When we plow the cul-desacs, we plow the snow to the outside in most cases. We do not routinely plow snow to the center of the cul-de-sac or pile it up in the middle.

Our goal in plowing is to keep as much of the road surface clear and open as we can. Plowing snow to the middle of the cul-desac would prevent us from doing that. If the need for an emergency vehicle was required, we want to make sure that they can maneuver

As I am sitting here writing this article on December 1st, I am looking forward to Holiday Season and spending time with family and friends. To my family and I, this is one of the best times of year here at Pocono Farms.

As part of the Holiday Season we will be participating in several of Pocono Farms Holiday events, from the Santa Brunch to the Holiday Party. We will be enjoying the company of the many friend (extended family) we have met at Pocono Farms. I was once asked by a co-worked why travel 100 miles to work in New Jersey and why my commute doesn’t stress me out. My response was “I live in community that is a four-season resort, and much like the show Cheers, where everybody knows my name. I further explained it is truly a place I feel at home.

Our wonderful community offers event and activities for all ages. Please check the events calendar and come meet your fellow residents of Pocono Farms. The restaurant has been transformed in the recent months to become a stylish, warm, and welcoming place to meet friends to enjoy a meal or drink. Katrina and her staff are always glad to see new faces and make you feel at home. Nick, our new Recreations Director, is open to new ideas and will be scheduling events with the Poconos Farms bus. Our staff is always open to new ideas for events, but they need your suggestions.

As fellow members of this community, I ask that everyone take the time to be thankful for family and friends. As part of your New Year’s Resolution make some new friends at Pocono Farms.

I look forward to making some new friends at Pocono Farms as I do every year.

Crime Watch Activity Report

Hopefully everyone had a festive and enjoyable Christmas season. Now, after the New Year’s Eve bash and a headache free New Year’s Day, you can get back to dealing with the ongoing winter. For those of you that enjoy participating in the winter sports and activities, things have started out looking like your wishes have come true. For those of us who no longer get our kicks out of romping in the snow or on the ice, our wishes are still unrealized.

Actually, the snow does help the crime watch patrol, in moderation I should state. Much like hunters who like a little snow cover to help stalk their prey, the patrol can spot footsteps that may show someone may be trying to enter a house thru an uninvited entrance. While this doesn’t happen often, it has happened in the past.

Generally fewer items are submitted to our code official during the winter months. There are always a few unkempt properties, but most places are cleaned up and stuff taken away or stored for the winter. Garbage cans being left out for longer than the evening of the day following pick up or cans put out more than twenty four hours prior to pick up remain as a continuing occurrence. With the possibility of snow, the less clutter in the cull-d-sac’s the better, for ease of plowing. We still see an occasional basketball hoop at the edge of the road.

This only makes keeping the cull-d-sac clear more difficult.

Unfortunately, we still do not have enough drivers to fill out the week’s schedule, even with a couple of drivers doing it twice a week. Now with a few snowbirds gone it’s even more difficult. If you don’t spend all your time skiing, skating, or snowmobiling, why not drive a couple of hours a month, you may even see a prize winning snowman or a yeti. January 2019. The holidays are over and another year is upon us. I for one am glad because of all the weight I seem to have gained. I didn’t notice it until a Hollywood casting director asked me if I would be interested in auditioning for a part in the next Star Wars Movie. I was all excited and asked him which part, he said Jabba the Hut. I think I will just stay here in the Poconos and stay out of Hollywood. Also, I think now is a good time to start on my diet.

I think a good article to start this New Year would be to touch upon permits. There has never been a week that questions have not been asked, or even worse in some cases not asked, about permits. Now some of these have a fee, but many do not. I know I am not going to hit every one we have, but this will cover most of them. Basically any type of structural work that you do to your home, you will need a permit.

Roof, siding, deck, paint, solar panels, all of these things you would need to come to us and apply for a permit BEFORE the work is started.

Things outside of your home, but still on your property, such as, driveway paving, having a structure built or placed; like a garage, shed or gazebo need a permit. Also a dumpster or a POD require a permit.

Now there are specifics to many of the permits. For example the size of the shed, we allow 12 X 12. A garage is limited to 2 car size, to clarify even further it is a total of 2 bays. You cannot have a 1 car garage attached to your home and still have a 2 car garage built. Fences can ONLY be 4 feet tall and they cannot surround the entire property. Many permits have specific color, size, and material restrictions. When applying, those restrictions will be explained.

Well, I hope this helps with any permit confusion. But as always, should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the office or myself. My door is always open.

