No matter what you enjoy, there are many reasons to celebrate, appreciate and enjoy time with neighbors, friends and relatives.

Public Safety

FURMAN, DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC SAFETY “Winter winds have brought branches down, sticks and twigs strewn all around but Spring has sprung and the grass is growing and soon enough it will need some mowing. I know it is early and not ready yet but do not forget or a citation you will get. Do what is right and not what is wrong and please everyone let’s just all get along.”

May is here and with any luck it has arrived with warmth and sunshine. Golf is in full swing (pun intended) and we are all preparing for the official arrival of summer. Homeowners are hard at work getting projects and those honey do lists, completed.

Some of you are misbehaving, you know who you are and so do I. I have been asked many times this year why we require certain things in the permit process. I thought this would be a good time to explain some of them.

We ask for a sample of the shingle for roof permits. The color if it is a metal roof, a sample or color for tile or slate roofs. The reasons are quite simple. The shingle colors used to be very basic.

Now they come in many colors. Metal roofs come in basically every color known to man. Slate and tile roofs again are more basic, but they do have color variations. We ask to see what you would like to use to simply ensure that it is within the color spectrum allowed in the Farms. I have had people want to use fluorescent colors, colors so bright you may need sunglasses to look at it. I just simply need to see it.

The same goes for paint colors and for siding colors, again both will run the gamut. Dozens, if not hundreds of colors are available.

We need to know so we can make sure that it is allowable.

Please do not just go ahead and do it. Ask first. Some things will need to have a drawing supplied with them. The township will require this. Placement of a shed, garage, gazeebo or deck. These are the type of things that will have a fee associated with them also. Also a drawing must be provided. It generally does not have to be a professionally done drawing, but rather a simple pencil sketch that shows the layout of your property and where you would like the placement of said item.

What makes it extremely difficult is when people for whatever reason do not apply for their proper permits. Not just from us, but from the township as well. In those cases it is a long, painful and costly process for the homeowner to get things in compliance. Well that is all for now but as always if you have questions or concerns just call or stop by, my door is always open.

Memorial Weekend Silent Auction Come one come all!

This Memorial weekend we will be having a silent auction.

The items for sale are the 4 glass panels that were in the Grill Room, adorned with the PFCCA logo. We know you remember those stallions fondly and as such we believe there are some of you who would like to have one or more for your very own.

There are 2 large and 2 smaller panels. The larger one measure 51 ½” wide and are 32” tall. The smaller ones measure 41 ½” wide and are 32” tall. All panels are sold individually.

Although all 4 are similar in appearance, each has subtle differences from the others and is therefore unique. That is why for the auction they will be labeled simply and plainly as Panel 1, Panel 2, Panel 3 and Panel 4.

In your bids please be specific as to which panel you are bidding on. Buy one or two or all, the choice is yours. Bid early and bid strong, you don’t want to go home empty handed. These are the only ones known to exist in the entire world and as such, would make a fine addition to any collection or to any home.

The panels will be on display for inspection and for your viewing pleasure. Come to bid or to simply stroll down memory lane recalling the many golf events, holes in one and celebrations with friends and loved ones. These 4 steeds will help you ensure that those memories last a lifetime.

Winners will be announced on Sunday, May 26th, at 3pm. Bids can be mailed in, but please leave plenty of time for them to arrive. Bids can also be given to the Admin staff at the Fitness Center.

Any and all bids must be received no later than close of business 4:30pm Saturday, May 25th. This is to ensure enough time to properly tabulate the bids.

Crime Watch Activity Report

The arrival of May takes the word snow out of any conversation or consideration. By now the green should be popping, the golf course is open and the weed and feed has probably been administered. Now we wait to see if our yearly battle with dandelions and crab grass has paid any dividends.

IN THE FARMS Before we know it we will be cutting the lawn and wondering why in this most inventive land, someone has not found a way to make grass grow lush and slowly. Really slowly, like an occasional trim, maybe once a month.

In cooperation with the request of the A & B

committee, the crime watch patrol becomes the eyes of the community and turns in properties that are not keeping up with the standards we have all agreed to maintain. So, if the grass gets very long, or the property has not been cleaned up from the winter accumulations, we notify the code official, who will in turn notify an offender that action needs to be taken. As has been said many times, no one wants fines to be part of our experience here, but rather the goal is to have noncompliance items corrected as soon as possible.

