I am positive that everyone looks forward to the approaching summer, warm weather and continued memorable moments on the mountain.

This summer will also mark the end of my time as a volunteer on the Pocono Farms Board of Directors. I have been a resident of this community for a little over 14 years and a member of the board for six. Over the course of my tenure as both a resident and a board member I have seen significant changes in our community in many different respects.

Pocono Farms has the nicest and most well maintained amenities for any community in the area. Our pool, golf course, clubhouse and activities that are provided for our community members are truly second to none. Additionally, these first class amenities are provided to residents of our community for one of the lowest annual dues rates in the area. It is a testament to the people who make this community run on a day to day basis that they are able to provide a quality product on a shoestring budget.

Our biggest failing as a community is participation.

For whatever reason, at any given event held

by Pocono Farms, we see the same people in attendance. As a board, and in concert with amenity managers, we have made a determined effort to drive participation through any number of new promotions or activities. In addition to offering a variety of different types of services and activities, we created a welcoming committee to reach out to residents who have moved to the community over the last 2 years; the committee received a disappointing number of responses.

our amenities, which are already paid for by the annual dues. A number of events are free to attend.

The summer season is when Pocono Farms is at its best and busiest. There are a wide variety of events for all of our residents to attend, and all of our amenities are up and running full tilt. I challenge my fellow community members to check out the schedule of events and find something that would interest them. I also challenge those members who are active in the community to extend a hand of friendship when you do see a new face at the pool, or the clubhouse, or at an event. We should all remember how it was being the new person, so say hi and communicate how great our community is and how nice it is to see a new face in the crowd.

As this is my last article, I would like to thank all of my fellow board members over the years for their service. Your willingness to put the community first and your dedication to making Pocono Farms a great place to live should be commended. Also, I would like to thank the people who serve this community with enthusiasm and commitment.

Our General Manager and Department Managers deserve all of our thanks for making Pocono Farms run as well as it does; it is not an easy task.

Lastly, my time at Pocono Farms afforded me the opportunity to meet a wonderful woman who has made my life so much more fulfilling that I couldn’t imagine it without her, Love you honey.

Thoughts from the Manager

In your professional life, you meet people with different philosophies, backgrounds, and work ethic. Every once in a while, you come across someone who really enjoys what they are doing, no matter how difficult the day or challenge might be, they are always positive.

Mr. Richard Savage was one of those people. Until his sudden passing in April, Rich Savage was our Compliance Director for the past 5 years.

Mr. Savage was one of those people who loved to work, loved to make a difference, loved the Pocono Farms Community, and loved his family and friends. To him, the compliance job was a very important one. He had a genuine compassion for those that came into the office to see him with a concern. He would often tell them – “ I live here also” as he wrote Rich Savage up the concern. To Mr. Savage, the compliance position was not about a nasty tone to his communication with the potential violator, nor was it about the fine process. His communication was about getting compliance consistent with the rules and regulations of the community. That’s just who he was, an all around good guy. I do have to admit though that if someone would give him the run around or abuse his courtesy of getting compliance, he would be a little more affirmative when needed.

Mr. Savage will be dearly missed by all of those that were fortunate enough to have had the chance to get to know him. We did, and we are a better community because of who he was and what he represented.

It is with a heavy heart that I am writing this article. As some of you may be aware of, during Mr. Savage’s illness, I was to assume his duties until his return to work.

Now with his passing, those duties remain with me until further notice. During the 4 years he and I worked together, I picked up on some of what he did. The rest I am learning hands on. I have attended my first A&B meeting, which went well. To all of you who send observation reports or leave me phone messages, rest assured I have received them and am doing everything I am allowed to and can do to remedy the situation.

When asked by a resident what is being done to rectify something, I simply cannot go into detail. That is proprietary information. We can’t give specific information out about another homeowner, but I promise we are doing all we can. If you have any A&B or Compliance questions, please stop in and see me or give me a call.

If at that time I don’t know the answer, I will find the correct information and get back to you. I miss my co-worker, I miss my friend.

While I sit in his position I will do my best to retain the very high standard he set.

Each year you, as a Pocono Farms homeowner, have the opportunity and the responsibility to select those of your fellow members who will serve you on our Board of Directors. You have a voice in your Association and its future through our Board of Directors.

hugh doran How many years have you been a member of the Farms? 29 years What is your occupation? I am retired now, but my occupation was as a mechanic for heat and ventilation. I was a union member for local 94 for 30 years. I am a Vietnam veteran, serving in the US Navy. I worked in the engine room and on pumps and engines.

