CRUSIN’ THRO UGH THE FA RMS Greetings, fellow members of Pocono Farms Country Club! I hope you’re enjoying your summer so far, appreciating days without snow to shovel or ice to chip through. After spending a grueling 17 hours on 380 during the blizzard of 2018, my family and I wanted to get away. We were fortunate enough to take a cruise at the beginning of summer, enjoying a muchneeded vacation. This was my first cruise, and I have to say I am hooked. We cruised on Royal Caribbean’s Anthem of the Seas, which leaves from Port Liberty in Bayonne, New Jersey, only a two-hour drive away. What an experience! A beautiful ship, full of art and the majestic glory of the ocean. The food was delicious. The drinks were amazing. And there was always something to do, whether it was attending a fun, family event, seeing a show, swimming in the pool, or visiting a pristine beach on a Caribbean island. The ocean is beautiful, and very relaxing to watch, and to listen to the waves as the ship passes through. Vacations eventually end, of course, and after returning home in a state of neardepression at having to cook our own food and clean up after ourselves again,

I missed the Anthem and all its amenities. But as I mowed the lawn the day after our return, it struck me how lucky we are to live in the Farms. I’m not going to pretend we don’t all need some away-time, but consider how much of the cruising life is available right here where we live, in our own backyards. We have a wonderful restaurant where you can eat delicious food, and the staff takes as good care of you here, if not better, than on a cruise ship. Our bar serves amazing drinks, sometimes including tropical concoctions like rum punches. We have a wonderful pool, larger than the ship’s. We have our own beach, and while the water may not be body temperature, it’s still a nice place to hang out. The lake isn’t quite the same as an ocean, but I still enjoy watching the fountain. We have tennis courts, and by now, the new pickle ball courts. Have you tried that yet? I had to look it up to find out what it was, but it sounds like a lot of fun!

On our island excursions I recall seeing a lizard and unfamiliar birds, but in my backyard, I’ve seen bear, fox, and my daughter is certain she saw a mountain lion. On the islands, I had to make sure I carried my passport. Here, it’s my trusty Pocono Farms badge.

And of course, we have an amazing golf course, which, along with our other amenities, helps raise our property values, as you will have seen at the presentation at the annual meeting. (You all attended, right?) So, when you come right down to it, living in the Farms is…like cruising on a ship, without the rocking of the boat. Ok, I know living up here isn’t quite the same as a cruise, or visiting a tropical island—but we do have a great deal going for us, and a wonderful, supportive community to share it with. Best of all, since we live in PFCC, our “Pocono Farms Vacation” never ends!

Crime Watch Activity Report BY RUSS KELLY

As with all our articles in the Weathervane, we are writing ahead and write of the things that have happened in May or June. We know July events such as the celebration of the 4th, and the use of fireworks in the neighborhoods always are of concern, and the community meeting to review the previous year, and plans for the coming year, but we can only guess what else is up in July. Hopefully the weather will be more cooperative than the spring and the pool and golf course will be full and all will be able to enjoy the facilities. Every June, the crime watch volunteers get together at the clubhouse for lunch, and invite a representative from the regional police to discuss the happenings in the area, and suggest ways we can continue to keep this community on their “least called from” list. All of their speakers over the years I have been attending; have said this community has a very low incident list compared to other communities in the area. One of the items stressed was that neighbors are often the best judge of concern in their neighborhoods. They often know when something just does not seem normal and should be encouraged to report things when concerned. Whether you call our security office or the regional police, one shouldn’t hesitate to speak up. Often people are reluctant to call 911 unless a serious emergency exists. The police have a “non-emergency” number that can be used for those things that don’t look right, but are not considered a right now emergency. For those of you that don’t have this number included in your cell phones or home phones, its 570-992-9911. Recently our drivers reported a car parked in an area that didn’t seem to belong there... They asked the occupants if they need help, but were told they were alright. Our driver thought they seemed awfully nervous and wondered if we should call it in. The non-emergency number was called; the dispatcher took down all the information and said they would ask the nearest patrol car to take a look. The speaker said he did not encourage our drivers to approach suspicious cars, but said we should report them when the situations arise. Drivers brought up various subjects. One most often concerned those in attendance, is the cars that speed through the farms and often ignore the stop signs at Kilmer and Fairway. We were told, if you can get specific times that speeding occurs daily, the police will have a patrol car monitor the area. He also said those that have been stopped in the past have not been local residents but drivers cutting through from Route 196 to get to Route 611. Another concern was how people waiting for the school buses parked so close to the intersection that often the bus would have difficulty making the turns. Our security officer said the first step is contacting the schools. While that may help initially, any of the drivers will tell you, it doesn’t last. Our hope is that getting the police to step in, the practice will stop. A problem that drivers report and are frustrated by is the trash that is left on properties. Often, trash is left by temporary renters and property owners are not always very responsive. We are restricted by private property rights, so even a volunteer cannot legally, so we are told, clean up the mess. It is a problem that our board has to deal with, and apparently has no easy answer. If you can help a neighbor or inform a renter how trash can be dealt with in the farms, this could only help the community as a whole. Now is the time to start volunteering for committees. The crime watch committee still has a few slots open. It’s an active committee that may encourage you to get involved with others. If you aren’t interested in the committees, maybe driving a few hours a month might interest you. Give it a try, you may enjoy it, and meet some nice people along the way. If you haven’t seen me lately it is because I have been put on the Greenpeace 10 most wanted list. Our 2018 2nd Annual PFCCA 5K Run/Walk is coming up quickly!! This year we have added a 1 mile kids Fun Run and a 1 mile walk. This year’s race will begin and end in the Fitness Center parking lot. Registration will take place in the Garden room and snacks and prizes will be provided after the race. We encourage you to come out and help support us as our proceeds this year will be going to Feeding Families Ministry. Can’t participate? No problem!! You can help support the race by becoming a sponsor. We have four different levels of sponsorship this year. Our “In It to Win It” sponsorship gets the most exposure for your business with your name on the back of the race shirt, on the sponsorship banner and on a mile marker poster. You will also receive two free race registrations at this top level sponsorship. Please stop into the Administration office and grab your registration form or sponsorship form TODAY!! Rockin’ Recreation BY MATT DeGEORGE, RECREATION DIRECTOR

