When we talk to people and ask this question, common answers we hear are: • I hope so • I am not sure • I am confident Those are the optimistic answers. Often people flat out say they don’t think they will be able to retire. So why is a person who is doing all the right thing by contributing to their 401K, IRAs, saving and investing not feeling confident about their retirement strategy?
if you retire and the stock market goes up each of your first 5 years in retirement you’re in good shape. But what if the stock market loses money each of the first 5 years? Or what if you retired in 2008 when the stock market crashed? Who will live longer? You or your money? How will medical costs impact your retirement?
Cheryl Cohen Director of Membership Investment cherylc@orangeny.com
What is it that my retirement money MUST do for me? For most it would be to have income for life!
Investors have typically been taught that first is the accumulation phase followed by the distribution phase. Over longer periods of time your money has the potential to grow to be able to make steady distributions to pay your bills during your retirement years. However, a review of the things that could go wrong should be an important conversation to have with your advisor. Let’s look at three prominent risks:
We believe you may need to have a different conversation. You need answers to:
Sequence of returns simply means how do yearly earnings evolve. As an example,
Lynn Allen Cione, President lynnc@orangeny.com
So, ask yourself?
The answer may lie in reassessing what is your ultimate goal.
1. Sequence of Returns 2. Longevity 3. Medical costs

ORANGE PULSE Safe Harbors of the Hudson Established in 2000, Safe Harbors is a non-profit housing and arts re-development project in the City of Newburgh, New York. In 2001, Safe Harbors purchased the blighted Hotel Newburgh and in 2004, with a $21 million investment of state, county and federal funds, transformed it into an award-winning mixed use project. Safe Harbors includes the Cornerstone Residence - supportive housing for 128 of our most vulnerable neighbors including the formerly homeless, those living with mental health diagnoses and physical disabilities, veterans, low income working adults and artists in need of affordable live/ work space; the Ann Street Gallery - a contemporary arts venue; the Lobby at the Ritz – a performing arts space; the Historic Ritz Theater; resident artist studio space; two commercial spaces; and the Safe Harbors Green – a half-acre urban park.

Opened in 2007, the Lobby at the Ritz and Ann Street Gallery are critical components of the Safe Harbors project and serve the important role of contributing to the mission by connecting high quality performing and visual arts programming with a diverse, under-served community. The Lobby at the Ritz, a vibrant, year round performing arts venue, brings local, regional and national performing artists to downtown Newburgh and makes events accessible and affordable and/or free to our community members. The space is also utilized for community productions, educational programming and a variety of cultural events. The Ann Street Gallery, a committed leader in the visual arts, provides exhibitions that support artists, while enriching lives and building community through free educational programming and engagement activities. Public access to the Ann Street Gallery is year round with exhibition programming consisting of five annual shows that run approximately 6 - 8 weeks. The Gallery’s objectives are to provide the public and community with free and accessible exhibitions, lectures, programs, workshops and events.

A once vacant lot adjacent to the project, Safe Harbors Green is now a half-acre, fully ADA accessible, sustainably designed park located in the center of a distressed, urban community. Expanding the Safe Harbors’ project to include this vacant land has provided an epicenter for community gathering and created a venue for markets, open air exhibitions, festivals and engagement. In late 2016, Safe Harbors received notice that it was awarded a $500,000 Homes and Community Renewal New York Main Street Stabilization Grant for the replacement of the historic Ritz Theater roof structure. The roof project will stabilize the building and lay the groundwork for the full restoration of the theater - taking its place in the City of Newburgh as a center for community creativity, engagement, education and performance.

