Who Was Dingmans Ferry’s Most Famous Resident? Admittedly, we’ve had some pretty famous folks call our little town home, but it may surprise you that one of the most popular and most interesting was a Blackfoot Indian from Northern Canada named Thunder Cloud Plante. Seeking adventure as a young brave, Thundercloud took a position as a US army scout during the Indian Wars, claiming he took this on so he could eat regularly! Thunder Cloud later traveled with the famous Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show which gave Europeans their first real look at Cowboys and Indians. Other performers of note included Annie Oakley and Chief Sitting Bull! In the late 1800’s, Thunder Cloud made his way to Dingmans Ferry where he modeled for renowned artist, Henrietta Hashagen and it was through her work that Thunder Cloud’s image soon became the standard for the enduring “Red Man”, quickly becoming the foremost Indian model in the U.S. Other famous artists such as Frederick Remington called upon Thunder Cloud when drawing scenes of frontier life. His likeness adorns the last five dollar gold half eagle minted in the U.S. and if grandpa left you a sack of these coins you might be sitting pretty today! Thunder Cloud and Henrietta eventually married and built a home on Mill Street where they continued to work while raising a daughter, Wanita. He lived here happily until his death in 1916. Thunder Cloud is buried in the Dingman Cemetery on the corner of 209 & 739. Even today his grave is often found to have gifts and flowers placed upon it by history buffs and even Native Americans. The Historical Society museum, located next to the library at Akenac Park on 739, has many photos of Thunder Cloud’s family life here in Dingmans Ferry. You’ll also find a large assortment of arrowheads, Indian artifacts and many other interesting displays and souvenirs. Currently, due to renovations, they are open to the public by appointment only. (570 369 7647) And mark your calendars for our Ice Cream Social with magician Mark Mysterio – Thursday, July 19th at 7PM at the Delaware Twp Bldg, 116 Wilson Hill Road. All our programs and museum tours are free and open to the public.
