The staff at LLV worked very hard to prepare for the Memorial Day weekend and in my opinion, they “hit it out of the park”. The weekend started with the opening Friday night BBQ at the Chalet. The Chalet was clean (as it should be) and everything was functioning as designed. The maintenance crew did a nice job getting the area ready. The kitchen staff (Chef Tom and crew) prepared some of the best ribs and sides that I have ever enjoyed. The Grille Crew; they might not be pretty, but they cooked up a storm and had fun in the process. Recreation: Nicole and Dawn work together as a team to ensure that you enjoyed your evening on the mountain. The water slide was extended and a big hit with the kids, although I think I saw an adult give it a test slide too. The corn hole games were a hit and they were in use all night. The fire globe provided the finishing touch for everyone to enjoy “s’mores”. The best addition of all however was the live entertainment provided by Tom Donovan. The music added the missing touch excitement to make the opening BBQ “special”. 99.5% of the feedback for this evening was more than positive. Of course, these events would not be possible without the assistance of our volunteers. This is truly a community event that everyone can enjoy.

On Saturday, the Anglers club hosted a “kids” fishing contest at East Lake. Ninety-three kids participated with 50+ catching fish. Many family memories were created during this event including the “biggest” trout caught by 10-year-old, Anabel. Her catch was the biggest trout I have ever seen at 5.1lbs. Nice job and thanks for the picture. The best part of this event is that it creates memories and builds a whole new generation of Anglers. Thanks to the Anglers Club for making this a great event. On Saturday night, we hosted a welcome party that gives new members a chance to meet other members and start some new friendships. This event was well attended and appreciated by all.

Sunday provided the climax of the weekend with the Picnic/Clam Bake on the beach from 4PM-7PM followed by the DJ/ Bonfire from 7PM-11PM The picnic as always was a big hit. The clams and shrimp were plentiful. The BBQ crew was in full swing and the Mobile BBQ trailer was unveiled and worked to perfection - three grills, a clean functional working surface, and 3-4 guys cooking up a storm. When the picnic concluded, the party got hot with the fire on the beach and DJ Johnny under the roof. The fire burned all night and provided a gathering spot for friends and family to “stay warm”, catch-up, “de-stress” and make more “s’mores”. DJ Johnny worked the crowd while taking requests and keeping the party on the dance floor. Memorial Day was a big success. I would like to express my heart felt “THANKS” to every one of the Locust Lake staff that helped to make this weekend such a success. If you made it up, I hope you found things in order, well maintained and enjoyable. I hope you were able to de-stress, relax and enjoy the mountain.

I hope this message finds you in good spirits and health. As I have done in previous messages, I would like to thank the entire staff at LLV for their efforts and a “job well done”. They have been challenged to raise the bar, and they have responded. Thank you.

Maintenance Building/yard: The Maintenance building is still a work in progress. Things are much better than 6 months ago, but there is much more to do. I am satisfied with the effort and progress at this time. The yard: The yard was addressed in early April. We had many volunteers give up some time and help with the massive clean-up. We removed the trash, relocated the equipment, built shelves for proper storage, and we worked hard to make that area a place where work can get done. There is more to follow

but we are currently waiting for a feasibility report on the compactor location before more can be completed.

Chalet: Blue Mountain construction is due to begin the project sometime this week, 1st week of June. I can’t wait. We had live entertainment at the opening BBQ (Friday, May 24th) and it made the night special. This summer will be special on the mountain.

Roads: Lake Lane: I’m typing this on Saturday, June 1st and after being advised earlier in the week that Hallett Paving expects to be here in the next two weeks. I won’t rest until this is completed.

Shiffer paving has been in the village and the repairs of the secondary roads should begin in June. The weather is still a factor between rain and mild temperatures, so I expect that to begin later in the month.

The dirt and gravel roads have been receiving constant attention. The weight restrictions that were imposed appear to have helped save them from major failures. We will continue to address this as we move forward into the summer.

