As we enter into the fall and winter months at Pocono Farms, it is budget time. When the management team develops their budgets, historical data provides us with critical information as far as trends in both the revenue and expenses.

We analyze these trends in developing the operating budget for the upcoming year prior to submitting the budget to the Board of Directors and Finance Committee for their review and comment.

Each year, we also review any recurring contracts/services and shop for the best available price for that product or service.

Property insurance, equipment leases, and utility providers are just a few that we shop for on a routine basis.

On the revenue side, we constantly look at ways to generate additional revenue. Banquets, food and beverage, and golf generate substantial revenue for PFCCA, Inc. each year. We evaluate our products and services on a regular basis so that we ensure we stay competitive in those markets. We shop different vendors for the best available pricing on our food and beverage products so that we can continue to offer our members, and guests, the best in food and beverage, at an affordable price.

In closing, we will continue to do our due diligence in preparing, monitoring, and delivering a budget that is attainable and realistic. We will continue to challenge ourselves in providing our members the opportunity to get involved and participate in as many events and programs as they wish. That is the foundation of choosing to live in a community – being and getting involved.

I am writing this article on the last official day of summer if you are willing to consider what we had as summer. The weather was as gloomy as one would more expect to have in January or February. Certainly the rain eliminated much of our normal summer fun. Less pool, beach, and golf unless you were into clouds and rain.

The Scranton Times reported 10 1/2 inches of rain in August alone. Seven days of thunderstorms, eleven heavy rain days and seven light rain days. In spite of this, our events were relatively well attended. Many of the attendees were first timers. This is really great news. Hopefully the trend will continue.

There are a number of events and trips scheduled in the coming months. Be sure the Administrative Office has your email so you are aware of upcoming events. There is a dart league and bowling league during the winter months, all are welcome to participate.

On another subject, the Annual Meeting was well attended and a number of suggestions were made that the Board of Directors are reviewing to try to complete. They included items/ideas such as; floating docks in the lake, soccer nets, a splash pad, adult swim, ping pong tables in pool area, etc.

Crime Watch Activity Report

I hope we are looking back at October and are glad we didn’t get one of those late October snow storms. With the amount of rain we have had this year, I keep my fingers crossed that the unusually wet year has ended before the cold weather steps in.

The combined Crime WatchArchitectural and Building Committee met for the first time and began to define how the committee would work.

Crime Watch patrols have been reporting to the code officer for several years, so it should not be too hard to come up with a good working program. While drivers are aware what events should be turned in to the Public Safety officer and the local police, they are not always up to date with the changes that have been made, or regulations up dated, by the A & B Committee. Still, there are drivers that do not feel comfortable reporting anything but the most serious non-compliance with community rules. As our Code Compliance officer said at this meeting, fines are not issued because the Administration is looking to bring money into the organization. It is to make you aware that we are

seriously trying to maintain the quality that brought you here in the first place.

As with most months, we are not aware of any criminal activity in the community.

We continue to patrol in the belief that we are doing a small part in keeping this community relatively crime free. In September, the drivers spent 84 hours riding through the community, hoping to see nothing out of the ordinary, but ready to call if necessary. Just a reminder, if you would feel it necessary to call the police, but it isn’t a true emergency, call the nonemergency number 570-9929911. They have been very responsive when we found it necessary to call them.

So as usual, I ask if anyone would like to drive a few hours a month, give Russ Kelly a call at 570-894-4034, or contact the Office.

October and November are when many of our snowbirds hit the road for warmer surroundings. I know the veterans take care of security lighting, plowing driveways and letting the office know where to get in touch with you if it is necessary. So this is just a reminder for those of you doing this for the first time, make sure you leave the house looking lived in.

Nothing is easier to spot than a home with an unplowed driveway, or news papers piled on the deck.

Public Safety

November is here. I have finished all my Halloween treats and now I am making room for turkey! (My poor waistline) Hopefully is hasn’t happened yet, but rest assured it’s coming……%#&? Sorry I meant to say snow. So remember to prepare your car for winter.

This month I have been asked to revisit an article from the not too distant past. Those “things” in front of your yards and under your driveways, which are otherwise known as swales and drainpipes.

The office has been inundated with calls about the drainage (or lack thereof) in front of your homes because of all the rain we have had. It has been extremely wet this year, the wettest I can ever remember.

People want to know when we, aka Pocono Farms, are coming to clean out their swales and drainpipes. I will take time away from changing my name to Noah and building our Ark to go over this again. We, meaning the Farms, do not take care of individual homeowner’s properties. That is the home owner’s responsibility. We are responsible for the larger drains, the ones on or under the cul de sacs. The Township is responsible for the biggest drains, the ones that go under the township roads.

I hope this clears up any uncertainty. So back to Ark building I go.

But as always, should you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call or stop by. My door is always open.

Valid emails, must include the full name and Pocono Farms address of the sender. Which will then be forwarded to a current board member.

Publication of submitted questions and answers will help you and your fellow community members stay current with what is happening within the community. Fun With Fitness

THIRSTY THURSDAYS

It’s Turkey Trot time!!! Last year was our first annual turkey trot and we had a lot of fitness member participation. I am hoping that we have the same, if not better, participation this year. The Second Annual Turkey Trot will be run a bit different this year. Much like our marathon challenge at the beginning of the year, each participant will be given from Monday, Nov. 12th thru Friday, Nov. 30th to complete 13.1 miles using the cardio equipment, participating in classes, or a combination of both.

