Summer is in full swing!! As I write this article, we are just wrapping up the 4th of July weekend of festivities. First, I would like to thank all of the Pocono Farms staff who worked tirelessly in planning, setting up, and implementing all of the activities and food services/delivery. We are very fortunate to have such a great TEAM!!

Second, I would like to thank all of you that came out in support of all of the food functions and events over the July 4th weekend. Although the weather was not the best over the entire four day stretch, all of the staff really does appreciate your support and attendance at these events. It does mean a lot to them to see our members and their families enjoying themselves.

Lastly, there are still plenty of summer events coming up right through the fall season. We don’t stop when Labor Day hits. Although it is nice to use the beautiful outside grounds of Pocono Farms for activities, we take full advantage of our indoor facilities in the late fall and winter to still provide you, the members, activities and events for all ages. With the amount of new members/families that have purchased a home within Pocono Farms in the last two years, our events and activities provide you a great opportunity to meet others and quite possibly establish long lasting friendships.

Your community newspaper, The Weathervane, lists most of the activities going on within Pocono Farms. Our Communication Coordinator also sends out weekly email blasts announcing other programs and offerings. If there is a sign up required, please do so as soon as you can, as sometimes, space is limited and/or we may be limited by an ordering deadline.

Crime Watch Activity Report

The annual community meeting in July will take place after this article has been written. Each year committees are asked to prepare a mission statement and activity report of the previous year.

In the years I have been attending these meetings, the attendance is rarely more than fifteen percent of the property owners. It’s usually a little more if there’s talk of an increase in dues, and a little less if there are no controversial issues on the agenda.

With that in mind, I thought I would include in this article something I put in the committee report. Hopefully there is more than fifteen percent of the property owners that read the Weathervane, else, it would provide no reason to include this in the paper.

Neighborhood watch can be traced back to the early days of America. It was the most effective and least costly way to protect our neighbors.

As both men and women began working, the neighborhoods lost the eyes on protection it had

for years. Burglaries began to rise to the point that the local police forces couldn’t keep up with the needs of the neighborhoods.

In 1972, the National Sheriffs Association created the National Neighborhood Watch program.

It was established to help the police itself and aid law enforcement agencies. Today, many communities have adopted this system. Those that maintain a continuing program have shown to be a safe community.

Most volunteers here at the Farms take their role seriously, although much of the mission seems to now be the eyes of the Architectural and Building committee. We do our best to relate to our code official in instances of poorly maintained property or garbage and trash dumped on the community roads.

This year seems to require more of each of these activities. Occasionally an unusual call comes in. Recently, a driver called in a deer seen in a car located in one of our cul-d-sac’s. I assumed that the animal had jumped in the car when running from something that spooked it. Not so, this deer was put in the car for reasons still unknown. The incident was reported to our security officer. I know it isn’t hunting season.

This is the time of year that new committees are being formed. If you’re interested in joining the Crime Watch Committee, fill out a form and join us. If you would just like to drive around, give me a call at 570-894-4034 or call the office. Drivers patrolled for 80 hours during the month of June.

Keep It Clean - One Block At A Time

As a community, we need to build awareness within Pocono Farms on the benefits and importance of keeping our properties and roads clean. Talk to your children and impress upon them how a clean community increases property values, discourages litter and other crimes, enhances the beauty of the community and reduces pollution. It also protects the wildlife and builds community pride.

Hello everyone. Summer is in full swing and my department is busy (I did tell you I would be enforcing high grass). That being said there are a few things we must go over.

First I know it’s hot out. I know we want to be cool and relax in the pool. The thing is, I have been finding more and more pools here in the Farms. Now a kiddie pool is allowed.

No higher than 18” and no bigger than 6’. For those of you that are not sure if yours is ok or not, here are some basics. If it has a filter, NO. If my 6+ foot, 275 pound frame can soak in it, NO. If it has supports to hold up the sides, NO. If when you fill it the bottom bulges out and the sides swell up, NO. If it takes you longer than 10 minutes with a garden hose to fill it up, then again it’s a NO. Now that we have that cleared up let’s move on to the next big issue. An insert went out with the July invoices, touching on this subject, but we will go a little more in depth here. Our Golf Course, exactly as the name implies, it is for playing golf. So far this year I have had walkers, people walking their dogs, joggers, adults and kids riding their bikes, kids playing football, soccer, catch, tag, basketball and my favorite, just cutting through the course from the pool because they don’t want to take the extra minute or two to walk on the road. All of this has occurred while the course was open.

Are you tired of seeing litter on the side of the roads in and around our community? Us too, so we’ve decided to add a second community-wide clean up day to give you another opportunity to wear your 2017 tee shirts. This event will be held on Saturday, October 21st. More information will be available once we get closer to the date. Although we will not be handing out additional tee shirts, we will be supplying gloves, safety vests, and garbage bags as well as serving refreshments before and after the clean up.

Please participate. Sign up sheets will be available in the Administration Office.

We would also like to take this program one step further and are looking for volunteers to participate in an informal program to periodically clean up certain streets within the Farms that have become magnets for litter. We would structure this program to make it convenient for the volunteer to clean up their designated area at their convenience. Cleaning areas on a regular basis makes the process much easier with less litter to be collected and easier to dispose of. Please consider joining our volunteer group, by helping to get the word out and supporting a Beautiful and Litter Free Pocono Farms. Please contact either myself, Linda Penett, (570) 894-4960, or the Administration Office for more information. Help us take a stand against litter.

