As the temperature continues to drop, our participation at the fitness center continues to increase and we are very pleased to announce that we have kept our commitment in making this amenity self-sustaining from it’s opening year, hence not relying on any additional funds to operate other than those revenues generated by the fitness club memberships. The plan in the 2018 budget is to continue our commitment to the community
We all look forward towards continuing our winter season and we have begun the process of planning our summer events. We continue to implement better costing to run the clubhouse more efficiently. We have begun the progress of our marketing plan for 2018. In addition, we continue to attract large events for the 2018 season. We continue to recognize our Director of Food and Beverage along with our Chef on a job well done. Welcome to 2018!! We begin each year with a ton of optimism. There is so much time and effort in planning and preparing the next year’s budget, that it is hard to not be excited to get started. Although it is nice to look at our successes of the past, we also like to continue to build on those successes, which provides those of us in operations even more motivation to continue to meet or exceed your expectations.
The Board has expanded the definition for the use of the amenity badge system starting in 2018. More members of your family may be eligible for badges than in the past. A letter was sent out with the operation assessment in January. You can always stop by the Administration office as well for a more detailed definition.
The Board asked the management staff to look into making the implementation of the food credit system a little less confusing. Hello everyone, February is here. I got enough coal for Christmas to keep me warm through January. I hope we have not gone the way of Erie and Buffalo and are buried under 12 feet of snow. If so, I will become a snowbird and write these articles from the beach next year. Gentlemen, remember the 14th is fast approaching, so don’t forget. I know your significant other won’t. On a more serious note, I have seen far too many incidents and close calls this year so far. As a result I would like to briefly touch upon winter driving safety.
Wow! When winter came there was not gradual cool down. Looking ahead to February usually means the real cold weather will be upon us, but not this year. Last month there were 13 drivers, spending 80 hours driving through the Farms. While no one reported any break-ins or suspicious
actions, there are always garbage cans left out longer than necessary, cars with no tags or the occasional dumping of furniture by some mysterious entity. One event was reported to one of our drivers. A couple who have been coming up here for years on weekends said someone had stolen the firewood that they had
delivered. Unfortunately, no one reported seeing the wood being removed from the property. This brings to mind that one of our best ways to keep your property safe is maintaining relations with your neighbors. The more familiar we are with our neighbors, the more likely we would spot something that just doesn’t look right. Those of us do not get away for the winter get to enjoy the games that are played with us by the township snow plows. Many have gone to great lengths to insure that they won’t get the mail box the next time through, but more likely than not, the snow plow will win again. I have been through this exercise so many times; my neighbor keeps a stop watch on me to see if I can beat the last time putting the box back in action. Unfortunately, the post office shows no pity. They’ll give you a notice, stopping delivery until you get the box back where they say it should be.
There are some basic principles that can be applied to winter driving, so let’s look at them. First of all, prepare your car before setting off. Make sure windows are de-iced. You are asking for trouble if you do not do this simple thing. The next is really easy, slow down. If you react to a deer jumping in front of you the same way you would in summer, you are going to find yourself in a situation you and your insurance company will not like. If visibility is poor or the road is snowy, icy or just wet, it will take you longer to react to hazards, so your speed should be reduced. Stopping distances are doubled on wet roads and are ten times greater on snow and ice, so please drive accordingly. Pay particular attention to signs warning of adverse conditions. Stay in control. Avoid harsh braking and acceleration and if the need arises, carry out maneuvers slowly and with extra care. Leave plenty of room between you and the car in front of you. If you follow these examples, I promise you will make it to Thirsty Thursday safe and sound.
The one positive thing about the winter is that people can use their snowmobiles within the Farms. However, if you look at chapter 218 of the Administrative Code that we all get when we move here, you’ll see a rather large section devoted to the use of snowmobiles on the property. They can be used between 9 am and dusk in designated areas and must be registered with the Administration Office. When conditions allow, you can ride on the snowmobile course; but only if the green flag is flown outside the clubhouse. Using a snowmobile requires a lot of responsibility and this section should be looked at before starting it up.

Volunteers continued to impact the course and other projects were undertaken (similar to today’s Monday morning breakfast club). Some of the lady golfers objected to the placement of the 17th tee. It was too long for the ladies they said. The original men’s tee was at the tip - they had to hit over the marsh that Al Janis called a “natural hazard.” The women’s tee was where the men hit from today. The new tee was built by volunteers and named the “Kitty Lee Tee” after the wife of John Lee, the project overseer. I think the men were just as happy with the result. Another project was to place a series of dirt mounds to the right side of the 18th hole landing area to keep tee shots from careening off the fairway. These mounds were affectionately named Dolly Parton. In 1985, the same management team worked with Coolbaugh Township
to pave the roads. With the golf course completed, the vacant lots were sold and new homes were built. The community was generating enough tax revenue to underwrite the paving of the main roads. This cut down the dust and significantly improved the overall image of the Farms. The community was taking shape. PFCC was consolidated (dissolved is a better word) into CAPF making one overall community board. Years later, CAPF was renamed to the name it is known by today, PFCCA, Pocono Farms Country Club Association. In the same year, Stan Kooyenga, a new member started the men’s Wednesday Golf League (the Swingers), which still exists today and basically, over the years, replaced the Thursday men’s league. The Denny Pig Roast and Golf Tournament, which began as my father’s bachelor party, remains a popular tournament to this day; characterized by Uncle
Bud’s blazing bloodies™ and the sacrificial hog. During the tournament’s 8th year, the conception of a male heir (my younger brother) was announced. For the tournament’s 25th anniversary my grandfather was awarded the “green” jacket embellished with the pig-roast logo, celebrating the longevity of the tournament, which is entering its 28th year.

willpower combined with hard work, dedication and a smart deal with the bank made the completion of the golf course possible and moved that rock, paving the way for another chapter in the history of Pocono Farms. Someone has to move the rocks.
Other important golf tournaments in the early 90s were developed and continued for more than 20 years (Joe Souso, and St. Anne’s). As the years passed the men’s and women’s locker rooms gave way to our beautiful Glacier Lake Grill Room. The carts and lawn mowers moved out from under the clubhouse and into their own building. The pool got heated and the Pocono Farms fitness center was built. The front nine seemed to spring up on want and willpower alone. The story of the back nine was slow and

Last year we had a great turn out and everyone was given a pedometer for participating. I have a bunch of those pedometers left as well as some other heart healthy prizes for all participants. I hate to admit it but before I moved to the Farms I never belonged to a gym or took any exercise classes. Shortly after we moved here, I was diagnosed with osteoporosis and knew I needed to move.

Originally, I joined the gym to lift weights and walk in bad weather but soon after, I started taking classes. It turns out I love yoga and stretching. I attend classes every week and if something interferes, I’m really sad. I know I am stronger and more flexible now. I have tried out some classes that didn’t work for me, but I like the instructors and have enjoyed getting to meet all the people in the classes. The first day in a new class sometimes seems a little daunting, but everyone was 10
who you know you can be. If you are looking to be happier in your job, figure the steps you can take every day to become that happier person. If you are looking to be a better communicator in your personal life then figure out ways to speak with meaning and authenticity. Contributions to this fund are made through various golf outings held throughout the golf season
Scholarships have also been awarded through funds set up memorializing past golf members
You do not have to be a golfer to submit an application.
There are eligibility requirements for the scholarship program. There is consideration given to academic record, extracurricular involvement, community or volunteer service, and your personal interview with the scholarship selection committee.
There are two (2) scholarships each worth $1,500. awarded each year.
