As I write this article,(April 5th) we are gearing up to open the golf course on Saturday, April 8, 2017. Mother Nature was kind to us from the golf course perspective this winter. We removed our greens covers on Monday, April 3, 2017 and the turf was in great shape. Getting the course open in good shape sets the tone for the entire summer season. It allows us to really push the marketing products and expose potential members to the course early in the season. Typically our course takes a little more time to green up just due to the temperatures in Tobyhanna coming out of winter. To come out of winter in this good of shape is positive for everyone. Getting the golf course open also has other positive benefits. We will also extend the hours of the Grill room and open up the halfway house snack bar on the golf course. Both of these generate operational revenue for us.

As the weather continues to warm up, and as time permits, the maintenance staff will then start to get the other amenities cleaned up in preparation for the summer season. They include: the bocce court, sand volleyball, shuffleboard, tennis courts, and the children’s playground near the lake. As a reminder, if you want to fish in the lake, a valid PA fishing license is required for those ages 16 and up along with a current year PFCCA amenity sticker. Your operational assessment pays for the treatment of the lake and the stocking of the fish we put in the lake every year. Also, as there are trout in the lake, a valid trout stamp is required as part of your fishing license purchase. A fishing license and the trout stamp can be purchased in the sporting goods section at Wal-Mart.

As a reminder, once your dues are paid in full, please stop by the Administration office to have your ID’s updated with the current year sticker. As the weather warms up, more members are out and about enjoying the amenities we maintain for you. Our Public Safety staff will be out there ensuring that you, as dues paying members of the Association, are actually the ones using your amenities. They may ask to see your badge and you need to have your PFCCA ID badge with you. This is not meant to harass you, but to ensure that you are the ones using your amenities. We are not open to the public. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

DEPARTMENT HEADS SPECIAL NOTE - Also, we have ordered news signs that will go around the member access areas around the General Manager David Timko lake. The signs will state to not feed the ducks/geese. Crime Watch Activity Report

BY RUSS KELLY I am writing in the beginning of April, looking ahead to May; thank goodness we shouldn’t even be thinking about snow anymore. March made us all remember that we live in the Poconos, and no matter how many days are sunny and nice, snow is always a possibility. The March storm really impacted the amount of patrols that took place. The deep snow was as effective as full time police coverage. Anyone looking for mischief was snowed in with the rest of us.

We were only able to patrol for sixty hours for March, which is half of the usual winter coverage. We are now able to begin the normal amount of hours we patrol, plus the snowbirds will soon be back to add to the total hours covered. This also means homeowners are expected to start cleaning up the yards and taking care of lawns.

One of our drivers thought we should go back into the packets we are given when we move here and look into the various rules we have agreed to follow. Anyone that has received a letter of non-compliance in the past should realize these are generated only if you don’t live up to your commitment to maintain the rules of the community. In the past a member of the Architectural and Building committee would put an article in the Weathervane, pointing out a tenet that we all agreed to follow. Unfortunately a lack of volunteers has left the

A&B committee without sufficient members and so it does not exist at this time. Anyone who cares about maintaining the quality of the Farms should consider joining this committee and keeping it active.

Looking through the regulations, I started with 203.5, house numbers. This would seem to be a minor rule but you would be surprised how many homes do not have numbers at the end of the driveway or on the house.

Finding your home in an emergency shouldn’t be more difficult than necessary. I can’t image why some people won’t live up to this commitment.

203.7 has to do with parking. Any vehicle requiring a commercial license such as dump trucks, mobile homes, farming or construction equipment should not be parked overnight in the driveway or area around the home.

Once in a while we come across this and it is usually reported. I assume if you have a temporary situation, you can contact the office for help with this item.