We have noticed that since the garbage collection has been changed to Tuesday for all residents that many cans are still being put out early.

In time I assume everyone will get used to the change, and I imagine the bears will do their part in helping everyone comply with the new day.

These hearty souls would like more of you to join us, if only to watch the green and flowers change the look of your neighborhood. My work experience primarily involved small business owners, contractors, professionals, and several homeowner associations very similar to PFCCA. What is your motivation for seeking a seat on the Board of Directors? Pocono Farms is my home! I want the best community possible to benefit all of our present and future residents.

If elected, in what areas do you hope to influence the Board concerning the direction and governance of this community? Pocono Farms has experienced many periods of growth over the years. Prior Boards have always addressed the immediate situations facing residents. We must continue in a fiscally responsible manner, but long range planning should become a greater priority.

Why should the membership elect you to the Board of Directors? I have many years experience working with our community management and board. I will try to be positive and objective while listening to all. Per an old quote “Life doesn’t require that we be the best, only that we try our best.”

I have managed a 300 employee business that generates approximately $100,000,000 in sales annually for 13 years. This has allowed me to develop the skill sets of listening to others, dealing successfully with people of diverse backgrounds and being financially responsible.

What is your motivation for seeking a seat on the Board of Directors? To help keep Pocono Farms moving in the right direction by offering our members the programs and amenities they want while at the same time insuring our community is financially sound.

If elected, in what areas do you hope to influence the Board concerning the direction and governance of this community? Continue the recent success we have had of collecting dues from all of our members and investing that money wisely. Do everything possible to insure our dues are spent on things that bring value to our community and increase our property value.

Why should the membership elect you to the Board of Directors? Not only have I lived in Pocono Farms for 23 years but I have both children and grandchildren that have bought homes and live here full time. As a resident I have a very strong desire to make sure that Pocono Farms is a great place to live for people of all ages.

Describe any skills, talents, or specialized training, which as a Board Member, you feel will be beneficial to the community. VP of National Property Insurance Company, Executive VP of Insurance Broker; Positions included responsibilities for staffing, budget development/control and growth. Negotiated on a daily basis with CEO’s and CFO’s of Fortune 1000 companies. These skills transfer to the running of a community association.

What is your motivation for seeking a seat on the Board of Directors? The Community has been successfully digging itself out of the setbacks caused by the depression started in 2008. In spite of declining revenues, the Board and Management team have managed to control expenses and continue on a positive path. Investment in the community’s future has continued while I served on the board. I want to be part of continuing this.

If elected, in what areas do you hope to influence the Board concerning the direction and governance of this community? To continue to maintain and improve the assets and amenities of our community.

Why should the membership elect you to the Board of Directors? I have a good understanding of what the majority of our community members desire regarding what Pocono Farms is presently and should be in the future. I will continue the effort I put forth in my last term on the Board of Directors.

H UGH DOR A N If you want your HOA to put your needs and those of your property FIRST, you need to vote me onto your Board. Our current team most of whom has stayed the same for years and just rotated titles, is not in favor of the countless changes that I have been proposing at their monthly meetings for almost a decade.

Discussing my background is not really what matters as I hope you care foremost about enjoying and improvement in your property value, greater wisdom in how your dollars are spent and in a reduction of your annual Association fee. So briefly, since I have to speak about this, I am a Vietnam Veteran and I am retired from a lengthy union career as an operations engineer, a shop steward and the manager of a commercial building. Of greatest importance, on my more than thirty years as a PFCC homeowner and resident, not only have I been an active participant in various committees and faithfully attended monthly PFCC Board meetings though, regrettably, most often as the only homeowner present, I have remained well informed of our Board’s management of our finances and fluent in our Association’s bylaws, codes, and regulations.

If you have met me, you know that I did not author this introduction. It was written by an anonymous resident who believes in my capacity to create change. I recently took the opportunity to meet individually with a great many PFCC homeowners and they shared enormous discontent and a sense of powerlessness. Each told me that the reason for not attending the annual meetings is the firm belief that noting in our community will ever improve and that efforts toward such are futile. I’m a rough-around-the-edges kind of guy, I’m not polished and I don’t hesitate to speak my truths so I’m not likely to be elected PFCC’s Most Congenial Fellow. But I am known to be fluent in the past and current decisions made by our Board and know to be honest and ethical and to at all times represent the needs of our homeowners.

