The August Membership Breakfast took a little road trip to Woodbury Premium Outlets new Market Hall and the event was yet another successful and fabulous OC Chamber of Commerce breakfast. This month we were hosted by Woodbury Common Premium Outlet in their impressive Market Hall. Fabulous food provided

by Pret a Manger and Le Pain Quotidien. And a great big thank you to Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union for being our August Chamber breakfast sponsor.

Businesses are choosing Orange County as their new home and our panelists provided insight into “Why Orange County?” with moderator Josh Sommers - Focus Media, Inc. The list of panelists was impressive and consisted of the Orange Countys best. We were honored to have Orange County Executive Steven M. I've recently noticed that clients and prospects are confused by the differences between first and third party Cyber Insurance and Computer related Crime Insurance. In a few words, I'll try to introduce you to the differences.

Cyber Liability Insurance is primarily intended to allow your business to transfer the risk of getting sued as a result of being hacked and having personal and private data stolen from your network or devices. Depending upon the policy form, this can include both paper data and computer data. Also, third party (vendor or customer) data as well as employee data. Data here refers to personal and private information. Names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, social security numbers, etc.

In addition to protection from lawsuits, Cyber Liability Insurance should also include the notification costs and credit monitoring costs your business may be required to pay as a result of State

Cyber Liability can often also include first party costs (costs to you, not associated with a third party seeking compensation from damages). These are items like forensic experts and other computer system remediation that may be necessary to diagnose and restore your systems to normal working conditions.

Additionally business interruption and extra expense can be insured on a cyber liability policy as well. As well as cyber extortion related incidents.

While Computer Funds Transfer Fraud, and Social Engineering Coverage are examples of crime coverage. The intent of Funds Transfer Fraud is to provide you coverage if your Funds, held by a Bank, are stolen by a third party through your systems. An example of which is a phishing scheme that allows a perpetrator the ability to access your

business bank accounts and move money to their accounts. Whereas Social Engineering crimes are typically when a business gets a false bill or invoice, often through email, and pays the bill instead of questioning the source. The money goes to some off shore account and the robbers get away often without a trace.

Or similar Computer Fraud Crime coverage which provides crime protection if a third party accesses one of your computers directly and gains access to your funds. In this case again, your assets are taken, not those of a client, vendor or employee.

So, to summarize, there are different flavors of Cyber related insurance coverage as discussed here, third party liability "Cyber Liability" coverage and Computer related crime coverage. Any questions?

OC Chamber of Commerce Names Membership Services Coordinator Phillip Newhard has been named Membership Services Coordinator at the Orange County Chamber of Commerce.

He is responsible for ensuring proper on-boarding of new members and their best use of benefits for maximum success with the chamber. He will provide support to the Director of Membership and is responsible for the all phases of Membership support services including

ORANGE PULSE HONOR (Helping Others Needing Our Resources) In 1972, a small group of concerned citizens in the Middletown area got together and formed the Emergency Housing Committee. The committee envisioned owning a building that would serve people in need of temporary housing. In 1974, the first shelter opened, and the Emergency Housing Group, now known as HONOR, was born and has been meeting the needs of Orange County residents since. HONOR does all this at no cost to the individual needing help. Since then, services provided have expanded to meet the needs of the community.

HONOR’s Adult and Family Shelters provide men, women and families shelter, nutritious meals, transportation and various types THE HONOR TEAM of counseling. On any given evening, HONOR is ready to house over 100 people. A Friend’s House provides shelter and support to homeless and runaway youths be-tween the ages of 1 and 17. Stephen Saunders Residence provides permanent housing and support to individuals with disabilities or a history of chronic homelessness. Ecclesia House provides transitional housing for homeless, single women. HONOR Recovery provides residential treatment services to those suffering from a substance abuse disorder. HONOR INDUSTRIES is a vocational program that affords participants the opportunity to experience a work environment where both hard and soft skills can be nurtured and developed. HONOR’s Living Independently Through New knowledge and Services (LINKS) program ANNUAL TRE E LIG HTING helps residents develop a mutually formulated independent living plan.

Financial Case Management Services provide representative payeeship and financial management. Aftercare Services help guests, who have been positively discharged, ensure ongoing independence. HONOR’s Food Pantry serves over 50,000 meals to the community at large, and our cafeteria serves over 150,000 meals annually to residents in our shelters. HONOR’s services are extensive and varied, and the above mentioned programs are just an overview of some of the services.