Until the A&B committee or the code official can start reminding everyone of the agreed upon rules we signed up for, I will try each month to put a reminder in this article. In the meantime we still have slots open for patrols. We would be happy to have you join this gun free group of vigilantes. Hello everyone, spring has finally arrived. If you recall last month I wrote about what I get the most complaints on, dogs. This month will be about what I get the second most complaints about, garbage. It seems pretty straightforward to me, but for some reason it perplexes the masses. So I will try to make this very simple. In the Farms we have two garbage pickup days. Monday and Tuesday. Half the community one day and the other half the next. Seems pretty easy so far correct. Well here comes the tricky part. After they empty your cans you bring them back up to your home. What we don’t do is leave them there for days on end. There are those who try to leave their cans at curbside all week, and then just bring the bags down to the cans. All that does is create a nice 24hr buffet for every bear, raccoon and possum in here. Then I get the calls and emails about all of the scattered garbage in the area. Also, remember that we have garbage collection at the maintenance yard.You can look in any Weathervane for the days and hours, as well as call the Administration Office. I will be cracking down on those offenders. Summer is coming, so next month look for the 3rd most reported offense, Grass. Enjoy the warmer weather and as always, my door is always open should you need anything.

Well Spring has sprung. We survived another fairly mild winter, with a little reminder from Mother Nature, in late March, that winter does come to the Poconos, eventually. So now it’s time to dust off the deck furniture, tune up the lawn mowers and dig out the summer gear for another fine season at Pocono Farms.

This is the time of year to truly appreciate why we live in this fine community. Our amenities are some of the finest in the Poconos, so come out and enjoy them. Meet more of your neighbors. Take advantage of the facilities and events you have in your own backyard.

We are a year round community, and there have been many opportunities to get out over the winter with the annual Holiday party, New Years’ Eve party, Super Bowl, Trivia Night, Prime Rib Night(s) and Seafood Buffet. We also have a bowling league, dart league and poker events to get us out of the house and enjoy the people we live near.

This May, we have Cinqo de Mayo, Friday May 5, the Kentucky Derby on May 6, Mother’s Day Buffet on May 14 and the return of the Live Music series in the Pub on Friday May 19.

Of course, there is the annual Memorial Day BBQ, Annual Clam Bake on the Beach, Freedom Fest/ Fireworks on the beach and way too many more to continue to list here.

As always, we just ask for you to come out and enjoy some,and if possible, all the events where we try to get our community together and enjoy Pocono Farms as our home. The summer camps and swim teams will be looking for participants soon. Golf will have the Junior Golf clinics soon. Kyle will also be putting together a junior golf team to compete against other area clubs this summer. This is our first time trying this, and I’m sure Kyle will make it a competitive, fun learning event.

Last of all, get involved. We have many committees for you to have your voice heard. This year half of our committees didn’t have any or enough members to have meetings. The Board relies on these committees to bring ideas to the community and help to address issues, continually improving our community and keeping Pocono Farms the quality life experience we expect, and the reason we moved here.

Part of your yearly operation assessment is allocated to this fund. The Replacement Reserve Fund is set aside for the replacement of major Association owned assets.

Having a well funded reserve account avoids the potential for special assessments in a time where typically larger, more expensive owned assets need to be replaced.

I am sure that many of you noticed last year the overabundance of ducks/geese who appear to have found a new home at the Farm’s lake, golf course, and even at the pool. You probably noticed as well the mess that they leave behind – our beach, lake and grass are covered in duck/geese feces. We know that the maintenance staff shovels the beach each morning but unfortunately that does not even make a dent in the problem. It is quite disheartening to see little children trying to make sand castles among the feces or to walk along the shore and see feces floating in the water. Many of us like to sit on a chair or a blanket on the beach to take in the beautiful scenery – but we have to watch where we put our feet or try to keep the ducks from running on our blanket. We have to ask the question “is there anything we can do to take back our lovely surroundings?” The answer is a big YES!!!

The Pennsylvania Game Commission was contacted and we spoke to Wildlife Biologist Molly Giles. Molly made it quite clear that the first thing to do is to STOP FEEDING THE DUCKS!! She explained that not only do humans suffer from the pollution caused by a large population of ducks, but that the ducks themselves suffer from human interaction. Regular feeding can cause poor nutrition, overcrowding, delayed migration and unnatural behavior in the waterfowl, not to mention the spread of disease which affects both birds and humans. In days gone by it seemed quaint to walk by the water and throw bread, etc., to the wildlife. We now know that it is dangerous to both the ducks and the well-meaning individuals.

