George W. Childs Recreation Site Re-Opens To The Public BUSHKILL — Superintendent John J. Donahue announced today that George W. Childs Recreation Site within Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area will reopen on Thursday, May 23, after a nearly three year closure. The popular destination has been completely rehabilitated bringing it closer to the original vision that wealthy Philadelphia philanthropist and publisher George W. Childs had for it when he first dedicated it to the public in 1892 as a place for people to enjoy nature. Childs died in 1894 and his widow donated the site to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1912. It was operated as a state park until 1983 when the Commonwealth donated the property to the National Park Service (NPS). "This site has been popular with visitors for well over a hundred years. Today's visitors will enjoy the newly rehabilitated walkways, bridges, picnic sites, and new overlooks as much, if not more, than visitors did when it was first opened to the public," said Donahue.

In light of budget constraints from sequestration, no large ceremony was held.

However, the superintendent was joined on site for a ribbon cutting last week by Delaware Township Supervisor Ted Parcells in recognition of the mutual interest and long standing cooperation between Delaware Township and the NPS. Sorry, but there’s no such thing at the Township Building! Every day, starting at 8:00 a.m., we stand ready to be of service to the residents of Delaware Township. The phones start ringing and we strive to answer all questions – some of which do defy categorization. We take our job of helping the residents very seriously, and there are times that this involves just providing a sympathetic ear. There are many times that we help by finding out the correct place for a resident to call, or even making the call for the residents ourselves. Everything from requesting a permit application, to having someone answer questions about zoning, about septic requirements, about using the Township Building for a private event, to questions about the facilities at Akenac, are handled professionally and as quickly as we can.

In the coming issues, we will attempt to describe all the processes regarding each of our departments here at the building, including all our Commissions and Boards as well as the many groups whose activities are an important part of the Township.

A Quiet Resting Place You have probably passed by the Delaware Cemetery without even knowing it is there. You may have noticed the Old Graveyard on 209 across from the Dutch Reformed Church (The Phoenix). The Delaware Cemetery main entrance is located on Route 739 about 0.1 mile north from the traffic light at 739 and 209.

What a history!

Incorporated in 1880 by a handful of Dingmans Ferry residents, the Delaware Cemetery Association is a small nonprofit cemetery, not affiliated with any specific church or the township. To this day, it is still run by a group of volunteers whose mission is to “own a piece of property and from that real estate provide the selling of burial grave plots; facilitate burials in those deeded plots; and maintain the cemetery in presentable condition.” With records going back to the 1880s, the cemetery not only is the final resting place for many area family members, but also is a place of fascinating history. On a sunny day, you feel like you are standing surrounded by names that built Dingmans Ferry -- from the many “Dingmans” to Chief Thundercloud -- as they rest peacefully looking over the river’s valley.

Like many volunteer organizations, we are looking for people who might wish to give a bit of time helping with our operations and record-keeping. Delaware Township Ambulance Corp. Report The Delaware Township Volunteer Ambulance Corp is dedicated to providing ambulance services for the residents of Delaware Township, Dingmans Ferry, PA. We are committed to providing quality emergency medical care through our skilled and compassionate volunteers to the community and surrounding areas.

Our service-oriented volunteers strive for excellence through training and education. Our organization will continue its tradition of community service through public education and awareness, special event coverage, and assistance to other emergency services when called upon. We are a non-profit organization, established in 1975, that subsists primarily on voluntary contributions to provide such superb service to our community.

We have responded to over 200 calls in the past 5 months and have transported to Newton, Bon Secours, Pocono, Orange Regional and Wayne Hospitals. Luckily, we have been able to meet all of our calls but if we don't get new members this may not be possible.

Crafter And Vendors Wanted Crafters and vendors are wanted for the Delaware Township’s Annual Harvest Festival On September 21, 2013, Delaware Township is holding their annual Harvest Festival in Akenac Park from 10am to 3pm. Rain-date scheduled for the next day.

If you’re looking for a FREE vendor space to sell items, advertise your business or promote your non-profit, the Harvest Festival is the place to be! Each year the festival provides a variety of activities and attractions for people of all ages, including a Chili-Cook Off and Baking Contest.

Spaces are approximately 10x10, are given on a first come first serve basis and fill up quickly. We do recommend 3 sided white tents to protect you from the elements as well as aiding us in defining the vendor spaces. Tents are not mandatory.

Pre-registration is mandatory. No early tear downs accepted.

