Much like one of my rounds of golf, the world of golf experienced its own ups and downs during the last week of September into the first few days of October. The “KING” – Arnold Palmer was laid to rest. His list of accomplishments are too many to mention. However, the lives he touched and influenced are probably more immeasurable. From all accounts, he was a true gentlemen and a fantastic ambassador of the game of golf. Yes, he was a competitor, but was always gracious in defeat.

I never had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Palmer personally. I can, however, draw some connections. For one, we are both from Western PA. Actually, our hometowns were about 20 miles apart. My first job after graduating from Slippery Rock University was at the Shawnee Inn & Golf Resort. There, the halls were adorned with various golf pictures, including those of Mr. Palmer in a barber’s chair (the Inn actually had a barber shop as many of the older Inns did back then), along with Mr. Palmer playing golf with Jackie Gleason, who also frequented the Inn. Mr. Palmer spent a fair amount of time in Shawnee during the 50’s and 60’s.

When my wife and I started looking for a house to settle into around Shawnee, we found a nice ranch home, a little off the beaten path. It too had pictures and calendars hung throughout of Mr. Palmer. What is the significance of that?

The home we were about to purchase was the summer home of the Walzer’s. As in the parents of Winnie “Walzer” Palmer – Arnold’s first wife

of 45 years! Winnie and Arnold first met in Shawnee. Although not affirmed, but assumed, I would venture to say that Arnold Palmer once walked on the same floors that my family and I currently walk on. I think that is pretty cool.

And yes, I was given one of those calendars when my wife and I purchased the home in 1994.

It is a very small world we live in. So much so that Winnie’s brother stopped by the house in mid September as he was passing through Shawnee just to say hello as he always does when visiting. I asked how Arnie was and he told me at that time he was not feeling well.

Who would have known that within a few weeks, he would pass?

As many of you know, the Ryder Cup matches were held the first few days of October. Only a few days after Arnold’s passing. I can only imagine that the US Team used this as motivation to bring the Ryder Cup back to the States. There was some spectacular golf played during those matches by both teams. This was definitely an “up” moment for the US team and golf enthusiasts across the country.

Although there are a lot of people saddened by the passing of Mr. Arnold Palmer, including myself, the “LEGACY” that was left behind serves as an example to many of the true impact THE KING had on the many lives he touched in some way – RIP Mr. Palmer

Women’s Club News BY joan schipper, secretary

The Women’s Club meeting was held Wednesday, September 14, 2016. The hostesses were Daisy Aranda and Barbara Zimmerman.

September is the month for the installation of the Officers for 2016 & 2017. Dorothy Sirolly, as Chairman of the Nominating Committee performed the installation of officers. They will assume their duties at the close of this meeting. The new board is as follows: President, Marilou Preus, First Vice-President (Ways & Means), Tressa Delli-Santi, Second Vice-President (Program Committee), June Centonze, Third VicePresident (Membership Chairman), Lynn Fardella, Secretary, Joan Schipper, Treasurer, Jane Cilurso.

Dorothy Sirolly, a member of the League of Women Voters, informed us that Voter Registration Forms need to be submitted by October 11, for the November 2016 Presidential election. This form, along with an Absentee Ballot Form, can be obtained in David Parker, State Representative’s office in Coolbaugh Township Municipal building and at the library. Residents of Pocono Farms; according to their house location, vote either at the Tobyhanna Coolbaugh Township Fire House on Laurel Drive or at the Pocono Mountain Public Library on Route 611.

Crime Watch Activity Report

The leaves have turned and you can see and hear the honks of the Canadian geese heading south.

Closer to the ground, you can hear the revving of engines and the slamming of trunks as our ground borne migration begins. Our friends and neighbors start their yearly migration to the lands of constant sun. Hopefully in the excitement and anticipation of the coming trip, they have taken care of the little things that should be done when leaving for an extended period. Setting timers for indoor lighting, making sure all windows and doors are locked, and making arrangements for snow removal in their driveways. There is no easier tell-tale than an unplowed driveway after frequent snowfalls. Those of us on crime watch try to take notice if unplowed driveways have foot prints or tire tracks at homes that we’re reasonably sure have been empty for awhile. This past month we have been joined by

three new volunteers. This came at a good time as we lose several drivers to the sunbelt each winter.