REFUSE COLLECTION: Curbside pick-up of household trash and recycling is done on Mondays and Tuesdays beginning at 6:00am by County Waste.

County Waste will only pick up household trash and accepted recycling. If you have any other items to discard, please call them at 570-382-3304 to set up arrangements.

Major Holidays that will affect your collection days are: New Years Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, and Christmas. When those holidays fall on a Monday or Tuesday, garbage collection will shift by one day.

ANIMALS: Dogs must be leashed or on owner’s property at all times. Wildlife, such as deer and black bear, are common at Pocono Farms. We ask that you NOT FEED any wild animals.

This is going to be an AMAZING year at the Fitness Center!! We have so much in store for you. New classes, fun workshops, monthly motivation challenges, and more!!

Our first monthly motivation challenge will be our Third Annual New Year New You marathon challenge. This is a fun challenge using both the cardio equipment and class participation to earn your miles. Participants have the entire month to earn their 26.2 miles and at the end we will be giving away fitness related prizes to all who participate and a special prize to those who finish the marathon.

Speaking of classes and trying new things, I love that the new classes we started in December are taking off. It is tough to embrace change but without change we remain stagnant. Change allows us to grow and learn and maybe even try something new.

Something we have been resistant to because we allow our ego to get in the way. I see the smiles on the faces of those who were once irritated. I see the friendships forming because of the increased class participation and I see our instructors beaming as they are helping more people improve their health and fitness. I asked you all to bear with me and you have. I am so appreciative of that. I promise you I will not disappoint you in the coming months. I have so much more up my sleeve!!

For now, I wish you all the happiest of New Year’s. It is a fresh start and a time to wipe the slate clean. It is the beginning of a new chapter, clean pages, what will you write on them?

BY BRIAN CAVANAUGH I would like to begin by wishing everyone a happy, healthy, and prosperous New Year. As we begin the preparation for a new season I would like to thank all of the golf members for their continues support and welcome you back for the 2019 season.

2018’s golf season will go down on the history books as one of the wettest with a total rainfall of over 60 inches. Jeff Lesoine, our superintendent, and his crew did a super job last season under the circumstances, considering the limitations of the equipment and the conditions that they were forced to work under.

As is the ritual every season, the golf committee, consisting of both resident and non-resident golf members volunteering their time to organize and coordinate the workings of operating a golf course. These individual volunteers as well as our community manager, Dave Timko, our golf professional, Kyle Monahan, and our grounds superintendent, Jeff Lesoine, meet once a month to formulate and strategize, always trying to improve the golf experience here at Pocono Farms.

Everything from course management to tournaments, policies, handicaps, scholarships, memberships, and communication are discussed. I had a vague idea of how the committee operated but only until this year when I became a member did I fully appreciate the time and efforts of all involved, Although the course may be under snow for the remainder of the season, the golf committee as well as Pocono Farms management team is still planning and preparing to bring an exciting 2019 schedule of tournaments and events. One of the most important aspects of our golfing community is its membership. Your input and ideas to improve our membership are always welcome. There are still incentives available for the recruitment and retaining of new members. If you have a friend or colleague that may be interested in joining, ask Kyle about new memberships and incentives.

The 2019 golf season will bring with it new rule changes that are sure to be welcome by many. I will allow Kyle to address these changes in a future article. As always the committee meetings are open to all so if you have any ideas or thoughts you would like to share please feel free to come to a meeting and express yourself.

Also if you have the time and are inclined to help improve our golf experience here at Pocono Farms please consider joining the golf committee. All members are welcome to apply.

First off I would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year! Recreation will move into the New Year with some awesome upcoming events! This month we will be hosting the Dart League starting January 13th in the clubhouse on Sundays at 1:00pm. If you would like to sign up please call or email me your team information!

For those of you who may not usually participate in extreme sports, our second bus trip this month is to the Blue Ridge Winery for a catered dinner by ACES Gourmet. The night will include 1 tasting before dinner, dinner with live music, and a free wine glass to take home.

Lastly, we cannot forget about the Chili & Wing Cook-off at the Lakeside Grill and Pub on January 12th this year. You can attend the event to enjoy the delicious wings, or maybe even test your sauce making skills, and enter your very own wing sauce to win either most original or best overall!

As for our bus trip this month we plan to take a trip to Camelback Mountain where we can spend the day skiing, snowboarding, or tubing on Saturday, January 26th. No experience is necessary; camelback offers lessons for all ages above four years old. So come on about and enjoy something new right around the corner.