Trash: The recycling effort at the dumpster area has been discontinued. To many fines and not enough cooperation. All recycling will be done at the residential locations for LLV residents. Please remember, if you use this service, any violations will result in the can being left without pickup. The compactors are still being worked out. The location was changed to create more room just prior to starting

and it has slowed the process down. We are still working out the details but hope to have the installation done in late summer/ early fall.

Community Maintenance: I’m happy to say, I think we are all caught-up on prior years projects and working on 2019 tasks. Items from spring message; picnic tables built and repaired, beaches cleaned and groomed, snack shops painted and repaired, bocce and horseshoe pits repaired, playground equipment repaired and/ or replaced, BBQs addressed with the Mobile Unit Trailer, all these and more prior year projects have been addressed and corrected.

There are so many topics for discussion, I can’t cover them all and keep this short. I try to explain in detail what is being done in the village at every Board meeting and follow that up at the quarterly town-hall meetings. For those that have participated, I hope I answered your questions/ concerns. I attempt to keep you informed, good or bad, and I provide honest answers and opinions whenever possible. I have been your manager for 10 months

and believe we have moved forward in a positive direction. For months, I have been “pushing” everyone, including myself to “get things done”. My goal was/ is to simply get “caught up”, then move forward and continue to improve the village. Cooperation and observance of community rules is always going to be an issue. The rules aren’t in place to stop people from doing anything, they are in place to ensure they are done safely in an effort to protect everyone and LLV. Please follow the rules and regulations and when in doubt, call the office and do it right. Dog owners, please be responsible and pick up after your dog.

Now that things are “caughtup”, I won’t be in the field as often but my enthusiasm to get things done will continue to burn “white hot”. I look forward to a good summer season filled with family adventures. Everything is up and running in the village for your enjoyment. If you haven’t gotten involved before, please come out, participate, socialize and enjoy. We have so much to be thankful for, come out and smell the roses. Summer 2019! Again, we encountered a rainy and cool spring season. Despite how much effort was put into preparing for a successful summer season, we always By Al Markin, Board Chair find more to do hoping to surpass previous years. Your Board of Directors strongly supports your Village Manager, Don Fantry while he strives for awesome goals. The staff of employees seems tuned into success as well, and they all appear to be giving 110%. I’m writing this report, weeks before it will be published, but I am hoping Lake Lane is repaved and striped by now! I am also hoping our new signs and landscape updates enhance the appearance of our main entrance. As the summer arrives, you are encouraged to attend your annual meeting to be held on July 21st. This meeting will allow all property owners in good standing to express their needs and concerns, regarding LLV matters. This meeting will be very well attended, and all our committee chairs make a great effort to inform us of their new goals, and their accomplishments in the past year. I am hoping to have all of our LLV clubs represented as well. For those not aware, we have various clubs offering events throughout the year.

I occasionally forget to report notable items. At this time, I am proud to have the honor of being Board Chair since August 2018. What makes this so notable is the fine team of directors we have in place in our LLV community. Our entire nineperson board has worked tirelessly, addressing numerous issues and matters throughout the entire year. I am happy to say that for the most part, our board keeps in harmony and we make every attempt to keep our Village running properly. Last but not least, your Board of Directors will have three openings to be filled this summer. Nominations will be announced, and LLV will have a meet the candidates night as well. I urge each and every property owner who is in good standing to make an effort to vote. Your Board of Directors make every effort to maintain our community’s outstanding reputation. I hope each and every one of you have a great, happy, and healthy summer season!

Locust Lake Archery Club Enters 9th Year and is “Right on Target”! It was 2011 when the Locust Lake Board gave a handful of Villagers the go ahead to establish a Club for archery. That included an area nearby the top of the sledding hill in the brush burning area for the Range. Among the handful of charter members there was certainly interest and we felt reasonably confident there would be interest within the Village. The range is naturally framed with a wall of rock and a grove of various trees, a perfect setting. Not long after we prepared the range for shooting lanes

and targets we had our first Open House and that was the beginning of fulfilling our continuing Mission which includes “to educate and encourage anyone who has an interest in the sport of archery to come see what the Club has to offer” . Through these years we have had the support of the Board, our active members and the Village! And the popularity of Archery at the Summer Olympics and the series of Hunger Games movies has also promoted interest in the sport. Our membership