The only difference this year will be the addition of a monetary donation. I will have Turkey Trot shirts made for each participant and treat it like the PFCCA 5K. Our proceeds from the Turkey Trot will be added to the proceeds from the 5K Fun Run/Walk and donated in whole to Feeding Families Ministry.

Through the generosity of individuals, clubs and organizations, Feeding Families Ministry is able to serve approximately 400 families a month in Monroe, Wayne and Pike Counties. Our Second Annual 5K Fun Run/Walk will help to feed some of those families but I would like to increase our donation to $350 plus!!! Please help us it that mark and sign up for the Turkey Trot!!!

Signups will be held in the Fitness Center beginning Thursday, Nov. 1st and end Friday, Nov. 9th. The Second Annual Turkey Trot will begin Monday, Nov. 12th and run thru Friday, Nov. 30th.

By the time you read this article most of the beauty of fall will have passed and winter will soon be upon us. It is a time to reflect on the past golf season, the friendships forged, the good and bad shots, the scores that we will remember and those we can forget.

We’ve all had shots that never ended up at their intended target, but might of if it wasn’t for that pesky branch, tree limb, or tree trunk. Our golf course has aged and the trees and brush have grown larger and overtime encroached on the golf course making it more challenging and difficult to play.

As beautiful and majestic as they can be, trees can wreak havoc with playability and turfgrass quality. Golf courses in our area have spent many thousands of dollars removing trees and shrubs for that purpose. Most courses, especially those that are located in wood areas, have a line item in their golf maintenance budget which includes tree and brush removal and maintenance.

It is imperative, therefore, that we at Pocono Farms include annually in our golf maintenance budget the cost of tree and brush removal and maintenance to improve not only the golf course, but the continued playability and enjoyment of our course. Some of the costs of the aforementioned items may be offset by savings associated with less debris and leaf removal and less maintenance trimming certain areas.

That being said, trees are, and always will be, an asset to our course and if properly maintained will provide a great deal of enjoyment and beauty as we play.

After a wonderful month filled with the harvest festival, murder mystery, casino trip, and tons of candy at our Halloween party; it is time to switch gears and get the turkey and cranberry sauce out! This upcoming month you will have a great opportunity to experience the beautiful fall foliage on our bus trip to local wineries including Renegade, Franklin Hill Vineyards, Sorrenti’s Cherry Valley, and Mountain View. Each location will provide a sampling and a glass as a keep sake with a brick oven pizza lunch provided by Cherry Valley Vineyards. This month we will also be hosting a family trivia night at the clubhouse, where your wits will be tested to see who really is the smartest in the family! Finally, to conclude the month, Spirted Arts will be holding a Paint & Sip instruction class in the clubhouse, so all of us of age individuals, will take part in expressing our artistic talents with some liquid courage. With the holiday season just around the corner, I want to remind everyone of our tree lighting event to decorate the clubhouse and even create your own ornament!

Denny Pig Roast Recap

Thank you to everyone who attended the 2018 Annual Denny Bachelor Pig Roast and Golf Tournament.

It was the last weekend of summer and the best tournament day weather all year. It was wet, but no rain gear was required for the 29th year in a row.

Jeff Bunker, Dean Barone, Bill Rizzo and Glenn Erdman won the day with a tournament record score of 54 - 18 under par. They purchased many Mulligans and used them better than any other group. The bragging rights are worth more than the prize money at this event.

We raised over $7,000 this year for the Pocono Farms Scholarship Fund, so let me recognize some of the people who helped make that possible.

Kyle and his team did an awesome job getting everyone in their carts and keeping the scores.

The grounds crew had the course in great shape despite weeks and weeks of rain.

Greg Shields bought the beer, Uncle Bud made the Bloody Mary’s and Katrina made sure the pig was roasted right for a hungry crowd.

Frank Milano sold Mulligans. Brian Cavanaugh ran the putting contest and Uncle Bud, Bob Fasulka and Gary Kossin manned the Circles of Gold on #3 and #11. Patty Callahan and Ladies Golf donated a basket of cheer.

Neil Carlson as always raised the final donations with an auction including an autographed photo of Lee Trevino.

Hole sponsors who donated over $1500 total included: Antola, Basile, Braggert, Brescher, Bunker, Carlson, Debrincat, Denny, Doerr, Hamil, Horowitz, Mason, Milano, Preuss, Reiner, Ribardo, Riggi, Sheilds, Sirolly, Sowolski, Spear, Stephen and Sturdevant.

Frank Debrincat was recognized as the inspiration for the fundraising effort that started about 16 years ago, raising over $85,000. We gave Frank a bottle of Jack Daniels and sent him off to retirement someplace in Florida. He says he’ll be back next year.

You’re all invited back for the 30th annual which will promise to be a special event, a true Fall equinox, the 21st of September 2019.

A Beautiful Day For A Race!

We had a great turn out and great weather for our Second Annual PFCCA 5K Fun Run/Walk.

As of right now, we have just over $150 to donate to the Feeding Families Ministry but I have something up my sleeve to increase that donation. Please stop into the Fitness Center to see more race pictures and results of our runners and walkers!

Thank you to Kirby Race Timing, Feeding Families Ministry, Susan Nevarez and Samantha Joseph, Nick Gallagher, and Artie Furman for helping to make this year’s race a success!
