During the next couple of months, not only will we be focusing on getting the amenities ready for summer, but we will also focus on getting the approved projects completed as well once the weather cooperates. In addition, there are two other very important items that we will be preparing for. The first one is the Golf Scholarship interviews and awards. Each year, the golf scholarship committee interviews many talented young adults who apply for these awards.

The application for these awards are provided to the PM West High School in October and are available on line. The biggest misconception is that you have to be a golfer to apply for these awards, which is not true. The fund itself has zero costs to the Association as it is strictly funded through golf events held at Pocono Farms each year, (the largest contributor to the fund is the Denny Pig Roast), and through various donations made by others in the community. To date, there has been over $40,000.00 awarded in scholarships to deserving high school seniors.

The second is the preparation for the Annual Meeting which is being held on Saturday, July 20, 2019 at 10 am at the Pocono Community Church. Please mark this date on your calendars. The annual meeting is an opportunity for your member elected Keith Torregrossa volunteer Board of Directors to give an overall update Of The Poconos to those present on the 1111 North Fifth Street status of the community, its highlights, and challenges.

As I begin this monthly report from the Board of Directors, I am hopeful that winter is coming to an end.

By publication time we should have the first signs of spring flowers and perhaps the golf course will be open or opening soon. Our winter months in Pocono Farms have been busy, but I think we all have spring on our minds! I know we should anticipate a busy spring season as we move into our busiest time of the year! Is the pool open yet?!

Brunch, our Golf Leagues should be starting up, plus there are new Fitness options and so much more. Katrina and Nick are working tirelessly to come up with new and improved programs for us to enjoy. It is time to wipe away those winter cobwebs and get out there, be social and have some fun!

The Board of Directors has been busy over the winter months preparing for an excellent 2019! You will continue to see some changes around our community, I am sure with the winter painting, landscaping, thaw our properties are going to need some cleaning structural improvements, and necessary updates. The objectives of this organization are to provide an opportunity for members to share social and educational experiences with their fellow residents; to promote good will and cooperation between the PFWC and other Pocono Farms organizations; and to contribute to the civic and social welfare of the surrounding communities.

I’ve been patrolling during these winters days It would be nice and warm if I had my way Pocono Farms Dreaming on such a winter’s day.

Waiting for the warmth to come our way I get down on my knees and to the golf gods I pray Please melt this snow so some rounds we can play Pocono Farms Dreaming on such a winter’s day.

Now that the reverie is over, we can start looking to the spring, sunshine, warmer weather. Thank you Jesus. As always, take care of your yard work. I promise your hard work will pay off. How you ask? Simply, with all of the April rain we generally get, once you clear your drains, culverts and swales all that water will freely flow to its intended locations.

Fundraisers are planned throughout the summer months to give to worthwhile charities and non-profit organizations in our community and within our county.

The Pocono Farms Women’s Club meets the second Wednesday of the month at noon in the Lakeside Grill & Pub. We enjoy meeting our friends and neighbors while having lunch. Our Program Director always has interesting and educational programs planned.

The Board has created an email address that residents may use to submit comments, questions, and suggestions. Valid emails, must include the full name and Pocono Farms address of the sender. Which will then be forwarded to a current board member. Responses to emails will be sent directly to the sender and periodically published in the Weathervane or included in regular email blasts. Publication of submitted questions and answers will help you and your fellow community members stay current with what is happening within the community. Crime Watch Activity Report

Looking at the snow falling while thinking about the April edition is a bittersweet moment.

Sweet, because I am looking ahead to sunshine, light jackets and golf. Bitter, only that remembering last March we had the bulk of our winter’s snow that month. Hopefully, April will return to normal and mix sunshine with the rain, and a return to normal rainfall.

As is normal for this time of year, we experience a drop off in patrol hours due to the ice, snow and escapes for a week or two to the sunshine states. By April, generally we begin to increase hours, and will soon have the snowbirds back at the Farms.

Thankfully, the past months (to date) have not provided any reportable crimes and with the covering of snow, most reportable rule violations have fallen to a minimum.

BUILDING REGULATIONS: Permits are required from the township and from PFCCA. Please check with the office (570-894-4435) as to your specific needs.

During this quiet period it may be well to look into the problems that never go away, and that is the constant threat of internet and phone scams that have no season. Several years ago I fell into an internet scam that would easily trap the less sophisticated computer user. Once I realized what happened, and I got over the embarrassment of being duped, I discussed this with others, and found several people fell into the same trap, including a few accomplished computer users.

It was a window that popped up saying Microsoft had detected a virus and if you shut the computer off, it would be installed. A number for verification of the message was given, and when I called, and was skeptical, I was told by Microsoft that it was up to me what I did, they were only sending a warning. That hooked me and I was soon buying added protection.

Ironically, the company did actually provide protection, but did I really need more than I have had for years. Now that I am paranoid, I occasionally look into other reported scams. While the list seems to be endless I thought a few might be worth mentioning.

REFUSE COLLECTION: Curbside pick-up of household trash and recycling is done on Tuesdays beginning at 6:00am. County Waste picks up household trash and accepted recycling. If you have any other items to discard, please call them at 570-382-3304 to set up arrangements.