New York-Based Angry Orchard Launches Understood in Motion 02, New Bi-Coastal American Cider Collaboration With Oregon-Based E.Z. Orchards COLLABORATION CELEBRATES THE NUANCES OF APPLE VARIETIES FROM NEW YORK AND OREGON STATE CONTRIBUTED BY ANGRY ORCHARD, CHAMBER MEMBER

East coast meets west coast with Understood in Motion 02, a collaboration between Angry Orchard Hard Cider (Walden, NY), America’s leading cider maker, and E.Z. Orchards Cider (Salem, OR), expert cider apple orchardists. This new cider was born of two American cider makers’ shared commitment to raising awareness of the cider industry, as well as their friendship and appreciation for apples.

Collaborations like this, commonly popular among craft brewers, give cider makers the opportunity to combine techniques and apple varieties to develop something completely new, allowing drinkers to experience an innovative and unique cider. As the second release within this collaboration series, Understood in Motion 02 pays homage to traditional cider making, yet uses experimental wild fermentation techniques taking place at both Angry Orchard and E.Z. Orchard’s cider houses.

Understood in Motion 02 is an expert blend of both wild fermentations, resulting in a dry, balanced cider that showcases a bittersweet apple flavor with notes of raw

honey and oak. The collaboration cider will be available for purchase in select locations in Oregon and Angry Orchard’s Cider House in Walden, NY. Understood in Motion 02 was crafted with carefully selected apples from both the east and west coasts: Bittersweet Muscadet de Lense and Marie Menard from Oregon State, and heirloom, acid-forward Gold Rush and Northern Spy from New York. Both the Pacific Northwest and New York State have a rich history of apple growing, thanks in large part to the terroir of the region.

Each region’s sunlight, temperature, and soil impart distinct qualities to the fruit, such as low acidity in the Pacific Northwest and high acidity in Walden, which are the foundation for this cider.

The fruit was juiced and naturally fermented in a process that requires very little intervention but lots of careful attention. The result is a still, dry cider with just a touch of residual sweetness, and like wine, meant to be shared, paired with a great meal, and enjoyed with friends.

“At Angry Orchard, we’re constantly striving to create interesting ciders to enhance and grow America’s cider culture,” said Ryan Burk, Head Cider Maker at Angry Orchard. “E.Z. Orchards Cider Maker Kevin Zielinski is a long-time friend and mentor. It was a privilege to work with him on a cider that pays homage to traditional cider making, yet uses experimental wild fermentation techniques.”

The team at E.Z. Orchards is first and foremost orchardists, with a deep passion for cider’s main ingredient: the apple, and the orchard grows apples with specific cider blends in mind. Like E.Z. Orchards’ approach to its orchard, the cider makers at Angry Orchard are in pursuit of producing only the highest quality ciders, traveling the world to find unique apple varieties and ingredients to develop inventive and refreshing styles for drinkers to enjoy. Angry Orchard’s most popular style, Crisp Apple, is made with bittersweet and culinary apples from Europe, striking the perfect balance between sweet and dry. In addition to the flagship cider, Angry Orchard makes a variety of cider styles, including specialty ciders available only at the Cider House in Walden, New York—the cider’s home for research and development.

The Backstory: While hailing from opposite ends of the country, the cider makers at both Angry Orchard and E.Z. Orchards are focused on producing hard ciders using innovative techniques and high quality ingredients. Understood in Motion 02 began at the 2016 Seattle Cider Summit where the cider makers connected and decided to create something that merged their cider making techniques and local apples.

Creation: Together, the cider makers chose specific apples varieties from the Pacific Northwest and New York.

Understood in Motion 02 involves 100% wild fermentation with no intervention, a technique both cider makers are passionate about. The fermentation took place in four different locations, including in stainless steel tanks at E.Z. Orchards, and three ex-cognac barrels made of oak in Angry Orchard’s Cider House.

The very slow, cold fermentation process took up to three months, giving the final product a subtle residual sweetness. Together, the cider makers worked to blend different amounts of fermented cider to achieve a perfectly balanced, finished product.

