Locust Lake Anglers Club Announcements: The Kids’ Trout Fishing Contest was held on May 29th at East Lake from 1-3 PM. The scheduled contest time of 9-11 AM was pushed back due to rain. There were 128 kids that registered for the contest. First Place - Sawyer Templeton with a 3 lb. 14 oz. trout / Second Place - Austin Pierce with a 3 lb. 8 oz. trout / Third Place tie - Michael Clark and Chase Clark each with a 2 lb. 14 oz. trout. Other nice trout were caught and weighed. Great job young anglers! Every kid that registered for the contest won a prize.

Special thanks to Bob Leonard, Phil Cerbara, Pat Foley, Randy Easterday, Tom & Anne Rafter, Bob & Diane Wolek, and Joe McCusker for setting up, organizing, and running the contest along with Bob & Diane Wolek and Tom & Anne Rafter for obtaining all of the prizes for the contest and also the Timberline Pocono Boat House for giving us discounts on the prizes purchased - Timberline was also very generous and donated prizes. Special thanks to the following for their prize donations to the contest: Bob & Helen Leonard - 2 rod & reel combos and 3 fishing nets, Phil Cerbara - rod & reel combo, 3 fishing nets, and 3 bait buckets, Mike & Sue Petro - 2 rod & reel combos, and Dave Chorney - rod & reel combo, minnow net, and container of fishing hooks.

Our summer season has finally arrived. I’m sure we all have concerns regarding the Covid pandemic but are also very happy that our government restrictions have been lifted at this time. The LLV recreation manager, and our recreation committee has been able to create a summer schedule with plenty of events and activities. We thank all our volunteers who help out making this possible.

The 2021 season has been extremely busy. Homeowners and Renters have kept the Village busy since the warm weather arrived. Our Security department urges everyone to comply with the LLV rules and regulations. Be advised that citations will be issued to those who fail to comply.

“Helping Hand” Locust Lake Village is pleased to announce a new program called “Helping Hand”. It is a small group of volunteers who will be on call to assist those who are elderly, disabled, recovering from surgery or not feeling well enough to accomplish a task. Here are a couple of examples we can help with: Pick up something at a local store if the resident is unable to do so. Correct something on the outside of the home if they have been unable to do so, for example change a light bulb at the front door. Manager’s Report

By Judy Kennedy, Community Manager This last year has most certainly been a trying one.

Since joining your association on October 19th, 2020, I genuinely appreciate the support that I have received from the Board of Directors, volunteers, committee members, homeowners and of course the entire staff, all of which work diligently in keeping your village moving forward.

There are many challenges that community associations face however; I must say that your association does surpass those that I have managed in the course of my many years in this industry.

Kindly remember that this is a true team effort and as such I would like to thank everyone for their sincere condolences on the loss of our long-standing employee, friend, and team member, Lillian Bellis. We deeply appreciate all of your understanding, and we

know the loss is felt within the entire village. We plan on honoring Lillian with a plaque which will be placed at the administrative building in her memory.

Although several items have been addressed - there are still several that continue to be addressed on a daily basis.

For starters, we were able to open the ski-hill for the first time in several years due to the gracious assistance and efforts of volunteers, and the maintenance and security staff – and of course Mother Nature for providing us with the necessary ample snowfall. We are in the process of readdressing the expansion of the Chalet parking lot, as well as the Pines Lake parking lot.

There have been continued discussions regarding the front gate project, which at this time is only to obtain estimates for the projected costs attached.

I would like to wish the upcoming candidates who are running this year all of the best and thank them for choosing to join this Board in their continued efforts.

The 2020 Audit has been finalized and is posted on the official LLV Website (www. locustlakevillage.org).

Tom Rezner is Back!

You‘ve seen him in the Village, he’s helped you at the compactors, been a “Caller” at Bingo, fished and done archery with us. Tom Rezner has battled his way back after fighting COVID-19 for several months. It was touch and go for sure and to celebrate his return his family had a get together. It was a happy time, and full of surprises. To mark the milestone Tom’s yearbooks were on display with pictures of “Raz”. And then Tom had an incredible visitor to wish him Happy Birthday! Yes, The King showed up in person and sang many of his hits. As a tribute to Tom and to the way he lives his life Elvis did a rendition of “My Way”! Welcome back Tom Terrific.