It is also surprising that the ducks are beginning to find our pool a nice place to hang out. Again, not only is the fecal matter in the pool unhealthy for humans, but the chlorine in the pool is dangerous for the ducks. Those of us using the pool must be diligent in cleaning up food dropped carelessly around the pool, make sure leftovers are properly placed in receptacles and be willing to shoo the birds away when they attempt to land at the pool area.

The new sign at the pool last summer “Please Don’t Feed the Ducks” was a welcome addition, but it is only the first step. We need to educate our fellow residents, staff, and visitors of the real problems we are creating by not seriously addressing these issues.

We are currently exploring ways to discourage the ducks from landing in the Farms in the first place (including the golf course fairways) and will report new information as it becomes available.

We need to educate our fellow residents, staff, and visitors of the real problems we are creating by ignoring this wildlife issue. Please be a responsible resident and STOP FEEDING the ducks/geese. If you see someone feeding them, ask them to STOP and remind them of the reasons not to. If they continue to do so, report them to the administration office. Thank you and let’s work together to do everything we can to eliminate this problem at our beautiful Pocono Farms.

Major Holidays that will affect your collection days are: New Years Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, and Christmas. When those holidays fall on a Monday or Tuesday, garbage collection will shift by one day.

ANIMALS: Dogs must be leashed or on owner’s property at all times. Wildlife, such as deer and black bear, are common at Pocono Farms. We ask that you NOT FEED any wild animals.

I have built and executed multiple business plans with several different markets. I understand how to get things accomplished in the short term and prioritizing short term initiatives that drive long term strategic vision. As Board president for the several years we have year on year delivered a finical secure budget, while adding several diversified programs for within the community to attract a greater level of participation in our community activities. It is imperative that we continue to make sound investments that will sustain the long-term growth of our Community.

What is your motivation for seeking a seat on the Board of Directors? If elected I no longer plan to be in the president’s role however I would like to work on the transition with the new president to ensure a clear path forward. As I have been involved in the community this has given me ample interaction with the residents of Pocono Farms. I am confident that I understand the needs of our Community. We have excellent amenities; while the level of participation has increased, they are used by a minority of our members. If elected again to the Board I will continue to work diligently to ensure a healthy balance of our current programs while developing programs and activities for our younger families and the different diversity that we have within our Community.

If elected, in what areas do you hope to influence the Board concerning the direction and governance of this community? I have had the pleasure of initially spending weekends in Pocono Farms for many years. As a now full time resident, I have seen the transition from a 2nd home community to a full time community of young families. I feel very strongly that the future of PFCCA is our children and for many our grandchildren. As a Board Member I will be fully committed to establish programs that attract more of our residents towards our current and future amenities. In short, I will strive to create a greater sense of Community.

Why should the membership elect you to the Board of Directors? As a young family resident I understand the direction we need to take our Community. As the demographics of PFCCA have changed over the past years, we cannot continue to do the same things and expect different results. I have the ability of getting things done. I work well with others and I am passionate about the success of Pocono Farms.

WAYNE MEYERS How many years have you been a member of the Farms? Over 17 years.

What is your occupation? Telecommunications/Networking/Project Mgmt.

Please describe committees, clubs, volunteer work and other activities in which you have participated. I have extensive volunteer experience, starting with Pocono Commuter, Inc., back in 2003, as well as 9 years serving on the Board of Directors for Pocono Farms Country Club, several as Vice-President and Secretary. I’ve participated in the planning and execution of events such as trash pickups, community picnics and holiday parties. I help aspiring writers improve their craft.

Describe any skills, talents, or specialized training, which as a Board Member, you feel will be beneficial to the community. I have a strong background in technology and project management throughout my professional career. I am very good at identifying problems or flaws in existing procedures, formulating solutions, and implementing those solutions with limited resources. I am happy to roll up my sleeves and get personally involved in whatever needs to be done. I recognize that working for the Board is being part of a team. Teams do not always agree with each other, and sometimes you need to compromise for the greater good of the community. After 30 years in the corporate world, I well understand this concept, knowing when compromise is the only way to come out ahead rather than drag everything down. I also respect the opinions and experience of others and willingly take that into consideration while formulating my own ideas. I have extensive experience in non-profit management and operations, having served as Founder and President of Pocono Commuter, Inc., which served the Pocono community for over 7 years.

