As another Board year term comes to a close and we have completed the annual meeting. I would personally like to thank Frank Milano, Steve Bunker, and Wayne Meyers for all that they have done in fulfilling their respective terms on the Board and their contributions to making Pocono Farms a better place for all.

As is done every year, the President prepares a summary that reviews the past 12 months. This year I have chosen to identify certain items within my report and briefly discuss them. The first is strengths.

Although we do have much strength, I believe our most important one is our staff. Our strength is found in the tenure and qualifications of our staff. They continually do well in the day to day operations of the Association. They are always looking at ways to create new programs and events for all members.

They maintain the Association owned facilities so that we all can enjoy them. They deliver top notch professional service to all members and their guests on a regular basis. Even the most recent new hires in golf and recreation compliment the balance of our staff very well.

We have talked about our weaknesses or challenges before. Our bad debt and cash flow stand out as the top two concerns. This Board and future Boards need to stay focused and continue to work with management and others to find solutions to these concerns. This did not happen overnight and there is no silver bullet to remedy the situation immediately. This will be about long term solutions.

Even though we do have our own set of challenges, we have also enjoyed many successes along the way.

One of those is that our Realty office is up and running and enjoying some success as we build a client base and expand our services. As this entity grows, this will be positive for all of us. Once we build the client base and we are able to get into more property management services, this is where we believe we will really start to see the growth.

We have also created theme nights to promote member visits to the Clubhouse. We hosted our first 5K benefit for breast cancer research last October. Our activities /recreation department has developed off property trips to the Casino’s and to the Christmas Show in NYC, along with our bocce and bowling leagues.

We will take many of the learnings from the annual meeting and we will continue to take this feedback into consideration. I would encourage you as members to get involved and become more active. We actively want your feedback and we will look at additional ways of providing a source of gathering this information however it is a challenge when our participation is so low, I strongly encourage you to attend our monthly board meetings and our quarterly town hall updates. All of us have made a choice to live in Pocono Farms. Some live here full time, some on the weekends, others as a vacation home. Some have chosen to retire here and some choose to recreate here. For whatever reason, it’s where we call home for now. Although we may disagree on some solutions or course of action, I think we all can agree that we want what is best for Pocono Farms for ourselves, our children, and our grandchildren. We look forward to another good year at the Farms with the hopes to get more involved.

Thoughts from the Manager

The Community Update that was held on June 27th was attended by about 50 members of the community. The session itself was very informative. It is appreciated that members want to get involved and attend functions like this to learn about what is going on within the Farms.

There is some great information that is shared and distributed at this meeting.

Director. I would personally like to thank the three Directors who have fulfilled their term on the Board. Thank you to Frank Milano, Steve Bunker, and Wayne Meyers. The three of you exemplify what volunteerism truly is and always acted in the best interest of all community members. Stay tuned for future dates of the next Community update. They are very informative and interactive.

Open Door Policy

I have always believed in an open door policy, to discuss issues with our residents. However, some of our residents have taken this open door policy to extremes. Last week, Crime Watch reviewed our community for open garage doors between 4 – 5:30pm for one day. What they found was surprising.

Fourteen (14) different homes within our community had left their garage door open without anyone around. Some of the residents questioned either left to run to the store to buy a few items or went to the post office to mail the last minute thank you card.

The most interesting factor discovered through interviews was that most of these residents felt comfortable doing this and did not think twice about it. Especially since 2/3 of the homes observed, had an entrance into the home through their garage. What people don’t understand is that a professional, once in your home, will take only a few minutes to find those expensive items left in your home.

In addition, most of the residents interviewed also leave their cars unlocked at night, with cell phones, GPS, ezpass and other expensive items in the glove compartment. I have read that in some cases, an individual caught committing a crime could be released, if they can prove they were enticed by the owner into committing the crime.

An example of this would be letting your car run with the doors unlocked, while you’re in a store. In addition, we should not assume our neighbors are watching our homes all the time and will call the police if they see something wrong. So to avoid any future problems, please lock up if you are going to leave your home.

Women’s Club News

In the Farms

The Pocono Farms Women Club would like to take this opportunity to thank all the people that helped with the Tricky Tray on June 19th. We had over 100 baskets and prizes. We want to thank all the women who donated baskets, the merchants who contributed prizes and our caller Donald Sullivan and his helpers (the children that were the runners of the prizes). This is our major fund raiser and we will be able to donate to many of the Monroe County charities because of this.

Our July luncheon was held at the Clubhouse and started around 12:20PM Joan Schipper started the meeting acknowledging Birthdays and Anniversary there were several. Patricia Torregrossa read the minutes from the June meeting which was accepted by Mary Savage and Marie Grott. Lucille Dever the Ways & Means Vice President commented on the Tricky Tray and the outstanding job various women did in getting donations from merchants especially Joan Ludwig and Joan Schipper. Also the way the women of the group came out to help put everything together. Ann Shincovich clarified a question on the property on Hemlock Drive that is owned by the Township and was purchased for the Library, but was then purchased by the Township for Open Space.

Joan Schipper then mentioned that the Women’s Club should support the Swim Team in both its Tricky Tray and Cancer Swim Laps coming up this week-end July 11th. After these announcements Joan had Lorraine Piel lead us in grace and we started lunch. After lunch we had a Power Point presentation from the Coolbaugh Historical Society. Lead by Kay Kinsley and Brian Heverin. They led us through the History of the Historical Society and its location in the Wills Mansion on the Township property. The program was very interesting showing pictures of the Mansion and various events that have taken place there. Coming up on August 22nd is the Art and Music Festival also the Art show running from September 19th for two weeks, they are looking for artists to exhibit their work. We had two winners of our 50/50 and Patti Butler and Dorothy Sirolly were chosen as our next month’s Hostesses’. Meeting adjourned approximately 2:10PM.

