Locust Lake Archery 2021 By Bob Gettis, Archery President Archery has experienced a resurgence over the last several years partly because of the release of films such as “The Hunger Games,” “Brave,” and “Lord of the Rings”. It has become the 21st century’s golf in terms of leisure.

The Locust Lake Archery Club is entering our 11th year and we continue to make improvements so that our Members have a safe, fun and challenging archery experience. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, archery is one of the safest sports in the country for youth to participate in, featuring less injuries than soccer, golf and baseball. For LL Archery young people must be at least 10 to participate.

The range is now open for Members and an Opening Day is being planned for early May. We have 10 stationary targets and a wide variety of 3-D targets for our special events throughout the season.

The LL Archery Club is accepting new Members for $25. If you would like to join or if you have any questions you can fill out an application at the LL Office or you can email Bob at rbgettis@comcast.net LL Archery On Target!

Your LLV Board is happy to welcome the 2021 Spring season. Our winter was a snowy and cold one, however our staff worked hard keeping our roads serviceable, and also made time to operate our ski hill. We would like to thank all the volunteers who assisted in the operation, and we hope to be prepared for many more snowy winters. Despite the warm weather arriving, we are still hindered by the Covid-19 pandemic. Our recreation committee has worked very hard putting plans together for our usually busy summer season, however the Board urges all of us to stay safe. Social distancing and facemasks are still a mandate in our village. We urge everyone to abide by our rules and regulations. It is only fair to advise all our residents, and visitors that our Security department is encouraged to cite all those who violate LLV rules.

Even though some of our neighboring communities recently struggled with adverse conditions, your Board of Directors is proud that LLV has remained financially sound during tough times. Our dedicated staff of employees work tirelessly keeping LLV a safe and pristine recreation community. We wish all a very happy and healthy Spring and Summer season.

Feathered Friends Birding Club By Bob Gettis, LLV Birder

It was 2 years ago on February 23 that the Feathered Friends Birding Club was formed. A couple of Villagers met Mary and me at the Pines Lake bird blind and had a ribbon cutting ceremony, saw some birds and have been keeping our eyes open ever since. In those two years we have taken many walks in the Village and met up at nearby birding areas of which there are plenty. We have also taken one day trips to Hawk Mountain to look for raptors and Middle Creek Wildlife Preserve in search of snow geese and tundra swan. Locust Lake Village has supported our Club and today we have installed a variety of 29 blue bird, owl, wood duck, American kestrel and bat houses throughout the Village. We have monitored and maintained those houses and have repainted the bird blind. We have also started to add some shrubbery that will attract and encourage birds to winter here in our Village.

We have had the opportunity to share our birding club ideas with our neighbors at Arrowhead and I understand they are beginning to invest in birding. That helps everyone. Recently, The Wildlands Conservancy has made additional investment in the Thomas Darling bird preserve property and will be dedicating a parking lot and trail on Route 940 right across from the Pocono Boat House. Part of their project is to attract more migrating birds to our area which is already recognized as an excellent area for birding. Bringing you the Clean Water you deserve! The attached photo of very special birds was taken on the 2nd Anniversary of The Feathered Friends Club by my wife Mary. Today we have almost 40 members. Manager’s Report By Judy Kennedy, Community Manager

Spring has finally sprung! It is with great relief that we say goodbye to an unusually cold winter with its many snowfalls and ice storms and welcome the warmer days of Spring!

As we leave winter behind, we extend many thanks to both our Maintenance and Security departments. With freezing temperatures and multiple snowstorms our maintenance crew was kept busy, often around the clock to keep our roads cleared and treated in a timely manner. The combined team efforts of both Maintenance and Security during these storms ensured the safety of our members.

Let us also remember the wonderful time everyone had this winter with the Santa Express, the 8th Annual Ice Golf Event, as well as skiing the newly named “Ike Wade Ski Hill”. The ski hill was able to be enjoyed with the assistance of all of the wonderful volunteers, along with the newly formed Ski Club, and our Maintenance staff, making the winter season both an enjoyable and memorable one! While we gear up for the warmer temperatures and activities, we must still follow ongoing COVID-19 safety measures and procedures. The Recreation Committee along with the newly hired seasonal Recreation Director have been working diligently in planning and organizing safe and fun events. Everyone absolutely loved the visit from the Easter Bunny and participating in the Scavenger Hunt! The opening day of trout season was a true success,

with an amazing turnout! The Anglers’ Club always does an outstanding job stocking the lakes and hosting the Annual Kids’ Trout Fishing Contest which is scheduled for May 29th and always a fun time! Special thanks to all of the members who volunteered their time for Earth Day Community Cleanup! There was a total of 32 volunteers that came to help clean up the community as well as a couple of individual homes for fellow members who were physically unable to clean up their property and/or ditches, collecting a total of 176 bags. Please remember that property owners are responsible for the clearing and maintenance of drainage pipes and ditches surrounding their properties. Homeowners who have registered their email address with the administration office are being sent announcements of timely information via email blasts. If you are not already on our email blast list, kindly contact the administration office to be added so you can receive pertinent community information. Please share in my extending many thanks to the continued hard work and efforts of our Administrative staff in addressing the daily operations of our community! We are extremely fortunate to have an amazing team of employees!

