As we move into the end of the year and prepare for winter, I cannot help but reflect on the journey that 2020 has been.

Prior to my placement with Locust Lake Village, I asked questions, did computer searches, and talked to the members to see what exactly was the “Heart of Locust Lake Village”. After careful analysis, I knew I was going to manage an association with homeowners who genuinely care about their homes and their association. From the first day I walked into the office, I have listened to the owners, employees, and others that all have the best interest of Locust Lake Village at heart. I am so happy to be part of such a wonderful association and look forward to continuing to work closely with the Board, employee staff, committees, and homeowners.

I have found your Board of Directors listen carefully and put the best interest of the entire community before any personal agenda. These dedicated Board members volunteer their time. They are not on the payroll, nor receive any type of compensation for the hours they put into the association. They pay association fees like every other homeowner. They do all possible to stay the course by abiding by our governing documents and ensure that the members have a voice.

Are there challenges ahead? Of course. Can every issue be addressed and corrected in a heartbeat? No, however your Board of Directors does not avoid sticky issues and strives to ensure transparency on all Locust Lake Village issues.

All the members that I have met, and the entire employee staff, have been supportive and caring. There is an overall dedication from them to be a successful association. I thank all the members who volunteer their time for the betterment of the association.

As we end this year, I want to thank you for the respect, and support I have been shown. Although this has been a very odd year, there is still much to be grateful for and 2021 will only get better! I truly wish all of you a joyous holiday season and a very merry Christmas. Stay safe, healthy, and happy!

Chair’s Message

The 2020 year is nearing its end! Your Board of Directors has experienced one of the most challenging years ever. With the Covid-19 pandemic arriving early in the year, Locust Lake Village had many challenges to endure.

The government closed businesses in our state, forcing us to function via telephone and/or email. Our office staff worked tirelessly, either alone in their office, or from their home, taking calls around the clock.

Functions and events were cancelled, and the short-term rental program came to a halt. Property owners were not able to register golf carts and recreational vehicles in the usual timely manner. During these tough times, we were also challenged to continue our limited operations without a Village Manager, without a Recreation Director, and without a Maintenance Supervisor.

Our dedicated LLV employees gave 200% in assisting the Board during these crazy times. We cannot fail to mention the accomplishments of our recreation committee, preparing events in compliance with government guidelines, while maintaining a safe and healthy environment. We were able to function more smoothly as the year progressed. Despite Century 21 not renewing their lease, we were able to keep the Village financially sound. After extensive work from our Finance and Budget Committee, The Board of Directors was happy to propose a 2021 budget with no increase in dues!

We have had the opportunity to hire a new Village Manager. Judy Kennedy came on board on October 19th, and her qualifications in community management have been an asset to Locust Lake Village. We have also promoted Andrew Tutrone to Maintenance Supervisor, and Regina Williams to Security Chief.

I am preparing this message in November, hoping the month of December will stay calm and healthy. Regardless of our Covid-19 difficulties and concerns, your LLV Board of Directors wishes all of you a very Merry Christmas, or Happy Hanukkah, and a Happy New Year!

Rangers’ Corner This year, our ranger staff endured many changes.

We had one ranger pass away, a couple of rangers retire, a chief resign, and a virus that changed how the community was run. Despite all that, we managed to promote Regina Williams to chief, hire two new rangers, and get our staff back to a semblance of normality.

We are fortunate in Locust Lake to have a security staff that is well-trained, conscientious, and dedicated to the safety of the community. Regina has made several changes in the daily operations, updated equipment, and added new equipment to better serve our residents. We now have daily traffic patrols, and we are stringently enforcing speeding and stop sign infractions. Our goal is to make our roads safe for our children, grandchildren, and pets. Regina has also made sure all our rangers became certified in first aid and CPR. Locust Lake Village is one of the safest communities in the Poconos in which to live.

Our rangers work hard at protecting our properties, keeping our roads safe, patrolling our lakes, and we can be assured that when we go to bed at night, they are looking after us. So, when you see them on the road, wave to them, and if you can, thank them for all they do for us.

For 34 years I told you I’d let you know when it was time.

Pipe Problem Prevention Imagine coming up to your house, only to find it sopping wet because your pipes froze and then burst, sending gallons of water into your house. How can you prevent that from happening?

First, if you will be away for several days this winter, keep your thermostat set between 50-55 F. That way the pipes will not freeze.

Lastly, A Wi-Fi thermostat lets you control and monitor your home’s temperature using your smartphone. If the temperature in your house drops, you’ll get an email or text alert. Other types of alert systems are also available. Some send alerts to your cell phone via a phone jack in your house. Others send an alert to a landline or cell phone. October Was A Fest And A Fright—And A Lot Of Fun

By Fran Odyniec, Former Villager Editor In view of the Covid-19 pandemic, a couple of festive afternoons out in the cool fall mountain air may have been just what the Village needed.

On the weekend of October 10th and 11th, LLV held an Oktoberfest, complete with an Oompah band, pretzels, birch beer and regular beer.

The festivities started on Saturday with a Turkey Trot Golf Tournament at the Chalet golf course, organized by Bob Gettis.

The game was played in pairs and was a perfect start to the day. As usual, there were loaner clubs for those who needed to borrow them. The Tomaselli team won first place, the team of Henkel and McClure came in second, and the Pace team was third.

The LLV Recreation Committee brought in the seven-piece Schutzengiggles Oompah Band that more than set the tone for the afternoon at Locust Lake on Saturday Oct. 10.

