For the last 17 years, the Pocono Farms Ladies Golf Association has sponsored a charitable tournament to eliminate breast cancer. The tradition continued on August 19, 2014 as more than 50 men and women played a golf scramble followed by lunch. Money was raised by purchasing raffle tickets and a 50/50 contest. Many bought hole or card sponsorships. Over $4,000 was donated to Play for P.I.N.K. Play for P.I.N.K. is currently funding 16 research projects including Mayo Clinic, Memorial Sloane Kettering, University of Pennsylvania, Rutgers Cancer Institute of N.J., etc. We are grateful to all the golfers and residents who gave so generously. Thank you, it was a fun day!

This will be my last article as a Board member. I am in the final year of my three year term. I have served nine out of the last ten years and need a rest. Three of those years I had the privilege of serving as the President of the Board. There were many interesting, frustrating and rewarding times.

The highlights in my mind were: The selling of the water company. We as an Association would be bankrupt had we not sold and were forced to provide the upgrades necessary to continue operating.

The building of the new Community/Fitness Center. I marvel at the numerous and varied members taking advantage of this the newest amenity- from the ancient like myself to teenagers.

As promised it is self sustaining. Forming the Pocono Farms Realty Company and starting operations. It is already producing revenue for our Association.

The upgrades at the pool- the new fiberglass liner as well as the new concrete apron and the upgrade of the shower and children’s area.

The drainage installed on the Golf course greens.

The new Community Garden.

Perhaps the best of all was the hiring of our General Manager Dave Timko which was followed by elevating both Adam Herman to head of overall maintenance and Lorraine Daviduk to Accounting/

Office Manager; hiring Katrina Weithman, Director of Food and Beverage, Joe Sprovkin, Recreational Director and Artie Furman Director of Security. Through all this Rich Savage continued to serve admirably as Building Coordinator & Compliance Director. I’m sure the addition of Kyle Monahan as our Golf Pro will continue the positive trend in our Managers.

I am proud to have had the opportunity to serve with all of my fellow Board Members and the above mentioned Managers and their staffs. This is a great community to live and raise a family in.

I ask all of the members to get involved either running for the Board, joining a committee or just coming out to enjoy some of the finest amenities to be found in the Poconos.

I want to thank all of you for supporting me over these past ten years.

Crime Watch Activity Report

The Labor Day weekend has come and gone.

It is now called the unofficial end of summer.

The children have returned to the classrooms.

Be careful driving, especially in the morning and afternoons when they are running to and waiting at the school bus stops. NOTE to the parents, caution your children not to walk down the middle of the road (yellow line ) on the way home from the bus stop. It could be dangerous.

During the month our 18 drivers drove around the community for 104 hours, making our presence known in order to keep crime here in Pocono Farms at a minimum. In the next few months our snow birds will be heading south and we could use some help. If you can spare some time to join us, leave your name and telephone number at the office and one of our committee members will call you. Fall in the Poconos is a beautiful time of the year. Get out there and enjoy it.

You answer and the person on the other end says the following: This is the front desk. When checking in, we came across a problem with your charge card information. Please re-read me your credit card number and verify the last 3 digit numbers on the reverse side of your charge card.

Hotel Credit Card Scam: You arrive at your hotel and check in at the front desk. You give the front

If you ever encounter this scenario, tell the caller that you will be down to the front desk to clear up any problems. Then go to the front desk and ask if there is a problem. If there is none, inform the manager of the hotel that someone tried to scam you of your credit card information, acting like a front desk employee.

Not thinking anything is wrong, since the call came from the front desk, you oblige. But actually, it is a scam by someone calling from outside the hotel. They have asked for a random room number, then ask you for your credit card information.

They sound so professional, that you think you are talking to the front desk.

Labor Day weekend was a success. After a slow start on Saturday morning, the members and their families came out in force to enjoy the events of the weekend. Joe and his recreation staff had plenty of activities to participate in that included the petting zoo, pony rides, and crafts. The food and beverage operations saw a fair amount of business over the weekend, even though we had to move the Sunday evening event inside.

It was a good summer by all standards even though the typical summer heat did not arrive until the last week before Labor Day weekend and the following week. We experienced a lot of participation throughout the summer at the scheduled member events and at the amenities.

Just because the calendar says summer is over does not mean that there is nothing to do. Our Recreation/Activities Director still has events planned through the end of the year for all ages.

Please make sure you check your emails or refer to the website or the Weathervane for all that is planned. Due to the success of our events and activities, we usually ask that you make reservations so that we may accommodate as many members as possible. We ask that you sign up early to secure your spot at these events and it also helps us in planning to make sure we have enough supplies to ensure a great event.

Our management team will be working together to provide our members many opportunities to recreate and socialize right through the Holidays at the end of the year. Watch your emails and check the website for future announcements. Hope to see you at one or more of the events!!!

The Pocono Farms Women’s Club meets the second Wednesday of the month at noon time in the Club House Restaurant, Grill Room. We enjoy meeting our friend and neighbors while having lunch. Our Program Directors always has an interesting and educational program planned.

Come join us! We would love to have you. Call the Club House and let them know you will be joining us for lunch.

RECREATION EVENTS

One of two field trips, this one was a hike at Dingmans Falls.

A project completed by all the participants of this summer’s Arts & Craft Camp.

Nature Campers attended a 2nd field trip to Kittatinny Point at Delaware Water Gap.

SportsCamp

Brody Carlson is one of our young residents who participated in Junior Golf this summer.

This program is open to all families in Pocono Farms and experience or ownership of golf clubs is not necessary. Children from ages 6 to 17 are eligible. In the words of Brody’s dad, Neil: “Pocono Farms Junior golf was exceptional this year. It is a positive learning environment for the young golfers in our community. It has been a great outlet to learn and improve their golf skills through instruction, practice, and a variety of activities. In an effort to provide the best golf experience for our junior golfers, both Chach Kyle and Coach Matt have designed several fun and creative learning opportunities. Their focus has been on the fundamentals of the game, both on the practice tee and the golf course.” As our Pro Kyle said, “these are our future Pocono Farms golfers.”

This was a fabulous season for the Bocce league which started the end of May and ended in August.

There were ten teams of 4 who competed this season with five teams playing on Wednesday night and five teams playing on Friday late afternoon. This is a fun and friendly experience and no experience is necessary. There is a lot of laughter and camaraderie between all the teams and Marilyn Fritz enjoys it so much that she played on one team on Wednesday and another on Fridays. On Wednesday nights, Frank Debrincat provided music and frequently doing the barbecuing along with acting as the referee. The playoffs at the end of the season was a fabulous afternoon for both players and spectators as well.

Well, we are finishing up a great 2014 golf season. We have had great participation in our events and the weather to go with it. We still have some time left, so get out and enjoy the great golf course we have here at Pocono Farms Country Club.

Congratulations to our Club Champions, Don Cain and AJ Oravec, and our Senior Club Champions, Tim Holland and AJ Oravec.

We also completed the year with our Ryder Cup. Participants are made up of highest point earners from event participation. Congratulations to Matt and the RED team for a fine display of competitive golf and perseverance over a tough BLUE team. Sorry Kyle, maybe next year as you gain more experience.

I would like to welcome Shane Falls to the Golf Committee, and thank Linda Penett for all the work she’s done for us during her time on the Committee.

We had a lot of members join our August meeting to share thoughts and concerns. I welcome all of you to join us once a month and share your thoughts to help us to continue our efforts to make Pocono Farms a quality golf experience on the course and in our events. Please check the Weathervane or the Pocono Farms website for meeting times and dates.