Hopefully they will be able to stay with us for the foreseeable future. This past month volunteers have patrolled for eighty hours. No guns were shot and no lives lost. All is calm. If you would like to put in a few hours a month, there’s plenty of room for more drivers. If interested call Ed Aalbue at 570-894-8071 or Russ Kelly at 570-894-4034.

It is now the 11th month of the year that we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Pocono Farms. The community that we live in today shows little resemblance to Pocono Farms in its infancy and I could only imagine what it was like back then. Fortunately I had the pleasure to sit with and interview a resident that did live through that time. I would like to share his story of the formation of this unique and wonderful community that we live in.

Major Holidays that will affect your collection days are: New Years Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, and Christmas. When those holidays fall on a Monday or Tuesday, garbage collection will shift by one day.

Animals: Dogs must be leashed or on owner’s property at all times. Wildlife, such as deer and black bear, are common at Pocono Farms. We ask that you NOT FEED any wild animals.

All articles, announcements, classified ads, etc. must be submitted to the Newsletter Coordinator on or before the 5th of each month for publication in the next issue of The Weathervane. Submissions made after this date will not be considered until the following month.

Pocono Farms was formed in 1966 under a corporation named RECRA-DEL Corp. financed by John (Doc) McGregor and Patricia Faitz and the first manager was Mr. Bill Nixon. From the period of 1966 to 1970 there was a period of modest but slow growth. During that time only about 50 homes were built with the average cost of a home was about $25,000. The cost of a premium golf course lot at between $8,000 and $10,000. There were only 5 paved roads in the entire community, Lake, Wildflower, Presidential, Kilmer and Hunter. To call someone within Pocono Farms only required that you dial the last 4 digits of the phone number. By this time the first 9 holes of the golf course designed by Art Wall, Jr. was complete and open as well as the pool, tennis and clubhouse. The first pro shop was in the clubhouse and at the time all 20 gas golf carts were stored under the clubhouse. The first news letter was called the Mountain Echo and since changed to the Weathervane.

This New York Times ad from 1970 must have been effective. Growth of the community began to accelerate and you could no longer dial your neighbor with the last 4 digits of the phone number. The phone company had to install more lines for more service to the area.

At this time there were 2 separate associations governing Pocono Farms, they were CAPF and PFCC. Each had it’s own separate function. CAPF was the Community Association of Pocono Farms and was basically the homeowners association. PFCC was Pocono Farms Country Club and the association responsible for golf, tennis, and the pool as these were not bundled and included in CAPF dues. Today we are one association known as PFCCA or Pocono Farms Country Club Association.

In January of 1974, CAPF joined with 2 individual land owners in suit against RECRA-DEL Corp. over a wide variety of issues. The cases settled, and the final terms of the agreement was signed on September 17, 1974, and were favorable to the association. At this juncture the roads were not completed and the back 9 holes of the golf course were only on paper.

If not for the dedicated Board members and individual members at the time, Pocono Farms as we know it today would not exist. Through negotiation with creditors and the banks, the roads and back 9 holes of the golf course were completed by 1980.

Just as with any community, adversity is not uncommon but it is how it is dealt with and the willingness of community members to get involved that could mean the difference between success and failure.

Today Pocono Farms has over 1,400 homes with a demographic make up as diverse as any community in our country. Had it not been for the individuals that put community before self, we would not be here today and I would like to thank them for that.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS RESPONSE: First, thank you for your question on swimming pools. A & B code 203.20 states - Private swimming pools are not permitted on any Pocono Farms property. Wading pools measuring up to 18 inches high x 6 feet wide are permitted.

COMMENT: Joe, The Giordano family would like to thank you for a summer filled with wonderful activities. We are long time members, first entertaining our children at Pocono Farms, now our grandkids.

Notes from A&B

Preparing your car for Old Man Winter Hopefully by the first big winters snow (I hate even saying that word) you have taken the extra steps to prepare for cold weather driving. If not I hope this article will help you so that you’re not the one left out in the cold. First and foremost get your vehicle checked out; antifreeze, wiper fluid, wipers, heater, defroster, lights, battery, tires and brakes.

