WITH MEMBERSHIP EMPOWERMENT COMES RESPONSIBILITIES
Serving on our Board of Directors is a privilege that carries great responsibilities to all of our members.
Pocono Farms is different from a lot of other communities. Our Bylaws give our Board of Directors certain powers but do not give absolute financial power. Our Board cannot raise dues without membership approval except for the option of increasing dues by the Social Security COLA percentage. Special assessments can only be approved by a membership vote.
But how do you fulfill all of your responsibilities to our membership when you get little or no feedback? All nine members of our Board of Directors love living in Pocono Farms or they wouldn’t spend their free time trying to make things better for all of us. Volunteer Board Members hate to say no to anyone but our resources are limited. Most issues coming before your Board are routine operational matters dealing with health and safety issues. We must obey all laws and regulations. Safety is our number one priority for our employees, our members and their guests. No discretion here. We have some really fine amenities that we have a corporate responsibility to maintain. Again, no discretion.

How do we best spend our discretionary funds? What does our membership really want? What are the most important issues that our membership wants their Board of Directors to address? What will get the most bang for the buck? How do we fit these expenditures into a longer range plan? If not this year, when does something get funded?

Personally, I have felt lost at times when it comes to serving our membership on discretionary issues.
Where is the voice of the people? Few members, if any, attend our monthly Board Meetings. Not Greens Superintendent Adam Herman that many attend the periodic Community Update/ 894-4435 adamh@poconofarms.com Town Hall Meetings. At our annual meeting in July, Chef pfchef@poconofarms.com we have less than 15% of eligible members voting 894-4435 ext. 130 for our entire community. Your Board of Directors needs to hear from you during the year. Operating without our membership’s input is not the best way to operate. Help your Board of Directors. Come to Board meetings and learn what challenges we are all facing. Give us your opinions, concerns and suggestions. Input from our membership is ingrained in our governing documents and is always on our meeting agendas. You should participate in any Community Update/Town Hall Meetings. You should ask questions and give us your opinions. You should be part of shaping the future direction of our Community. The Farms belongs to all of us. Bottom Line. Your Board of Directors needs feedback from our members and recommendations from our Committees to make more informed decisions.

As members, we just can’t vote NO on any dues increases because we don’t want to pay more. That is irresponsible. With the power to control the annual dues comes the responsibility to provide sufficient resources to fund current operations and replacement reserves. We, the members, have a responsibility to seriously consider any proposals from our Board of Directors for dues increases for operations and replacement reserves and any special assessments. Funding operations ensures all mandatory expenses are covered and quality of life programs can continue. Adequate replacement reserves offset the need for large special assessments. We have a legal responsibility to maintain our common property. Financial stability should make our community more attractive to prospective buyers. We may have to pay more now to keep the Farms moving forward. Providing the right amount of funding will pay off in the long run and benefit our entire Community.

PARTNERSHIP FOR SUCCESS
FINAL THOUGHTS
As members, we have an obligation to help the Board understand what our membership wants. On the other hand, our elected Board of Directors must earn our trust and faith when it comes to proposing voting issues for membership approval. The Board must do its best to propose voting issues that are credible, relevant and in the best interest of our community. The Board must work to sell this to our Community. Majority rules and we all must move forward.
Whether we did extensive research or no research, we are members of a planned community with extensive amenities that we are collectively responsible for their care. Knowingly or unknowingly, we have bought into this entire amenity package. So, enjoy all that the Farms has to offer as you and your family go through the different stages of your life. Take advantage of them.

Thoughts from the Manager By Dave Timko
At the time of this writing, June 7, 2016, summer is quickly approaching. With the lack of snow days this year, all schools are out. We were prepared for this as the outdoor pool opened for the season on June 4th and our recreation department hosted 45 kids for the mini day camp kickoff. This summer is going to be our longest summer in a long time. We will have all of the normal summer activities open full time for just about 13 weeks. This gives everyone the chance to attend something. Our event and recreation staff has planned a summer full of events for all ages. Please look for our weekly email blasts and announcements of the events and activities in your Weathervane.
property just to speak to them briefly about all of the opportunities within Pocono Farms. We are actually having a reception in July as a meet and greet for new members. We hope to have a good turnout. In closing, all we ask is that you take a look at what we have to offer. If you see an event that appeals to you, give it a try. We would love to see some new faces at our programs. After all, we do this for you. Have a safe and enjoyable summer!!

The more members that participate in our events the better the experience is for everyone. We want new and long term members to bring their families out to these events and take the opportunity to meet one another. That is what living in a community is all about. Our function as staff is to create the opportunities for our members to get together. If you have any ideas for events or activities that you would like, please let us know. Our door is always open. We know we have many new members that have purchased homes in the past 2 years. We need to reach out and get these new members involved. We have a group of members that have been trying to reach out to those that have purchased

