Springtime has arrived in the Poconos!

Welcome back to all our snow birds, it’s lovely to see everyone returning to the Farms and the beginnings of our spring and summer season! As I write this article on April 3rd for the May issue of the Weathervane, there is talk of snow in the forecast but I don’t think it’s anything for us to worry about. I can say with confidence that we survived another winter in the Poconos and luckily for all of us who were around this winter it really wasn’t a bad one. The children had only one snow day this year, and are due to finish the school year on Monday, June 6, 2016; certainly the earliest end date in a long time.

Last month, fellow Director Harry Hamill wrote an excellent article informing the Pocono Farms Community of the Management Team and the Board’s plans and focus for 2016 and beyond. Harry provided everyone with some data on how things are slowly turning around like bad debt and homes being sold; certainly a step in the right direction.

In late February, the Board of Directors had their annual strategic planning meeting and spent a significant amount of time discussing the next steps for our community. Hearing the opinions of our community members, we need to take your voices and turn them into action items. We are beginning to prepare the annual voting issues for this year’s Annual Meeting on July 16th at 10:00am. Please watch your mail and the other community communications for more information.

Prior to this year’s Annual Meeting, and in accordance with our governing documents, we will be voting for three new Board Members. If you know someone who cares about Pocono Farms and wants to help support new ideas, provide new ways of thinking and represent you and the community, please encourage them to run for the Board.

To end on a positive note, at the end of the 1st quarter our collection rate is 1.75% higher than last year at the same time, and almost 5.5% better than 5 years ago (2012) for the first quarter. We are seeing a progressive improvement that has been slow and steady. Management and the Board are continuously working to ensure these positive trends continue.

Thoughts from the Manager

As we enter into our busy season, I usually comment on all of the amenities, events, and activities available to all of our members and their guests. While this is the very foundation of the community living experience, it is not the only one. Members also have the opportunity to elect who they feel would best represent their interests as a Director. Members also have the opportunity to vote on any issues that are presented by the Board at the Annual Meeting.

The member elected Board of Directors have the responsibility to act in the best interest of the community on behalf of its members. The Board represents the members. The Board does have certain “powers” as defined in the governing documents. However, some changes, amendments, and items outside of those powers require a membership vote. The Board does spend a considerable amount of time discussing and considering voting issues prior to presenting them for a membership vote. The primary goal in all of this is to maintain your property values and preserve the quality of life that you have chosen to be a part of at Pocono Farms.

In preparation of the PFCCA Annual Meeting scheduled for July 16th at 10am, there will be potentially two mailings.

1) If there are more than three candidates for the three expiring Board seats, you will receive the printed bio’s of all candidates along with a detailed description on how to vote and submit your ballot. All ballots go to an outside agency (judge of elections) for verification and counting. Please make sure you follow the directions closely and accurately so that your vote counts. The winners will be announced at the annual meeting. If there is an election for Directors, the ballots will be mailed to you in the middle of June.

2) Then, in late June, notice will be sent announcing the location and time of the annual meeting along with any agenda items requiring membership vote. This is meant to inform you of what items may be on the agenda and to describe the voting issues.

This process is very detailed and defined within the governing documents. If you have any questions regarding the annual meeting or the governing documents in general, please feel free to stop by the Administration office. We are here to help.

hugh doran How many years have you been a member of the Farms? 29 years What is your occupation? I am retired now, but my occupation was as a mechanic for heat and ventilation. I was a union member for local 94 for 30 years. I am a Vietnam veteran, serving in the US Navy. I worked in the engine room and on pumps and engines.

Please describe committees, clubs, volunteer work and other activities in which you have participated. I served on the Fitness Committee, LRP, Crimewatch, Finance Committee and Pool Committee. I also attend board meetings as a homeowner.

Describe any skills, talents, or specialized training, which as a Board Member, you feel will be beneficial to the community. I worked in staffing, and as a receiver of delivery of food and supply. I also managed a 54 floor office building, check courier, hiring personnel.