Angry Orchard makes a variety of yearround craft cider styles, including Angry Orchard Crisp Apple, a fruit forward hard cider that balances the sweetness of culinary apples with dryness and bright acidity of bittersweet apples for a complex, refreshing taste. Despite the recent growth of hard cider in the U.S., the category is still small and relatively unknown. The Importance of Urgent Care Centers

Healthcare is always changing and adapting to patient needs. This is very true in the case of Urgent Care center use versus hospital emergency departments to provide non-emergency care. According to the American Academy for Urgent Care Medicine (AAUCM), Urgent Care centers are the main place to go for many patients when their primary care physician isn’t available, especially on evenings and weekends. It is an extension of their primary care needs on their schedule with lower costs and significantly less wait times than the emergency department. “As people are pushed into high deductible insurance plans, they are becoming more consumersavvy about where they go for non-emergent care. They are willing to shop around for quality care and service, convenience and affordability,” states Meg Bryant, author for Healthcare Dive, a website dedicated to tracking trends in healthcare.

According to the Urgent Care Association of America (UCAOA), there

are currently about 7,100 urgent care centers in the U.S. and that number is increasing every year. The public’s desire for immediate access to medical care has been the driving force behind this monumental growth as well as the unmet demand for primary care physicians. The AAUCM states that the U.S. likely will need almost 52,000 additional primary care physicians by 2025 to meet the country’s health care utilization needs, based on the article “Projecting U.S. Primary Care Physician Workforce Needs: 2010-2025”. Urgent Care centers provide critical access to medical care for acute illnesses and injuries that are not emergencies, at a much lower cost – many times at an 80% savings or more.

minor lacerations, sinus infections, rashes and other skin ailments, sprains and fractures, and much more in both children and adults. Going to the emergency department should be limited to emergency illnesses and injuries that require that level of intervention and expertise. The UCAOA reports that 97% of patients presenting at Urgent Care centers are in the right care setting, with only 3% being transferred to an emergency department. The organization also states that 13%-27% of ED visits could take place in an Urgent Care center or retail clinic.

They predict that patient volume will continue to increase through 2021 to about 15,300 urgent care patients a year at each urgent care facility.

What Is The Brain?

Everybody knows that we have a brain, but the brain is one of the most complex organs and has long been a mystery to people over the centuries. A general misunderstanding still exists around how the brain functions. For that reason, we are here to educate people on the basic functions of the brain, what happens to a brain that is negatively affected in some way, and what a healthy brain is like. Best of all, we are here to help with ideas for developing a healthier brain and talk about how the brain has what is called neuroplasticity, which means that the brain often has the ability to compensate for deficits and repair itself-especially with the right tools.

The brain is made up of billions of tiny cells called neurons, which communicate with each other in the brain through chemicals called neurotransmitters. Such chemicals include Seratonin, Dopamine, Epinephrine, and Norepinephrine. Each of these neurotransmitters has a specific function in the brain which plays a critical role in mood and behavior. They can be affected at the ages of young adulthood, especially during and after pregnancy when hormones are frequently shifting and major changes are occurring in the body and brain.

Additionally, these neurotransmitters may be altered in a positive and/or negative direction through diet, exercise, therapy, and medication. Future publications will describe in detail what happens to the brain when these chemicals are altered and how we can take steps to balance them in a positive direction as best as possible. For now, let us continue with a brief overview on how the brain functions.

As previously mentioned, we have billions of neurons. These neurons are connected with the body through electrical impulses that transmit at the speed of light through nerves that run up and down the spinal cord. All of our movements take place through this process.

When any part of the body moves, the brain sends a signal down to that part of our body and it gets sent back to the brain and back to the part of the body that moves all in literally the blink of an eye.

Finally, a discussion of how the brain works would not be complete without conversing about the various levels and lobes of the brain. The brain, specifically the Neo-Cortex (intellectual thinking/interpreting part of the brain), consists of four main lobes and is what separates us 10

from most other animals. Starting off in the back of the brain, directly behind the eyes, is the Occipital Lobe. This lobe is associated with vision and visual perception and recognition.

The Occipital Lobe is how we make sense of the visual world around us, including where we are in relation to the objects in our area, recognizing letters, among other related areas of visual functions.

Similarly, the Parietal Lobe is responsible for visual and spatial perception, sense of color, size, and shape. The Parietal Lobe is located on the top of the brain. Additionally, it is responsible for the sense of touch. The Parietal Lobe is also a key ingredient for interpreting shapes and colors. On the other side of the brain is the Temporal Lobe. This area of the brain is affiliated with memory, hearing, musical awareness, organization and sequencing skills; as well as comprehension of language, and expressive and receptive language. It is the area of the brain where memories are stored and language is processed. There is a logical component to this area of the brain where language can be sequenced and tasks can be broken into coherent parts that are manageable to accomplish.

