As I am writing this article I can see the beginning of spring and I am looking forward to many of the community activities that come with the warm weather. Our community offers many activities and amenities to our residents throughout the year, but especially during the spring, summer and fall. My fellow board members and I look forward to seeing everyone enjoying the community and the events.

The board has managed expenditures and provided balance budgets in my tenure, but as we prepare for the Annual Meeting we will be discussing dues, capital reserves, and future expenditures. Yes, these are topics that nobody wants to discuss, but it is necessary and the responsible way to plan for the present and future generations that will be members of Pocono Farms.

The event that we, as board members, ask for your participation in is the Annual Meeting. This event sets the course for the year and the future of Pocono Farms. We, as members of Pocono Farms, have a responsibility to insure that our community amenities and activities perpetuate the lifestyle we moved to Pocono Farms to enjoy with our family and friends. Each member’s opinion and vote is necessary to continue the growth and development of Pocono Farms for our families.

We ask that you take a walk and view our amenities, attend our events and enjoy the quality of life Pocono Farms provides. As you take this walk, enjoy our amenities and events, you will notice that the staff, management, board and members of Pocono Farms have maintained and improved our community. To continue this we need to be fiscally responsible and we need to realize that the cost to maintain our community has risen over the past four years since the membership last voted a dues increase.

As board members we continue to monitor expenses, develop strategies to generate revenues and maintain our amenities. Our goal is to provide a strategy that will minimally impact the members of Pocono Farms, while being fiscally

Thoughts from the Manager

We are now 2 months into the new 2 can garbage service. For the most part it is working out well.

There are always a few little bumps and some better communication that may need to happen.

One of the comments that we have heard is that the pickup time varies too much. This was due to County Waste trying different routes to see which route was the most efficient. You should have a pretty good idea as to what time they are picking up. Another reason for the varying times was that it was taking some time to get used to the new automated pick up truck. Additionally, they still use the back loading truck on Mondays as there a lot of stops on Mondays. The system is getting better each week.

An area that we feel will help is that members need to make sure the cans are 5 feet apart. Too many times the cans are right next to one another

Staff Spotlight ARTIE FURMAN, DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC SAFETY

Hello, my name is Artie Furman and I am your Director of Public Safety. I started here at “the Farms” in 2012. Before I accepted the position here I had been the Assistant Director of Public Safety and Director of Public Safety at Saw Creek Estates and Penn Estates respectively. I am also a licensed Private Detective and have been so since 2001. I was born in Long Beach California and raised by my Grandparents in Lockhart TX and Lake Hopatcong NJ, moving to Pennsylvania in 1975. I went to High School at Bangor Area Senior High and college at East Stroudsburg State College, “that was before it became ESU”.

When not working you will likely find me doing the business I was raised in, Antiques. I am always at an auction or flea market and my weekend mornings are reserved for yard sales. I love going on house calls because I never know what I may find. I just know a Picasso or a Rembrandt is waiting for me somewhere, well at least I’d like to think it is. I actively collect artwork primarily focusing on maritime subjects, but I enjoy all things that the artist’s hands create. I also collect coins and guns.

I have two children born within the same year “my Irish twins” Seth 15 and Mary 14 whom I could not be prouder of, as my desk full of photos can attest too.

I live with my girlfriend Lisa who friends refer to as a “Saint” for putting up with me and my unending search for lost treasures. When I escape from the working world to re-charge my batteries you can find me in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, either on a boat or the beach enjoying nature’s bounty, or maybe looking for Black Beards treasure.

and the truck cannot pick them up that way. The efficiency with this system is to keep the guy in the truck and moving on to the next stop. Also, please remember that your cans need to be removed from the street by 6pm the following day. This is why there are wheels on the cans so that they can be moved rather easily. On April 26th, our Recreation Director – Joe Sprovkin, played host to “keep the Farms Beautiful” in conjunction with Penn Dot and Earth Day. Over 50 community members helped out cleaning up the trash alongside the roads within Pocono Farms. After the snow melts, it usually reveals a lot of trash from past few months. Their efforts are much appreciated. One particular area that accumulates a lot of trash is around the corners.

