OCCC Celebrates June is Women in Business Month at the Orange County Chamber of Commerce, with most of this month’s Chamber events focused on promoting, as well as educating, women in business. Preparation for these seminars, webinars, workshops and panels, breakfasts and mixers lead to an investigation of the changing role of women in the workforce over the last few decades. According to a 2011 report ordered by the White House Council on Women and Girls, the percentage of women that are working or looking for work rose from 33% to 61% between 1950 and 1999. In recent years, that percentage has stayed about the same. Furthermore, the report showed that while women are still less active in the labor force than men, in 2009, 51% of positions in professional, management and related occupations were held by women. However, the majority of female employees tend to work in traditionally female fields. With these numbers in mind, we asked a few Orange County businesswomen about their experiences, the changes that are taking place, and the work that remains to be done. Continued on page 11
