will continue teaching yoga thru the end of the year so be sure to come and check it out.
Fall/Winter Fitness Class Schedule
Kelly Smith-Risk and Bob Risk also earned themselves medals for Top Female and Male Walker in their age groups with times of 56 minutes 56 seconds and 58 minutes 4 seconds. The second of our husband and wife teams, cheering each other on until the finish. Kelly, just out of surgery, exuded such strength. Her commitment to her health and fitness is unshakeable.
MONDAY 9am-10am: Full Body Fusion (Krissie)
Ms. Linda Becht earned herself a medal for Top Female Walker in her age group with a time of 56 minutes 56 seconds. She is a regular to our fitness classes here and it was nice to see the camaraderie amongst the ladies she walked with, Peg Scott and Fran Kerrigan, as they crossed the finish line together.
12-6PM
Our Overall Male Runner, Mr. Kirt Joseph, finished his run in 18 minutes 20 seconds. As he crossed the finish line, I jokingly asked him what took him so long. Pointing to his ankle, he told us he was recovering from an Achilles tendon injury. This was his first race since the injury. Staying to cheer his fellow runners and walkers as they crossed the finish line was a true show of sportsmanship. No matter how many people participated or who came in first, what matters is, we had fun and we created memories that will last a lifetime. To all our sponsors, United Envelope, B. Cavanaugh Mechanical Co., Monadnock, KRI KleenUp Restoration and The Better Mind and Booty, we appreciate your help in funding this event. To those who made donations, The Milano Family, The LaScala Family, The Nevarez Family and The Penett Family, THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT.

A special thanks to the tennis community for hosting and donating their time to put on a tennis workshop for the children. Thank you, Bob Penett, Frank D’Amato, Ingrid Bryan, Margaret Petrakis, Bob Denny, Carl Hellwig, Steve Roche and Carol McDonnell. It was our second year and even more successful.
HIGH SCHOOL GOLF
Keep your eyes open for a holiday trip in the upcoming months. Once again I want to thank everyone for your continued help and support. If anyone has any suggestions or ideas for any recreational events or leagues please call or email me.
OC TOBER
If you hit your ball in the sand, make sure you use the rakes to smooth out the sand when you’re done. No one wants to hit their ball from an old foot print from the groups in front of them. Always be mindful when driving the cart to stay away from restricted areas.
Don’t forget to check out the many other events for the fall season in October. The pumpkin patch, Children’s Halloween party, Trunk or Treat are all events we are having this month. Our second Clean-Up Day is on Saturday, October 21st, please sign up in the Administration Office. Our bowling league is starting on October 3rd and will last through the end of the year.

First, make sure you leave the golf course like you found it, or better! If you made a divot in the fairway or rough, be sure to fill it with seed from the seed bottles on each cart
With the end of summer upon us, that means that school is back in session. For all of you Pocono Mountain West Golfers, good luck with the upcoming season. We are excited to see you succeed in your high school matches this season. A B I G T H A N K YO U !
I am sure everyone is seeing the results of the hard work the “Monday Morning Breakfast Club” has been making on our golf course. These members are donating their time, blood, sweat and tears to give our course a facelift and it is making a huge difference. We wanted to continue to say “Thank you” to all who have participated!
