At the Board of Directors meeting held on October 26, 2018, the Board approved an increase to the 2019 common expense assessment (association dues) equal to the COLA (2.8%) released by the Social Security Administration on October 11, 2018. At 2.8%, it is the largest COLA increase in 7 years. According to information posted by AARP, the average social security retirement benefit will increase by $39.00 per month or roughly $468/year.

What does this mean for a Pocono Farms homeowner or property owner? For a DEPARTMENT HEADS homeowner, the 2019 dues General Manager David Timko 894-4435 ext. 100 dtimko@poconofarms.com will increase $38.00 per year Controller Thomas Franchetti or about $3.16 per month.

contract is expiring at the end of February 2019. We have already experienced a $3,000.00 per month increase for this service in the last six months of 2018. It is anticipated to increase another $1,500.00 to $2,000.00 per month after February of 2019. That’s $36,000.00 to $50,000.00 or up to $34.00 of the $38.00 COLA increase for the same service. In response to that, we are sending out an RFP (request for proposal) soliciting bids for that service going forward. We know that

there are only a few garbage haulers that can service Pocono Farms. However, we do need to do our due diligence in shopping for the best price for this service.

In closing, the COLA increase will be reflected in the 2019 annual billing statements that will be mailed out the first week of December.

Neighbors, As fall quickly charges closer to winter, I hope this finds you warm and snug in your homes.

I would like to thank everyone for your support while running for the Board of Directors.

I love this community and I look forward to serving it over the next few years. I have hit the ground running and would also like to thank the existing board for being so helpful and welcoming. I hope you all took the opportunity to review the Master Plan while it was up on the website. Thank you to all of those who sent in their comments during the public comment period. As Chair of the Communications / Long Range Planning Committee, our Master Plan is key to keeping this community a place we are all proud to live in.

While we did not get to enjoy much fall weather in the Farms this year (unless of course you like rain), we did host some wonderful events. Harvest Fest was well attended despite the iffy weather. Fall Trivia had the Lakeside Grill & Pub packed and a lot of fun was had by all. Murder Mystery night at the end of October was also hugely successful and a great night out. Several golf events were also held in October and November; hats off to the brave souls who played in mostly less than desirable weather. Keep in mind; even if you’re not a golf member, most events are open to residents, including great resident specials for golf, so keep them in mind for next season. Kyle and Kim always put on a fun day for our

golfers. As we get into the colder weather, more indoor events will be happening thanks to our Food and Beverage Director, Katrina, and our new Recreation Director, Nick.

Lastly, I am proud to have served on the Ad-Hoc Banquet Committee prior to being elected to the Board of Directors. If you haven’t checked out the newly renovated and decorated Lakeside Grill and Pub, please stop in. I think you will be pleased with the changes.

Having access to a wonderful, private, affordable, familyfriendly restaurant so close to home is a wonderful asset to our community.

Alone at my desk pen and pencil in hand, I’m writing citations as fast as I can.

Trash cans at the street and the grass much too tall, I try and I try to get to them all.

So fine them I do, week after week.

It’s not your money I want, but compliance I seek.

Yet over and over again and again, Compliance isn’t given so fines I must send.

I shout out this message to those far and near, I will say it clearly and pray that you hear.

If a bear leaves your garbage in complete disarray, Please pick it up or a fine you must pay.

Walk your dog on a leash, it’s the right thing to do And pick up after them so it’s not on my shoe.

Don’t play music to loudly and for heaven’s sake, Don’t fish from the golf course or bring pets to the lake.

REFUSE COLLECTION: Curbside pick-up of household trash and recycling is done on Mondays and Tuesdays beginning at 6:00am by County Waste.

County Waste will only pick up household trash and accepted recycling. If you have any other items to discard, please call them at 570-382-3304 to set up arrangements.

Major Holidays that will affect your collection days are: New Years Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, and Christmas. When those holidays fall on a Monday or Tuesday, garbage collection will shift by one day.

ANIMALS: Dogs must be leashed or on owner’s property at all times. Wildlife, such as deer and black bear, are common at Pocono Farms. We ask that you NOT FEED any wild animals.

Fun With Fitness

As we begin to say goodbye to 2018, I would like to reflect some on the past year. Finishing up my second full year as your Fitness Director has been amazing!! We were able to add four new treadmills to our cardio line up. We tried out some new classes and kept some old ones. We made it thru the summer rotating thru water aerobics instructors and we headed into the final season with new ideas and ways to improve upon what we already have going on.