Notes from A&B By A. Furman
High Gr ass In my brief time since taking over the Compliance Director duties here at Pocono Farms, the biggest complaint I have received by FAR is high grass. Our Administrative Code Chapter 106 requires all lawns to be mowed to a height of no more than 4 inches and weeds must also be controlled. It is very frustrating to see a neighbor’s lawn growing over 18 inches high while the majority of residents on that entire street are maintaining their properties. Also it is not just your front lawn that must be mowed, but the entire property. Front, back, sand mound and the swales by the road. Not only is this a distraction to the entire neighborhood, but from the Public Safety perspective it SCREAMS no one is home. However, the fine a homeowner may receive is actually higher than paying someone to cut the lawn. In addition, high grass is a safe haven for snakes, mice, ticks and all kinds of creepy crawlies. So remember, the next time you look at your high grass or weeds, think about this article. I thank you in advance for your compliance.
Crime Watch Activity Report BY RUSS KELLY
Summer is upon us and most of our snowbirds are back on their patrols. Summer opens up a lot of fun things for us to do but not so much fun is keeping up with the grass and weeds that also come along for the season. Several years ago the Architectural & Building Committee asked us to work with them in keeping the quality of the community at its highest possible level. Since then, many of our drivers will report certain obvious non-compliance situations, as they are seen while driving through the community. Primary among these are poorly kept lawns or areas around a home, propane or oil tanks that are not shielded by bushes, lattice or other approved methods, trash cans left at curbside for longer than 24 hours, etc. The reminders you receive hopefully will be received knowing they are only meant to help keep our community up to par. In May, fourteen drivers were on patrol for seventy-eight hours. Little by little we are increasing patrol hours; there are still a few more volunteers that may have not returned from their winter quarters, so a few more hours a month can be anticipated. Once a year, and normally in June, all the drivers get together for a luncheon at the Clubhouse. We try to get an appropriate speaker to help us benefit the most from our volunteers or just say hello to those we only see infrequently. One of the tips a former burglar gave was to use a loud television or radio as a deterrent. There are devices that can be purchased that will stimulate TV flicker for a relatively low price. As always, we continue to look for more volunteers. A few more hours a month keeping eyes on the community can only help keep Pocono Farms the place we want it to be. Interested in volunteering: Call Ed Aalbue at 570-894-8071 or Russ Kelly at 570-894-4034 or the Administration Office and they will get in contact with us.

COMMUNITY GARDEN By Linda Penett Our Community Garden celebrated the opening of the 2016 growing season on Sunday, May 15th. Wayne Ross from Ross & Ross Nurseries was on hand bringing with him an assortment of plants. I only wish I had brought my camera so that I could have taken pictures of us purchasing items to plant in the middle of a snow blizzard with a heavy frost forecasted for that evening. Only up on the mountain! One minute there was beautiful blue sky, the next freezing rain, hail and, at times, pretty heavy snow. It was wonderful that so many box holders came out to support the garden opening. We look forward to hopefully a great growing season again this year. To all box holders, please remember to keep your box and the area surrounding it free and clear of weeds and harvest your produce when necessary. SEE YOU AT THE GARDEN

Fit Tips BY caty davalos, fitness director
THE BENEFITS OF WATER AEROBICS EXERCISE Summer is finally here and what can be a better way to embrace the warm weather than to bring your exercising to the pool! Water Aerobics is a fun and effective way to work out without the added stress to your body, especially your joints. The exercises are often considered a low-intensity aerobics workout that offers multiple benefits for any fitness level. The most appealing aspects of Water Aerobics classes are that they are a low impact and more discrete way to improve your strength and cardio vascular fitness level while still burning calories. Please continue reading to learn more about these benefits. Low Impact Reports from the American Council on Exercise show that water makes you feel about 90 percent lighter. When you jump or run in the water, your body does not experience the same impact with these exercises than when performed on land. This makes water exercise an ideal activity for those with arthritis, back problems, foot or leg injuries, and knee conditions. Pregnant women and the obese can also benefit from the reduced impact. Just be sure to have clearance from your doctor.
More Discrete Some may find group exercise to be intimidating because of complex choreography or mirrored studios. The pool offers some discretion since most moves are performed underwater and only you know if you missed a step or lack coordination. Calorie Burn Depending on how hard you work, your fitness level and the format being provided you can burn between 300 and 500 calories according to the Aquatic Exercise Association. The amount of calories you burn will depend on your size, the intensity of your movements, as well as water temperature and depth. Movement’s incorporating the upper and lower body together tends to burn the most calories. Never work beyond your fitness level to get more of a calorie burn, this can cause injury. Take your time to progress and over time you will move easier and faster. Work at your own pace for a safe and effective workout. Strength Since you are in the water, your body will work more since your body feels lighter. Simply kicking and cupping the water helps contribute to muscle development, which translates into a higher metabolism and healthier body. Push-ups or triceps dips performed on the pool deck also help build strength.
If you wish to give Water Exercise a try, please join our Water Class at the pool on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 10 am. Please remember to have your badge handy at all times and to bring with you a noodle and light hand weights. Gym Membership is not required to participate.

Bicycle Safety Tips BY a. furman
I have noticed an increase in pedestrian and bicycle traffic on our roadways. With the warmer weather, everyone likes to get out and take a walk or a bike ride. It is a perfect time to remind both pedestrians and motorists of some laws and general courtesies to follow:
•
Pedestrians: •
Always walk facing oncoming traffic.
•
Walk as far off the roadway as possible
•
While walking keep your head up and pay attention to vehicular traffic.
•
At dusk or at night wear light colored clothing.
•
Also in times of low light, carry a flashlight.
Child or adult, you should always wear a helmet.
Motorists: •
Pedestrians and bicyclists have the right of way.
•
Slow down. Obey the posted speed limit.
•
Pay special attention to the roadways around our amenities.
some common courtesy to each other we will enjoy a safe and relaxing summer.
•
Keep distractions to a minimum while driving.
•
Always give pedestrians and bicyclists a wide berth.
Thank you and remember we are always here to help. If you should have any questions or concerns you may call us any time at 570-894-4435 ex. 105, or flag down one of your Public Safety Officers, or stop by and see us at the administration office.
If we all obey the motor vehicle laws and extend
Bicyclists: •
Always ride in the same direction as traffic.
•
Always ride as far to the right as possible.
•
You are expected to obey all traffic laws, i.e. stop at stop signs, signal your turns, etc.
•
If a bicycle will be used at night, lights and reflectors are a MUST.
•
Riders should also wear clothing that is easily seen in low light conditions.
•
It is State Law that children under 12 must wear a helmet. Driver or passenger.