SAVE THAT LAKE! What YOU can do to preserve water quality Pristine waters and undisturbed shorelines add beauty and diversity to the landscape and enhance recreational opportunities throughout the year.

In undisturbed watersheds, nature purifies water flowing into lakes and streams. When we alter watersheds to clear land and build houses, we impair the process of natural purification. Consequently, we must all assume responsibility for maintaining water quality.

This pamphlet explains how lakes and streams are affected by our use of land and how we can protect water quality for our own future and for generations to come.

What you can do You should preserve or mimic as many natural processes in the watershed as possible, so that nature can accomplish its water purification task: • Leave natural buffer strips of trees and other vegetation along banks of lakes and streams.

• Avoid disturbing natural soil by extensive site clearing, paving, etc.

• Direct surface runoff into natural depressions where water can seep into the ground slowly.

• Minimize the use of harmful chemicals.

A general principle: avoid doing anything to any lake that you would not do to your own swimming pool or drinking water supply.

Algal blooms turn water a cloudy green or brown, deplete the water's oxygen supply, and have an unpleasant smell. They alter wildlife habitat, reduce the recreational appeal of the lake, and depress property values.

Once polluted, a lake recovers slowly if at all. Unlike rivers and streams, lakes are slow to exchange their water and sediments build up. Water quality will not improve until specific actions are taken to reduce sources of phosphorus in the watershed.

What is a watershed?

A watershed consists of all the land which contributes water to a lake - it involves far more than just the shoreline. To outline watershed boundaries, connect the points of highest elevation around a lake on a topographic map. Water falling within this "catchment basin" flows by gravity, in streams and groundwater, to the lake.

A lake's watershed. The consequences of even distant land uses eventually drain into the lake, although often Indirectly through brooks and streams.

Any substance within the watershed which can be transported by water eventually reaches the lake and affects water quality. It is not only shoreline use, but activities anywhere within a lake's watershed which affect water quality.

The phosphorus factor Excessive phosphorus is the primary cause of degraded lake water quality. Phosphorus is a fertilizer. It promotes plant growth in lakes, just as it does in home gardens. However, in lakes the crop is algae, and sometimes aquatic plants, rather than garden vegetables.

Every lake can receive a limited amount of phosphorus from the watershed without unwanted effects on water quality. However, if the amount of phosphorus flowing into the lake increases and stays above normal, the lake will become overfertilized and produce excessive amounts of algae.

A significant source of phosphorus in some areas is eroded soil washed into the lake due to lack of appropriate vegetation.

Link to land development Dramatic changes occur when forestland is cleared and developed, especially when the natural vegetation buffer along shorelines and streambanks is removed. Without vegetative cover to catch and store rainfall, more water reaches the ground quickly. Paved areas and buildings reduce the amount of soil to absorb water. As a result, surface water accumulates quickly in developed watersheds and runs off in much greater volume than it did prior to clearing and development.

The increase in surface runoff accelerates the erosion of soil. Since sediment carries phosphorus, soil erosion is a significant source of phosphorus in developed watersheds. Also, phosphorus is more easily washed from the smooth surfaces common in developed watersheds, such as driveways and cleared waterfronts and hillsides.

It has been scientifically shown that the increased volume of water running off developed land contains much higher amounts of phosphorus than runoff from undisturbed woodland. This phosphorus comes from eroded soil, lawn fertilizers, road dust, grass clippings, yard debris, pet droppings, motor oil, effluent from failing septic systems, and other sources.

A recent study in Maine found that even careful development of woodland into 2- acre houselots caused a two-to ten-fold increase in phosphorus concentrations in stormwater runoff alone. (Sewage was not a factor, since all houses were connected to a system that carried sewage away from the watershed to a treatment plant).

Activity Do’s & Dont’s Reason • Do keep site disburbance to a minimum, especially removal of natural vegetation and exposure of bare soil. Seed and mulch bare soil within two weeks of clearing and install hay bales down slope of cleared areas.

• Do leave naturally vegetated areas (buffer strips) along lake shores, streambeds, road ditches, intermittent streams. An undisturbed buffer width of 100 feet is suggested, with more on steep slopes or erodible soils such as fine silts or clays.

