After the Annual Meeting each year, there seems to be a renewed sense in community and getting involved. I would like to harness that enthusiasm and encourage members to get involved in one of our many committees here at Pocono Farms.

In order to establish a committee, there needs to be a minimum of 3 up to 7 member to form a committee. The committees typically meet once a month on a Friday/Saturday/Sunday to accommodate the schedules of those who work, are only here on weekends/holidays, or have other commitments midweek. The meetings only last for an hour.

Committees also provide a vital role, not only to the community by lending your time, talent and skills, but also to the Board. Committees provide review of existing guidelines and will research specific topics and report their findings back to the Board. With 10 standing committees and other Ad-Hoc committees appointed as needed, this potentially leads to a lot of good reviews, suggestions, and thoughts that could be implemented over time for the betterment of the community as a whole.

Although the Board appointed a group of applicants to various committees at the August 24th Board meeting, there are still openings on various committees. If the committee of choice is filled, the Board will recommend another committee to you based on your skills or interest level.

As you read this, we will be approaching the end of our summer season. It has been a great success with many new programs for “kids” of all ages!!

One that stood out to me was the overnight camp out on the beach that our Recreation Director Joe organized. I happened to be on the beach that evening and counted no fewer than 15 tents of all sizes and numerous family members enjoying our beach and lake along with several activities for the kids. It was by any measure a great success and very family oriented. Our staff has come up with more and more of these types of activities for all ages that enhances the value of living in Pocono Farms. We are also experiencing an increase in activity in our restaurant, whether it

be the monthly live music nights in the Glacier Lake Grill and Pub or the various “special” nights that Katrina has put together. These have been a success and I know more are planned. To those of you who expressed your past concerns regarding the restaurant at our annual meeting, I encourage you to give it another try. I believe with a new chef and additional activities you will have a positive experience. Please call ahead for reservations so the staff is prepared to give you the best service possible.

Finally, we are beginning to see a positive trend in home sales both in numbers and price. Since we have our own realty company that both sells and rents homes we track this information closely and I am happy to report improvement in this area. That fact combined with the esthetic improvements we have made in and around the Clubhouse means your property is more valuable today than it was several years ago which I know is important to all of us.

Crime Watch Activity Report

Hello everyone, it has been a busy summer. I have issued over 100 permits so far this season, but I still get questions every week about “am I allowed to do this”, or “do I need a permit for this”. So this article is to help you with whether you need a permit or not.

First off the questions you have been asking are good. Play it safe and ask, don’t just go ahead and do something. Just stop by or call the admin office or myself like you have been doing and we can give you the proper answer. Basically it comes down to this, if you need to repair something you generally don’t need a permit. If you are replacing something then you generally will need a permit.

An example would be: if you need to fix a few shingles on your roof, then no permit is needed. If you need to replace the roof, then yes a permit is required. If you are touching up the paint trim on your window or door frames, then no. If you are painting the whole house, then yes. Some permits have a fee associated with them, while others do not. Again we will give you the correct answer as to which ones they are. Some permits such as a shed or deck actually require a permit from the township as well as one from us. It’s always better to be safe than sorry and we are always here to help. I hope this helps those of you who are checking items off their honey do list. As always should you have questions or concerns just call or stop by, my door is always open.

I’m happy to report that during the month of July there were no driver reports of break-ins or suspicious activity here at The Farms. While this makes us all feel comfortable in our surroundings, as those of us old enough to remember only Lamont Cranston knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men. An open door and a broken window are reported, and we assume our safety director will make a phone call to an owner to see if they are aware of the situation. This usually turns out okay, but once in a while, usually a part time or non-resident owner will make the trip to inspect the problem.

When September rolls around we become more aware that schools are opening and buses will be running through our local streets. This means people picking up kids at the bus stop shouldn’t get too close to the intersection and make turning more difficult for buses or other vehicles. Surprisingly, not all drivers stop when kids are getting into or off the bus. Our drivers are asked to be around the unloading areas when it is possible. Parents have told our drivers of the concern they have about vehicles not stopping when the bus is unloading.

Even though the summer is fading, the grass continues to grow. I don’t know if this year is worse than previous years, but our drivers are convinced that not keeping up with lawns this year seems one of the banner years. We can blame it on a rainy summer or absentee landlords if we like, but I don’t know if that can explain it. Finding an hour or so a week to keep the property in shape shouldn’t be too much of a burden.

Continuing citing some of the rules we sign on for when moving into The Farms, the posting of signs is restricted. No “for sale” or “sold” signs are to be displayed on a property. Several real estate signs were reported this past year. Our code official was notified and he contacted the named agency about removal.

During the month of July, volunteers patrolled for ninety four hours. There are still a number of hours that are not being covered on a daily basis. We still would like to have more volunteers join the group and help cover as many hours and areas as possible. Monday Morning Breakfast Club

With the change of season I feel optimistic knowing that some of the best conditions for golf are still ahead of us. The course this year was in excellent shape due to the fine work performed by our golf course maintenance crew under the supervision of our head greens keeper Jeff Lesoine. At one point during the season, I began to notice changes along the sides of some of the fairways that improved playability as well as helped to find the ball that just rolled a little to far and into the brush. As time went on I began

seeing more and more of these improved playing areas pop up on various holes along the course.

The improvements included brush removed, fallen tree limbs chipped, trees being removed and overhanging branches and trees trimmed.

Knowing the amount of time it takes to just do the regular maintenance on the course I wondered if the maintenance crew was getting some assistance from some of the local forest gnomes for they could not have done this on their own.

At last the truth was revealed and now the secret is out. With the course being closed until 10am on Monday mornings a few like minded and ambitious members of our community began what is now know as the “Monday Morning Breakfast Club”. Their objective is to clear the brush and debris as well as overhanging branches from as many holes as possible to increase playability as well as pace of play.