If you believe that we need a change, you must vote for me. Also, you must consider running for the Board as I cannot do alone that which is necessary and need the support of others who seek change. Lastly, you must vote via your mailed ballots and at the Annual Meeting scheduled this year at 10 AM on Saturday, July 20th at the Pocono Community Church.

I beg you to support improvements that will only come with change.

Describe any skills, talents or specialized training, which as a Board Member, you feel will be beneficial to the community: I have worked with a federal grant of 3 million with CMO Montifiore proving that managed care can reduce medical cost and it did save Medicare $24.5 million in its first year with developing a program with a call center and nurse case management enrolling Bronx, NY residents to a pilot the program built from foundations and with people who believed in a possible solution; I want to bring my faith of solutions to the Farms. I have also developed a 6 million dollar Lead teacher project that was for teachers retention and principals development in a contracted role; with a Student achievement gap solution for students where most believed could not learn. which resulted in 45 present increase in state reading and math test in its first year within the worst 10 performing schools in the city; This is one of my Tracts of success where my belief and hard work achieved the impossible thought from many and against every odd in a huge city. I Then went to served as a NYC Education Board Member for 4 years including the retirement Board that out preformed all other funds compared to in the city of New York City Municipalities in our last economic crash; another tract of proven success that where I go and contribute has proven best. During my term as school board official I was instrumental in building new school buildings and restructuring the procurement process by which included the public and closer board oversights. I am a certified trained in project manager MCTS, Senior HR professional SPHR , Business Analysts CBAP, Technologist MT, Oracle Database 11g Administrator ODACP, NYC Government Procurements Certified, various systems operations such as but not limited to financial accounting with SAP certified. I also hold a dual B.A Degree in Economics and Political Science from Lehman College. MS in management and leadership concentration public Administration and Economics at ESU PA graduation date of 2020.

What is your motivation for seeking a seat on the Board of Directors: With my prospective, ambition, motivation, beliefs and past successful professional experience I will add to a ever needed change to ensure our investments in the Farms will last for the next generation owners; A lasting legacy is important to me and I’m sure to many. However, I don’t want the farms legacy to effect our choices at our dinner tables.

April showers bring May flowers right? I am so ready to see the fresh green shades of the trees and the beautiful colors of the flowers that spring brings. Hearing the song singing of the birds and watching the butterflies float upon the spring breeze adding to the beauty of spring.

Much like the change of seasons we experience throughout the year, the fitness industry is ever changing and evolving. As the industry changes so do the personal trainers, fitness instructors and directors. Many of us take our fitness certifications seriously as it is our profession while others love to share what they learn with others as more of a hobby. While we all love what we do as we are all helping others become the beautiful people we know they are.

When we talk of certifications we can talk about Personal Training certifications, which allow the trainer to work one on one with a client. Teaching them proper form and guiding them through an individualized plan designed for their personal goals. Then there are Group Fitness Instructor Certifications, which allow the instructor to teach any form of group fitness class. Finally, we can talk about specialized certifications, which teach the instructor a specific platform and break that platform down specifically that is unique to that area of group fitness.

Here at Pocono Farms we have all of the above and I love that we have a variety of levels and skill sets to offer our community. As your Fitness Director, I am always learning and growing in my personal fitness journey.

This is my profession but it did not start out that way. I started out here at Pocono Farms as just a woman interested in fitness and on my own personal journey. I was certified in a couple specific platforms and I had a lot of knowledge but was not very confident in my ability to share it. Two and a half years later, I am currently Group Fitness certified which allows me to teach any class that I wish. As I have learned the skills to put together a full class set to the proper music to bring the best workout to all of you. I am also certified in two specific areas which are Sunrise Yoga and Resistance training: Circuit Training. I have two certifications that are recognized in the at home workout industry as well. They are PiYo and P90X. I am currently working on a specialized certification in Water Aerobics and Yoga 1 and 2.

You see knowledge is power! Although I may never teach a yoga class or put together a resistance training circuit, I have the knowledge to do so should I want to or should the members want that type of class. I am always listening to the fitness members and the community to ensure that we keep up with the trends, and to make sure that we are able to offer the variety of classes that you ask for. While I cannot always make things happen on a dime, I am always working towards meeting your expectations, as well as mine.

