FYI The swale in the front of your yard is for water runoff, to expedite the flow of water during storms. It is located at most properties near the roadway, in front of your homes, connected to your driveways. The mowing/weed whacking and overall care of the swale is each homeowner’s responsibility. Anything left in the swale will impede the flow of water.

If the flow is backed up enough, the result is flooding. The swale needs to be maintained to help prevent water from backing up on to your property. Also each homeowner is responsible to clean out their personal drainage pipe (culvert pipe) that is beneath almost every driveway. If it gets clogged, the water cannot flow and flooding may result.

Pocono Farms Women’s Club is starting a new fundraiser held monthly – a well-known dice Festival 9-17_Layout 1 9/18/2017 game called BUNCO (you can check it out on the internet) that takes noadskill – but is a lot of 10:18 PM Page 1 fun. The game will be played at the fitness center lower level the 1st Wednesday of the month. The cost is $5 to play with part of the proceeds going to the Women’s Club to bolster l Bounce Houses their yearly donations to the Tobyhanna community - and part l Ninja Warrior Course going to the winner of the game that day. The amount of the l Rock Climbing Wall prize is based on the number of players for the day (similar to Food the Swim Club’s Bingo game). Crime Watch Activity Report

Hello everyone! I’m sure by now we are all feeling the effects of winter. Yuck! That being said, since there’s no way to stop it, again I will remind you what you can do to make it a little easier on yourselves.

For your vehicles, make sure you have good tires on your car. Also, check your battery and your windshield wipers.

Always make sure to check these three things and winter driving will not be as bad as it could be. A trusted mechanic can always check these things for you but it is very simple to do yourself. The easiest are the wipers. If you see streaks on your windshield, you need new wipers, plain and simple.

Next are the tires. Take a penny and put Lincoln’s head into the tread of your tire. If you’re not down to Lincoln’s beard and beyond, you are running low on tread and should consider changing them. Lastly, the battery. If when you start your car when it’s cool and the car starts sluggishly, it will only get worse when it’s cold and below freezing.

Next, on to your home. If you are one of our snowbirds and have already migrated south, I’m sure you have remembered to stop your mail, to have your driveway and your walkways cleared of snow and to leave a light on in one of your rooms.

If you haven’t left yet, please make sure to do these things.

A cleared driveway lets people know that someone is home.

Nothing speaks more to a would be criminal than mail piling up, no footprints and mounds of snow around your home. It is basically an invitation to come on in, no one is home.

If you are down south right now enjoying yourself in sunny Florida, feel free to invite me down and we can continue this conversation on the beach. As always, should you have questions or concerns, feel free to call me or stop by. My door is always open.

The holidays are behind us and hopefully all good memories remain. The volunteers were out there in November and early December even though most were busy with Thanksgiving and preparing for Christmas. They patrolled 84 hours in spite of the busy season.

If you’ve been reading the paper and keeping up with the news, there was a constant theme about all of the ways to detect the various scams that pop up during the Christmas season.

For those of you that are out of the house working every day, it must be worrisome if you’ve done a lot of online shopping and are expecting packages to be delivered while you’re not home. It seems every few days you hear about packages being taken off someone’s porch.

A recent e-mail from one of the volunteers spoke of a scam from someone posing as an AT&T representative saying they were doing a line check. They would ask you to hit 9-0-# so they could complete the check. It turns out, by hitting this combination you would be opening your line for anyone’s use, both AT&T and Verizon confirmed action. So, keep on your toes, they’re always out there trying.

A Horse With No Farm

So it seems that all that is required to call a “country club” a country club is a combination of sporting, social and recreational activities, not to mention, having land in the country.

If this sounds like a pretty short order to fill, that’s likely because it is. Find some land, form a club with

sporting and socializing and you’re done. But, as I’ve said in previous articles, the hard part is that someone has to come to the country to sport and socialize. More than one someone and preferably a few hundred. Pocono Farms “Country Club” was built and designed around a 40 acre lake and a nine

hole golf course as the main attraction. A restaurant, a sandy beach, tennis courts and a swimming pool rounded out the package.

Tennis was booming in the seventies so Recradel decided to make an investment building three tennis courts, a lesson court, and a pro shop. Carl Paulis, tennis pro from Lucayan Beach Hotel in Grand Bahama, was hired to organize league play and teach eager residents. He was six foot ten and beach blonde, so I imagine him looking like tall, skinny Barney Rubble, proudly wearing his Wimbledon white. He stocked the pro shop with racquets, balls, clothing, and also purchased a ball cannon which shot tennis balls over the net to improve ground strokes during lessons. My uncle purchased a racquet stringer and set up in the pro shop, earning money and helping out the community.

name a few. Back in the seventies, players used small wooden rackets that had to be stored in wooden frames to prevent warping. Every tennis court in the ‘70s looked like Wimbledon, even if it was in Pocono Farms.

Due to the popularity of the sport, tennis courts were always crowded.

Just as tee times needed to be booked for golf, reservations were required for tennis. Members had priority for court time.

Summer weekends were jam packed. Kids, aspiring to be the next Bjorn Borg and John McEnroes, were only allowed on the courts in the late afternoon.

Several tournaments were held during the year and club champions were crowned for every category: men and women singles, men and women doubles, mixed doubles. Members were ranked for eventual tournament play based on the” ladder” system.

Members also participated against other communities within the area as well.