We have to be mindful and remember that during our golfing season (basically April through November) during golfing hours (basically dawn till dusk) there should be no one on the course except golfers and golf staff. The reason for this is for your safety and the safety of others. Golfers cannot see you and trust me when I tell you as one who has been hit by a golf ball; you don’t want that to happen. I, the golfers and everyone involved with the course, thanks you for your anticipated cooperation.

Recently, Spyglass and Ottawa Circle were re-paved along with a few other areas within Pocono Farms.

We are in the process of re-evaluating the remaining cul de sacs that need to be paved to create a priority list going forward. We also partner with PA American Water to evaluate their main water line replacement to ensure that we do not re-pave a road that they “may” need to dig up to replace a water line. Sometimes this may cause a road that should be done to be deferred until we can coincide our schedules.

This summer brought another fun filled season for the Pocono Farms swim team. With over 80 kids, our swim team was a force to be reckoned with. Swimmers range in age from 5 to 18 years old, each bringing unique talents to the team. For the swimmers, it’s their sportsmanship and teamwork that was unmatched. For the coaches, it’s been rewarding to see the improvement and skill progression from the kid’s hard work. Some of the swimmers even practice for two hours each day!

There were also mornings when the temperature was in the 50’s with rain and they still got in the water. That’s dedication!

Our biggest and most special event was Laps for Cancer. Or swimmers raised close to $2000 to donate to the Hospice House of Monroe County.

The kids demonstrated great character and heart as they swim laps for anyone who’s been affected by cancer. Parents, swimmers, and the community are the reason the event was so successful.

Thank you to all the coaches Mike Schaefer, Patrick LaBella and our volunteers, Coach Pero, Andrew Riccio, Lilly Stork, and all the 14-andunders who helped the younger swimmers at practice and meets. We appreciate the continued support from everyone and look forward to another great season next year.

I can’t believe it’s already August, July just flew by! The 4th of July festivities were a huge success!

There was so much fun jam packed into the holiday weekend from the pool party, two full days of barbequing, and a ton of activities for the kids. The Freedom Festival alone had about 180 reservations! Overall, the weather was great and everyone had a lot of fun.

A few other great recreational activities we had in July were the Camp Out on the Beach, Tween Night, and Island Reggae Night on the Beach.

Summer camp is going really well this year with a lot of new faces and some old ones too! The first field trip we had was to the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. We had one of the park rangers guide us through the day and teach us all the fun things the park has to offer.

Aquatics Director, hosted numerous activities this year. She kicked off the summer season with Laps for Cancer, Tricky Tray, and another Flick and Float. Also a new program this year is our Fun at the Pool day, which is every Monday from 3:30pm to 4:30pm. Our “Monday Mania” event is a bunch of different pool games from sharks & minnows to treasure hunts. Our “Flippin’ Friday” event is the time to showcase your talents off the diving board with our panel of lifeguard judges. We have also added an Adult Swim, every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 6:00 to 7:00pm and Tuesdays and Thursdays 11:00 to 12:00.

Come out and join the fun.

There is still time to get involved in some of the other activities coming up! We will have another Movie on the Beach scheduled for August 18th.

We will be showing Smurfs: The Lost Village. The Glow Ball Tournament is also the same night. The bocce season will end with our end of summer barbecue on Sunday, August 20th, at the bocce courts. Keep your eyes out for an Elvis Tribute Night in August as well.

On September 9th we are having our Learn to Dance social party and we are planning a bus trip to Celtic Fest on Sunday, September 24th. Stop by the Administration office to sign up for both events. Stay tuned for more event announcements in the next Weathervane!

BY TOM SIROLLY Hello Fellow Golfers, With the golf season in full swing and the heat of the summer upon us, I wanted to call attention to a simple but very important housekeeping matters, the importance of divot and ball repair.

Jeff and his groundskeepers are doing an excellent job in keeping OUR course in great playable shape.

Thank you Jeff and your staff.

But there are two easy steps we members can and should do to help maintain the beauty of our lush fairways and the spectacular greens.

The first is repairing divots in the fairways. Balls that land in unrepaired divots place golfers at a disadvantage.The average golfer makes 30 marks in the fairway during a round; the numbers over a month are astounding. Experts agree on one thing; follow the preference of the club you are playing. If a sand/ mixture is provided on the cart fill the divot with it, (fill the mark and smooth out with your foot). If no mixture is provided, then they want you to replace the turf. In replacing turf, policy is to place the divot so the grass can send down new roots, (replace turf in the same direction it came out and tamp down firmly so the mower won’t pull it back out).

The second is repairing ball marks on the greens.

Imagine how frustrating it is to have your putt running straight towards the bottom of the cup only to have it veer aside because it hit an unrepaired ball mark. Research shows it takes 48 hours for a repaired mark to recover and approximately three weeks if not repaired.

Carry a ball repair tool with you; if you don’t have one or forgot yours, chances are someone else in the group has one. Insert the prongs into the turf at the edges, NOT the depression itself but at the rim. Push the edges towards the center in a gentle twisting motion. DO NOT use the tool as a lever to push the bottom of the mark up to the surface, (this method tears the roots and kills the grass). Gently tamp down the repaired mark with your putter, step back and admire your work. Pat yourself on the back for doing your part in taking care of YOUR Golf Club.

Once you’ve properly repaired your ball mark, repair two others. Remember this is OUR course. Let’s all help to maintain its great condition by utilizing the above simple but important steps.