• Do plant deep rooted, woody, native vegetation along lake shores, streambeds, and road ditches.

• Do preserve natural topography (lay of the land) and drainage systems.

• Do use fertilizer sparingly. Avoid large single doses. Hay mulch is preferable. Consult with Penn State Cooperative Extension Service.

• Don't use herbicides and pesticides in excess on your garden and lawn. Avoid their use if possible.

• Don’t put leaves, branches or any kind of organic matter into the lake.

• Site disturbance dramatically increases surface runoff and erosion which contributes phosphorus to lakes. Hay bales trap sediments and the phosphorus they carry.

• Buffer strips intercept runoff and filter sediment and phosphorus from water before it reaches the lake or stream.

• Plant roots stabilize the shoreline, prevent erosion, and take up nutrients carried by water before they reach the lake.

• Natural drainage systems evolve over years and effectively control sediment and phosphorus.

• Solid, inorganic fertilizers are readily dissolved by water and transported in runoff.

• Many of these products are toxic to fish and wildlife and can get into the water.

• Plant debris adds phosphorus and other nutrients directly to the lake.

Shoreline changes

• Do leave existing rocks in place along the shore. Plant vegetation for erosion control, or use riprap as a last resort.

• Do minimize shoreline alteration, such as removal of vegetation, construction of piers, breakwaters, etc. (DEP permit required for shoreline alterations and work beyond mean water level. MCCD approval may be required as well).

• Large rocks are the most effective buffer against erosion because they diffuse wave action.

• Shorelines are generally stable due to years of wind, wave and ice action. Alteration of the natural shoreline destabilizes the shoreline, increases erosion and impairs fish and wildlife habitat. Vegetation offers critical shade that keeps stream and shallow lake water cooler.

Tree cutting, forestry

• Do leave trees and shrubs along the shoreline or streambank. Consult with DEP or MCCD for vegetative cutting restrictions.

• Do leave ground cover plants and natural forest litter intact.

• Don’t manicure the ground underneath larger trees.

• Trees and natural cover best protect against shoreline erosion and sedimentation of lakes. An intricate system of live roots is the net that solidly holds the shoreline together.

Shading of streambeds and near-shore waters promotes cool and stable temperatures important to fish and aquatic life during the summer.

• Do check sludge level in septic tank every year. Pump when sludge fills half of the tank (average is every 2 - 3 years for year-round residents, 5 - 6 years for seasonal residents).

• Do organize neighborhood septic tank pumping.

• Don’t flush strong cleaning agents (drain cleaner, bleach) into your septic system.

• Don’t use your toilet as a wastebasket.

• Don’t install or use an in-sink garbage disposal.

• Don’t use commercial products that claim to clean your septic tank without pumping.

• Septic systems must be maintained if they are to function properly. If settled solids are not removed from the tank, they will wash into and clog the leach field.

• Pumpers usually charge less for large volume jobs.

• Septic tanks are living systems. Strong cleaners kill the microorganisms that break down waste.

• Trash fills up the septic tank quickly and cannot be broken down by microorganisms.

• Kitchen garbage overburdens your septic tank and slows its functions.

• These products can cause clogging of your leach field, and may contain chemicals which can contaminate drinking and lake water.

Detergents

• Do use non-phosphate detergents. (Check the labels on detergents).

• Don't wash anything in the lake (e.g. dishes, your dog, yourself) with soap or a cleaning agent, and don't wash cars or boats near lakes, streams or drainage ditches.

• Phosphate detergents add more phosphorus to the lake, contributing to algal growth.

• These activities will put phosphorus directly into the water.

Runoff should be diverted to vegetated areas and allowed to seep into the ground where phosphorus can be removed.

Runoff from driveways, roofs, lawns, etc.

• Do prevent driveway, roof, lawn, etc. water from running directly into lakes and streams. Detain in depressions or divert flow to flat, wooded areas.

• Flowing water carries phosphorus-laden sediment.

Dispersing water allows it to filter into the soil where sediment and phosphorus are filtered out.

Roads

• Do plant vegetative buffer strips along roads and stabilize road ditches by seeding or riprapping. Use natural vegetation whenever possible.

• Don’t allow water to run directly off roads into lakes or streams.