Parents/Guardians – maybe you could adopt a bus stop and police it for trash? This would go a long way in keeping the Farms beautiful.

In closing, we all want the Farms to remain a place that our members are proud to be a part of for the way in which it looks. If you see someone dumping trash, please let us know as soon as possible. There is at times, illegal dumping within the Farms. With the help of concerned members who got involved, we have been able to turnover information to the Waste Authority who have followed up on these incidents.

Crime Watch Activity Report

Spring has arrived here in the Poconos, so says the calendar. We had a lot of rain and it’s still on the chilly side. Our snow birds are returning and all should be back by the end of May. During the month 13 volunteer drivers patrolled the community for 86 hours. We could use some help during the summer months. We have openings on weekends and evenings. Call the office and a committee person will call you back.

I thought you would be interested in this. A few items that were published in the Monroe County Seniors Express Times on SCAMS TARGETING SENIORS: Health Care/ Medicare/Health Insurance Fraud: In these types of scams, perpetrators may pose as a Medicare representative to get older people to give them their personal information, or they will provide bogus services for elderly people at makeshift mobile clinics, then use the personal information they provide to bill Medicare and pocket the money. Counterfeit Prescription Drugs: Most commonly, counterfeit drug scams operate on the Internet, where seniors increasingly go to find better prices on specialized medications.

The danger is that besides paying for something that will not help a person’s medical condition, victims may purchase unsafe substances that can inflict even more harm.

We have audited the financial statements of Pocono Farms Country Club Association, Inc. for the year ended December 31, 2013 and have issued our report thereon dated February 28, 2014.

Building Regulations: Permits are required from the township and from PFCCA. Please check with the office (894-4435) as to your specific needs.

Physical Asset Inventory We noted that over the years the asset summary (i.e. fixed asset/depreciation schedule) has become very extensive. We feel that management should review this schedule to verify all items on this report are still legitimate assets owned by the Association. We would fully expect that there would be a fair amount of deletions or write offs, although the net effect on the financial statements would be zero (because all of the assets were accounted for properly and depreciated). However, we feel that accurately accounting for all items on this subsidiary schedule would benefit greatly in future periods.

Refuse Collection: Curbside pickup on household trash and recycling is done on Monday’s and Tuesday’s beginning at 6:00am

by County Waste 570-382-3304. Please refer to the pickup list on our website www.poconofarms.com to determine your pickup day. Major holidays that will affect your collection day are: New Years Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. When those holidays fall on a Monday or Tuesday, garbage collection will shift by one day.

County Waste will only pick up household trash and recycling. If you have any other items to discard, please call them at 570-382-3304 to set up arrangements.

Animals: Dogs must be leashed or on owner’s property at all times.

Wildlife, such as deer and black bear, are common at Pocono Farms. We ask that you NOT FEED any wild animals.

Emergencies: For ALL emergencies including medical or fire please contact 911 first, then contact Public Safety at 570-894-4435 x105.

Each year you, as a Pocono Farms homeowner, have the opportunity and the responsibility to select those of your fellow members who will serve you on our Board of Directors. You have a voice in your Association and its future through our Board of Directors.

Neil Carlson How many years have you been a member of the Farms? 28 years What is your occupation? Director of Solar Sales, East-Unirac Inc. Please describe committees, clubs, volunteer work and other activities in which you have participated.

St. Ann’s Golf Committee, Vice Chairman of the PFCCA Golf Committee, President of PFCCA Board of Directors Describe any skills, talents, or specialized training, which as a Board Member, you feel will be beneficial to the community.

I have built and executed multiple business plans with several different markets. I understand how to get things accomplished in the short term and prioritizing short term initiatives that drive long term strategic vision. As Board president for the prior 3 years we have year on year delivered a cash neutral budget, while adding several diversified programs within the community to attract a greater level of participation in our community activities. It is imperative that we continue to make sound investments that will sustain the long-term growth of our Community.

