One of Orange County’s own notable leaders, Col. Timothy J. LaBarge, Commander of the 105th Airlift Wing of the NY Air National Guard, articulated both of the above as he recently shared his own thoughts on leadership. During a remarkable speech at a Chamber membership breakfast, Col. LaBarge organized a very effective presentation into several “leadership premises,” illustrating each of them with spot-on examples of individuals who personified and practiced these leadership styles. Analysis of “Teddy Roosevelt’s strenuous life approach” gave rise to Col. LaBarge’s first leadership premise “to do diligence to the strenuous life model, which is not to say take the hard road…for masochistic reasons, but take the strenuous path to ensure that you are taking full advantage of your energy and talents and to advance the cause of your organization and society.” Leadership Premise Number Two, he explained, “is to lead in a way that maximizes strategic thought and input and minimizes regret.” Sharing the fascinating story of American author Pat Conroy who came to painfully regret many of his life choices, Col. LaBarge demonstrated how leadership is “not all black and white, and clear cut choices are the exception, not the rule.” Commenting on the hectic, demanding lives that most of us face in 2015, Col. LaBarge said, “Premise Number Three is a tough one for people in this audience, but I would encourage you to not ignore it. It involves bringing balance to the force, just like Luke Skywalker.” Continued on page 11

By making it a competitive contest, employees not only strive to meet their personal goals, but also beat out their fellow employees. We have found that this is far more engaging because of the fun element. Other examples include organizing monthly walks and hikes for our staff. For the beginner, a walk is a perfect way to get moving and become more active. For the more advanced and adventure seeker, a hike might be a better option to keep them engaged and what better place to plan hikes then beautiful Orange County! These are just a few examples of fun and creative ways you can encourage health and wellness for your employees of your business. They can be as formal as you choose to make them for your particular business and require little or no financial investment, but will go a long way in increasing top line revenues while lowering bottom line costs. When your employees are healthy and happy, they perform at their peak and invest in your business as much as you invest in them. With simple and yet effective health and wellness initiatives you can increase morale and productivity while also cutting cost. Healthy employees equal healthy business and as our tagline says, “We want you healthy” and that means at work too.

Orange Pulse Habitat for Humanity Pilots New Live/Work Program

Habitat of Greater Newburgh was one of only four Habitat affiliates chosen for this new national initiative. The live/work model breaks new ground in Habitat for Humanity’s Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative by pairing its homeownership program with small business development. In partnership with low-income families who manage home-based businesses, Habitat can build homes with functional living and business spaces, offering increased employment and income opportunities for potential homeowners. Habitat for Humanity of Greater Newburgh, with the support of a $100,000 grant from the MasterCard Center for Inclusive Growth and Habitat for Humanity, is implementing a work/live home that will incorporate functional space for homeowners to operate a business as well as provide living space. Habitat for Humanity of Greater Newburgh was one of four affiliates across the nation that participated in a grant process to receive training on implementing the work/live model locally based on a successful pilot program in Flint, MI. This incredible opportunity will provide eligible partner families a chance to operate a small or micro-business within their home. At the same time, the new program brings with it potential concerns and questions, such as “Are we setting our families up for failure?” Since Habitat works to place families on the path of success, this opportunity will be no different. The thinking behind this endeavor is that for small business owners, household and business budgets are often inextricably linked. Providing stability and affordability to the housing and the business space gives more opportunity for the business and the family to be successful. Affiliates are required to partner with a business development organization for guidance in selecting viable businesses and providing business, development, and financial training to the partner family. Families selected will have to meet both Habitat Newburgh’s homeownership program requirements, including ability to pay, and the business partner’s criteria for business. Habitat Newburgh is currently working with New York Community Capital, Women’s Enterprise Development Commission (WEDC) and Mount Saint Mary College School of Business. The target area for this new program is the empty lot on Washington Street next to Habitat Newburgh’s headquarters and just north of its recently completed East Parmenter Street Neighborhood. Habitat owns three of the five vacant lots on that site, and will start construction of the Live/Work house with just one property and eventually complete the remaining two. Construction for the first site is planned to begin this spring, per the regulations of the $100,000 implementation grant. Habitat believes this location will connect well with the Liberty Street corridor that is already seeing momentum. The Orange County Chamber of Commerce’s strong business community is perfectly positioned to partner with Habitat’s industrious endeavor. Local economic development can be supported through individual and corporate donations, services in-kind can be offered to help build the house in lieu of monetary input, grants and endowments can be earmarked for sustained support. Imagine a Live/Work “Chamber Build” – the end product of several Chamber members’ combined financial venture.