In 2017, Safe Harbors embarked on a partnership with affordable housing developers, RUPCO, on the rehabilitation of 15 vacant, abandoned properties, all built between 1880 and 1910, in Newburgh’s East End Historic District. With its management of the project, Safe Harbors will broaden the population it serves with the addition of 47 one, two and threebedroom housing units for those coming from homelessness, low-income individuals, those with disabilities or special needs and others in need of affordable housing. Safe Harbors has built our unique model of urban redevelopment, each year strategically growing our project with the objective of alleviating homelessness and housing disparity, stabilizing our resident population and providing opportunities for education, workforce training and independence. Safe Harbors has created a vibrant downtown, catalyzing economic development and established a hub for arts and community engagement. Support Safe Harbors of the Hudson - Make a donation today! BUSINESS INSIDER Piercing The Veil Of Dark Social W H AT I S D A R K S O C I A L?
The term “dark social” is any sharing done peer to peer on the internet that websites cannot track. Dark Social is any form of online communication that is private or hidden from being tracked by Facebook Insights, Google Analytic, etc. Dark Social is not on public social networks such as Twitter or Facebook. Dark Social accounts for more than 70% of all online (Radium One) activity. Simply said, dark social is data that does not identify its source or users. The occurrence of dark social in the U.S. is less prevalent than it is globally. Americans are consumer crazy and are not as concerned about their privacy. Currently only 40% of all social referrals are tracked back to their sources. Europeans value their privacy to a greater, degree than Americans, in fact 75% of social referrals are dark in Europe. This makes it harder to
determine where recommendations are coming from in Europe. The nature of it being ‘dark’ makes it much harder for marketers to assess or measure visitors and where the traffic is coming from. Given that most of the traffic is dark, sentiment analysis is well suspect (the data is not reliable to summarize if sentiment is positive or negative). People are much more likely to share on dark social channels compared to a shout-out on Twitter or Facebook where the crowd will mash, distort and disrupt the message. Dark Social channels are private and intimate conversations with like minded people. • Chatrooms: Text messaging apps like Whatsapp protects its user’s privacy and will not pass the info about links to the resulting website. Facebook Messenger will not report referral information as Facebook holds this for their own ad algorithms.
• eMails: Most email-providers like Gmail, Yahoo, and Outlook don’t pass a referrer when a user clicks the link to protect privacy and security for that user. • Https: Secure searching actually does what it advertises, and does not pass your information to the website. HTTPS cannot cover your IP address, so you are still an unique visitor to the website. Dark Social users are more than happy to buy on Dark Social. In fact, among younger users, there is something of an
expectation that they should be able to purchase (Frictionless.Social, 2016). Dark Social is where your customers live, they are ready to buy and covet the privacy of not being tracked. To learn more about dark social media or to discuss how HVPR can help your business contact us at 845.202.7087, visit our website or email us at hello@ hudsonvalleypublicrelations.com.

YWCA Orange County and SAFE HOMES Exploring Affiliation The Board of Directors and executive leadership of YWCA Orange County and SAFE HOMES of Orange County, the area’s leading non-profits serving women and girls, have entered into formal discussions aimed at developing a closer affiliation between the two organizations. “Our two boards have appointed a joint task force to examine the potential of and options for our organizations to join forces,” said Kellyann Kostyal-Larrier, executive director of SAFE HOMES. “No decision has been made as there is much work to do yet, but we are very excited about the possibilities,” she noted. “In these very challenging times for women and girls, it is even more critical to explore every option for strengthening services aimed at combating the resulting inequities of continued racism and sexism in our communities,” said Christine Sadowski, executive director of YWCA Orange County. “YWCA and SAFE HOMES have a long history of collaboration over the years and we have the opportunity now, through formal affiliation, to make an even greater impact in the lives of the women, girls, and families our respective agencies serve,” she observed. YWCA Orange County, founded in Newburgh in 1888, is a feminist, anti-racist social justice organization, committed to eliminating racism and empowering women through community programming, education, and legislative advocacy. YWCA’s national mission of eliminating racism and empowering women is fulfilled locally through programs addressing women’s economic
empowerment, racial justice (including immigration reform), women’s health, violence against women, childcare, and community collaboration. The agency serves more than 5,000 people annually through programs extending throughout Orange County. YWCA is committed to focusing all its resources toward breaking down the structural elements of racism and sexism that lead to unequal distribution of power and access in our communities. SAFE HOMES of Orange County is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) that has grown from a grassroots small group of committed individuals in 1986 to an organization, leader, and resource in the field of intimate partner violence, teen dating violence, and human trafficking. SAFE HOMES works from a feminist philosophy of empowerment and a commitment to social change through active participation in working toward ending racism, classism, sexism, ageism, homophobia, ableism, and all forms of oppression. SAFE HOMES of Orange County’s mission is to work toward the elimination of intimate partner violence, teen dating violence, and trafficking by providing comprehensive support services to victims and their children, and by increasing public awareness about these issues and encouraging accountability for perpetrators. This effort is supported by a Strategic Restructuring Initiative grant from the Dyson Foundation and the professional facilitation, legal, and support services of the New York Council of Nonprofits.