Tennis was a family activity; if one member played, everyone played. My whole family participated. My grandfather competed against Dr. Kudyba and Dr. Cicero for club championships and even my grandmother, wearing the “short white” skirts played doubles consistently with Marilyn Reukoff. Other members included the Barbas, the Blooms, the Feeneys, the Gelskys, the Moores, the Rachmanns, and the Riggi families to 8

tennis shoes. Women played in their short white skirts and bloomers, covering their behinds. Everyone aspired to be the next Rod Laver or Chris Evert as tennis was at its peak. Carl Paulis was the first and only tennis pro the Farms would hire. After he left the Farms, George and Lorraine Lease took over as volunteers to keep the tennis program intact. They ran all the tournaments and lessons seamlessly to support the tennis community within the Farms.

To round out the recreational offerings, Recra-del built an Olympic size swimming pool and kiddie pool. Locker

rooms were also built, taking up the entire upstairs of the clubhouse, where what is now the bar and grill room. The pool and locker rooms were ambitious investments for the size of the community, but part of a larger plan to attract members. The country club offerings were complete and members were encouraged to spend the day, perhaps beginning their day with a round of nine holes, going for a swim, having lunch, (plus a cocktail), a quick round of tennis, and ending with a late afternoon respite on the sandy beach, “sawing logs”.

My grandmother tells the story how one day, Howard Wantaugh, part time resident and reporter for the Daily News, walked through the gate complaining about the gravel and dust and her friend, Sandy Raymond, tipping down her sunglasses replied, “What do you think this is, the f*ing Doral?”

Residents were offered three membership options.

They could join amenities individually or they could buy all three in a package deal. For a onetime payment of $1200 per family, residents could purchase a perpetual membership.

I had to look up what the Doral was, but the irony is clear, it was most certainly not the Doral. The Doral was named for real estate moguls, Doris and Alfred Kaskel in the 1950’s, a combination of their names.

The Doral is an exclusive place for jetsetters to be “seen” and “pampered”.

At that time, it appeared to be a good investment.

Still, the dream hadn’t been quite put together yet. The pool, still surrounded by red gravel, was far from complete. A friend of the community offered to pave the apron around the pool, an upgrade from the gravel, but still hot black macadam.

We have a 9 hole ladies league and 18 hole ladies league on Tuesdays, and Wednesday is a fun day of golf with the ladies.

This is how it works: you have to be a fitness center member to participate. I will set up a log book for any member to keep track of their mileage either using the cardio machines or taking classes. Each participant needs 26 miles to be entered into a drawing to win a personal training session with me.

Details will be posted in the fitness center, so stop by and check it out!!!

Now is the time to begin. Don’t put it off any longer. You are missing out on the fun, friends, and parties not to mention the fresh air and exercise. There are several men’s leagues during the week and one at night. So if you work, you can play after work or on the weekends.

Our Pro, Kyle Monahan, has put together this year’s tournament dates. Get a copy so you can plan your vacations around the tournaments. You don’t want to miss out. Get the kids involved. There is a Junior Golf clinic in the summer.

Well another year is in the books and the golf course is put to bed for its long winter nap. As I sit here reminiscing about the highlights of this past year, I will try to capture some of them that come to mind.

Let’s begin with the Pirate, Ed Ryan, winning the season long Presidents Cup. Was anyone surprised? I don’t think so. Jeff Bunker and the ever young Frank Milano winning the team competition, not shocked by this either. The Member

Guest was won by the team of the man with little to say, Brian McVeigh, and his partner, Kevin Sakow, a great showing by both.

The Member/Member was captured by Bill Eckardt and his partner, Ed Bragger I guess the name fits, at least for a year. The next major went to Dan Kosmala. I’m not sure how he does it with all the traveling to see Fish for the first time, over and over. The Woman’s Championship went to our one of our newest members Betsey Cuneo, well deserved.

She also had a hole in one this year, as did her playing husband Stan. What great memories for both of you.

Season’s Greetings, We had some great events in November to kick off the holiday season and even more for December. The Holiday Craft Fair in the clubhouse had a good turnout with over 20 different participating craft vendors.

A big thanks to Katrina. She did a great job organizing the fair and also organizing the proceeds that were donated to Feeding Family charity. Thank you to everyone who came out for the tree lighting event and helped decorate all three of the indoor trees. The kids did a great job making ornaments and decorating!

Also, that night we had full house for our Thanksgiving Trivia. Some of the highlighted December events were Santa Brunch, Italian Night Buffet, Prime Rib Night, Ugly Sweater Trivia, and the bus trip to Longwood Gardens.

As this year comes to an end, we have much to look forward to for the 2018 season. Some of the January events coming up: Dart Season – It is not too late to sign up! The season goes from January 7th through April 15th on Sundays at 1pm in the Grill room. (Teams of 2-3 people)

We will now move on to the senior championship, which I am pleased to say that yours truly defended his title, also it was exciting making a hole in one on number three during the competition.

On the woman’s side, AJ Oravec again won the championship. Where does she put all those trophies?

Well that’s it for the major championships, and what a great year it has been. I will close with some of my memories of the year.

That since 2004, over $48,000.00 in scholarships have been awarded through the Pocono Farms Golf Scholarship program



Contributions to this fund are made through various golf outings held throughout the golf season



Scholarships have also been awarded through funds set up memorializing past golf members



You do not have to be a golfer to submit an application.



There are eligibility requirements for the scholarship program. There is consideration given to academic record, extracurricular involvement, community or volunteer service, and your personal interview with the scholarship selection committee.



There are two (2) scholarships each worth $1,500. awarded each year.