I am super excited for the summer season! I have so many new ideas and have collaborated with our Recreation Director, Nick, to bring you some new and fun events. Be sure you check your emails for updated class information or stop into the Fitness Center! I would love to hear your ideas and chat with you. As always thank you for your kind words and constant encouragement. I appreciate it. Here’s to the beauty that spring has to offer and the excitement that summer will bring!

BY KYLE MONAHAN Hello golfers, As spring arrives here in the Poconos so does our golf games.

Winter is long and we never seem to do enough in the off season to keep our golf game in line. Golf is a difficult sport. As we play more and more, we fix bad habits and develop new ones. One thing that should never change is our fundamentals.

Do yourself a favor and review all of your fundamentals at the start of the golf season. I find that a lot of my students forget to review their fundamentals and many of their issues are due because of them being incorrect. Fundamentals in golf are grip, aim and set up. I would recommend getting a golf lesson to review your fundamentals, but here are a few tips regarding a great grip.

The grip is the most important part of the golf swing. The only contact a player has with his or her club is their hands. A bad grip will lead to bad shots. The three keys ingredients to a great grip are the three P’s; placement, position and pressure. Placement of hands on a grip should be matched. When a player looks down at their hands on the golf club the V’s created with the thumb and pointer finger should be pointing to the same position. When I talk about the V’s I am talking about the point at the bottom. If you are a right handed golfer and you are looking down at the top of the club, the bottom of the V’s from your left hand and right hand should be pointed to your right shoulder. If they are not pointed to the same location rotate your hand or hands on the grip until they are both pointed to the right shoulder.

When we position our hand on the golf club we want to make sure we are not to low or not too high. As a right handed golfer your hand should be below the butt of the club. Some manufacturers will even put a line just below the grip to help us out. If your left hand is beyond the butt of the grip, the club will actually move in your hands. If you wear a glove and notice that the bottom of the palm is worn out then you are holding your club to high in the grip. The placement of the hands on the grip is done so you may hit the club to its maximum potential. If you are ever in a situation where your distance to the hole is in between two clubs, you may do what we call chocking down on the grip.

So an example would be my 8 iron goes 150 and my 9 goes 140. If my yardage to the hole is 145, I will take my 8 iron and grip down on the grip closer to the shaft. This will allow me to hit the ball 145 yards since I am not taking the true value of the club.

The last P is pressure. How hard you hold the grip of the club.

If you are holding the grip so tight you see veins popping out of your arms, then you, my friend, are squeezing too hard. If you are holding the club so loose that the club slips out of your hands, then you my friend are holding the club too loosely. Hold the club as if you are holding a bird. You don’t want to squeeze the bird so hard you hurt it. You also don’t want to hold the bird so lightly is flies away. Find the happy medium and your grip will be perfect. A grip with perfect pressure will lead to smoother swings.

I hope these tips about the grip will help your game this year.

Please don’t hesitate to schedule a golf lesson with me or my staff to learn more about the golf game. I can never stress enough the importance to getting golf lessons. If golf PGA Tour professionals are receiving golf lessons every week, then why aren’t we?

I cannot believe it is already May and summer is upon us.

This month we have many activities planned for the community. To start off the month, back by popular demand we have a trip to Blue Ridge Winery for a catered dinner and live music.

You cannot go wrong with this awesome date night event! Following the winery trip on May 3rd, we have our Ice breaker event to kick off a new season of golfing, along with the Kentucky Derby.

Come experience a day of fancy hats, food, drinks, and enjoy what some say is “the greatest 2 minutes in sports”.

Next in this action packed weekend we have our fiesta for Cinco de Mayo. From the recreation department we will have piñatas, competition games, and maybe even a special guest to liven up the party! On Thursday, May 9th the bocce ball league will have its first meeting to discuss the season and teams for 2019. Come try something new with a great group of people and some friendly competition! Moving forward we have our Mother’s Day Brunch in the Lakeside Bar & Grill so for all those families that want to do something a little more than just breakfast in bed with mom, sign up with Katrina for an extra special Mother’s Day. In the offseason, Pocono Farms

renovated the downstairs of the banquet room, so for our community to see the beautiful renovations we will be hosting an open house on May 11th. During the open house you will hear from the directors and managers about all the upcoming events we have for the summer season!

To conclude our activity packed month we will have our first holiday weekend of the summer. Memorial Day festivities will include a pool party, moon bounces, bingo, fishing derby, live music, and flag ceremony to honor those who we have lost in service to