1. Antifreeze is exactly what the name implies. It stops the fluid in your engine and radiator from freezing (it also keeps the fluid cool in summer); odd, I know that it can do both but it’s true. Without this your car’s engine will freeze and besides leaving you sitting, it will cost you a small fortune to repair.

2. Wiper fluid will freeze as well. How many times have you tried to clean your windshield and all of a sudden there is a glaze of ice on it. For winter driving use the fluid specifically made for the cold weather.

3. The same goes for your wipers. When you use your wipers in the summer and you see nothing but streaks it is not going to get any better in winter. They make winter blades that help cut thru the snow and ice.

4. Test your heater and defrosters before you need them. Make sure you feel that heat coming out.

5. Walk around your car and look at all you’re lights. If you find any burned out have them replaced.

6. Have your battery checked. If it hesitates starting your car in the warm weather, it will definitely leave you sitting in the cold.

Sometimes it’s not the battery but the connection. Look at your battery terminals.

If there is a greenish white powder on them simply take some baking soda and water mixed together and pour it on the terminals.

You will see it start to bubble and soon the powder goes away. Now that fix is only temporary and will have to be addressed, but it helps with the connection.

7. Brakes. If you’re having a hard time stopping on dry roads, what do you think will happen with snow and icy conditions? Have your brakes checked and if needed replaced.

8. With your tires, take a penny and place Lincoln’s head where it reads In God We Trust in the groove of your tire. If you can’t see the top of Lincoln’s head you’re ok; if you can then you will need new tires.

Year-End Community Garden Report BY linda penett

As another successful growing season comes to a close, I would like to thank all of the community garden box holders for helping to make the garden such a wonderful addition to our community amenities. It was a great growing season and the majority of box holders took good care of their plots and the surrounding area. It was a pleasure to see how much the newer participants enjoyed their gardens. I would like to encourage everyone to plant some spring bulbs now in the fall so that we may enjoy some bright, colorful blooms come spring time. Also, stop by to see what a marvelous job Dawn Donovan has done decorating her box for Halloween. I’ve attached some pictures but they don’t do justice to the fine job she’s done.

As the cooler weather sets in and the leaves start changing eventually falling to the ground, our motivation for golf sometimes gets away from us.

Instead of packing up those clubs this season and getting into sweatpants, wing eating, beer drinking, football watching, couch season, let’s all make a point to continue to get out and play this game we all love. I want to share with you some of my secrets that help me continue to play good golf even when the weather is not the greatest.

Cold weather does affect our golf game and not in the best of ways. Let’s talk about our equipment… for one the golf ball just never seems to travel as far as it did in July. Former USGA technical director Frank Thomas has said the difference is about two yards of carry for every 10 degrees change in temperature.

Going by Thomas’ math, you’re looking at a loss of six yards if you’re playing in the 42-degree temps they had at the Match Play as opposed to 72 degrees -- or the difference between Sally Sakala’s ball finding the green on the first hole or finding the bunker.

The true issue is a golf ball is not fully compressed when it gets really cold out. A solution to this could be putting your golf balls in a wash cloth and boiling them in a small amount of water then putting them in a Ziploc bag. I have also heard of some people putting a hand warmer in their pocket and then keeping the golf ball near the hand warmer. Just remember, Bill Eckardt, rules decision 14-3/13.5 essentially states that while golf balls warmed during a round are a breach of Rule 14-3, balls warmed prior to a round are OK. My choice is to play a golf ball with a lower compression. I will take all my prov1s out of the bag and start playing a woman’s ball or something with a lower compression. Playing a lower compression golf ball will help you compress the golf ball easier leading to longer golf shots. Instead of leaving your golf bag in a cold trunk, keep it in your warm house.

Cold weather will make the grips become firm which leads to making the shafts feel and play a little stiffer. I know a few great players who sometimes even switch to more flexible shafts when they play in cold weather.

The other issue is bulk of clothing. The last thing you want is to be cold outside so we end up throwing big bulky clothing on to try to stay warm. Instead of wearing that ugly Christmas sweater, Frank DeBrincat, try putting on some thinner layers. Skiers, you know what I am talking about. Go out and get some long johns or some thermal kind of clothing. Being a skier, I have learned as long as my hands, feet, and ears are well protected and warm, I will be able to bear some of the cooler elements.