• Plants slow runoff from the roads and help to remove sediment and phosphorus before they reach lakes or streams.

• Water running off roads contains sediment, phosphorus and pollutants from cars.

Houses, decks, sheds

• Don’t build close to the water. A permit is required to build within 50 feet of a stream.

• Setbacks protect the lake because shoreline disturbance dramatically increases sedimentation in the lake.

Sand beaches

• Don’t build new beaches (placing sand in the lake requires a permit from DEP).

• Sand contains phosphorus. Sand which is not stabilized by vegetation washes into the lake, where it accelerates filling of the lake and provides poor bottom habitat for fish and wildlife.

Filling/ Dredging

• Don’t fill or dredge along the lakeshore unless necessary.

(Both activities are regulated by the DEP, and may require a permit and approval by the MCCD).

• Filling and dredging stir up sediment and impair natural habitat.

Hazardous materials

• Do store hazardous materials in a contained area.

• Don’t dispose of oil, paint thinner or chemical products on the ground.

• Containment prevents contamination of water supplies and lake waters by undetected leaks.

• These products cannot be removed by soil and can contaminate ground water and lake water.

An Anglers Club meeting was held at the LLV Chalet Game Room at 10:00 AM on May 30th. Multiple topics of business and discussions took place. Special thanks to Gary & Pat Facchiano, Jay Pierce, Greg Pierce, Phil Cerbara, Frank Suplick, and Robert Krause for their cash donations to the Anglers Club over the past few months! Please remember to pay Annual Anglers Club dues for 2021 if you have not already done so. Annual club dues are still only $10 dollars.

The Family Fishing Contest is scheduled for Saturday, August 14th from 9:00 - 11:00 AM at Pines Lake. Come out and fish with your family, some of your family, or just by yourself. There will be prizes, snacks, and refreshments.

Please remember to register for the contest at the lake that morning. The Annual Fish Fry has been cancelled. Our next Anglers Club meeting is scheduled for Saturday, September 4th starting at 10:00 AM at the LLV Chalet. There will be multiple topics of discussion during the meeting. Please try to attend.

Please be mindful of the 4 trout daily limit within LLV during the regular season along with catch and release of largemouth bass and the enhanced panfish regulations. Thank you.

LLV Celebrates Independence Weekend

Although Saturday’s weather postponed the golf cart parade until Sunday, we were still able to have a full weekend of celebration.

We had over 50 runners and walkers show up for our first LLV 5k(ish), and Isaac Lambert took first place for time completing the run in 26 minutes and 31 seconds.

Following the run we had our golf cart parade where our villagers continue to display their creativity and craftiness in their decorations for their carts.

After our run and parade, our villagers then settled in for our Independence Day clam bake picnic and finished out the night with music from the DJ, Gary Smith.

Finally, we hosted old-fashioned games for some of the children of Locust Lake Village on the holiday Monday, where they enjoyed sack races, three-legged races, water balloon tosses and more.

When I was just a kid and well before I got my starter set of golf clubs as a gift from my brother, my father used to take me to a “Chip and Putt” also known as “Pitch and Putt” in Levittown, PA. It began a lifelong love of the sport of golf.

They let you use a chipping club (usually a 9 iron) and a putter. We would play at night so the course was lit up!

Locust Lake Archery Club Open House

As the LL Archery Club celebrates its 10th year here in the Village, archery continues to be a great option to enjoy the outdoors, stay safe and improve your hand and eye coordination. Through the pandemic archery has provided an escape for our Archery Club members to get some fresh air, enjoy the setting and shoot some arrows at a variety of targets. So on July 10 we hosted our first Open House of 2021 and had an excellent turnout. Mother Nature provided a fine weather day, we had plenty of targets set up, bows and arrows on the ready and Club Members willing to get shooters off to a good, safe start. Safety is first so Randy Easterday was the Line Ranger for the day and our teaching Members took their time to match up the proper bow with the skill level, age, strength and size of our visiting archers. There were plenty of balloons to burst, racoons to aim at, refreshments.

The LL Archery Club appreciates the support of the Village for our Club and the good attendance for our special events. There are applications at the Office for our $25 Family memberships and we are accepting new members. If you have any questions you can target them to rbgettis@comcast.net