What is your motivation for seeking a seat on the Board of Directors? While I understand that we are all busy people with careers, families, and houses to take care of, the bottom line is if we do not become part of the solution things will never get better, and may only get worse. To that end I am willing to take time to help improve the community I call home. While Pocono Farms is a great community to live in, I believe we can always find improvements and ways to make things run smoother with lower cost. Over the past two years since my last Board term expired, we’ve taken community management in an interesting direction. I want to be part of the oversight of the management and operations of this new direction, to make sure this is the right decision for the Farms, and to ensure the proper checks and balances are in place to maintain business objectivity.

If elected, in what areas do you hope to influence the Board concerning the direction and governance of this community? I would like to increase the use of technology within Farms operations and especially as a communications resource among the residents. There are many great events that are held by the Farms, but many people may have missed out simply because they didn’t know about them. The email blasts are great, but not the best, or the only solution. We do not utilize the Farms website as much as we could, and that needs to be addressed. The system used is old and outdated, and should be completely revamped, and include mobile friendly applications. I would like to encourage a wide variety of soft amenities such as clubs and activities that don’t take a large bite out of our budget, but involve the Farms community with fun and gratifying events. I believe the Board and staff do a wonderful job of controlling expenses, but I’d like to ensure our hard-earned dues are spent with the greatest return for Farms quality of life and cost-efficient operations.

Why should the membership elect you to the Board of Directors? Because I am committed to returning the trust and favor of your vote with 110% dedication towards solving existing problems while preventing future ones from occurring, as well as proactively stepping forward to make our community run as efficiently as possible. I take this role very seriously and look forward to being one part of the team who helps all of us enjoy our community more each and every day.

JAMES YANDO How many years have you been a member of the Farms? My wife, Linda, and I have been homeowners in Pocono Farms for the past 4 years. We have been visiting friends here for the past 20 years and loved it so much, that we decided to purchase our own home.

What is your occupation? My employment background includes 30 years in the Banking and Insurance industries. Of these 30 years, 26 have been in the insurance industry, including 16 years with my current employer as Senior Manager of Operations.

Please describe committees, clubs, volunteer work and other activities in which you have participated. At the Farms, I’ve been a member of the A&B Committee for the past 2 years and have participated each year in the Community Spring Clean-up Day. Outside of the Farms, I volunteer as a member of the United Way Community Investment Committee, participate in the Everybody Wins Reading Program as a literacy volunteer, coordinate our local annual Regional Food Bank Holiday Drive and volunteer for Habitat for Humanity.

Describe any skills, talents, or specialized training, which as a Board Member, you feel will be beneficial to the community. I bring experience in the areas of budget, expense management, operational leadership and organizational skills. My primary responsibilities and experience include budget planning, developing business plans, implementing company performance targets, managing personnel and project management. This includes 72 employees with a budget of 5 million. My work experience provides me with an overall perspective of managing a business operation and understanding the various aspects involved. In addition, my positive outlook, ability to work with others and dedicated work ethic will lend itself to a successful partnership with board members, staff and the community.

What is your motivation for seeking a seat on the Board of Directors? My motivation to join the Board is to contribute and help strengthen the community into the future. My wife and I truly enjoy the community, the people, the amenities and the atmosphere of the Farms. We’ve met so many nice people and enjoy attending the various events throughout the year. I enjoy collaborating with others and would appreciate the opportunity in helping to keep the Farms a great place to live. It would be a great honor to serve the community and help create opportunities for improvement.

If elected, in what areas do you hope to influence the Board concerning the direction and governance of this community?

If elected, I would like to help preserve and strengthen the many positive aspects of the Farms for the future. I would advocate for financial stability while providing quality amenities for all members of the association. In addition, I would like to contribute in developing a long-term plan for the community and expand on many of the initiatives the current board members are doing. I would support and encourage feedback and participation from the community and would like to hear from all members whether permanent residents, commuter homeowners, weekend members or summer residents. I strongly believe there is something for everyone at the Farms which can only strengthen our association and the environment in which we share.