AWARDS
& RECOGNITION
Barton & Loguidice - June 13, 2017 – Zweig Group, the preeminent resource for the design industry, has recognized Barton & Loguidice as one of the top 100 fastest-growing firms in the architecture, engineering and environmental consulting industry in the United States according to their recently released 2017 Hot Firm List. The ranking is based on both dollar and percentage revenue growth over the previous three-year period. Barton & Loguidice will be honored at the Zweig Hot Firm and A/E Industry Awards Conference in Seattle, Washington, September 21-22, 2017. Barton & Loguidice President and CEO, John F. Brusa, Jr., says, “The firm’s steady growth is attributed to several factors including the successful launch of new service areas such as Asset Management, the growth of our geographic footprint with the opening of offices in new markets such as Maryland, and the acquisition of firms such as David Clouser & Associates in New Paltz, NY.” Brusa added, “The staff’s dedication to thrive during this period of growth is a testament to the quality of people that stand behind our brand, providing clients with the innovative solutions they need.” “Getting on the Hot Firm List is like winning an Oscar. It says you are the best at what you do – running an A/E/P or environmental consulting firm – in an industry made up of 100,000 companies,” said Mark Zweig, chairman and founder of Zweig Group. This ranking, established over twenty years ago, is the only list celebrating and honoring growth in the industry. Catholic Charities – Catholic Charities Community Services in Dutchess, Orange, Sullivan, and Ulster Counties joined with iHeartMedia for the kick-off of the Summer 2017 Stuff the Bus Food Drive. Catholic Charities’ staff went live on-air with iHeartMedia morning personalities Joe Daily and Michelle Taylor of Q92, WRWD’s Party Marty Mitchell, and Tom Sipos of WKIP to discuss Stuff the Bus and what it means for the individuals and families served by Catholic Charities and the many food pantries and soup kitchens with which they partner. Now in its 20th year, Stuff the Bus is hosted by iHeartMedia at five Stop & Shop locations in the mid-Hudson region in November and June. This is the third year Catholic Charities has been named the beneficiary of this bi-annual food drive which encourages donations of non-perishable food items at a time when food stocks are low and the need is critical. “Summer is not a time when we typically think of food drives, but, it’s a time when the need skyrockets for food pantries,” said Chuck Benfer, iHeartMedia Market President. “That’s because children who typically receive free or reduced breakfast or lunch during the school year are now home for summer break and families have additional mouths to feed. For some, that’s a real struggle. Unfortunately, it’s also a time when food pantry supplies are often at their lowest. Our Summer Stuff the Bus food drive helps restock pantry shelves to meet the heightened summer demand,” Benfer added. This summer’s Stuff the Bus will be hosted the weekend of June 24 and 25 at Stop & Shop locations in Newburgh, Hyde Park, Hopewell Junction, and Poughkeepsie. The donations will be collected at stores by iHeartMedia radio personalities and volunteers throughout the weekend and loaded into school buses provided courtesy of Gallagher Bus Service Corporation/Leprechaun Lines in New Windsor, which also donates the bus drivers’ time and services for the two day food drive. Additional event supporters include Claudio Cares Foundation, Foam & Wash Car Wash, People’s United Bank, the James Brown Family Foundation, and Viking Industries.