Last, but certainly not least, is the Frontal Lobe of the brain. As the name indicates, the Frontal Lobe is located at the front of the brain. It is associated with problem solving, judgement, initiation, planning/anticipation, impulse control, self-monitoring, motor planning, personality/emotions, self-awareness, attention/concentration, and mental flexibility. In many ways, the Frontal Lobe represents the heart of who we are. It is commonly called the Executive Functioning part of our brain and is the part of the brain that is commonly thinking and working to help us focus on the task at hand, process sensory information, and shift gears as necessary between tasks.

Since the age of twelve with her grandmother as her guide, Gail Roberson, Pastor and founder of Rhema Family Center in New Windsor was standing on milk crates preaching in church. She knew at a very young age that she had a spiritual calling and the desire to preach the word of God never left her. Pastor Roberson originally from Castle Hill in The Bronx, made her way to Orange County, where she decided to plant her roots and preach not only the word of God but also the importance of family. Originally based on Broadway in the City of Newburgh she needed to find a new home, so she and her friend ventured to New Windsor and were drawn to a church that she would now call home. She rented the space for five years until this past April when the then Pastor of the location offered to sell her the church. With the encouragement of her Deacon Reggie Hank, she decided she would follow her heart and take on the challenge. With the help of her friends and family she has been slowly making the church a safe place for all to worship, because she strongly believes that “regardless of where we come from, we are family and we will grow together and we are one.” There have been several challenges since she has taken over the aging building, such as the roof caving in but she perseveres and with the help of Deacon Reggie Hank and Brother Anthony Coleman, the repairs are being made to the church and services continue. Proving she is a Pastor with a mission to serve and help her community, even with all the challenges, she still offered Vacation Bible School to all of her congregation this summer, for the entire summer, free of charge. She said she “really wanted to do something for the young people at her church” she wanted them to have fun and without an actual plan she opened her doors for the entire summer with no cost to the families. Her focal point “zero in on academics and concentrate on that all summer. Mentor, teach and show them there is something better out there if you put the work in” she wants to teach the children to do more in their community, home and in school. Pastor Roberson says she “takes great pride” in being able to provide this summer program to the families in her congregation.

When asked about the name of her church, Pastor Roberson says it used to be named “Rhema Christian Worship Center” but she realized it was too long and it didn’t really capture the essence of her message so she decided to shorten the name and changed it to “Rhema Family Center.” She chose to remove “Christian Worship” and change it to “Family” because she said “family is the core of the service” and the true identity of the church. Since the move and the change of the name, Pastor Roberson is happy to share that people are coming from all over to attend services at the church, from Middletown to Cornwall on the Hudson and even Poughkeepsie to name a few. She wants everyone to know that all are welcomed. There is no focus on denomination but instead on family and spiritual direction, “we love everybody” and that is the message she wants everyone to walk away with. Of her journey so far the Pastor says “I am enjoying the ride.”

11th Annual Golf for Charity Outing Raises Over $50,000 for Catholic Charities of Orange and Sullivan - It was a great day to play for a cause at the Catholic Charities Community Services of Orange and Sullivan Golf for Charity event. The 11th annual outing, hosted at West Hills Country Club in Middletown, raised more than $50,000 in support of the emergency food and shelter assistance programs provided by the not-for-profit agency in Orange and Sullivan Counties. Catholic Charities’ board member Tom Larsen, Senior Vice President of Government and Public Relations at Mediacom Communications Corporation and Goshen resident, served as the golf outing committee chairperson. “Thanks to the generous support from sponsors, golfers, raffle donors, committee members, and volunteers, the 2017 Catholic Charities’ golf outing was the most successful event to date,” said Larsen.

How Far Can We Go Into Tomorrow, Today?

Everyone wonders how to be at the “cutting edge” of everything. The funny thing is, it can actually be an incredibly bad thing if you go charging into the world of tomorrow blindly. You see, there’s always a thing in the world of technology called “the bottleneck.”

It’s the one thing that holds everyone back and it can be used to predict what technologies will arise and what technologies need to be put on hold. The best way to make the concept clear is to imagine a real world bottle; if you pour it out, the amount of liquid that comes out is limited by the width of the “neck” of the bottle. If you widen the base of a bottle, it can hold more liquid, but the “neck” of the bottle will always limit the rate that you can pour, making the idea of expanding any other spot to maximize pour speeds a fool’s errand.

In terms of tech, we have the same concept limiting us in other ways. If a person is playing an online game with a powerful PC, but their Wi-Fi connection is slow, their game “lags” or slows down.