Please describe committees, clubs, volunteer work and other activities in which you have participated. I served on the Fitness Committee, LRP, Crimewatch, Finance Committee and Pool Committee. I also attend board meetings as a homeowner.

Describe any skills, talents, or specialized training, which as a Board Member, you feel will be beneficial to the community. I worked in staffing, and as a receiver of delivery of food and supply. I also managed a 54 floor office building, check courier, hiring personnel.

What is your motivation for seeking a seat on the Board of Directors? My motivation for getting on the board is to provide a new face on the board and to get our senior citizens to come out and get involved in the decisions the board makes.

If elected, in what areas do you hope to influence the Board concerning the direction and governance of this community? If elected, I would do my best in getting more homeowners to our board meetings.

Why should the membership elect you to the Board of Directors? I feel if elected to the board I will be the voice of the membership. I will speak my mind and hope that I will see more homeowners at board meetings after I reach out to them.

collette houston ong How many years have you been a member of the Farms? 10 years What is your occupation? Executive Director, Clincial Research Operations at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. I have worked at Sloan Kettering since I graduated from college, and have had a series of progressive positions in the field of clinical research/human subjects protection over the past 29-1/2 years.

Please describe committees, clubs, volunteer work and other activities in which you have participated. In the 10 years we’ve lived in the Farms, I have been a member of the Recreation Committee for 1 year, and then I joined the Board of Directors three years ago. For the first year on the board I was the Board Liaison to Recreation, and for the past two years I am the Board Treasurer and the Liaison to the Finance Committee. Prior to my volunteer work at Pocono Farms, I have also volunteered in a variety of different services including but not limited to: NY Junior League, Soup Kitchen/Food Banks, NYC Playground Rehabilitation, and others.

Describe any skills, talents, or specialized training, which as a Board Member, you feel will be beneficial to the community. In my professional career, I have had progressive leadership positions over the past 20 years and currently oversee an office of 160 staff and a $29 million budget. I have tremendous leadership, management and oversight experiences that I can use to share with the community and the board. I have also been a board member for the past three years, and have gained a tremendous amount of knowledge, understanding and experiences of what it takes to be a board member and contribute to the operations of Pocono Farms.

Finally, I am a mom and a parent who cares about this community and what this community means to our family, friends and neighbors. A sense of community is very important, and I hope I bring that perspective to the board as well.

What is your motivation for seeking a seat on the Board of Directors? I want to continue what I have already started. My experience on the Board of Directors has been rewarding, eye-opening, frustrating at times and most importantly I think I have made a sound contribution. I have met and listened to many of our community members. I am open to thinking “outside the box” to ensure we continuously have the best of Pocono Farms in mind. I have not been a “quiet” voice on the board as I openly and willingly share my thoughts, feelings and opinions, and I’m proud to say the board members listen and respect me. I would like to continue to serve this community for the next three years.

If elected, in what areas do you hope to influence the Board concerning the direction and governance of this community? I hope to continue the ground-work I have done over the past three years and represent the community as an active member, as a family and as a neighbor. I will always consider what is best for the community in a fiscally responsible and progressive way. We all want what is best for ourselves and our neighbors, and sometimes that comes at a cost (to something not always financial) but I will do my best to ensure we make the best decisions we can given our circumstances.

Why should the membership elect you to the Board of Directors? I believe I am a good representation of our community. I live/work in Pocono Farms full-time, I love Pocono Farms and the sense of community it provides to me and my family, and I am dedicated to continue the work that has been done to date to make Pocono Farms the best community to live in, in the Poconos.

What is your motivation for seeking a seat on the Board of Directors? The community has been digging itself out of the setbacks caused by the depression started in 2008. In spite of declining revenues the Board and Management team have managed to control expenses and continue on a positive path. Investment in the community’s future has continued while I served on the Board. I want to be part of continuing this.

If elected, in what areas do you hope to influence the Board concerning the direction and governance of this community?

Maintaining a progressive attitude to continue to maintain and improve the assets and amenities of our community.

Why should the membership elect you to the Board of Directors? I have a good understanding of what the majority of our community members desire regarding what Pocono Farms is presently and should be in the future. I will continue the effort I put forth in my last term on the Board of Directors.