Why should the membership elect you to the Board of Directors? I promise to listen to the needs of the community, balance sound financial decisions while providing superior amenities for all members and strive to strengthen the association with long-term goals in mind. I will be a positive voice for members and an advocate for causes important to all residents.

You may see a new face around Pocono Farms. Wemberly belongs to The Guide Dog Foundation and she is being co-raised by Laurie and Tim Holland. The Hollands are sharing the responsibility of developing Wemberly with another family in the Moscow area. As puppy raisers, basic obedience and housebreaking are only part of the program. Socializing is a key component as well. Introducing a future assistance dog to different environments is extremely important and imperative to the training and subsequently, their success.

A future assistance dog should be exposed to a variety of stimulations, noises, and even smells.

This helps prepare them for the advanced training at the Guide Dog Foundation which is located on Long Island. Wemberly will go to the advanced training in spring of 2018 when she is approximately 16 months old. Currently, Wemberly attends puppy classes each month with other future assistance dogs.

Most sight-impaired people live in urban areas, so why expose Wemberly to activities such as playing golf at Pocono Farms? The Guide Dog Foundation partners with America’s Vet Dogs. If Wemberly does not excel to the level needed for a sight impaired person, her second opportunity is to be a companion to a veteran and of course, some veterans play golf too!

When you see Wemberly at the club house and around the community, please understand that her yellow jacket means she is “working” and should not be approached or disturbed. However, if you see that her jacket is off, chances are Wemberly is available for a pet or a belly rub!

We hope you enjoy seeing Wemberly grow up and become a successful assistance dog! Round by Round

BY ADAM HERMAN I am pleased to report that the entire golf course made it through winter very well. The greens look fantastic and the rest of the course will green up more as the temperatures rise. We followed the same procedures to help prevent winter damage on greens that we did last winter. Last winter was not a very good test. This winter was a much better test due to the snowstorms that we got that turned to rain causing a lot of ice on the greens at nighttime. After these storms we shoveled out the runoff areas which seemed to work very well. The same thing was done when we had the late 30+ inch snowstorm. There is no silver bullet to prevent winter damage but I believe all the small pieces put together really helped with what we have today!

As the season progresses we will be concentrating our efforts on bunkers and tree limbing or removal. These were the two main feedbacks we received through the member surveys that were filled out. Also, we will be working on the landscape bed to the right of the Pro Shop where we removed everything. This area will be equipped with a new permanent scoreboard and new signage for the Pro Shop. The area will also have new lighting, plants, turf paths, benches, rock walls, and at some point a beautiful clock. It’s really going to be impressive when it’s complete.

I’d like to welcome back all our loyal members and say hello to all our new members. Looking forward to seeing everyone out there and having a great 2017 at Pocono Farms Country Club!

Summer is fast approaching but before it does here’s some of the fun things we did in April and what to look forward to this month!

APRIL EVENTS:

The 2017 dart season concluded with new winners this year. The winners are Frank Milano, Mike Elbert, and Joe Sprovkin. Darts are played in the Glacier Lake Grill & Pub on Sunday afternoons from midwinter to spring, with no cost to play! Join us next year for our 5th dart season!

Happy Easter! This year’s eggs coloring in the community room and Bunny Brunch with egg hunt in the banquet room were both well attended. A special thanks to the Easter Bunny for making time in his busy schedule to take pictures and help with the egg hunt.

On Earth Day, Pocono Farms had its annual clean-up day, working with both Coolbaugh Township and PennDot. Thank you to everyone who participated, it was a great success!

Everyone was feeling lucky for the Mohegan Sun Casino trip last month. Next trip will be this fall.

On Friday May 5th, our Cinco De Mayo celebration is being held 6pm-10pm. There will be a children’s program offered if anyone is interested.

On Thursday, May 11th at 6:00pm, in the Glacier Lake Grill & Pub, we will have our bocce meeting. The season will begin the last week in May and will continue to the end of August. Interested in playing? Call or email Joe Sprovkin.