The bottleneck for a lot of things are internet speeds, but depending on what your next big idea is, you can hit any number of bottlenecks, whether it be screen resolution, the read/write speed of a device, or the ability to access some resource. The thing I find that defines a person who will be successful, versus

a person who will not be, is how one approaches these bottlenecks. You cannot just “get around” a bottleneck, and if you try, you’re just widening the base of the bottle, metaphorically speaking.

As a web developer, the history of bottlenecks in my field has been interesting to track. In the bad old days, a website was just a place where people could look at blocks of text.

A thing called Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) generated the blocks of text and it specifies things like whether the blocks of text were lists, paragraphs, or titles for a page. These blocks of text were available for anyone to view on the internet, across seas and skies, but tough luck if you wanted to set the font of that text block or make it blue. This was fixed when Cascading Style Sheets(CSS) came onto the field. HTML and CSS in the early days allowed for some colorful blocks of text for some interesting reads, but with an internet based solely on the first iteration of HTML and CSS, we would never see YouTube, Facebook, or any of the other sites predominant on the web today. The original bottlenecks in the web based software, hardware, and connections have been torn down as the coding languages and hardware have evolved, and nowadays things like videos and animations don’t require anything fancy, just HTML5.

Before HTML was capable of handling videos, a thing called Flash existed. Flash handled animations, videos, and some games even. You probably remember it from sites like Newgrounds.com and a few of the other early websites, but it has almost completely disappeared now.

In some cases, it isn’t even supported by browsers anymore. Flash was able to exist because of the limitations of the native functionality of HTML, which is one of the basic building blocks of the internet. However, the amount of effort to get past the basic limitations of the web was massive and very expensive as it tried to fight through the bottleneck.

The effects the HTML video bottleneck had on Flash illustrates the need to wait

for technology if you don’t want to be left behind, as anything you build under the constraints of a bottleneck will inevitably be inferior to anything built when the neck later widens, and anything built upon it will be made obsolete. Flash was expensive to maintain, but no longer held a reason after HTML5 to rationalize such expenses, essentially killing off sites that at one time built their purpose around Flash.

Right now, the bottlenecks we face in the field have very little to do with what code we can write, the limits we DO face are mostly what baggage others bring with them to our sites. Any web forum anywhere can tell you how much of a nightmare it is to do a modern site in a way that Internet Explorer can handle, and Safari isn’t much better. It gets worse when we have people using browsers that are ten years outdated or more. While compensating websites for compatibility issues, web developers are stuck with the old tricks that we have used for years, because for many people those are the only tricks their browsers can handle.

The new tricks become more and more tempting every day too. On one client’s website, we had a design that required one of these new tricks; clipping masks to be specific. Clipping masks let you shape any element you want to be any shape you want, and they’re really neat. Sadly, I realized that after implementing them on a page, that Mozilla Firefox (A browser that is really on top of things compared to most) hadn’t implemented clipping masks yet. Funny enough, before I could give this bad news to everyone, the absolute newest update for Firefox that released that day added clipping mask support. That was pretty amazing since it meant I managed to implement a feature the same day it was fully supported by every browser (Except Internet Explorer, as I expected, which I had to create an approximated workaround for.) In terms of bottlenecks though, that’s the biggest one for me, browser support.

Right now, we have our hands tied on a lot of tech that’s coming our way, and it’s

all pretty exciting that one day we can use it. I’ve personally been eyeing up a nice little experimental CSS element that lets me edit images by just using CSS. But in a world where the cutting edge is the goal, and compatibility is a necessity, us web developers are left in a strange position where the timeless question of “Are you able to do it?” becomes more and more complicated to answer. On one hand, I COULD build a whole new thing for the web using this new code. However, that new app would only work for a few users, and it’s uncertain on if it will ever be fully supported. In general, while the ability for things to work on my screen is pretty easy to achieve, I can’t build anything until it’s something that will work on most screens.

Being aware of my biggest bottleneck, browser support may be rather frustrating to me, but it’s also how we stay ahead of the game. As I look at the things that aren’t supported, I’m aware of the fact that one day soon, they will be supported and I can think of the tidal wave of neat new things I can build the moment that the browsers let me do it. But learning from things like Flash, I don’t dare try to “hack” my way through, and instead looking to the future, knowing the things that are possible in it. Knowing your industry’s bottlenecks is exactly the way to stay ahead in your industry. In short, you shouldn’t be on the cutting edge if your audience is nowhere near the blade, but always be ready for the day when your limitations will change.