I have served on the Board of Directors at Pocono Farms for the past nine years. During that time I was president of the board for two years and treasurer for two years. I was also on the Golf Committee for three years. I have been a golf member for 20 years and a member of the Fitness Center for five years.

Major Holidays that will affect your collection days are: New Years Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, and Christmas. When those holidays fall on a Monday or Tuesday, garbage collection will shift by one day.

Describe any skills, talents, or specialized training, which as a Board Member, you feel will be beneficial to the community. For the last 20 years I have successfully managed and grown a company of 300 people with revenues in 2015 of about $75,000,000. I have also been active in Pocono Farms having served on the board for nine years. The combination of my business management experience combined with my board experience provides me the background to effectively serve our community on the board.

What is your motivation for seeking a seat on the Board of Directors? I have spent the last 20 years living full time in Pocono Farms and I plan to spend the rest of my life living full time here. I have experienced both the growth and the challenges we have faced during this time. Since I will be living here full time I have vested interest in seeing Pocono Farms continue to positively grow.

If elected, in what areas do you hope to influence the Board concerning the direction and governance of this community?

I would focus on growing participation in the amenities. I would work towards insuring the long term financial security of our community while at the same time making it an affordable place to live.

Why should the membership elect you to the Board of Directors? I have the experience in both the business world and in our community in achieving successful growth in a fiscally responsible way.

Women’s Club News

Thirsty Thursdays

Pocono Farms Women’s Club is back at the Clubhouse. Our first meeting was April 12th. We had a great turn out. Joan Schipper, our President, started the meeting thanking the Hostesses Jeanette Kuhns and Ann Shincovich. We had several visitors and new members. Also Joan asked for birthdays and anniversaries and several women were recognized.

There were no minutes read since this is our first meeting this year. But we had a Treasurers report by Andee McGuire. Our balance as of this meeting is $2,110.36 with some expenses for new name tags and place cards for our meetings.

JUNE 2nd Pizza Party - $9.95

June Centonze got up and gave the report for Lucille Dever, the Ways and Means Vice President. Our annual Tricky Tray will be June 17th. This is our major fundraiser and a list was sent around so that the women could put their names and what type of basket they might be making.

Each Thursday we have a different beer special!

It was mentioned that there was an error in the Newsletter about the meeting date. The Ladies club meets the 2nd Wednesday of the month at the Clubhouse at noon.

A variety of mixed greens, vegetables, ham, cheese, chicken, eggs, croutons, and pasta salads with an array of dressing to choose from, served with rolls and cracker assortment.

Lorraine Piel, our Sunshine Lady, got up for our prayer before the meal, but also gave us some sad news that the husband of one of our members, Mary Savage had just passed away and that the daughter of the DeMarcos had also passed. We send good thoughts to them and their families.

Our speaker, Donald Seiple, President of St. Luke’s Hospital Monroe Campus. Several other members of his team were there to answer any questions after the luncheon.

Jane Cilurso, our Membership VP, got up to let us know that our membership stands at 51 ladies and read the By-Law section for membership. She had sent letters to those ladies that had not joined as of December 2015. She said there has been a good response from that letter.

He gave a wonderful presentation letting us know all the services that they were going to offer at the new facility. It will open sometime in the fall and will have an Emergency room, over 100 private patient rooms, and 2 to 4 operating rooms and other specialty services offered by St. Luke’s, conveniently located on Route 611.

Our next hostesses will be: Marion Kelly and Lynn Fardella and our May speaker will be Dr. Steven Demko eye doctor. In June the speaker will be Monroe County Area on Aging. Please come out and join us we are always looking for new members.

Each year, the Pocono Farms golf membership raises funds through various golf events throughout the year to support the Pocono Farms Golf Scholarship Fund.

The scholarship fund itself is 100% funded through these events. The Fund was established to assist deserving high school seniors with a monetary award based on their academic record, their community involvement, their school activities, and the face to face interview with the scholarship selection committee.

The selection committee is made up of the Golf Chairperson, The Board President, and a non-golfing member of the Pocono Farms Community. They are the folks that conduct the interview and ask questions of the candidates. I can tell you as the Golf Chairman this year, it was my pleasure to sit and get to spend some time with each of the 7 candidates. It was a very difficult decision to choose only 3 students who will receive an award out of the 7 applicants. They all had their own special trait(s) that were unique to them. They all have done very well and achieved a lot for only being 17 to 18 years old. It is very humbling to hear what they want to achieve in life, what they want to study in college, and the enthusiasm they have for their future.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the applicants that applied and wish them well in their future endeavors. I would also like to thank the parents, adults, teachers, and others who have influenced these young adults.You should be very proud of them! You have influenced some very motivated and genuine young adults.