is made up of families and individuals that like target shooting and/or hunting so we have designed our events and the range to provide a safe and challenging environment to get better. We’ve invited experts in the areas of traditional bow making and taxidermy to educate and entertain at our Open Houses and a number of our members are archers at a high level that help give beginners and novices the assistance they need to be comfortable with the basics and hone their skills. Each

year we host the archery hunting qualifying event which allows hunters to prove their skills so that they are eligible to hunt in the designated areas in Locust Lake that season. These areas are referred to as the DMAP. Archery Club is also a social club and we have done some road trips to Hawk Mountain, Cabela’s, an eagle watching trip, Native American Pow Wow, and Pocono Downs.

Our fundraiser each year is a dinner/dance at the Chalet and this year on July 20 our theme is American Bandstand. We have been pleased with the turnout for our Open Houses and have continued to add target lanes at various lengths and elevations to have enough lanes for the turnout and challenging targets for the more experienced archers. For the younger shooters we have established a separate area where rubber tipped arrows are always used. Our safety rangers oversee each round of live shooting and when you hear “Range is Hot” all archers are behind the shooting lane with arrows pointed down the range! With the support of the Village and the Club’s fund raising efforts

we now have ten target lanes, 3D targets, bows and arrows that are “state of the sport” and safe for all types of bows and shooting. We have storage areas to safely store the equipment and keep it dry. Archery is very much an individual sport but we have challenged our membership with various competitions that have included shootouts on paper targets, 3D animals, balloons, and even some moving targets!

At our events we always fire up the BBQ, have refreshments and have prizes for participants. Look for Archery announcements on the Village welcoming boards and the weekly e-Blasts! We are looking for new members at just $25 and applications are available at the office and online. We look forward to seeing you shooting some arrows up at the Range! Special Thanks for Service This is something different, but I thought you should know. We experienced several failures of equipment, and/ or services, and in addition we had several very large trees that needed attention beyond our capabilities, this year (2019) which required emergency or unexpected repairs/ attention. The Chalet was temporarily without drinking water due to a broken well pipe. The electrical panel at the Chalet required attention simply because it was a mess. The electrical service at the entrance required major repairs/ replacement. Two large trees at the administration building required trimming 50’ above the ground for safety reasons.

Chalet: The well was contaminated by bacteria. The problem was a broken well pipe. This broken pipe was most likely caused by accident, probably being backed into by someone attending an event. The pipe was broken approximately 12” below the surface and rainwater runoff was able to enter the well which caused the contamination. The DEP was contacted and advised about the contamination. I contacted several contractors and chose Duane Moyer Well Drilling because he agreed to perform the work within 24-48 hours. I want to thank Duane Moyer for his quick response, professionalism and for allowing me to observe and learn something new. Chalet electrical panel, and community entrance: I reached out to several electrical contractors for repairs of existing electrical “nightmares” and after much consideration chose Burger Electric. John Burger spent many hours diagnosing, tracing and cleaning-up the electrical service at the Chalet in the panel box. This panel box was a concern brought up last year during a code inspection and I think we are in much better shape now. Burger Electric was also used to complete the electrical installations at the administration building and front entrance. I want to thank John Burger for allowing me to observe, ask many questions and allowing me to learn something new.

Trees: While removing and preparing to replace the sidewalks at the administration building, every effort was made to save and/or not hurt the large trees around the building. Ike Olson (arborist) donated his time to diagnose and teach me something about tree health. We walked the area and inspected trees that are 150+ years old. Ike donated his time to trim these trees while hanging 50’ in the air. We decided not to replace a large section of sidewalk in an effort to “not hurt” the largest and oldest tree at the corner of the building. I want to thank Ike Olson for teaching me something about trees and donating his time and efforts to help our community. PS: The “mushroom” adds a conversational touch at the entrance, thank you. During the year we use many different contractors/ professionals to help keep our community up and running safely. These are just a few that I have singled out but all deserve our thanks for keeping LLV functioning.