What is your motivation for seeking a seat on the Board of Directors?

In addition to having been a board member and active in St. Ann’s Church, being involved in the community has given me ample interaction with the residence of Pocono Farms. I am confident that I understand the needs of our Community. We have excellent amenities; while the level of participation has increased, they are used by a minority of our members. If elected again to the Board I will continue to work diligently to ensure a healthy balance of our current programs while developing programs and activities for our younger families and the different diversity that we have within our Community.

If elected, in what areas do you hope to influence the Board concerning the direction and governance of this community?

I have had the pleasure of initially spending weekends in Pocono Farms for many years. As a now full time resident, I have seen the transition from a 2nd home community to a full time community of young families. I feel very strongly that the future of PFCCA is our children and for many our grandchildren. As a Board Member I will be fully committed to establish programs that attract more of our residents towards our current and future amenities. In short, I will strive to create a greater sense of Community.

Why should the membership elect you to the Board of Directors?

As a young family resident I understand the direction we need to take our Community. As the demographics of PFCCA have changed over the past years, we cannot continue to do the same things and expect different results. I have the ability of getting things done. I work well with others and I am passionate about the success of Pocono Farms.

Peter A. Volpe How many years have you been a member of the Farms? 24 years What is your occupation? I am retired from both the New York City Police Dept. and Pocono Mountain School District.

Please describe committees, clubs, volunteer work and other activities in which you have participated.

Three times in the past, I have had the privilege of serving on the Board of Directors and at times served as the Association’s Vice President. I have been on the Crime Watch, Pool Committee, Recreation Committee and House Committee. I have also served as the Vice President for the school union. I am currently the Commander of AMVET Post 248.

Describe any skills, talents, or specialized training, which as a Board Member, you feel will be beneficial to the community.

I am a people person who listens to what people are really saying. I have a good feel for what is really happening with our Community. I have been involved in many of the activities of Pocono Farms for the last twenty-four years. I have a good sense of our history and feel for what should be done now.

What is your motivation for seeking a seat on the Board of Directors?

I am motivated by a sense of giving back to the Community that I love to live in. Betty Ann and I are fortunate that our daughter Jaclyn has been enjoying the Pocono Farms’ experience for her entire life.

If elected, in what areas do you hope to influence the Board concerning the direction and governance of this community?

I would encourage future Boards to maximize the return on our amenities while using the fiscal prudence needed in these challenging economic times. We must adapt our policies to the changing needs of a changing population.

Why should the membership elect you to the Board of Directors?

I am an open-minded, objective person who comes in with no agenda except to keep Pocono Farms moving forward in the direction that will benefit all of us.

Richard McCormick How many years have you been a member of the Farms? 9 years What is your occupation? Customs Compliance specialist (Customs Broker) Please describe committees, clubs, volunteer work and other activities in which you have participated.

Over the past 5 years I have been active in the A&B and Pool Committees and have been the board liaison to the A&B and House Committees. My family and I have been active with the Recreation department, either assisting and/or participating in the majority of events offered at Pocono Farms (to include Community Clean Up Day, volunteering to assist with holiday events and being an active board member for the past 3 years).

Describe any skills, talents, or specialized training, which as a Board Member, you feel will be beneficial to the community.

Over my career and time as a board member, my background with legal, financial and project management have provided me the ability to look at the future and develop plans of action. Along with my fellow board members, I will look at the present state of Pocono Farms; determine strategies to move Pocono Farms forward and to insure its financial health. My decision making skills are based on factual information, budgets, cost and cost improvement plans, will assist in developing a plan for the future of Pocono Farms.

What is your motivation for seeking a seat on the Board of Directors?

The past three years Pocono Farms has been challenged with many issues and the board has provided leadership and developed strategies to move Pocono Farms forward. As many of these strategies and/or initiatives are still in development or in progress, I will like the opportunity to assist in their completion.

As a board member you are trusted with the health and well being of Pocono Farms, although it is a challenge both for the community and the board members, it is rewarding knowing that you are part of something that provides a feel of home and style of life that we enjoy at Pocono Farms.