As an important reminder, the Rules and Regulations are designed to provide pertinent community information to each owner, tenant, and guest as it relates to their living and use of the community. With extended daylight hours upon us, remember

to put safety first by obeying the speed limit and remaining alert to individuals who will be walking, jogging, and biking. Security Rangers will be aggressively issuing speeding citations.

Members and guests must have their ID wristbands in order to utilize the amenities of the community. All boats, canoes, and inflatable party boats, etc. must be registered at the Administration Office (gas motors are not permitted) and a Pennsylvania fishing license is required to fish on our lakes. Please remember that car registration stickers, and recreational vehicle identification flags are the only acceptable proof of membership for dropping off trash. Wristbands are not utilized as proof of membership at the compactor area.

In closing, I would like to take the time to thank all of the volunteers, committee and club members, employee staff, and the residents for working with myself and the Board of Directors towards the common goal of continuing to move Locust Lake Village forward. This Board needs to be commended for all of their hard work and efforts with addressing all of the community’s concerns and issues. They are making great strides for the betterment of the community. Please join me in thanking them all, both as a whole and individually for their time in serving our community. Wishing everyone a very pleasant and healthy Springtime.

The Spotted Lanternfly By: Bob Christensen

The Spotted Lanternfly is a very invasive and destructive insect that was located in Pennsylvania in 2014. I first noticed them in my yard in the summer of 2020 and started seeing many more throughout the summer. I first thought it was a stink bug and of course did not want to crush it. I later found out it was a SLF and learned of the devastation they can cause. It is highly recommended if you do locate them to kill them immediately. The best method is to simply crush them. They have a very hard shell and simply swatting them does not work. If you see a nest (A. pictured right) it is recommended you thoroughly crush it with something flat such as a credit card and catch the nest and any larvae in a plastic bag, seal it and dispose of it properly. Do not let any part of the nest fall to the ground as the larvae may not be dead and will survive. Pictured right, are the various life stages of the SLF. You can get more information on the SLF through the Penn State and USDA/APHIS websites. Please do your part in preserving the beauty of the Pocono’s by destroying this insect and nest when you see them.

Why We Harass the Canada Geese By Bob Christensen, Lakes & Wildlife Committee Chair

Each year volunteers of the Lakes & Wildlife Committee begin harassing the Canada Goose as early as March. Due to concerns by some LLV members I would like to take the opportunity to educate everyone on why this is a necessary measure.

Back in 2010 a very large number of resident Canada Geese decided to make LLV their home starting in the spring & stayed throughout the summer months. One adult goose can produce up to 1.5 lbs. of feces per day. As a result of the large number of geese East Lake had to be closed due to the high level of E coli. A safe level is 0-235 parts per million & the readings were in the 900 range. Pines Lake was nearly closed with readings of up to 210 ppm. LLV was forced to hire personnel along with our lifeguards to remove the goose feces from the beach & surrounding areas on a daily basis to prevent the closing of Pines Lake. Abundant amounts of goose feces can lead to various sicknesses & diseases such as E Coli, Salmonella, Histoplasmosis, Campylobacter, Coccidia and Giardia. These diseases can affect humans and animals alike. You can explore the dangers of goose droppings on the web. A good site to visit is goodbyegeese.net among many others. During the early summer months geese go into a molting period (shedding of flying feathers) & once this occurs, we are basically stuck with them. To make matters worse if goslings are produced the geese will not leave & become very territorial & aggressive. Yes, they will attack to protect their nest or young. The goslings will return to the area where they were hatched the following year to reproduce causing the numbers to increase year to year.

To prevent this from happening it was decided to look into a safe & legal way of harassment. At that point in time, I volunteered to recruit volunteers to harass the geese in the upcoming season. We met with a representative from the (USDA/APHIS) United States Department of Agriculture & Animal, Plant Health Inspection Service. We were educated on the legal harassment measures & removal of Canadian Geese. The Board of directors also agreed to a required yearly contract with APHIS in an effort to keep our lakes pristine.

Our harassment methods include the use of pyrotechnics referred to as screechers which make a high screeching sound and bangers that produce a very loud bang compatible to a shotgun being shot. There is also a NO feeding of geese or any type of waterfowl policy within LLV. Please adhere to this policy for everyone’s safety & wellbeing.
