Charting the Changing World of Women in Business By Ellen Daley It is no secret that the status of women in business has changed dramatically over the past 40 years. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 1970, women made up just under 30% of the labor force. Peaking in 1999 at 60% of the workforce, women today account for 47% of those employed in the U.S. By 2020, it is estimated that, once again, women in the workforce will outnumber men. Statistics demonstrate the staggering impact that women-owned businesses have on the U.S. economy: last year, it was estimated that the 8.3 million women-owned businesses in the U.S. generated nearly $1.3 trillion in revenues and employed 7.7 million people (according to a survey commissioned by AmericanExpress).