If elected, in what areas do you hope to influence the Board concerning the direction and governance of this community?

We have been challenged with a collections issue and foreclosure issue in Pocono Farms. My fellow board members and I must continue to be creative in developing new revenue streams to assist in decreasing the impact of the collections and foreclosure issues. Work to develop sound fiscally responsible budgets as we have over the past 3 years, monitor expenditures, without sacrificing the lifestyle at Pocono Farms. Insure that monies spent will assist in the increase in present and/or development of new revenue streams. Work with management to increase the visibility of Pocono Farms Realty to provide a service to our residents, while bringing in a new revenue stream.

Why should the membership elect you to the Board of Directors?

My family and I have chosen Pocono Farms as our home, and look forward to enjoying our lives here as our children grow. I will devote my time and effort to continue to improve Pocono Farms financial and community health for the present and future. I am dedicated to improving the quality of life in our community through developing a plan for the future to enhance all community member experiences with our amenities and functions offered at Pocono Farms. I look forward to tackling the challenges and providing leadership if provided the opportunity to serve Pocono Farms.

Brian Cavanaugh How many years have you been a member of the Farms? 21 years What is your occupation? I am the owner of B. Cavanaugh Mechanical Co., a heating and air conditioning contracting company.

Please describe committees, clubs, volunteer work and other activities in which you have participated.

I was the chairperson and a member of the Long Range Planning Committee. Two major tasks were accomplished with this committee. The construction of the Fitness Center and the refurbishment of the swimming pool. I was involved with the planning and construction of the community garden. I was the liaison for the garden committee, liaison for the fitness center and am currently the liaison for the golf committee. I was also a volunteer for the swim team for many years.

Describe any skills, talents, or specialized training, which as a Board Member, you feel will be beneficial to the community.

As an owner of a small business I have to be dependable, flexible and innovative and must think outside the box. I believe my experience, as well as my technical and mechanical background will serve Pocono Farms well during this challenging time.

What is your motivation for seeking a seat on the Board of Directors?

Having the privilege to serve on the Board of Directors for the past three years has been an educational and eye opening experience. Both the board and Management have made progress in advancing the quality of life in Pocono Farms but also understand that there is still much more that can be done. I would like to continue on the board to complete some of the projects that we began and introduce any others that may enhance our living experience at the Farms. My motivation for seeking a seat on the Board of Directors is desired to help Pocono Farms be the premier community in the Pocono area. We have made many positive changes over the past few years but we have certainly not reached our full potential.

If elected, in what areas do you hope to influence the Board concerning the direction and governance of this community?

I would hope to represent all members of the community, regardless of demographics and try to influence more member participation in events held at Pocono Farms. Through outings and events backed and initiated by Management and the Board of Directors this can be done. Membership participation, whether in amenity usage, fitness center, golf or social events is a key to a strong and growing community. Maintaining and enhancing our current amenities, as well as marketing, is a key element to making Pocono Farms successful.

Why should the membership elect you to the Board of Directors?

As a member for 21 years I have a passion for the place I call home. The people, the community and all of the things that I moved here for still exist. I would like to help preserve and enhance that experience so others, in the future, may enjoy what we have now.

Getting to Know You

Meet the Antolas: John and Joan

John was raised in Leonia and has lived his whole life no more than three miles from his boyhood home. He has three siblings (two sisters and one brother). He grew up across the street from Englewood Country Club and that began his love for golf. He was able to play regularly, be a caddy and even hunted and sold used golf balls on the course.

Education from Fairleigh Dickinson University and became a teacher. She has been a math teacher at Paramus Catholic for ten years and is currently the Department Chairperson overseeing a department of 21. Paramus Catholic has approximately 1600 students and is the largest private school in New Jersey and in the top ten for the country.

Joan lived all over the country. Her father was an importer of high-end ladies’ shoes and he moved regularly for better opportunities. It was difficult continually being the new kid in school so Joan and her sister and two brothers spent a lot of time together and became very close to one another. Joan says she had very spoiled feet growing up, as her shoe size is 6 and that is the sample size so she was showered with expensive shoes.