Major Holidays that will affect your collection days are: New Years Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, and Christmas. When those holidays fall on a Monday or Tuesday, garbage collection will shift by one day.

Animals: Dogs must be leashed or on owner’s property at all times.

Wildlife, such as deer and black bear, are common at Pocono Farms. We ask that you NOT FEED any wild animals.

Pocono Farms Board of Directors Seek Committee Volunteers

Weathervane DEADLINE NOTICE In order to produce a better newspaper for the Community, a Weathervane submission deadline has been established.

All articles, announcements, classified ads, etc. must be submitted to the Newsletter Coordinator on or before the 5th of each month for publication in the next issue of The Weathervane. Submissions made after this date will not be considered until the following month. Your cooperation is appreciated. Publication of articles is subject to the approval of the Communication Committee.

Get Involved...

JOIN A PFCCA COMMITTEE Committee’s are very important in the overall scope of PFCCA. They act in an advisory capacity with (1) Board member acting as liaison to the specific committee. Each committee needs at least three (3) members, not counting the liaison, to function. The Board understands everyone’s time is at a premium; however, committees are vital in generating thoughts and ideas specific to the committee that he/she is on. A lot of good ideas and recommendations have come out of committee meetings.

So why not apply for one or two committee’s? Current committee descriptions can be found by logging on to the Pocono Farms website (www.poconofarms.com) and clicking on the menu item Board, Management & Committees under the Resources heading.

There are applications available at the Administration Office and online.

Completed committee applications can be dropped off at the Administration Office by August 7, 2015 to be approved at the August Board of Directors meeting.

Please note: If you served on a committee last year, you must reapply each year to be approved by the BOD for the current committee year of service.

Crime Watch Activity Report

Hopefully, by the time you are reading this the Seattle like weather has passed and we are enjoying the summer sunshine. While the rain was good for the grass, not everyone could find a dry period to keep it cut.

This past month our 17 drivers patrolled for 112 hours. On one of those patrols, a resident on Squirrel Circle stopped one our drivers and said someone had fired BB’s at his truck.

He didn’t want to call the police, but was urged to at least let our Public Safety Officer know that it happened. We called out the posse, but no desperado’s were found. “Red Ryder’s” out there somewhere.

We had our annual drivers meeting and luncheon in June. Speakers included Artie Furman, Director of Public Safety, Rich Savage our A&B Code Official, Officer Burke of the Pocono Mountain Regional Police and Dave Timko, our general manager.

Friday August 14th

Artie said most of the reported items were minor, and mostly kid type activities. Rich Savage reported that a few of the empty homes had been sprayed with graffiti. Also noted were several reported calls of unleashed dogs.

Officer Burke congratulated the Crime Watch volunteers for their work and cooperation with the police department. Additionally, Officer Burke spoke about things that people should do to protect themselves. She spoke of a group called “Gypsies” that have been working the east coast.

They primarily prey on older citizens, trying to get personal information or trying to sell them something. One scam involves an individual that keeps you busy talking at the front door while another is getting into the rear of the house and grabbing anything of value that can be reached.

I KNOW THE SECRET!!!

But first, let’s talk about the shaft in your driver.

Did you know if we took all the best 10° driver heads and swung them on a machine with the same exact shaft you would see little to no difference in overall performance. Now, let’s use that same machine, but instead place different shafts on the same driver head. With each shaft change we would see ball flights of all different kinds.

Some would go more to the right and some would go a little left. Some higher, some lower and some LONGER! Every time we changed the shaft we would get a different ball flight. Not only would the ball flight be different but even how the club feels would change. Heavier or lighter, whippy or stiff, picking the right shaft makes a HUGE difference in how a club feels and performs.

Let’s take a deeper look into what the different shaft specifications mean and how they affect your ball flight and distance.

FLEX: Flex refers to the ability of a golf shaft to bend as forces are applied to it during the golf swing. Flex is generally noted by the following ratings: Extra Stiff, Stiff, Regular, Senior and Ladies.

The smooth or more rhythmic swinger puts less twist (or torque) on the shaft then the aggressive swinger does. More torque equals more distance, but too much torque for your swing speed and once again you’ll be spraying it all over the place.

Like a shaft with more flex, a higher torque rating will also make a club feel more whippy.

K ICK POINT: Kickpoint or Bend Profile refers to the part of the shaft where more bending is designed to take place. Kickpoint is noted as being High, Mid or Low. A low kickpoint means the shaft is designed to bend more down by the club head. A high kickpoint is designed to bend more toward the grip end of the shaft.

and make the club feel stiffer. A low kickpoint will help produce a higher ball flight and make the club feel more whippy.

“Enough of this nonsense, what’s the secret to more DISTANCE?” you ask.

It’s the shaft! You need to find a shaft with the most flex, the most torque and the lowest kickpoint possible WITHOUT losing too much accuracy. More flex, more torque and a lower kickpoint will all make that shaft whip through the ball and send it flying deeper into the woods!

If your ball flight is lower than you’d like, your shaft may be too stiff for your swing speed. To get the ball higher, try a friend’s club that has a shaft with more flex. Conversely, try a stiffer shaft if your ball tends to fly too high. Shaft flex also affects accuracy. When the shaft flexes, the position of the club head changes and if the club head is not square at impact...well, lets just say some of us carry a “rock” club! So, too much flex can make you spray it all over the place.

A strong aggressive swinger would need a lower torque rating then someone who swings smoothly.