George W. Childs Recreation Site Re-Opens To The Public Continued from Page 1 Kara Deutsch were also in attendance. Deutsch, who managed the project for Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, along with Hugh Duffy and staff members from the NPS's Denver Service Center, local park staff from several divisions, volunteers, and the contractor, Cutting Edge Group of Lake George, New York, formed the team that brought this project to fruition.

Volunteers with the Millbrook Village Society milled all of the lumber for the project from that trees that were cut down in the park to make way for the expansion of State Route 2001. "We did not want to waste a single tree," said the park superintendent. "PennDot helped us immensely by delivering trees that had to be removed from NPS land for the road project and the volunteers from the Millbrook Village Society provided the sweat equity to make the work beautiful and honor the conservation ethic of the park and its founder George W. Childs," added Donahue. Black Locust trees that were removed from the grounds of Grey Towers National Historic Site were also used in the project.

The site now includes accessible trails and picnic sites that meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards and the bridges, walkways, and overlooks have been restored to a condition much like what visitors would have seen there in the late nineteenth- and early twentieth- centuries. New restroom facilities, parking areas, and picnic sites complete the setting. Wayside exhibits explaining the story of the site will be installed along the trail and at overlooks at a later date.

Superintendent Donahue continued: "This project was very important to me. Childs Park, as it is known locally, represents everything that the NPS stands for including preservation of natural and cultural resources and partnerships with our local neighbors. My first project here was reopening the Dingmans Falls Visitor Center in 2004 after an 8 year closure and now it has come full circle with the rehabilitation and reopening of Childs Park. This site is one of the most popular places to visit in the recreation area and serves visitors who come from great distances to see the three waterfalls and hemlock forests around which the site has been constructed as well as visitors who live just down the street or in neighboring communities. It is one of the crown jewels of Pike County, Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area and the National Park Service and we are extremely pleased to be able to share it with the public once again."

Deputy Superintendent Leonard pointed out that almost everyone in the park contributed in some way to the completion of this project. In April, an employee work day was held during which staff members from all divisions and disciplines pitched in to complete the final touches to the site before opening. "Now we need our visitors to respect and care for this special place so that it can be enjoyed for years to come," he added. George W. Childs Recreation Site is one of several locations in the park to be designated as a "Carry In, Carry Out" site this year. Visitors must take everything they bring in, including trash, with them when they leave. The project cost $2.9 million.

Board of Supervisors Update As you may be aware, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (“DEP”) has proposed new sewage regulations pertaining to On-Lot Sewage in Guidance Policy # 385-2208-001. The Supervisors of Delaware Township strongly oppose the proposed Guidance. The approval of this policy could lead to restrictions on properties and create unnecessary costs for both business owners and property owners alike. It may even render some properties non-buildable.

The Board has addressed the proposed guidance policy at public meetings to assist in educating the residents of Delaware Township and we have been in contact with our State Senator and Representatives to voice our concerns. The Township sent a letter to the DEP dated April 19th outlining our specific opposition to the guidance.

We then met with the Department of Environmental Protection on May 16th where government officials from Wayne, Pike and Monroe counties were all in attendance.

The outcome of the meeting confirmed our concerns and absolutely solidified our resolve to oppose the proposed DEP guidance. We followed up with a second letter to the DEP dated May 30th wherein we once again outlined our concerns and even proposed alternatives to the proposed guidance.

As elected officials we are entrusted with an environment and a community that needs our protection. Our goal is to diligently do our best to protect the property rights of all residents.

As the Supervisors of Delaware Township, we will do everything within our legal power to assure that neither the environment nor our community is abused.

Emergency Management Update

By Gwen McNamara My name is Gwen McNamara and this year I had the privilege of being appointed the Emergency Management Coordinator for Delaware Township.

I am originally from Chicago and have lived in Delaware Township since 2006 with my husband of 21 years and my two amazing daughters. I am always impressed with the diversity, character, history, and strength of our township. It is truly amazing. I am and have been a volunteer for the Wayne/Pike Red Cross Disaster Team since 2007 and carry a variety of certifications from the American Red Cross, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), as well as various other certifications and authorizations.

Since taking over I have begun working on:

• Ensuring that we have all of our policies,

procedures, and resources that best represent our community and our abilities.

• Developing and growing our pool of

volunteers that are ready to step up and support our township in the case of a disaster.