Greetings from the Recreation Realm! How about the heat on our Fourth of July weekend? WOW! The activities were extremely exciting this year and we look to build upon our momentum next summer. ‘Happy Birthday America’ involved a great comedy show and magician, which were AWESOME! I just want to take the time to thank everyone on staff that helped put together another great event this summer. We all work extremely hard to ensure events run smoothly and the food was amazing! Being a huge food person myself, Katrina and her staff did an amazing job! We hope you enjoyed the events this summer as much as I have for my first year being your new Recreation Director. We have some exciting programs being applied for the first time this month! A couple of announcements: First, this month we will have our monthly recreation committee meeting at 7 p.m.

on Thursday, August 2nd. We would like to thank everyone who has been participating in our bocce programs. Wednesday and Friday night leagues have been a tremendous success this summer and I have witnessed extremely thrilling matches. Youth Bocce continues to grow and we have had an excellent group of kids this summer! Summer Camp went very well this summer and we will be having themes and Saturdays incorporated into our summer 2019 curriculum, so check it out next summer!

Flick N’ Float will be at the pool from 8-10 p.m. on Friday, August 17th with a rain date make-up of August 18th. We will be playing the movie ‘Swiss Family Robinson’ (original version.) Recreation has developed its very own group Face Book page! So please join to keep up to date with any announcements. We have also provided a new feature for text service to update anyone who participates in our programs. We will begin our first of many athletic instruction, leagues and tournaments. Some of these will be: Pickleball (doubles & singles), Tennis (doubles & singles), Corn-hole, 3 v 3 soccer, Wiffle-ball and a Community Flag Football game (5 v 5) which will take place around Thanksgiving. Please stay in touch for more on these athletic events!

Guitar Club will be beginning for those interested in learning a great instrument. Our own community member Bob Penett will be open to teach anyone who is interested. He will be flexible with your time as well! So, please notify us soon as possible to set-up some lessons. There will be a small fee associated with this. More Bocce BBQ, awards and playoffs will be held on details to come. Sunday, August 19th at the Bocce court. It will be starting at 12 p.m.

L A PS FOR CA NCER By Jen Pero The swim team hosted their annual Laps for Cancer in memory of Mary Lou DeCroti July 7th at the pool. It was another successful event raising over two thousand dollars for hospice services here in Monroe County. The event ran smoothly with the help of parents, swimmers, volunteers and coaches. State Representative Mario Scavello came to cheer on the swimmers as they swam as many laps as they could to raise money for such a great cause. The Pocono Farms Swim Team is dedicated to giving back to the community and helping all those affected by cancer.

We have ordered some cool new features for you to enjoy on the lake. Paddle Boarding and Paddle Boats will soon be here! Exciting stuff! Labor Day Weekend will be upcoming August 31stSeptember 2nd. Please come and join us for our list of events and our community carnival, which takes place Friday night! Finally, please come keep your community clean. We will hold an ‘End of Summer’ clean-up and Adopt-A-Spot program on Saturday, August 25th. This will begin at 9 a.m. and last until 12 p.m.
