With the arrival of a new General Manager at Stewart International Airport, this is the perfect time to point out the airport’s value to our community and once again urge local folks to use it or lose it.

Ed Harrison is Stewart Airport’s new General Manager, taking over for Rich Heslin, a gentleman who came to Stewart three years ago and was promoted to General Manager of Newark Liberty International Airport. Rich did a fine job at Stewart and the Chamber was fortunate to have him on our Board of Directors.

Ed Harrison comes to Stewart from Newark Airport, where he was Manager of Properties and Commercial Development, supervising an aviation real estate portfolio that generated $800 million annually. Since assuming operation of Stewart in 2007, the Port Authority of NY & NJ has invested millions in the airport. In 2007, they committed several million dollars for short-term projects, including taxiway improvements, parking lot expansion, 200 additional new seats in the terminal, and a new access road. In December 2011, the Port Authority Board of Commissioners approved a $20 million expansion of the airport's passenger terminal. Year after year, the PA continues to invest millions in the facility.

The Port Authority is a great corporate citizen. They take their responsibilities to the community very seriously, working closely with community leaders and elected officials throughout the region on a variety of community-based initiatives. They are a strong proponent of noise-abatement programs in local schools, a leader in the use of alternative-fueled vehicles and a major funder of the Council for Airport Opportunity and Air Service Development Office.

Every year, the Chamber partners with the Port Authority to host a conference on how local companies can do business with the agency. A date for the next conference will be announced soon.

Stewart International Airport has a long and wonderful history that goes back to 1930 when local aviation buff Archie Stewart donated 220 acres of land to the City of Newburgh to be used as an airport. Fast forward 84 years, when one of the world’s foremost transportation and commerce entities is working 24/7 to make Stewart the great regional airport that the Hudson Valley needs and deserves.

Orange County Chamber Of Commerce Announces Appointment Of New President Lynn Allen Cione, Executive Director of the Goshen Chamber of Commerce since 2008, has been named the new President of the Orange County Chamber of Commerce, it was announced today by Board Chairman Tom Sullivan. Cione will succeed Dr. John A. D’Ambrosio, who was the Orange County Chamber President for the past 33 years. Cione will take office on September 2, 2014.

“We looked carefully at a lot of candidates, both locally and from outside the area,” said Sullivan, “and Lynn Cione quickly rose to the top in terms of experience, attitude, energy and enthusiasm. She doubled membership in the Goshen Chamber and significantly increased that chamber’s position and reputation in Orange County, the region and the state. I look forward to the vitality and leadership that she will bring to our chamber.”

In addition to her membership accomplishments at the Goshen Chamber, Cione tripled sponsorship revenue, spearheaded government advocacy initiatives and created the Goshen Chamber’s first community expo, resulting in sold out vendor space and a substantial profit.

“I am honored to succeed such an established Chamber executive as Dr. John D’Ambrosio,” said Cione. “I look forward to promoting the Chamber as Orange County’s premier membership and

business advocacy organization. It is my goal to expand cooperation and support between local businesses, government and community leaders, with a focus on increasing the chamber membership to reflect the diversity and innovation of our business community.”

Community Action Celebrates 50 Years

The homeless are invisible. It’s not just because they tend to be overlooked; it’s because they are hiding from sight or blending in while walking to work or taking care of their children.

This was one of the key messages at the recent Regional Economic Community Action Program’s (RECAP) Economic Reality of the Hudson Valley Symposium, one of many such gatherins comprising the NYS Community Action Association’s (NYSCAA) Poverty Tour aimed at shedding light on the struggles faced by the state’s low-income individuals and families. This symposium, held in the chapel of the Newburgh Salvation Army, was about more than awareness, however. It was about progress made and work remaining to be done, as this year marks the 50th anniversary of Pres. Lyndon B. Johnson’s declaration of the War on Poverty and, therefore, of community action programs. RECAP itself is about to turn 50 and highlighted its numerous successful programs and services including: • • • • •

In-House Application Process (IHAP) Western Orange County Head Start Emergency Food Pantry Supportive housing Fresh Start Café

Parole Re-Entry Program (PREP) Energy conservation Addiction services Advocacy/case management

Proof of the effectiveness of these programs was presented by speakers who owe much to them. Tiombe Tallie Carter, Esq., a recipient of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Award, who spoke on child welfare, is a Head Start success story. “I am a proud supporter of RECAP,” she says. “The work RECAP does to eradicate poverty is extraordinary. It is heartwrenching work and as an organization, RECAP provides a model of excellence. As a child, I attended Head Start in the City of Newburgh and strongly believe in the educational and social foundation it provides to preschoolers.”