• Developing a connection with community

and business representatives to assist with information sharing and resources during a disaster.

My short term goals are:

• To create training and workshop

opportunities for both of my committees as well as the community.

• Provide additional informational resources to the community for better preparedness.

• Work with our communities on their individual emergency plans.

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO START Ready to begin your emergency planning? The following are important preparations you should start making immediately:

• Make an emergency plan for you and your family in case disaster strikes.

• Get an emergency kit. Your emergency kit

should be individually tailored to meet the basic survival needs of your family for three days to a week.

My overall goal is that in an emergency, we will work to minimize the loss of property and life and to help return to normal as quickly and efficiently as possible. No disaster will ever go perfectly- there will always be items to be improved upon, but we will all get through it if we all work together.

Rent The Building Have You Ever Been To The Delaware Township Library?

The Delaware Township Library was started in 1981 by a group of dedicated residents, to provide a local library for residents of the township. Back then, the library was located in the meeting room of the Delaware Township Municipal Building. Shelves were constructed and housed a collection of donated and purchased books. In 1983, the library moved to the building adjacent to the Township building because it had outgrown the space in the meeting room. In 2007, the library moved to its current location at 106 Connors Way at Akanec Park, Route 739.

Currently, the library houses a collection of adult fiction including many bestsellers and large print books, non-fiction and biographies, children’s fiction and non-fiction, in addition to videos and DVD’s and books-on-tape. There are more than 6,500 volumes, both print and non-print, available. Our collection is acquired through purchases and donations from residents. There is also a computer workstation with internet access. In the summer, we have a wonderful screened porch, with a view of the lake, where you can relax and read. We host local authors for book-signings, story hours and movies for children, and participate in the annual Harvest Fest each fall.

The Delaware Township Library Association is an incorporated non-profit organization of volunteers, dedicated to maintaining and operating the library. LEGISLATURE House Aims To Tackle Key Legislative Goals In Pennsylvania In 2013-14

Brown, State Representative 189th District (Monroe/Pike Counties) I am pleased to be included for the first time in your community newsletter and I look forward to helping you stay informed. As your state representative I encourage you to contact me if you have any questions, suggestions or concerns regarding our district or state government.

The Pennsylvania House achieved many important legislative goals last session; however, the state still faces many challenges and some of the most pressing financial issues remain unresolved. Recently I was appointed as a Deputy Policy Chairman for the Majority House Policy Committee for the 2013-2014 legislative session. Although there are many issues, I remain committed to one of the most important issues facing residents of Monroe and Pike counties – skyrocketing school property taxes, the public school funding formula and school district responsibility. The current school distribution funding formula, which is the amount of money our local schools receive from the state, is unfair to many schools, children and taxpayers.

Changing this formula is not an easy task as many districts benefit from the current funding formula and legislators of those districts do not support this measure. However, I will continue to fight for increased school district funding and responsible use of these funds. I am also cosponsor of House Bill 76 aimed at eliminating the majority of school property taxes by switching the way we fund schools. Rather than using our current system of real estate values to determine school taxes, this proposal increases and expands sales tax and personal income tax to fund schools. A tax switch that would alleviate the financial stress of school taxes. Both of these measures are extremely difficult at the state level; however, they will remain my focus along with several other measures to help make our school taxes more fair and affordable.

I will also continue pushing for legislation that improves Pennsylvania’s business climate by reforming the regulatory and permitting process for businesses. Last summer, I brought the House Majority Policy Committee and several

of our state legislators to Shawnee to hear from our local business owners. One of the major concerns expressed at the meeting was the complicated, expensive and lengthy periods of time it takes to obtain permits to build, expand or start up a business. This reiterates the old phrase that time is money and we could possibly be hindering business development. Because it is our duty to make Pennsylvania a desirable location to start a business and create jobs, it is unacceptable to have these burdens.

Since state revenues are not growing as much as we would like, the state faces another tough budget in 2013. Some of the issues include regulatory reform, pension reform, transportation funding and liquor privatization.

Due to the underfunded pension obligation, the House Majority Leadership team recently formed a Pension Reform Task Force to help gather information and put forth suggested solutions concerning pension reform. This group’s goal is to develop responsible and workable pension solutions and report back to all members of the House with its findings. Any proposed solution must protect individuals who have earned their pensions – a requirement spelled out in our state’s Constitution – but also make meaningful reforms to the system so that it is sustainable and protects the state going forward.

of living within our means and balances state spending with state revenue. By virtue of the last two budgets, the days of overspending and over borrowing are gone, and this new proposal reflects that Pennsylvania is not willing to return to our recent past.

