Weather events at times cause all of us to look at how they affect our personal and professional lives. When extreme weather is forecasted, we should all take the necessary steps to ensure our safety and the safety of others. During extreme weather events, we will try to communicate as much information to our members as we can. Using email is the quickest and most efficient way for us to communicate. When these extreme events happen, we will make every attempt to communicate the office and facility hours to you or any changes in hours. At times, the weather does require us to make decisions to open or close the offices, close them early, or open them later. We make those decisions based on the best available information provided to us. Although we are cautious not to overreact, we need to take the necessary steps to ensure the safety of the staff. We need to make sure that they can make it home safely, or at times defer the opening of the offices so that they may get to work safely. Whether it is an extreme weather or snow event, the Maintenance Department will be on site clearing the roadways and plowing snow. Please understand that in either case, it does take time to get to 80+ cul-de-sacs, especially if the snow is heavy or there is an abundance of it. We will get there. When it is really coming down quicker than we can plow it, we will make one pass through all of the cul-de-sacs to open the road up. We will then come back again to open up more and then usually a third time to push the snow back as far as we can in preparation for the next event. We understand that all of us have different work schedules and other commitments that require us to travel, even in inclement weather. We ask for your patience and cooperation during these times. Understand that the staff is out there and we will get to all of the Association owned roads in the most safe and efficient manner. We do rotate the starting point each and every snow fall so that you are not always the last to be plowed or always the first to be plowed. This has seemed to work well the past. Have a safe, healthy, and prosperous New Year!

From You r Boa r d Of Dir ec tor s BY ANNETTE DOERR Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow… Happy January everyone! Now that the hustle and bustle of the holiday season has wound down for the most part, we can start getting into our new normal routines. If your New Years resolution was to get into better shape, stop by our fitness center and look into a membership. It’s clean, convenient, affordable and right around the corner! Unless you just moved in to our wonderful community (welcome if that’s the case), you’re already familiar with the unique challenges we face living on this beautiful mountain. Some years are worse than others; here’s hoping now that it’s officially winter, 2020 rings in with a mild one for all of us in Pocono Farms. Our weather is usually cold and snowy through most of March, so although you’re reading this in January, keep these tips in mind throughout the rest of our blustery winter. On a positive note, our days are getting a little lighter each day!

idea@poconofarms.com DO YOU HAVE A .... comment? question? suggestion? Send an email to a current board member. Responses will be sent directly to the sender and periodically published in the Weathervane.

Are you receiving our e-mail blasts? If not please check the following: 1. Make sure we are not going to your spam or junk folder 2. Make sure we are an approved recipient on your list (just add us to your address book ~ webmaster@poconofarms.com) If you are still not receiving e-mails let us know at admin@poconofarms.com or call the office: 570-894-4435 or drop us a line at: Pocono Farms Country Club - 182 Lake Rd., Tobyhanna, PA 18466

Our maintenance department is well-stocked and fully staffed to take on the challenges that a Tobyhanna winter can bestow upon us. If you live in a cul-de-sack or private road that Pocono Farms maintains you’ll see them out and about when the weather is at its worst. Public roads are cared for by the township. If you live in the vicinity of a fire hydrant, please make sure that it’s dug out and accessible in case of emergency. Our fireman, several of which are Pocono Farms residents, are volunteers and spend hundreds of hours training annually; the least we can do is make sure they can do their job and access a hydrant quickly if necessary. As a rule of thumb, hydrants should be cleared of snow and debris 3-feet on each side, so that they can easily be accessed in every direction. Power can go out for a variety of reasons, make sure you have a plan to stay warm like having extra firewood on hand if you have a fireplace or wood stove. Candles, while beautiful, can cause a fire risk, so stick with lanterns and flashlights when possible. And now’s a great time to stock up on extra batteries so you’re always prepared if the lights do go out! Make sure you report any outages directly to the power company. Never assume your neighbor already called it in, they may be thinking the same thing! PPL has an “Outages” section on the main page of their website to make it easy for you to report any issues. Take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with their website, you can even report an outage by text: (https://www.pplelectric.com/) Winter is a great time to try dinner at the Lakeside Grill and Pub or attend one of the many events planned. It’s a great way to meet your neighbors while enjoying a fun night out. Keep an eye on the website, your email, the Facebook page, and in Weathervane to keep abreast of upcoming events this winter. It’s awesome to have entertainment and dining options right here in Pocono Farms, especially in the winter! If you’re lucky enough to be one of our snowbirds, and you’re reading this on a warm sunny beach, we hope you’re enjoying your winter. We look forward to the warmer weather and having you back home! Stay safe everyone!

L et t er to t he Editor We have had a night to remember last night at our club, right here at Pocono Farms, it was our Holiday party. My wife and I have been members for 39 years, first as weekenders, where we would come up on Friday night and leave Sunday night. Upon our arrival, we would put our heat on in the house, and then go up to the club, (winter months). On our first time to the club, which is now the Lakeside Grill & Pub, we had a couple ladies come up to us and welcome us to Pocono Farms, which really impressed us both. Since that time we became regular Friday night people.