What is your motivation for seeking a seat on the Board of Directors? My motivation for getting on the board is to provide a new face on the board and to get our senior citizens to come out and get involved in the decisions the board makes.

If elected, in what areas do you hope to influence the Board concerning the direction and governance of this community? If elected, I would do my best in getting more homeowners to our board meetings.

Why should the membership elect you to the Board of Directors? I feel if elected to the board I will be the voice of the membership. I will speak my mind and hope that I will see more homeowners at board meetings after I reach out to them.

collette houston ong How many years have you been a member of the Farms? 10 years What is your occupation? Executive Director, Clincial Research Operations at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. I have worked at Sloan Kettering since I graduated from college, and have had a series of progressive positions in the field of clinical research/human subjects protection over the past 29-1/2 years.

Please describe committees, clubs, volunteer work and other activities in which you have participated. In the 10 years we’ve lived in the Farms, I have been a member of the Recreation Committee for 1 year, and then I joined the Board of Directors three years ago. For the first year on the board I was the Board Liaison to Recreation, and for the past two years I am the Board Treasurer and the Liaison to the Finance Committee. Prior to my volunteer work at Pocono Farms, I have also volunteered in a variety of different services including but not limited to: NY Junior League, Soup Kitchen/Food Banks, NYC Playground Rehabilitation, and others.

In my professional career, I have had progressive leadership positions over the past 20 years and currently oversee an office of 160 staff and a $29 million budget. I have tremendous leadership, management and oversight experiences that I can use to share with the community and the board.

I have also been a board member for the past three years, and have gained a tremendous amount of knowledge, understanding and experiences of what it takes to be a board member and contribute to the operations of Pocono Farms. Finally, I am a mom and a parent who cares about this community and what this community means to our family, friends and neighbors. A sense of community is very important, and I hope I bring that perspective to the board as well.

What is your motivation for seeking a seat on the Board of Directors? I want to continue what I have already started. My experience on the Board of Directors has been rewarding, eye-opening, frustrating at times and most importantly I think I have made a sound contribution. I have met and listened to many of our community members. I am open to thinking “outside the box” to ensure we continuously have the best of Pocono Farms in mind. I have not been a “quiet” voice on the board as I openly and willingly share my thoughts, feelings and opinions, and I’m proud to say the board members listen and respect me. I would like to continue to serve this community for the next three years.

If elected, in what areas do you hope to influence the Board concerning the direction and governance of this community? I hope to continue the ground-work I have done over the past three years and represent the community as an active member, as a family and as a neighbor. I will always consider what is best for the community in a fiscally responsible and progressive way. We all want what is best for ourselves and our neighbors, and sometimes that comes at a cost (to something not always financial) but I will do my best to ensure we make the best decisions we can given our circumstances.

Why should the membership elect you to the Board of Directors? I believe I am a good representation of our community. I live/work in Pocono Farms full-time, I love Pocono Farms and the sense of community it provides to me and my family, and I am dedicated to continue the work that has been done to date to make Pocono Farms the best community to live in, in the Poconos.

I have served on the Board of Directors at Pocono Farms for the past nine years. During that time I was president of the board for two years and treasurer for two years. I was also on the Golf Committee for three years. I have been a golf member for 20 years and a member of the Fitness Center for five years.

Major Holidays that will affect your collection days are: New Years Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, and Christmas. When those holidays fall on a Monday or Tuesday, garbage collection will shift by one day.

Describe any skills, talents, or specialized training, which as a Board Member, you feel will be beneficial to the community. For the last 20 years I have successfully managed and grown a company of 300 people with revenues in 2015 of about $75,000,000. I have also been active in Pocono Farms having served on the board for nine years. The combination of my business management experience combined with my board experience provides me the background to effectively serve our community on the board.