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Orange County - The Relatives as Parents Program (RAPP) support group coordinated by Cornell Cooperative Extension Orange County was honored on May 12 with “The Family Is the Most Important Thing Award”. The award was presented by the Adoptive and Foster Family Coalition of New York at the Coalition’s 28th Annual New York State Foster Care and Adoption Conference in Albany, New York. The award was made possible with funding provided by the Redlich Horwitz Foundation in order to recognize New York foster, adoptive and kinship parent support groups whose stories of exceptional dedication, commitment and passion align with the Coalition’s mission. The award includes a $1,000 scholarship which will be used to further expand the programming for grandparents and relatives who are the primary caregivers and their families in Orange County. Though the exact use of funds has yet to be determined, the $1000 award will be used to enhance the support already offered to relative caregivers. With monthly support groups in Middletown, Port Jervis, New Windsor and Newburgh, RAPP seeks to reach as many of the approximately 2,376 kinship caregivers in Orange County as possible. Finkelstein & Partners – Firm argued successfully that schools must have policies in place to protect students. Attorneys Brian Acard and Christopher Camastro with the personal injury law firm of Finkelstein & Partners, LLP recently tried a case in Dutchess County against the Spackenkill School District for lack of proper supervision of the varsity girls’ softball team. Over the course of the trial the two proved that the school district hired a coach who was not qualified. The school district did not provide or require any training of the individuals it hired to coach its teams. Further, the school district had no policies in place regarding the coach to student ratio when a coach moves a practice indoors, and therefore had no rules in place for setting up safe practice drills. Attorneys Acard and Camastro argued the measure of the verdict must consider the importance of sending a message to the school district to have policies that protect our kids, and that they hire qualified coaches. The jury agreed and found 100% against the school district for a verdict of $1,150,000. Goldstein Lieberman & Co. – Provides a Helping hand to Catholic Charities - Phillip E. Goldstein, Managing Partner of Goldstein Lieberman & Company LLC, Benjamin Mills, Partner, and Lisa Marshall, Controller, recently visited Catholic Charities Community Services of Orange and Sullivan’s Goshen offices to make a generous donation as part of the firm’s Cares Program. The trio presented a check for $1,000 to Dr. Dean Scher, Executive Director of Catholic Charities of Orange and Sullivan. The funds will be used to support the non-profit agency’s anti-poverty programs which include emergency food and shelter assistance, for residents in need in Orange and Sullivan Counties. “From addiction services to emergency food and shelter assistance, Catholic Charities lends a helping hand to some of the neediest and most vulnerable in our community,” remarked Mr. Goldstein. “We are delighted to be able to support their efforts with a donation through the Goldstein Lieberman Cares initiative. Working together with human service agencies like Catholic Charities we’re able to help improve the quality of life for our friends and neighbors in need,” added Goldstein. The Goldstein Lieberman Cares program was created to support various non-profits in New York and New Jersey by providing monetary contributions to organizations throughout each year. The program was recognized in 2011 with the Rockland Business Association’s Pinnacle Award for Corporate Service. Since its inception in 2009, the firm has awarded more than $500,000 to a broad variety of causes throughout New York and New Jersey. St. Anthony Community Hospital in Warwick is a Member of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network. The Hospital Cup is presented annually by the AHA to the hospital that raises the most funds to fight heart disease and stroke through participation in the Tri County Heart Walk. WEB VIDEO A M.A.P. To Successful Video Content BY ERIC CARLSEN
It’s no secret that video is absolutely booming on the web. As of this writing, YouTube is the 2nd largest search engine on the web, with one billion unique monthly visitors. By the year 2020 Cisco predicts that 82% of internet traffic will be video related. People don’t just passively watch good content…they actively pass it on. In fact, according to Invodo over 90% of video viewers share videos with others.
M E S SAG E
How can your organization use this medium to its distinct advantage? Here are three factors to consider: Message, Authenticity, and Production Value.
So think about two or three main points you want your viewer to come away with. Additional information should directly support those two or three points. If you have more than two or three, consider:
When it comes to your product, service, or cause, there are dozens of things you feel everyone should know... right now. However, for your message to be memorable, the main points need to clearly stand out. Imagine if this article contained ‘The Top 20 Tips for Creating Great Video Content.’ That might be helpful. But by the end, you’d be hard pressed to recall even half of them!
• Combining these with an existing point • Featuring it in a later video segment • Eliminating it altogether For your message to stick, less truly is more. AUTH E NTICIT Y
Clients who know (and like) you, are likely to return in the future. But what about the countless potential clients you haven’t met yet? This is one area where video really excels. Allowing people to see you in action, hear your voice, and sense the passion for what you do forms a connection with that viewer before they ever meet you. This is a good thing, IF your message is authentic.