RECAP speakers included Dr. Karlene Barrett, Director of RECAP’s Trust Center, which provides individuals suffering from alcoholism and substance abuse with outpatient treatment, and Ariel Tavares, Director of RECAP’s Emergency Food Pantry, which can provide qualified families with a three day supply of food every 90 days. Anthony Luogameno gave a live testimonial of RECAP’s addiction services.

Other organizations were present at the symposium as well, with Karla Digirolamo, CEO of NYSCAA, representing the Poverty Tour, Rabbi Joel Schwab of Temple Sinai in Middletown speaking on behalf of HONORehg, Inc., and Nadia Allen, Executive Director of the Mental Health Association in Orange County, discussing the link between mental illness and poverty. Many people feel poverty is a problem too big to solve. They miss the point of symposiums such as this. “We have waged a successful fight against poverty in the face of increasingly high odds,” says Digirolamo. This fight, she adds, “requires, first of all, that we believe we can end poverty.”

Jean Sexton, a Branch Manager for Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union, who sits on RECAP’s Board of Directors as well as on the Chamber Board, is looking for people whose beliefs echo those of Digirolamo.“We’re always looking for more board members and more involvement,” she explains.

RECAP’s mission sums it up: “To mobilize and coordinate public and private resources to address the basic needs of low-income people while they attain the skills, knowledge, motivation and opportunities needed to become economically self-sufficient.”

The Promise of Community Action makes it happen: “Community Action changes people’s lives, embodies the spirit of hope, improves communities, and makes America a better place to live. We care about the entire community, and are dedicated to helping people help themselves and each other.”

The answer is simple: to make more money by reaching a bigger market.

Here are some interesting facts;

Increase Your Sales Through Exporting

• 96% of the world’s consumers live outside the US, so the potential for sales growth is phenomenal.

There are strong indications that the economy is getting better and, not surprisingly, our balance of trade is improving slightly as well. Since small businesses are the backbone of the American economy, it follows that the export market is important for that sector too. So, as a small business owner, why would you want to export?

• Most exports are done by small and medium companies; 97% of all exporters are not big companies.

• Export activities create jobs in the US. It is estimated that one out of every five manufacturing jobs depends on exports and that

each $1 billion in exports creates 6,000 jobs.

Still not convinced? Let’s look at other good reasons why exporting is a great idea.

• Most of the world’s exporters are small businesses.

• There are lowcost options to market and promote overseas, take care of the logistics and paperwork, finance, and get paid. These are costs of doing business, period.

• American products and services are highly regarded around the world, so even if your product is not known, the good image of US products and services will have a positive impact on your capacity to penetrate a market successfully.

• There are appropriate steps to ensure that you do get paid and that your product and/or services are protected. You need to do your due diligence to sell in any market, including the US. • Again, there are a lot of resources available today, both for hire and free, that support small business exports.

Granted, exporting is not for everybody, nor is every business activity suitable for exporting. But here are some easy steps you can take to self-test if you are a suitable candidate: • Is there a market in country “X” for my goods/ services? If so, how big is the market, which countries are the primary importers? Why do they buy these goods/services?

• Select a market. Many newbies start selling in Canada and Mexico to gain experience in “easierto-reach” markets.

• Establish how to promote and market overseas.

Both the federal and NYS governments have support programs and will provide information and services either free of charge or at nominal cost.

• Determine your shipping strategy. There is no better way than to contact a reliable broker or freight forwarder.

• Determine how you will get paid. Do research and consult with a bank with experience in international trade.

• Don’t do it alone. The NYS SBDC’s International Business Development (IBD) program has strategically positioned small- and medium-sized businesses to take maximum advantage of business and trade opportunities in the global marketplace. Contact your local SBDC; they will help you establish an export strategy, will identify the resources that better suit your business and will guide you through the process, at no cost to you.

• And finally, ask around. You’ll be surprised how many local businesses are quietly making money by exporting, and so should you.

A special section will be devoted to job postings (call the Chamber if you have jobs you want to post). Because a lot of people attend trade shows to pick up pointers on how to do business more effectively, our Education Hub will feature brief (15 minutes) “mini-seminars” presented by knowledgeable Chamber members on a variety of topics. Matthew Migliaccio, President of the Independent Living, Inc. Board of Directors, and Daniel Hutting, Program Manager, were recently recognized for their advocacy on behalf of individuals with disabilities by the Human Rights Commissions of Sullivan County and Orange County respectively.