John and Joan dated for six years and were married May 17, 1985 in a beautiful little church in Ridgefield Park.

Joan was very active with that church and served as Treasurer for fifteen years.

John went to Newark College of Engineering and got his degree in civil engineering. He started with FM Global (has not always been called that) and has remained for almost forty years. He started as a field engineer and then became a Senior Account Engineer, a position that he has held for over 35 years. FM Global is an insurance company serving the Fortune 500. As a Senior Account Engineer, it is his job to consult on design systems to mitigate fires or explosions in large buildings and factories. He has traveled all over the world and has gotten to see factories and how diverse products such as cars, cookies and dog food are made.

Joan went to Kean University and got her degree in PreMed. She did not go on to veterinary school, as she had hoped, due to financial considerations. She used that science degree to become a Fire Protection Engineer.

She started at FM Global and John was her trainer. She continued to do that for twenty years, moved on to other companies and became part of a group of five who worked starting up international divisions for insurance companies. She joined Liberty Mutual and ended her corporate life as Vice President of International Engineering Operations. At that time, she was traveling as much as 48 weeks out of the year all over the world and decided that she needed to be at home more for their son. She used to copy his textbooks and wear two watches with his and her time and would work with him at night on his homework. She got her Master in

They had an unusual common interest when they first met. Both of them were members of their volunteer departments; John on the fire department and Joan on heavy rescue/fire. . Joan was the first woman in her town in that organization and did it for over 8 years. John continues to do so and been a volunteer for 40 years. He has served on virtually every position in his department including Chief.

He has served on the State Fire Commission and is with the County Fire/Police Academy.

John and Joan have one son – John (Johnny). Johnny has certainly followed in his parents’ footsteps as his degree is in civil engineering and he also works for FM Global and is an Account Engineer. It will be easy for the company when John retires as they could move Johnny into his office without changing the nameplate. Johnny has also been involved with the Volunteer Fire Department in his town. He started when he was 16 as a junior volunteer and is currently Captain. He enjoys coming up to Pocono Farms and playing golf when he can.

At a difficult time when Joan’s mother passed away, a colleague and friend, Frank Milano, (our current board president) offered the use of their vacation home here in Pocono Farms for Memorial Day Weekend. As they drove up in unbearable traffic, Joan was questioning why anyone would want to live in this area. The rest is history. They fell in love with the peace and tranquility and were looking for homes to buy by Sunday. They did purchase a home on Owasco Terrace and started coming up for weekends. Initially, it was a few times a month but as Johnny got older and they became more involved

with activities and friends in the community, they began coming up every weekend. After twenty years in their first house and in preparation for retirement, they decided to buy a bigger home and one that was located on the golf course. It is my good fortune that they purchased the house next to me. A note of interest is that there have been three couples who have owned the home and all three of the wives were named Joan. They are currently preparing the home on Owasco to sell.

They are totally remodeling the new house and have torn out walls to make an open floor plan. John is extremely handy and has done the work by himself including plumbing and electricity. He is truly a craftsman. They have put in a beautiful new kitchen and a magnificent fireplace. When he is not on the golf course, John is busy from early morning with projects both inside and outside. His current project is remodeling the basement, which will include a huge bar that was originally part of the officer’s club at the Tobyhanna military base. He is also generous with his time and helping me with various tasks around my house. Not sure how he finds the time but I am very grateful that he looks out for me.

Joan has a multitude of interests. She is a Disneyholic and has visited the parks 30 – 40 times. She is an accomplished seamstress and quilter and has found a quilting buddy with Joann Shield. Don’t get the wrong idea !! She also has her own chain saw and just received a John Deere riding lawn mower for Mothers Day. She can be seen hacking and hauling outside with John. I get exhausted sitting on my deck and watching. Joan started golfing, as it was an activity she could do with John and is also a member of the fitness center.