Julieta Ross, Chief Technology Officer at M&T Bank and one of the original developers of Bluetooth technology, will be the special guest speaker at the Chamber’s Thursday, June 11 Membership Breakfast. Dr. Ross, a native of Buenos Aires, Argentina, spent 13 years with Citibank, holding a variety of regional and global positions. Prior to joining M&T Bank last year, she was Chief Technology Officer/Latin America for CitiBank. When working for Motorola from 1998-2000, Dr. Ross was responsible for many research projects, the most significant one being the first Bluetooth implementation and subsequent development of Bluetooth patents. While she worked with Arpro Technology, she helped develop one of the first Internet search engines. A graduate of the Harvard Business School, Dr. Ross earned her doctorate and master’s degree in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Miami. Being surrounded by yes men is a dangerous construct.” Col. LaBarge noted a passage from Presidential Historian Doris Kearns’ biography of Abraham Lincoln where she describes “Lincoln’s brilliance” in selecting not only his supporters to serve on his Cabinet, but bringing on his rivals as well. “Good leadership,” wrote Kearns, “requires you to surround yourself with people of diverse perspectives who can disagree with you without fear of retaliation.” Moving on to Leadership Premise Number Five, the Commander explained that good leaders make themselves “visible and accessible to the people” they are leading. A Teddy Roosevelt quote once again was appropriate: “The single most important ingredient for success is knowing how to get along with people,” said our 26th President. The Commander elaborated: “All of the brains and skill in the world are of no use if people can’t stand being around you.” Leadership Premise Number Six: “Hold people accountable, as you provide validation at the same time.” Never underestimate the value of recognizing a job well done, Col. LaBarge said, adding that accountability is equally important. The Commander concluded by discussing the leader’s role in managing risk and crisis. He briefly outlined several styles of crisis management – the thunderbolt style, the calm and confident style – but he keyed in on the leadership exhibited in 1970 by NASA Flight Director Gene Kranz. Apollo 13 was on its way to the moon to be the third lunar landing, when the spacecraft experienced a catastrophic failure and the prospect of the astronauts’ safe return to earth was dim. As the apparently doomed spacecraft approached the earth, a NASA administrator commented that “This could be the worst disaster NASA has ever experienced.” Kranz, not missing a beat, said: “With all due respect sir, I believe this is going to be our finest hour.” The ultimate definition of leadership, Col. LaBarge concluded. “A calm, confident retort that indicates that the leadership has the situation under control. They have a vision and a plan of action for successful resolution, and they have supreme confidence in the team of professionals they have surrounded themselves with. For me, it represents the perfect leadership allegory.”

The Evolution Of Websites Clunky. Slow. Rudimentary. Words we associate with the first websites of the early 90s. At the time, of course, they were hailed as a brave new world of marketing. Now, more than 20 years later, we benefit from hindsight when creating websites. A look back at the evolution of website design, while entertaining, also ensures we move forward to keep up with the demands of today’s online user. It was in the 1990s that most of us first learned about the World Wide Web and the very idea of having a “web presence” and a “company website” seemed so foreign. As we first began to surf the net, we didn’t know what “high-speed” internet was. Dial-up modems dictated very slow access to sites with very simple design. Websites
often mimicked corporate brochures and were a read-only experience. All information was expected to fit on your screen. If a website required scrolling, it was considered amateurish or a nuisance. The introduction of Flash in 1996 allowed for design that wasn’t possible with basic HTML, and Flash “intros” usually preceded the home page. By the late 1990s, we saw the beginning of visitor-focused design. Structure, navigation, appearance, and usability became important. New versions of HTML allowed for design elements such as tags for headers, paragraphs, and links. Metatags were all the rage. Even into the early 2000s, sites were built to operate better on certain browsers like Internet Explorer, as well as on PCs. Mac users, like ourselves, often felt like outcasts — especially with online forms. In fact, there are still Mac browsers that are not well supported on various platforms. The use of CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) provided a way to separate content from design. Within layout, elements such as typography, imagery and navigation became important. By the mid-2000s, Flash, JavaScript and asynchronous technologies began to deliver more information in better ways. Usability necessitated better resolution and pixilation, as well as more whitespace and toned down colors. Browsers supported major web standards, so sites operated on IE just as well as Firefox and Chrome. With the addition of database abilities for commercial websites, developers could integrate large amounts of information to visitors in user-friendly formats. Now, when we develop websites, we provide different avenues for users to find the same information. Since everyone thinks

Responsive design allows for easy viewing on monitors of all sizes and shapes, including tablets and mobile. And due to the influence of social media on our internet experience, greater emphasis is now placed on interactivity and social elements, as well as features like location recognition. Additionally, the popularity of scrolling websites is increasing daily, since social media has made us accustomed to scrolling for more information.