What is your motivation for seeking a seat on the Board of Directors? I have spent the last 20 years living full time in Pocono Farms and I plan to spend the rest of my life living full time here. I have experienced both the growth and the challenges we have faced during this time. Since I will be living here full time I have vested interest in seeing Pocono Farms continue to positively grow.

If elected, in what areas do you hope to influence the Board concerning the direction and governance of this community?

I would focus on growing participation in the amenities. I would work towards insuring the long term financial security of our community while at the same time making it an affordable place to live.

Why should the membership elect you to the Board of Directors? I have the experience in both the business world and in our community in achieving successful growth in a fiscally responsible way.

Crime Watch Activity Report

BY RUSS KELLY We’re happy to see the winter behind us, especially those of us on crime watch. Between the snow birds and various medical problems this year, the amount of hours spent on patrol for February and March was only a total of 76 hours. This is why we always make an appeal during the winter months to the golfers and gardeners of the community to put in a few hours a month to help fill in the extra time on their hands. In April, some of the snow birds will start to trickle back into the community. We are also starting to see some of the walking wounded getting back on the road again. However, we still have a lot of slots to fill. So please, give some thought to doing something for the community as it will only take a few hours a month out of your schedule.

Animals: Dogs must be leashed or on owner’s property at all times. Wildlife, such as deer and black bear, are common at Pocono Farms. We ask that you NOT FEED any wild animals.

In other news, one of our members sent me an e-mail about another scam that has been reported. Someone from one of the credit card companies calls and asks if you have purchased a security item recently, but they won’t ask for your card number and sound legitimate. After you deny the purchase, they say they will deny the claim as long as you verify the 3-digit security code on the back of your card to ensure you are the owner.

DO NOT give them this number because if you do you will soon see a new charge on your card. Credit card companies will NEVER ask for the security code as they would already have all of your information.

Happy Spring!! The winter was very favorable to us so as everyone probably knows, we will be starting out on a very positive note. I was able to bring some of my staff back earlier than usual to get a few of the more evasive projects complete before the season gets in full swing.

All those pesky stumps along the cart paths have been ground down and then soiled and seeded. Also the irrigation on #18 has been relocated further up the hill to the left. When we expanded the rough on the inside of the dogleg, the irrigation wasn't designed to reach that far leaving that turf very dry. The irrigation will now water the fairway and rough very well and not over water the turf on the right side that always stays wet because of the lack of sunlight. Outside of the trenching work this project was done in house. With my men being able to start a little earlier, we were able to get out there and edge all the bunkers and pull out whatever boulders we could find.

Starting the season without any winter damage frees up a lot of man hours improving the golf course instead of repairing it. The membership surveys that were turned in clearly said the dissatisfaction with the bunkers. This will take up a large part of my focus this year. We will sift the sand free of stones more often this year and we will also be adding sand to the bunkers that need it the most. The bunkers were all evaluated during the edging process for sand depth. There will also be some tree work done around tees on #6/#7/#12 to get some more sunlight to those tees for better turf quality.

On behalf of myself and my staff I'd like to welcome everyone back and welcome new members for another season of great golf at Pocono Farms Country Club. We are all very excited to make this golf course the best it can possibly be!!

Fit Tips BY caty davalos, fitness director Ket tlebells A re Here!!

Yes, you read correctly, the Pocono Farms Fitness Center is now home to kettlebells! Between the feedback from the fitness survey and inquiries from our comment box, it was not a hard decision to realize these weights would be a highly welcomed addition to our facility. We purchased two separate sets ranging in weight from 3 lbs to 30 lbs in order to accommodate the diversity of our fitness members. Our instructors are also very excited to be able to incorporate this new equipment into their classes.

Throughout the world of fitness, these versatile weights are becoming more and more popular.

For those of you looking to add power moves into your workout, kettlebells can be used to perform Olympic lifts like dead lifts and cleans: Or if you are just looking to change it up from the regular barbells or dumbbells, kettlebells can be used for bicep curls, bent-over rows, triceps extensions, squats, or if you want to spice it up you can try my favorite…swings!