Playing before LLVers who showed up with beach chairs or laid claim to festively decorated round tables, the band brought the music of Bavaria and the Alps as well as a sampling of contemporary tunes to the shores of Locust Lake.

“We couldn’t have an Oktoberfest without beer,” said the committee’s cochair Carrie Pohl. “Our tap system worked very well to everyone’s satisfaction.”

the slightly mischievous but amazing creative skills of kids and their families. The 24 pumpkins were judged in four categories: most creative; most scary; most technical, and cutest. There were a lot of pumpkins, so it was a hard call to make, but the winners of the pumpkin carving contest were John Smith for most original, Nicole EsemplareClark for scariest, Willow Flick for cutest and Scott Poluchuck for most technical – you had to see what it looked like in the dark with a candle inside to get the full effect.

Winners each received a gift certificate provided by a local business.

But just before the carvers showed up, the scarecrow competition left everyone with their mouths aghast and chills running up and down their spines. Two lads costumed as baseball players kept folks guessing which team or teams they represented. However, the real chill came from what first appeared to be a ghoulish figure simply reposing on a thronelike chair. Then, without warning, the figure began to move ever so slowly with human like motions.

One could almost hear Dr. Frankenstein off in the distance bellowing, “It’s alive! It’s alive!”

“This was an amazing example of living art,” commented Pohl. “The question on everybody’s mind was, ‘How did they do that?’”

The following weekend was Halloween, the perfect time for ghosts, goblins, and other scary characters to descend on LLV along with golf carts decorated in all sorts of scary dimensions and whimsy.

The golf carts lined up Saturday morning at Pines Lake for a journey around the Village accompanied

by LLV Security Rangers at the head and end of the parade.

“We were pleasantly surprised at the turnout given that the weather was on the cool side,” said Holohan. “It certainly did not chill down the enthusiasm and spirit of the carters.” As the shadows began to stretch at Locust Lake, a legion of

those ghosts, goblins, and other scary characters began to appear on the beach for the Kids Costume Parade and Contest.

Heading into the winter, the Salted Caramel Martini is a great way to relax by the fireplace and unwind. If you like the salty sweet taste of some of those candy bars on the market today, you are guaranteed to love this drink. One of the benefits of this martini is if you like to have a second or third, or even fourth drink, its not a problem because between the Butter Shots Liqueur and the Simple Syrup, it evens out to about 18% Proof.

Before embarking on their ghostly pilgrimage, MC Fran Odyniec asked the assembled multitude, “Where do ghosts like to swim?” Lacking a correct answer, he explained, “In Lake Errieee,” which was met with an unmistakable chorus of groans.

Gift certificates, again provided by a local business, were awarded in three categories: scariest, most original, and funniest, and each child in attendance received a goody bag.

The Halloween festivities were capped off with the Village’s annual “Trick or Treat Night” on Halloween itself.

“Actually, Halloween weekend was a lot of fun,” said Holohan. “We kicked off with our first Halloween Golf Cart Parade, then came the scarecrow competition, pumpkin carving, and kids costume

Thanks to the many volunteers who helped, without whom this couldn’t have pulled this off. Also, thanks to the maintenance crew for picking up and returning the beer keg and setting up the movie screen and tables.

Directions: The Presentation – Rim the glass with Hershey’s Caramel Syrup, then dip the glass in the crushed pretzels upside down on a small plate.

The Drink – Pour equal amounts of Vodka, Butter Shots, and Simple Syrup into an ice filled shaker.

Shake like crazy and strain into the martini glass.

Make a small slit into the Caramel candy and push onto the rim of the glass. Take a picture of your accomplishment and go sit by the fireplace and enjoy with a friend or two!!!

The Spotted Lanternfly Have you seen these interesting looking insects around LLV? This is the Spotted lanternfly (SLF). It is an invasive insect that has spread throughout Pennsylvania since its discovery in Berks County in 2014. SLF feeds on the plant sap of many different plants including grapevines, maples, black walnut, and other important plants in PA. Why You Should Care: SLF is a serious invasive pest with a healthy appetite for our plants and it can be a significant nuisance, affecting the quality of life and enjoyment of the outdoors. If not contained, spotted lanternfly potentially could drain Pennsylvania’s economy of at least $324 million annually, according to a study carried out by economists at Penn State.

The spotted lanternfly uses its piercing-sucking mouthpart to feed on sap from over 70 different plant species. It has a strong preference for economically important plants including grapevines, maple trees, black walnut, birch, willow, and other trees. The feeding damage significantly stresses the plants which can lead to decreased health and potentially death.

SLF is currently found in 26 counties in Pennsylvania, all of which are under a state-imposed quarantine. The quarantine is in place to stop the movement of SLF to new areas within or out of the current quarantine zone and to slow its spread within the quarantine. The quarantine affects vehicles and other conveyances, plant, wood, stone products and outdoor household items. Counties within the quarantine zone: Allegheny, Beaver, Berks, Blair, Bucks, Carbon, Chester, Columbia, Cumberland, Dauphin, Delaware, Huntingdon, Juniata, Lancaster, Lebanon, Lehigh, Luzerne, Mifflin, Monroe, Montgomery, Northampton, Northumberland, Perry, Philadelphia, Schuylkill, York. In addition to Pennsylvania, SLF is also found in New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, and West Virginia.

When transporting your belongings back and forth to your house, especially if this is a vacation house, you should check to make sure you are not transporting the SLF to and from other areas. You should try and kill the SLF if you see it flying or landing on your belongings. If you see their egg sacks on trees, you should try and kill them as well by scraping the egg sack off the tree into a bad with some rubbing alcohol in it.
