As I pen this month’s article, I cannot believe that it is for the August Weathervane. The much anticipated days of summer are flying by. With that said, we are seeing a much better turnout at all of the Association sponsored events. That is a great thing. We are seeing more and more new faces at all of the events. That is what community living is all about, for us to put on these events to get our members out there enjoying themselves and meeting other neighbors. We pride ourselves on producing these events for that reason. A lot of time and effort is put into planning and implementing our events and activities. We anticipated a great 4th of July week of activities produced by our Food and Beverage Department in conjunction with our Recreation Department. We actually made it a 4 day celebration starting with the Sunset Seafood Fest with entertainment provided by the acoustic duo of Flying Blind. Followed by the Grill and Chill on the 4th with entertainment provided by Christian Porter. Followed by the Freedom Fest on the 5th with entertainment by Regina Sayles. Ending with the Happy Birthday America celebration on Saturday the 6th with our barbeque and a fantastic fireworks display. Let us not forget the Handicap Golf Tournament and our outdoor pool is open full time now.

In the past year we have completed a total renovation of the interior and outside dining space that is warm, and welcoming to diners of all ages. In June we began offering our newly expanded menu.

We feature a wide variety of appetizers, salads, sandwiches, hamburgers, pizzas, and entrees. We also have a children’s menu for our youngest of members! We also strive to accommodate those with special dietary restrictions and allergies, if you inform your server prior to ordering, or call ahead, we will adjust your meal as needed. On the go and too busy to dine in? Consider stopping on your way home to grab dinner for you and your family. Our entire menu is always available for take out! As we enter the last full month of summer and head into fall, we would again like to thank all of our residents for the outstanding support the Food and Beverage Department has received at our events in 2019.

From our winter events right through our most recent July Fourth week of celebration, we have seen sellout crowds! Both our Mother’s Day and Father’s Day brunches saw record breaking numbers! We have been so fortunate to host many of our returning regulars along with welcoming new faces to the community. As summer winds to an end, there are still many activities to participate in through the end of the year.

Prime rib night, seafood buffet, San Genero fest, Harvestfest, Murder Mystery Night, Children’s Halloween Party, Member Holiday Party and Brunch with Santa, just to name a few. August is here! Summer is in full bloom and we had another Big 4th of July celebration logged into the record books, and I believe it was a good one. I am happy to report that I have been writing fewer high grass fines, which is a good thing.

Now of course there are still the habitual offenders, but it has been better and that is positive.

There have been more tree and building permits issued to this point than ever before in my tenure here. This is another positive thing, meaning people are cleaning up and improving their properties, which translates to a better Pocono Farms for all of us!

Also, I am happy to say I have had fewer noise complaints.

This is another positive thing. We can have parties and other festivities without disturbing those around us. I also want to thank everyone who took my advice from June’s article and behaved this year by not shooting off fireworks.

On a different note, last month I was approached by a resident who told me of a conversation they had with another resident who had described me as, and I quote, “The Devil”. I asked why was I considered Satan to this person and I was told because of fines I had issued to them.

Now to be fair I have had my girlfriend refer to me that way before (even though I think I am quite angelic), but never a homeowner. I suppose I should apologize to the unnamed resident who felt that way because truth be told, I do not enjoy giving fines to anyone. I wish I never had to, but I do. I bear no ill will to anyone, I only seek one thing, compliance of the By-laws. Simply for everyone to follow the rules set forth in our Building and Administrative codes, nothing more.

I guess to some it may seem that over my door it reads “Abandon Hope All Ye Who Enter Here” but I assure you it does not. I have in the past, continue to, and always will listen to any and every explanation given as to why something was not in compliance. If warranted I will reduce or remove a fine. If not, then unfortunately, the fine must stay.

As I begin this monthly report from the Board of Directors, summer is finally upon us, the skies have been blue, the temperatures warm, and our busiest season has begun, including final preparations for our busy 4th of July holiday weekend! This article is about reflection as I wind down my last month on the Board after 6 years (that is 72 months in case anyone is wondering!). The six years flew by. When I started on the Board, my children were 9 and 6, now Annmarie is 15 and entering her Sophomore year at Scranton Prep and Liam is 13 next week entering 8th Grade at PMWJHS. I am very proud of them, and I am very proud of myself and the years I have committed to Pocono Farms and the Board of Directors.

When I entered the Board in July 2013, I was naïve. I thought I understood how this community worked, and I had a vision of making it better. Together with my fellow Board Members and our Management Team I think we have improved things drastically over that 6-year span, and I also learned a lot. I have been our Community’s Treasurer for the past 5 years, when I started I could develop and manage a budget and was generally fiscally responsible. Today, I have a much greater understanding of how a Community Association is managed, and the financial complexities that have to be considered on a daily, weekly and monthly basis. I enjoyed my Fridays in the PFCCA Offices signing checks (bills, paychecks, etc.) and talking with the staff. Our staff is truly our greatest asset. I will miss those Fridays. Tom, Lisa and I were just talking about it this past Friday.

Some of the key things I have learned over my 6 year experience: (1) Our community is special, the people, our facilities, our surroundings, the beauty in all forms is just what I hoped for my family, (2) Our Management Team is exceptional! Every single one of them, and our community would not be what it is without their dedication and commitment to Pocono Farms, (3) The economy in northeast PA impacted Pocono Farms, it impacted everyone but we have worked tirelessly to improve our financial situation, and we are in a much better place today compared to when I joined the Board 6 years ago, (4) Our greatest assets are the people and our facilities, we should never forget that, (5) Our community, our Board of Directors, and our committees need people, caring, understanding and committed people who like me, want to make Pocono Farms the best that it can be, and finally, (6) In many aspects being a Board of Director is a thankless job, but I am so thankful and privileged for the opportunity to serve for you, our Pocono Farms.

