An Inside Look at Orange County’s Growing Film Industry B y E t h a n W ebe r “Everyone’s heard of this eccentric guy that’s built a genuine soundstage in the middle of nowhere,” said Jean Lara, Administrative Assistant at Umbra of Newburgh, of Ted Doering who opened Umbra’s soundstages in 2011. Until recently, Orange County, NY has had little interest in developing a film industry, merely welcoming filmmakers as they came along. That is changing, however. “They’re just now starting to statistically gather what a movie brings into an area,” Lara continued. “This will be for the next generation,” Doering said of Umbra and the groundwork it has laid for future filming in the county.

The facility in which Umbra’s soundstages are located was originally built by Doering to house an extensive collection of motorcycles, but was later modified to accommodate a passion for film. Since then, a variety of projects including commercials and an independent film, “The Brass Teapot” by Ramaa Mosley, have made use of the soundstages. Umbra’s presence reflects a new, ongoing effort to bring filmmakers to Orange County— an effort in which the Orange County Arts Council has taken a leading role. Since its establishment in 2007, the Orange County Arts Council has striven to support all arts in