I am sure whatever they decide to do in life, that they will be very successful.

Th e I m p o rta n ce o f Stretch i n g

So m e stati c stretch es a re:

Have you ever taken a break from doing whatever it is you’re doing to stand up and reach your hands up as far as they can go? Did you feel completely rejuvenated and motivated again to crush whatever it is you’re doing?

Awesome! That is how stretching should make your feel.

Stretching is a necessity for the body. It should be the most important part of your exercise routine. If you don’t stretch, you’re only doing half a workout.

Stretching helps with flexibility. That translates to a better balanced body. Even though there are conflicting studies about the benefits of stretching, it has been proven that flexibility helps maintain a healthy range of motion as you age.

Now, is it better to stretch before or after a workout?

The answer is…Both.

Stretch i n g Bef o re E x ercise When you stretch before your exercise routine, you’re getting your body ready for what’s coming next.

Stretching helps prevent muscle strains caused by tight muscles. How? By increasing blood flow to muscles. ** It’s a good idea to warm up by doing a light exercise, such as walking or biking, for five minutes before doing your stretches.** Good stretches to do before exercising are dynamic stretches. They are controlled swinging movements that take your joints to a full range of motion. The more they mimic the exercises you’re about to do, the better.

So m e dy n a m i c stretch es a re: Side Leg Lifts (Hips and inner thighs) – Placing your hands on a wall or steady post, swing one leg out to the side then let it swing back in front of the leg you’re standing on. Use momentum as opposed to lifting the leg. Repeat 8 – 10 times on each side.

Frankenstein’s (Hamstrings) – Standing, keeping your back straight and arms out in front of you, swing one leg in front of you as if you were trying to reach your hands.

Alternate legs as you “walk” forward or stand in place.

Use momentum here too. This stretch can be done for 10 – 20 seconds. Don’t lean forward and don’t force the hamstring if you are tight.

Butt-Kicks (Quadriceps) – Keeping your back straight, jog forward or in place bringing your heels as close to your butt as you can alternating legs as if jogging. This stretch can be done for 10 – 20 seconds.

Arm Circles (Shoulders) – Standing straight, circle one arm backwards then forward. Repeat 8 – 10 times on each side.

Walk on your Tippy-Toes (calves) – walk back and forth across the room to make sure those stubborn calves are warmed up and loose Stretch i n g A f ter Exercise After a strength training/cardio routine where muscles are loaded, the muscles remain contracted (or shortened) for a period of time. They recover or restore themselves by getting back to a healthy length.

Stretching helps this recovery process move along faster.

It also reduces muscle soreness or that stiff feeling you get the next day.

Good stretches to do after exercising are static stretches. These stretches are done while the body is at rest and positions are held for 20 – 30 seconds.

Hips & Glutes – Laying on a mat (face up), bend both knees with feet on the mat. Place the right foot on top of the left knee. Grab under the left leg and gently pull the leg towards you. Repeat on the other side.

Hamstrings (back of legs) – Laying on a mat (face up) and using a yoga strap or rope, straighten the left leg and let it rest on the mat. Place the strap or rope under the right foot. Straighten the right leg and lift it towards you, then repeat with the other leg. No strap, no problem. Just grab your leg either below or above your knee, keep knee bent slightly if needed for tightness.

Quadriceps (front of legs) – While standing, grab your left ankle (or the top of the foot) and bring your left heel as close as you can to your butt. Don’t try to lift the knee, let it hang down to get the maximum stretch. If you can’t balance, try placing the right hand on a wall.

Repeat with the right leg. Don’t lean forward.

Shoulders – While standing bring your left arm in front of you so that it’s parallel to the floor. Hold it with your right hand. Keep the shoulder down; don’t let it get close to your ear. Repeat with the right arm.

Please note that when doing stretches they should not cause pain. You should feel the muscles elongating not intense pain. If you feel pain, ease off a little.

Stretching has many benefits. In addition to helping the muscles recover faster and improve flexibility, stretching helps enhance coordination. It also helps improve posture and circulation, and relieve stress.

Luckily we have an amazing Full Body Stretch class offered twice a week; Tuesday nights at 6pm and Friday mornings at 10am. So come join a stretch class or schedule an orientation to learn more stretches. You won’t regret it!