NEW FOR 2020 at the Farms Brand new website that includes easier navigation with updated technology to insure that you stay informed in all your community happenings and opportunities New Lakeside Grill and Pub menu starting in January Contact the administration office to register your email address to receive up to the minute information at your fingertips. We ask that anyone that has not been receiving emails recently to contact the administration to update your information. We will also now be able to accept long term rental tenants emails.

We became an active couple in our community, played a little tennis, joined golf, and enjoyed many of the other opportunities the Farms had for members. I am writing today (December 10, 2019) to let the members of Pocono Farms, know what they missed last night. Pocono Farms has such a beautiful banquet facility and so many great amenities, we as members should utilize them all. In the 39 years here, with all the New Year Eve’s parties, member/ member golf events and special functions my wife and I have attended, this was by far the best I can ever remember, it was so well put together, I was amazed. There was a live band that played our kind of music. The food was excellent, you could not find better even in Manhattan, the members who attended made this special also. I need to recognize a few people and I am sure I will forget someone. I have to start with our Assistant General Manager Katrina, for putting this together and finding that band, the entire staff, our chef and his entire staff and Nick who was running around all night. Once more thank you for a great evening, that we can all talk about for a long time. God Bless America. Richard Brescher WEAT HERVANE

Cardio kickboxing will be introduced this month and will be a class that you will need to sign up for as space will be limited. I am also excited to announce that we will be offering personal training sessions in the New Year! This is a fantastic addition to our fitness center and will keep us comparable to other fitness centers in the area. I will also be putting together a meal plan for those of you interested in cleaning up your eating habits. I know winter time can be a time to relax and stay snuggled up inside our homes. We tend to eat all those nice comfort foods and left over sweets from our holiday gatherings. However, I encourage you to stay active. Winter time also brings snow and shoveling. Some of us are not used to the physical activity these winter events can bring and it is then that we can get into trouble. Just 30 minutes a day can be a life saver.

BY RODGER SPEAR The New Handicap System Guess what guys and gals! Just when we thought we understood the current handicap system the USGA and the R&A, after a number of years of hard work, review and dialog created the World Handicap System. The new system is designed to bring a single set of rules for handicapping and provide a more consistent measure of a player’s ability throughout the world. These new handicapping rules go into effect on January 1, 2020. The question is, how will these changes impact the average golfer? The answer, according to the experts, is not much maybe a slight movement up or down. Under the new system your top eight of twenty rounds, will count toward your handicap, not ten out of twenty under the old system. It should be noted that you only have to play three 18-hole rounds or six 9-hole rounds to create a handicap, rather than the previous five 18-hole rounds. Also, posting 9-hole scores are encouraged. The new maximum handicap index is fiftyfour replacing the 36.4 max for men and the 40.4 for women. The new system will update your index every day as opposed to the old approach which revised the index on a bi-monthly basis. Obviously, this will improve the accuracy of an index and reflect a timely handicap on any particular day. It is therefore imperative that you post your scores daily.

Host Your Event in Your Community’s Picturesque Lakeside Banquet Facility Let us assist you in planning your next special event Baptism • Bar / Bat Mitzvah • Confirmation Family Reunion • First Communion Quinceanera • Rehearsal Dinner Shower • Sweet 16 • Wedding

With seating for 20 to 120 people Contact Katrina: 570-894-4435 ext. 132 katrinaw@poconofarms.com

Another factor that will be considered is the “Playing Conditions Calculator” which compares all scores posted on the same day at the same course in order to determine if the course played easier or more difficult as to setup and/or weather conditions. It will include all players, no matter what tees are played or skill level. The USGA has indicated that an adjustment will not happen often; however, given certain conditions it can. Over the years we have all used Equitable Stroke Control handicapping hole by hole with each hole having a maximum number of strokes a player can post. As of January 1, 2020 the new guideline is “Net Double Bogey”. As an example, if a player with a course handicap of 13 is playing the 5th handicap hole, the maximum score a player can post on that hole would be a double bogey plus 1. If the 5th most difficult hole is a Par 3 a score of 6 would be a net double bogey. If a player is not getting a stroke on a particular hole the player would score a double bogey. Lastly, there will be an adjustment to a player’s index for periods of time that a player struggled with their play. As an example, if your past six or more scores are significantly higher than your normal scores, you will probably run into a ‘soft cap”. Furthermore, if your handicap gets worse by 3 points in a 12 month span, further scores will only be calculated at 50%. A “hard cap” applies if a handicap gets worse by 5 points in a 12 month span. The good news is that all you really have to do is insure that you post your scores daily. Specifically on the day you play, and insure that you apply the new “Net Double Bogey” to your scores.