Thank you for the wonderful opportunity and privilege, thank you for your respect and understanding, and most of all thank you to my fellow Board of Directors, Dave Timko, and our wonderful management team. I will miss my Fridays signing checks and attending Board Meetings, honestly, I will! All the best, peace & love, Collette.

Crime Watch Activity Report

Now that we are in August the complaints about weather are a faded memory. Now we are hoping the rain will be during the nights and August will last until the end of September. The Crime Watch volunteers continue on in good and bad weather, and hope they are making the Farms a little better than the norm. We learned in June, at our luncheon, a few things we have not heard before. The local police were questioned about their ability to cut down on speeding in the area. We were told a “box” is located on streets where speeding has been reported or observed. This “box” documents the speed and frequency in the area being monitored. For instance, speeds of eighty miles an hour have been noted on Echo Lake Road during night time hours. We have been told in the past, that many of the speeders that have been stopped in the Farms are people cutting through from Route 196 to get to Route 611. At the time of his talk, the officer said local police are still not able to use radar as a tool.

However, I read in July that the legislature has approved the use of radar for local police, so be careful. I am sure they will want to get some real results as soon as possible.

One of our driver’s frustrations is seeing the same properties week after week not complying with our rules of property care. Our code official gets the brunt of criticism because all reporting goes to him. He explains that he has rules to follow and things take time. The code official from Coolbaugh Township also spoke at the luncheon. He investigates complaints throughout the township. When our code official has a problem that also breaks township rules, he will contact the Coolbaugh official and see if the problem can be taken care of. The township official has the ability to ticket someone, and bring them to court if necessary. Most of us never knew this office existed. He also explained that his office also has limitations and will get frustrated when the problem cannot be solved quickly. Owners must be personally served, and in this area that is not always easy. As an example, many of you are aware of the house that was destroyed by fire on Mohawk a few years ago. The Farms and township have been working for several years to get this property cleaned up. The official said it is getting close, but he has had many obstacles to overcome to get it done.

We also found out that there is a “solid waste” official that has the power of a sheriff to arrest you and take you to jail. He was scheduled to speak to us, but was called away. Hopefully we will be able to get to hear from him next time. I think most of us felt better that, although the wheels turn slowly, there are people out there trying to take care of our concerns.

In May and June, our drivers spent 180 hours on the road.

We still have empty slots and there can never be too many volunteers. I am told when crime watch first started over twenty years ago, there were fifty volunteers. Now we have sixteen, and a lot more people live here now than did back then. A few hours a month is not too much to ask for your community.

Major Holidays that will affect your collection days are: New Years Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, and Christmas. When those holidays fall on a Tuesday, garbage collection will be on Wednesday.

ANIMALS: Dogs must be leashed or on owner’s property at all times. Wildlife, such as deer and black bear, are common at Pocono Farms. We ask that you NOT FEED any wild animals.

Rockin’ Recreation

I would like to start off by thanking everyone who helped out during our amazing 4th of July weekend. If it was not for our staff and volunteers, I would not be able to put on such a great show for the community. Moving forward into the month of August, we still have plenty of events going on for all ages in the community. To start off we have our famous trivia night with the everso charming Mike Elbert on August 2nd at 8pm. If interested, please sign up with Katrina for a night of fun and facts! Following our trivia night we will be hosting our annual Camp Out on August 3rd with tons of activities and family fun. If you are looking for something new to do with the family this is the event

to attend and enjoy some s’mores and a relaxing night on the beach. Moving forward to Saturday, August 17th from 12-2pm we will have a Back to School Pizza Party for all kids returning to school. Anyone who attends will receive a goody bag filled with school supplies to get them ready for the new year. It is that time of the year to start getting rid of a few things while the weather is still nice, so Pocono Farms will be organizing another community yard sale on August 24th and 25th.

Fun With Fitness

Exciting news in fitness this month! Our age requirement has been DROPPED; yes you read it correctly. We have dropped the age to join the fitness center to 13 years old. Of course, that comes with stipulations. However, I am so happy that we can allow our youth in the community to take advantage of our facility. So much thanks to the Board of Directors who supported the proposal and who have faith in Nick, our Recreation Director, and I to put together a fabulous instructional program to ensure the safety of our youth as well as ensure proper use of the facility.

I am also excited to tell you that our Summer Line Up classes are a HIT! Our Butts and Guts class is ever changing with the introduction to the new pieces of equipment available for use, such as the Battle Ropes, TRX trainers, Kettle Bells, sliding discs, and new TRX resistance bands. Water Aerobics is such a fun time bringing a whole new light to using the water as a tool in our fitness routines. I have paired up with Colleen to bring a little twist to our Friday Water Aerobics class so please come and check it out. Yoga on the Beach is always a great way to start your Saturday with the sun, sand, and relaxing sounds of nature. I invite you to come in to the fitness center with this article and try a Summer Line Up class on me! Water Aerobics is a free class so, no need to bring the article, just show up at the pool at 10 am with your ID badge and CURRENT 2019 sticker. I am in my office most days from 9 am until 3 pm. I hope to see you soon.