Being the Fitness Director is so much more than creating classes, buying new equipment, finding instructors and keeping things moving in a positive direction.

Being a Fitness Director is about building relationships, listening to your members even though you may upset them with your decisions, being creative and willing to try new and different approaches. It’s about growing and learning in your profession to ensure the safety of your members and to continue to be on the up and up.

So many of you have supported me in my decisions and the changes I have tried to make, whether they were a success or not and I appreciate each and every one of you!

One particular member comes to mind, when I think about the encouragement given and the support to just keep moving forward. I remember when I first started here and in he walked with his faded purple yoga mat held together with an old blue and white stripped belt. He would set inside the doorway and into the locker room he would go. Reappearing, only a few short minutes later, grabbing his mat and heading into the fitness center for class but not before he would greet each one of us with his kind words and some sort of motivation for the day. As he began to roll out his faded purple mat each Thursday morning at 9 am, I began to learn about his own Yoga practice, his family whom he adored, and his volunteer work at a local hospital. As I rolled up my bright peach mat at the end of that class, he learned about my yoga practice, my boys, and my visions of where I wanted to take this fitness center. Soon he began to leave articles from the paper on my desk that contained my son’s name always underlined; fresh raspberries from his garden out back, and biscotti. Never forgetting to say good bye and leave us with some words of encouragement as he grabbed his faded rolled up purple mat and headed out the door.

Over the two years I have spent here and watched this man come and go, attend every single class he could, and even began to train to be able to walk the 2nd annual PFCCA 5K, I never heard a negative word come from his mouth. At the end of every class he would always say, “That was a great class kiddo! You are really coming along!” This man became an inspiration to me and a friend. Someone I have learned from and gained so much knowledge from and never had to leave the fitness center.

Last month, we had to say good bye to this gentleman. It was unexpected although we knew he was having some health issues. Even through those tough days, when he would come simply for chair yoga class, he had a smile on his face and some words of encouragement.

Always being sure to come in through the main doors so he could say hello to all of us and catch up with stories of family and friends before making his descent downstairs only to reappear an hour later with words of encouragement and his good byes.

As we begin to say good bye to 2018, a year that was full of change, encouragement, and growth, I leave you with this.

Much like the old faded purple mat carried in by my friend, Mr. Charley Day, that was rolled out once, twice, or even three times per week I understand that we find it hard to change to the bright peach mat. I understand that it’s tough to adjust and we don’t like the thought of saying good bye. I’m not asking you to say good bye to the staples that have worked in the fitness center for years. I am asking you to roll your mat out, no matter what color or shape it be, next to mine and join me. Embracing the change and building on the positive energy that is already present within the fitness center.

I look forward to meeting you on the mat and to my friend dear friend until we meet again on the mat.

CH A MPIONSHIP RECA P FOR 2018 By the time you read this article the 2018 golf season will have come to a close, and we will all be looking forward to 2019 from the comforts of our homes. We were fortunate I guess, that we got through the majority of the golf season without cancellation, due to the unusual amounts of precipitation, and with that I would like to congratulate Jeff Lesoine and his staff for the fantastic job this year making the course playable. Job well done Jeff.

As I do at the conclusion of the golf season, I would like to recognize all the champions from 2018.

Happy December Pocono Farms! Recreation has some great activities this month for the whole family to enjoy this holiday season.

First off is the CornHole tournament that will be held in the banquet room where teams of two will test their skills to see who the top team is! This event will take place Sunday, December 9th at 11am so our NFL fans can catch the game afterwards and enjoy the great specials our restaurant has to offer.

This month we also have our Santa Brunch on Sunday, December 16th where we will find out who has been naughty or nice this year! Please remember to sign up in advance so you don’t miss out on Santa festivities.

As always we have our monthly trivia with the famous Mike Elbert on Saturday, December 29th. Remember to bring your thinking caps and the ugliest sweater you own for your chance to win the prizes for the ugliest and most creative sweater of the night.

Last but not least as we come to the end of December we look back and remember what a great year 2018 was and welcome 2019 with our New Year’s Eve Bash on December 31st, with a live performance by Long Time Coming Band. Make sure to sign up early for our New Year’s Eve Bash so you have enough time to pick out the fanciest outfit you own and walk your way into the New Year with great friends and phenomenal food.