The membership scholarships, which were awarded recently, were granted to eight fundraising professionals and two young professionals (under age 30).

For the third consecutive year, Ulster Insurance Services, Inc. (division of Ulster Savings Bank) has been named to Kemper Preferred’s “Inner Circle” of Independent Agents. The Inner Circle is an exclusive group of 250 independent insurance agencies countrywide that represent Kemper Preferred. The Ulster Savings Charitable Foundation awarded an $8,700 grant to the Newburgh Armory Unity Center, Inc. in support of their Early Childhood Literacy Program, $3,500 to Girl Scouts Heart of the Hudson in support of their financial literacy program and $5,000 to John A. Coleman Catholic High School.

Since March, Jacobowitz & Gubits has raised more than $4,200 for Hudson Valley nonprofit organizations, including $2,572 in May for the local chapter of the American Heart Association with the annual Tri-County Heart Walk held at Harriman State Park in Stony Point.

Orange County Land Trust will receive a $20,000 grant from the New York State Conservation Partnership Program through the New York State Environmental Protection Fund (EPF). As a joint program with the national Land Trust Alliance, the funds will be matched by nearly $1.1 million in private and local funding and will support projects across the state to protect farmland, enhance public access and recreational opportunities, and protect open space.

St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital has received the Healthgrades® Patient Safety Excellence Award for the fourth year in a row. SLCH is one of only 35 hospitals across the nation, and the only hospital in New York State to receive this distinction in each of the last four years. SLCH has also been ranked among the top 5% in the nation for patient safety in both 2013 and 2014. Also, SLCH has received provisional approval as a Level III Trauma Center from the New York State Department of Health, allowing the hospital to operate provisionally as an Area Trauma Center.

YWCA Orange County has received a grant of $30,000 from Walgreens and YWCA USA to support and enhance the not-for-profit agency’s economic empowerment programs for women. YWCA Orange County was one of just six agencies to be awarded $30,000 each, while 21 YWCAs received $5,000 each. Also, John Luedke, Executive Director and founder of the WEL Foundation, working in partnership with Middletown Honda, secured a great deal on a new Honda CRV and is covering the lease expenses for the vehicle that will be used by FISH Window Cleaning, YWCA’s job training program for women who are seeking job skills and employment in a non-traditional career field.

The Richard P. O’Beirne Memorial Foundation, administered by the Community Foundation of Orange and Sullivan, recently awarded a total of $4,500 in grants to local nonprofit organizations in the Hudson Valley. New Attraction Opens!

Chamber President Dr. John D’Ambrosio helped The Castle Fun Center in Chester celebrate the opening of their newest attraction, the slick track. The Castle added a 50,000 SF building to their facility seven years ago, with many activities including a small click track, 10,000 SF roller skating rink and Jesters Restaurant and Pub. After another expansion a few years ago, the small slick track was removed and, after many requests, was brought back as a bigger and better outdoor track.

Many factors account for the high turnover, but two major reasons are lack of proper planning and lack of funds. There are many state and government run programs that are designed to help individuals start and grow their businesses, but one problem always persists: lack of a comprehensive business plan. A good business plan will help with both major issues. For this reason, many local non-profit organizations have teamed up with schools or chambers of commerce to deliver this much-needed instruction.

M eeting the need

The Orange County SCORE Chapter #465, together with the Orange County Chamber of Commerce, has introduced special Business Start Up/Business Growth Programs. SCORE’s Entrepreneurial Success Program is designed for individuals who want to discover everything it takes to run a successful business and beat the national average.

SCORE is a national non-profit organization that has served 10.4 million entrepreneurs since 1964.

It is comprised of 11,148 volunteers, with 320 chapters across the country. In 2013 alone, SCORE helped create 38,630 new businesses, 67,319 jobs and served 330,796 clients. The ESP course that starts at the Chamber on September 15 is unique and will be taught by 10 volunteer instructors, individuals who are in the trenches, dealing with everyday business challenges.

These instructors are Edison Guzman, Charlene Finerty, Greg Hogan, Eric Egeland, John Rosenberger, Mike Mazzucca, Rolland Peacock, Frank Dunne, Paul Campanella and Cynthia Marsh-Croll. This lineup encompass all areas of running a successful business, and concentrates on helping adults create a business plan that will both increase the likelihood of getting funding, as well achieving business success.