I have heard for years that many a virus is included in some of the internet games that are available. But one I had not heard was that e-mails that come from a bank, a government agency a commercial institution, or a company should be verified. On mobile phones many links are included in a text message and often a malicious code is inserted into apps like “what’s app and telegram”. Not being a smartphone user, I was curious what one could do to protect one’s phone, I was knocked out by the steps you would have to go through to be really protected. I think my flip phone will have to do until I can no longer replace it. To deal with “robo” calls, the solution is easy, just hang up. I have got that one down pat.

February’s patrol hours were down to about sixty, but we expect to pick up as the weather gets better. Now might be a good time for you to try out a few hours a month. Major Holidays that will affect your collection days are: New Years Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, and Christmas. When those holidays fall on a Tuesday, garbage collection will shift by one day.

ANIMALS: Dogs must be leashed or on owner’s property at all times. Wildlife, such as deer and black bear, are common at Pocono Farms. We ask that you NOT FEED any wild animals.

I am so excited to tell you about all the fun new accessories that have arrived in the fitness center!! We now have four TRX full body workout stations located in the classroom. They are open for member use when the classroom is not being occupied by a scheduled class. I am planning to run an intro to TRX workshop in May. So please look for details on how to sign up!! We have also added a TRX Battle Rope along with two new Kettlebell sets. Those are also in the classroom for member use when the classroom is not being occupied by a scheduled class.

The battle rope is a great way to get the heart pumping!! They are fun and easy to use. I will be introducing workshops for both the Kettlebells and the Battle Rope in May as well.

I am excited to tell you that Abby Denny will be joining us again this summer for Yoga on the Beach. Abby is a great asset to our summer instructor line up and I love all that she has to offer us. We are working on bringing you another workshop as well. I have ordered some yoga accessories to make our yoga practices a bit more comfortable.

Chair Yoga will remain upstairs as Mommy and Me has moved into the Garden View room.

Water Aerobics is scheduled to begin in June again this year and it looks like yours truly will be your instructor. I am excited to be able to bring you a splish-splashing fun filled class with great music to keep us moving and grooving.

Spring is a time the embrace to beauty of change and enjoy the colors as the flowers bloom and the trees bud. I encourage you to stop in and check out the Fitness Center and all we have to offer. We have a variety of classes and are looking to add more to the lineup as the summer season begins.

I want to thank everyone for coming out to our great St. Patrick’s Day event. A special thanks for the girls from the Gallagher School of Dance for an excellent performance.

Changes are in the air with everything we do now a days.

No one likes changes, but for the most part changes are needed and done for the better. Golf is no different. For the last 10 years golf had been promoting the slogan “while we are young”. This comment is used to speed up play. It is no secret that golf takes a substantial amount of time.

On average it takes about 4 hours to play 18 holes. We have all been guilty of slow play at one time or another in the amount of time to play 18 holes. Sometimes slow play comes from taking too long to hit a shot. The truth is, slow play is mostly a result from bad golf shots and rulings on the course. I am not preaching that it is the only cause of slow play. Golfers still need to play ready golf. They need to be prepared to hit the golf ball before it is their time to hit.

For 2019 the rules of golf that we have lived by and learned have now changed. In all, the rules book has been consolidated from 34 rules to 24. There’s a lot to consider. Some of these changes might require a change in thinking on the part of players. If you are planning to play competitive golf, you should grab a copy of the new rules.

Please take a look at a few of the changes we will be seeing in 2019 and for many years to come.

To improve pace of play, golfers now have just three minutes to search for a missing ball rather than five. Admit it, if you hadn’t found it in three minutes, you weren’t finding it anyway.

The process for dropping a ball back in play is revamped in the new rules. Instead of letting go from shoulder height, players will drop from around their knee. This is a compromise from an original proposal that would have let golfers drop from just inches above the ground. To preserve some randomness with the drop, officials went with knee height instead. Why change at all? Primarily to speed up play by increasing the chances your ball stays within the twoclub-length drop area on the first try.

Another nod to common sense eliminates a penalty for hitting a flagstick left in the hole while putting on a green.

Taking the flagstick out of the cup and placing it back in the cup, in flagsticks can often cause undue delay in the round, and the flagstick is as likely to keep your ball out of the cup as it would help it fall in.

Golfers often complained about the silliness of letting players fix a ball mark on the green, but not a spike mark.

What’s the difference? With no good answer, officials now will let you fix everything without a penalty.You can also touch the line of your putt with your hand or club so long as you’re not improving it.

A double hit is almost always accidental, and the outcome so random as to hardly be beneficial. So golfers are now spared the ignominy of adding a penalty for hitting a ball twice with one swing. It counts as only one stroke.

These are only a few changes for golf in 2019. Hopefully this will speed up play and bring even more enjoyment back to the game of golf. Golfers, please make a point to read the new rules. April is a month filled with spring events. First, Pocono Farms will be hosting a Garden Guru Event where you will have the opportunity to plant and design your own flower pot in order to get ready for the spring season.

This event will take place inside the Lakeside Grill and Pub where we can laugh, grow, and maybe even wet our plant. Then we have our Easter events. On April 13th in the Garden View Room we will have egg coloring for the children, sign-up required at the Administration Office.

Following our egg coloring event is this year’s Bunny Brunch and egg hunt on Sunday April 14th. This year we will have our classic egg hunt with nut-free candy and a chance to win a special prize if you find the right egg. To finish the month of April, we will be conducting our Community Clean-up Day on Saturday April 27th.

Sign up at the Administration Office, please list which area you would like to clean up in the community. We will meet in the Garden View room