When Johnny was a toddler, John promised him a Dalmatian when he was eight. They kept that promise and it resulted in a passion for Joan. She became friends and partners with one of the breeders and they co-own show dogs, all Dalmatians. They traveled together to all the major dog shows and it is worthwhile asking her about those experiences.

When her last dog Norma Jean retired, Joan did as well. Norma Jean lives the good life now and not only protects their home but mine as well. She does not like it if a strange car comes into my driveway.

Both John and Joan love Pocono Farms and are thrilled with the advancements that have been made over the years and for the increased number of activities that are offered for residents of all ages and interests. They look forward to retirement and becoming full time residents.

His accomplishment was celebrated in a Court of Honor Sunday May 24th, 2014 at Camp Minsi on PA route 940. He is a member of Troop 94 Chartered by the Tobyhanna Township Volunteer Fire Co. Elia enlisted the help of his troop, Family & friends to clean up the waterfront and make a picnic area at the Wiley Preserve adjacent to the Coolbaugh Township Recycling Center. Total hours spent Rebuilding the trail was 176 hours. Elia is a Member of Most Holy Trinity in Mt. Pocono. He is a sophomore at Pocono Mountain West High School & MCTI where he is learning Automotive Technology. Elia is the son of Raffaele Taddeo and Jean Marie Taddeo From Tobyhanna.

Ever wonder why there needs to be so many rules in golf and how many recreational golfers actually know all the rules? There are basically 34 rules of golf however there are also over 100 sections and subsections with over 2000 explanatory decisions giving golf the most complicated rules of any sport.

Rules should be there to keep the game honest but certainly not to penalize the player for something that might happen on the course that is totally out of the players’ control, like landing on a fast, sloping green and having the wind move the ball after you addressed it causing a stroke penalty. Another good one is having to play the ball out of someone else’s divot. A divot should be considered ground under repair. Is it your fault that a player ahead of you landed in the exact same spot but took a huge junk out of the fairway on his next shot making a change in conditions for those players coming after him?

Golf is hard enough to play without having to contend with some of the stupidest rules in sports.

Another good one, if you hit into a lateral hazard it’s a stroke penalty however, if the lateral hazard is actually out of bounds, it’s stroke and distance.

The same shot has a different penalty based on the color of the stake? Or if you hit a fantastic drive straight down the middle and it hits a sprinkler head and bounces across the fairway out of bounds, you have to come back to the tee and take a penalty.

However, if you swing and completely miss the ball on your first shot, you’re now playing your second shot. Grounding your club in a hazard – two stroke penalty – the hazard is part of the environment so what’s the issue? Another favorite of mine, grazing a leaf during your backstroke while hitting out of a lateral hazard – two stroke penalty.

And what’s with the rule saying you’re only allowed to carry fourteen clubs in your bag. With all the new specialty clubs on the market, you need at least 20 to get the job done and who cares, as long as you’re not asking anyone else to carry your bag.

Perhaps this rule is for the cart guys so they all don’t end up with hernias by the end of the season.

Personally I use the same 4 clubs throughout the entire round so don’t ask me why I have so many clubs in my bag; I think it makes me look like I know what I’m doing but anyone who has ever seen me play knows that’s quite the opposite.

I think there should be two sets of rules, one for the professionals and one for the recreational golfer. There should only be about 6 rules for the recreational golfer. My picks would be as follows: 1.

Count every stroke No mulligans Sink every putt Record all scores – good or bad When your ball goes into a hazard or out of bounds, drop a ball at the point of entry and play from there. No going back to the tee to rehit 6. If your ball is in a divot, or by a rock or stump, in a hole, plugged, or on a dirt patch on the fairway, you should be able to move your ball, but no closer to the hole, without penalty.

I understand that knowing the rules can also help you in certain situations however there are just so many interpretations that one needs to carry a pro in your back pocket to keep on top of things.

Golf is a great game, a wonderful way to get out in the fresh air, enjoy the beautiful scenery of our course, and have a great time with wonderful friends. Why spoil it by playing by the rules!