Prioritizing money for education has been a top priority, and the recent budget proposal invests millions in additional funds to basic education across Pennsylvania. This proposal also fights against higher education tuition hikes by flat funding public colleges and universities in exchange for a promise to keep tuition increases low. I was also pleased that the proposal invests more funding into our human services programs so that we are able to provide the services to some of our most vulnerable citizens.

Brown Appointed To Serve As Deputy Policy Chairman For 2013-14 Legislative Session HARRISBURG — Charged with closely reviewing policy issues impacting the Commonwealth, Rep. Rosemary M. Brown (R­Monroe/Pike) today announced she was recently appointed to serve as deputy policy chairman during the 2013-141egislative session.

"I am honored and pleased to have been appointed to this position to examine policy issues, including job creation and improving the business climate in our local communities and all of Pennsylvania," said Brown. "Many of the welfare reform and job creation initiatives that have been implemented over the past few years have originated in the House Majority Policy Committee."

Through a variety of hearings, roundtable discussions and policy tours, the House Majority Policy Committee exists to provide a broad array of research and foundational information regarding legislative policy. The committee works in conjunction with the state House standing committees on several subject matters, including job creation, liquor privatization and Marcellus Works.

This committee is chaired by Rep. Dave Reed (R-Indiana), and the deputy policy chairs are representatives, like Brown, from a wide variety of professions and locations throughout the Commonwealth. They are chosen by House leadership to serve with the chairman and lead on key legislative issues and responsible policy development. DIG DELAWARE The Smith-Harker Community Garden The Community Garden located on Wilson Hill Road, across from the Delaware Township Building, encompasses both ornamental flower beds and smaller, organic vegetable plots. The flower beds are for the publics' enjoyment and education while the vegetable plots are assigned to and tended by township residents.

The park-like areas consist of three major gardens - a long perennial border, an herb garden, and a butterfly garden. These areas are maintained by the vegetable gardeners who contract to volunteer at least 8 hours each growing season to weed and oversee the plantings. Some gardeners also volunteer their time by weed-wacking and mowing paths when necessary.

Most vegetable plots are 10 feet square and are planted, cared for and harvested by the resident gardener. They are free to plant what they choose while keeping their plots and surrounding areas organic and tidy.

Growing Vegetables

By Carol Padalino A few generations ago, the kitchen garden was a necessity. Today, people are gardening more as a hobby and a source of fun and exercise that carries the bonus of fresh, organically grown vegetables. The kitchen garden has made a comeback, even with the Obamas at the White House.

All you need to start your garden is a bit of information about plot size and soil, guarding your garden from wildlife and which crops to grow.

Beginners can start small with a plot 12’ square because you can follow early crops with late ones.

You can expect pounds of tomatoes from one well-grown plant. Crops such as Swiss chard and pole beans are especially economical because they bear over a long time. When carrots and scallions are eaten, you can plant kale in their place.

Your best garden investment is a healthy, fertile soil that’s the consistency of crumbly, chocolate cake. Soil should be alive with worms, plant nourishing bacteria and other tiny microbes that help plants grow. You create soil like that by adding plenty of organic matter in the form of composted dried leaves, grass clippings and vegetable scraps from your kitchen. Get a soil test kit from the state cooperative extension office, follow the directions, mail it away and you will receive a detailed analysis of your soil’s needs and recommended amendments. You can hand dig your plot, composting any sod that is removed, or use a hand tiller. Keep your bed soft and fluffy by not walking on them. If you keep your beds weeded and mulched, in the future you can fork in compost without tilling again.

Then plant what you love to eat. Most vegetables are annuals, planted new each year. But you might like to tuck in some rhubarb, asparagus or horse radish - perennial plants that will return year after year. Place these in an out-of-the way space so they are not disturbed. Also consider easy to grow herbs like parsley, dill, basil, oregano, thyme, lemon balm and mint.

Gardeners are friendly people, willing to share their knowledge about what works for them. Stop by the Community Garden on Wilson Hill Road to see how some residents of Delaware Township are putting their plots to good use.

By Rebecca Gray Kochovos Each year Delaware Township and the Community Events Board holds a Harvest Festival in Dingmans Ferry at Akenac Park.