Eric Carlsen is the owner of Scene Lab Productions, a video production firm serving the Hudson Valley region.
Take a moment to reflect on how a recent ad made you feel. Maybe you cringed, felt puzzled, or just tuned out. OR…maybe something resonated, perhaps even had an emotional impact. Your video content can do the same. Help potential clients understand who you are, what motivates you, why they should trust you with their money, time, and resources. Do this, and you’ll quickly win them over. P R O D U C T I O N VA L U E
It’s always surprising how many people believe that pointing a camera at something will make it worth watching. The reality is, interesting videos come from carefully crafted narratives, that are well executed by a team of professionals. This is true whether the narrative is guided by dialogue, voice-over, music, or a series of video clips. While video has been shown to increase sales conversion rates, poorly made videos may have the reverse effect. You’ve likely worked hard to make your organization what it is today. Let the quality of your video content reflect your company well. Bring in your production team early on in the planning phase with scripting, storyboarding, and animatics. Yes, planning your production will elevate it visually. But more importantly, it will heighten the value of your product, service, and overall brand. If creating powerful video content is like a journey, then these three principles are core elements to successfully reaching your destination. Cut corners or skip steps and the results will be less than desirable. But by taking your time to deliver an effective, authentic message with proper production value, the finished product will be exactly what you imagined. With the right team, it will be even better

Spotlight on Mediators Fern Stasiuk is a Technical Senior Sourcer of defense cleared professionals and engineers for Raytheon Intelligence, Information and Services. She has been in executive search for over thirty years utilizing mediation and negotiation as an integral part of the business. Her interest in mediation was sparked by participating as the petitioner in a civil suit when her cat was injured during a stay at a boarding kennel. She completed mediation training and became a Certified Mediator in 2012. She holds a Master’s degree from Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts. Civil cases are her favorite to mediate. Fern enjoys helping people focus on working through their conflict rather than the emotions surrounding the issue. “When mediation works, a conflict is resolved, tensions melt away and people shake hands,” Fern states, adding that this outcome offers her great satisfaction. Ingrid Beer has been a Volunteer Mediator with DRC for three years. She works mostly on small claims court and community mediations. “I love mediating for the DRC,” says Ingrid. “…I know what a benefit mediation is to our communities.”

Ingrid says that her “payment” comes in the form of wisdom gained from learning about the process and people, something that is unique to mediation. Her biggest reward with mediation is when two people shake hands after reaching mutual agreement. “I know that I’m a part of helping two people stay friends instead of enemies.”
All-Access Business Banking gives your business the red carpet treatment.
She credits one of her mentors, William Paskey, with helping her become more comfortable with the challenges of mediation. Ingrid says that another mentor, Michael Nunziata, taught her to “Protect the Process,” which she views as being aware of the importance of mediation and adhering to the mediator code of ethics. “I’m really grateful for this opportunity,” adds Ingrid. At Crystal Run Healthcare, we are more than just physicians. We are one of the first medical practices – not only in the Hudson Valley, but in the country – to pioneer the use of Electronic Health Records (EHR). We created an environment where providers, nurses, technologists, and support staff can share a patient’s information instantly, with the touch of a button. An environment where errors are minimized, appropriate care is initiated sooner, and communication among a patient’s healthcare team is enhanced. We are pioneers and we are changing the healthcare landscape.