So far they have worked a on 10 different holes. I know from experience that it has saved me a few lost balls as well as having a shot from an area that in the past you did not.

Volunteers include John & Joan Antola, Frank Milano, Frank DeBrincat, Bob Denny, Rodger Spear, Stan Cuneo, Mike Gaudette, and Harry Hamill. We have coordinated our effort with the guidance and approval of course superintendent Jeff Lesoine, head golf professional Kyle Monahan, and the golf committee.

My hat is off to these civic minded individuals who

All were very successful and I am working on fitting them into the regular schedule of classes. Watch for email updates on the days and times.

Planning our 5k event provided me with the opportunity to work with Katrina in planning the buffet menu and reaching out to her for ideas on the flyers and sponsorship levels. Sometimes being the new kid on the block can be a bit difficult but I must say that the teamwork here at PFCCA is AWESOME!!! This summer was a super success and I hope that our work together continues thru the fall and winter seasons.

Speaking of the 5k, please don’t forget to join us Sunday, September 10, 2017 for the PFCCA 5k fun run/walk. All net proceeds are going to support the Pocono Mountain Ecumenical Hunger Ministry.

If you didn’t get to pre-register, don’t worry it’s not too late!!! Join us at the beach at 9am and get yourself registered. The race starts promptly at 11 am. Following the race we are joining forces with Katrina behind the Clubhouse for raffles, awards and a buffet. There will also be a 50/50 to benefit the Flight 93 Memorial.

I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who makes our recreation program such a huge success! Without the help of Katrina Weithman, our Food and Beverage Director, our programs would not be as successful as they are. Not only do she and her team take care of all of the food and beverages for indoor and outdoor events, they also are a big part of the entertainment that is provided. We also have an amazing recreation committee; Vanessa Stultz, Dianne McCormick, Carol McDonnell, Fred Rimmer, Gary Fennell and AnnMarie Toto who have been contributing so much support for the recreation program. Special thanks to Brian Cavanaugh, the former board

liaison, for all of his help on the committee with the planning and execution of the last three Camp Outs on the Beach. Please welcome Frank DeBrincat, our new board liaison, to the recreation committee!

Please keep in mind that even though we are limited at times, the recreation team is fully committed to providing as many activities as possible for all ages of the community. If anyone would like to help, volunteer for an event, and/or have any suggestions, please let me know.

Here are some highlights of the events coming up in September. We kick off the month with the Labor Day Festivities. Friday night is our Carnival Night in the banquet room from 6pm-9pm. All day Saturday will be filled with fun activities for the kids. There will also be a petting zoo and barbeque. Sunday is our Rodeo Night on the beach featuring a mechanical bull, live entertainment, and of course lots of food and drinks. Please make your reservations with Katrina for this event. The following weekend, Friday the 8th, we have another Spirited Art night which will be held in the banquet room. This time we will be painting on a wooden plank. On Saturday the 9th there will be a Learn to Dance Social Party. Three lessons will be offered and a light fare buffet included. To wrap up the weekend, on Sunday the 10th, we are hosting the Pocono Farms 5K event. This event supports the local food pantry – please come out and support a great cause! Stay tuned for a new event this month, the San Gennaro Feast which will offer great Italian food and activities. Lastly, ending out the month will be a trip to Bethlehem for the Celtic Fest.

A reminder that our bowling league will begin in early October so keep your eyes out for the flyer. Any newcomers are welcome, the more teams the better! Please contact me for more information and stay tuned for more updates in the next Weathervane!

Round by Round

BY KYLE MONAHAN Tournament golf is an incredible part of this game.

Friendly competition, grudge matches, stress, frustration, excitement and just plain ol’ torture.

These are many aspects of what tournaments can bring to both competitors and staff. I was asked to talk about tournaments from my side of the counter.

Since there are two parts to every event, I figured I would talk about both sides.

Prepping for a tournament is almost as important as the event itself. As a player, this is when you get mentally prepared. Different formats require different mind-sets. When you’re playing in a match play event -- meaning two competitors playing hole by hole – you have the ability to play a bit more aggressively. Making a big number on a hole is not as punishing. In a medal play event -- where everything needs to be holed out and total score of the round counts – you may not be able to play as aggressively. Knowing your format prior to the event helps you get in the proper mind-set leading up to the first tee shot.

On the other side of the counter, the professional must know the formats to figure out what kind of setup he needs to run a successful event. Creating matches for a match play event can be very difficult as well as stressful. Last-minute changes -- whether it’s an additional player or someone drops out – means all of the pairings, and perhaps even flights, must be changed. Matches are normally created based on handicap. This allows for fair matches.

After all players have signed up for a match play event, the pro shop staff begins to build the flights.

This task is challenging because we want to create flights that are fair for all players.

Creating the flights is just the start of a long process.

The next steps include: •

Creating tee times

•

Finalizing rules sheets

•

Setting up and printing out scorecards

•

Publishing tee times

•

Creating score sheets

•

Marking the hazards on the course

•

Making sure the course has no issues due to weather or other reasons

•

Figuring out pin placements, posting them in the computer’s tournament software, and printing out pin placement sheets

•

Making sure the superintendant knows times of events or any other needs for the event

And this is just a partial list. Some events have tee gifts for each participant. This can be a huge chore on its own. This starts with a budget and trying to come up with something that’s useful as well as different from previous years.

The hardest part of getting ready for a tournament for a player is preparing mentally. Golf is a mind game. Confidence goes a long way, as we all know.

A smart golfer always does well. On the other side, the hardest part is change: a last-minute addition, a last-minute withdrawal, or even some unwanted weather. As a professional, all I can say is that my staff and I strive for a smooth, enjoyable tournament that keeps golfers coming back more and more.