As a part of the event, a Baking Contest and Chili Cook-Off Contest are held. Monetary prizes and Certificates are awarded by the sponsor of the event, Dingman Delaware Insurance Agency, LLC. We are looking for creations to be entered into our Baking Contest. Anyone can enter!

Prizes sponsored by the Dingman Delaware Insurance Agency are awarded for the Best Overall Cookie, Pie or Cake. Tasting is done by the Delaware Township’s Volunteer Ambulance Corp.

On the day of the event, all items to be entered in the Baking Contest must be brought to the Recreation Building in the park no later than 11:00am. Judging will be held at approximately 2:30pm. You do not need to be present to win but we must have your name, address, phone number and name of your creation prior to the event.

The Chili Cook Off contest is a great way to market your store or restaurants chili or show off your family secret! Just ask last year’s winner of Judges Choice, Sarina Middaugh from Sisters Deli. The Chili Cook Off is held inside the Recreation Building with electricity provided if needed. Tasting is open to the public starting at 10:00am.

AKENAC PARK IS OPEN Akenac Park is officially open for the 2013 season: Memorial Day – Labor Day. The Park is a family recreation facility. The 13-acre Lake Marian offers catch and release fishing and a guarded swimming beach. Boats are available for rent at a posted hourly rate. Recreation facilities open this season include a basketball court, 2-sand volleyball courts, horseshoe pits, hiking trails and playground.

Picnic tables and charcoal grills are available throughout the park. Please obey all posted rules and regulations at the park and most importantly enjoy your visit.

Pike County taxpayers are free with proof of tax bill. You must fill out an application and obtain a decal which is available at Akenac Park located on Route 739, Dingmans Ferry, PA. Hours of operation are 7 am until 7 pm, 6 days a week.

Swimming is available from noon until 6:30 pm. The Park will be closed to the public on Tuesdays for maintenance. The following rates apply to non-residents: Daily Pass: Non Resident - Adult-$6.00, Children (under 16)-$2.00, Children (under 3)-Free Seniors (65 over)- free. Seasonal Pass: Non Resident, Individual-$45.00, Family (3-5)-$105.00, Individual Senior (65 over)-free, Family Seniors (3-5)-free. CHILDREN UNDER 16 MUST BE SUPERVISED. NO BUSSES PERMITTED With summer rapidly approaching, we thought it might be fun to shine the spotlight on an employee whose work is evidenced by many Township residents.

Our Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds, Luis Barrios, is responsible for all the scheduling both here at the Building, but also at Akenac Park. He coordinates the scheduling of lifeguards and also supervises the summer employees who are hired to keep all Township property in pristine condition. Luis is also the one who volunteered to take on “Movie Night” at the Park, which has become a popular Delaware Township tradition! Luis has been employed at the Township for more than seven years. In that time, he has seen his responsibilities grow. He handles whatever is thrown at him, with good humor. For that alone, we are appreciative! So, if you see Luis at the Park or around the building, feel free to give him a “high five” for all his efforts!

The contest is judged by the people and vendors attending the Harvest Festival and also by the Community Events Board members. Monetary prizes and certificates provided by Dingman Delaware Insurance Agency, LLC are awarded to the winners that are categorized of People’s Choice, Judges Choice and Hottest.

Tasting cups and spoons are also provided by the sponsor. Ten quarts of chili is required in order to provide enough for sampling throughout the hours of the event. Votes are counted approximately 30 minutes before the end of the event. All contestants must be set up in the Recreation Building by 10:00 am.

Delaware Township’s Annual Harvest Festival

By Rebecca Gray Kochovos On September 21, 2013, Delaware Township will hold its annual Harvest Festival, Chili Cook-Off and Baking Contest at Akenac Park in Dingmans Ferry. Each year local crafters, artists, nonprofits, businesses and vendors come together to provide us with a fun filled day.

Upon entering the park, you’ll see the beautifully decorated “Kissing Bridge” where bubbles are handed out from a visiting Fairy or two. Delaware Township Historical Society demonstrates apple cider making using their apple press. Dingmans Choice Bridge proudly displays an old pulley used on one of the original ferries. The day wouldn’t be complete without free hay rides provided by K&S Landscaping of Dingmans Ferry and the Dingmans Ferry Lutheran Church.

The ride travels throughout the park with a stop off for a free pumpkin. There will also be free face painting and a free magic show with free balloon art. Annie Craig will be returning this year to entertain us with her wonderful music and singing. Hungry? If the free treats from various vendors don’t fill you, stop by the Dingmans Ferry Lions Club to purchase some of their delicious burgers, dogs and fries. Don’t forget your vote is needed in the Chili Cook-Off to judge the Hottest or People’s Choice Chili.

Recreation Director Brings Summer Programming To Akenac Park The Delaware Township Board of Supervisors is proud to announce the hiring of Colleen DellaBella as Part-Time Recreation Director of Akenac Park. Colleen is a Township resident who teaches in New Jersey and is a member of the Township Community Events Board (formerly known as the Recreation Board). We believe her professional experience will be a great asset to the Township Park in creating and supervising programs for children and adults. Mrs. DellaBella will also serve as our community and township liaison working to coordinate and schedule organizations using the park.

Are you crafty? We could use your help at the craft table during the Egg Hunt / Breakfast with the Easter Bunny or Tree Lighting Ceremony. The craft varies each year but children typically need help opening their package or gluing an object. 15 minutes, hour, hour or two, we need you!

Are you outdoorsy? Why not volunteer to ride the hay truck during the annual Harvest Festival? We’d need you to help passengers on and off the truck. I’m sure you’ll tire of countless hay rides so have no fear, more help is here! We have someone to relieve you!

A Walk With Marie Zimmermann

As a long-time (decades) visitor to Dingmans Ferry, spending vacations and summers with my grandparents, I finally made the big move to permanent residency. After a few weeks setting up household, I asked a cousin “where can I go for a good walk where I’ve never been before?” His answer, the Zimmermann Farm. Like many other newish arrivals to Delaware Township, I was completely unaware of this piece of heaven on earth. I am so glad I found it.

I became involved with the Friends of Marie Zimmermann in 2010, a non-profit organization set up to restore Marie Zimmermann’s house and spread the word about Marie Zimmermann’s life - her renowned artistic talents, the family history and the contribution the farm itself has made to the prosperity and wellbeing of the local population over the years.

Friends of Marie Zimmermann, in partnership with the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, proudly announces the celebration of Marie Zimmermann’s 100th birthday on June 22, 2013, on the property located at Zimmermann Farm Rd. and Route 209, within the National Park Service.

The Zimmermann family purchased the 1200 acre property from Daniel E. Van Etten in 1882. The house that we see today was built in 1912, a 6300 sq. ft. Dutch Colonial Revival - and certainly includes Marie’s input on all design features, inside and out. This home was included on the National List of Historic Places in 1979.

The word – determination – would be put to very good use describing Marie’s character. She was determined to follow her passions and goals in the metalworking field. She was a master of a dozen crafts. Her works in many mediums – decorative iron, metals and alloy metals, rare gems, ivories, coral, pearls, etc.) were exhibited in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, private exhibitions in Charleston, SC and Santa Barbara, CA, as well as private commissions. Her father wanted her to be a doctor but she won that discussion and forged ahead into a life of creativity and acclimation.

The 1920s and 1930s were her most productive years but in the late 1930s, her life took a tragic turn when she lost her entire family – parents and three siblings – within a five-year period. Approaching her 60th birthday and being pressured by the government to keep better records of the precious metals and gems she used, Marie retired from the art world…….her retort to Washington being, “I’m not a bookkeeper.” Again, determined to do what is right for her.

In the 1940s, she turned to the comfort and inspiration of the farm. The employees and staff said they could talk to her as if she were family and that loyalty was reciprocated. She applied her creative sense to every aspect of running the farm. She hunted, fished, and gave special attention to her two gardens. The house is called the “Marie Zimmermann House,” not only because she was a renowned artist who lived here off and on most of her life, but just as importantly, her design “eye” was sparked by the natural world around her here in Dingmans Ferry.

In 1997, Friends of Marie Zimmermann envisioned what you see today and partnered with NPS to secure a federal grant which the Park managed, repairing the roof, removing the asbestos, re-milling the doors and windows, and installing a geo-thermal heating and cooling system. Since 2010, the Marie and John Zimmermann Fund has granted Friends $240,000 to complete the inside restoration. And, we are happy to report that not only is the house restored at this point but the garage as well. Friends of Marie Zimmermann will also have tours every Saturday and Sunday, beginning June 29th through September 1st. Hours and directions as stated above and we hope to see you throughout the summer.

Volunteer opportunities are available for tour guides and we can be very flexible with the hours you have available.
