Chamber Launches ‘Ultimate Buy Local Program’ In its continuing efforts to encourage buying locally, the Orange County Chamber, in conjunction with SB Merchant Services, has launched a unique rewards program called Orange Advantage.

Although just officially introduced at EXPO in September, Orange Advantage already has more than 13,000 cardholders and 20,000 additional cards are on order. It’s expected that 35,000 cards will be in consumers’ hands by April 2014.

The mission of Orange Advantage, said Chamber President Dr. John D’Ambrosio, “is to support local businesses by offering rewards to consumers who shop at those businesses.”While Orange Advantage merchants must be Chamber members, anyone can have an O/A card. New beginnings

As the official start of the new Chamber year, October often brings with it a number of changes. This year is no different.

I’m delighted to welcome our new Chairman of the Board, Tom Sullivan. Tommy, who is President and Owner of Smith, Seaman & Quackenbush, Inc., Funeral Homes and the Hogan Funeral Home, has been a member of the Board of Directors since 2007. As our Chairman, he brings an extraordinary level of experience and incredible commitment, not only to the business community, but to the entire community in general.

My deepest thanks go to outgoing Chairman Charlie Milich, who, in 2011, assumed leadership of the Chamber under very difficult circumstances, following the untimely death of Dave Cocks. Charlie then spent the following two years guiding the Chamber through some of the toughest economic times in our history. Your commitment, leadership and dedication are very much appreciated, Charlie.

A big, hearty welcome to the five new members of our Board. It’s always so exciting to bring new faces and fresh energy onto the Board, and I’m confident that Pete, David, Paul, Linda and Jean will contribute enormously to our mission of leading the way “in creating and supporting an environment in which business will succeed and the quality of life is enhanced.”

How to Effectively Utilize a Virtual Assistant In the past we have been taught to work on our weaknesses. Psychological research has discovered that this formula will give you marginal success at best. Operating to your strengths and doing what you do best is how to be successful. But that is only part of the mix. The important piece is to delegate your weaknesses. In fact, when you delegate to someone who does something better, faster and more efficient than you, it becomes a strength.

As business owners, we need to focus our time on revenue-producing activities. In other words, those tasks and projects that will help us turn our time and efforts into dollars. However someone has to get the general administrative and bookkeeping done. And when you are a small business, it is the person who also has to network, do sales calls, provide the product/service and then be customer service.

These are a lot of hats to wear. To help with this dilemma, your business can take the official leap to the next level and hire a virtual assistant (VA).

Here are some things to consider when outsourcing your office functions:

• Figure out what you do best and consider delegating the rest.

• Don’t assume that decreasing labor costs will always provide big savings!

• Weigh efficiency against effectiveness. Seeking greater efficiency is a bad idea if it reduces your ability to meet customer and quality standards.

E A P: the k ey to your business grow th Since January 2010, dozens of business owners and prospective business owners have completed the Entrepreneurial Assistance Program (EAP) offered by the Orange County Chamber of Commerce at the Chamber Business Center in Montgomery.

EAP assists new and aspiring entrepreneurs in developing basic business management skills, refining business concepts and developing solid business plans. It also actively assists EAP participants obtaining financing for their businesses.

EAP is partially funded by a grant from Empire State Development and is offered to individuals in Orange, Sullivan, Ulster, Putnam, Dutchess, Rockland and Westchester counties.

Cynthia Marsh-Croll is Manager of EAP and also serves as one of the course instructors.

The next 10-week EAP accelerated business course will begin on February 3, 2014. The deadline for early registration (with a big discount on tuition) is January 31. Worksite Wellness Programs: Good for the Heart of Business Business owners: are your employees sitting in front of a computer all day, sitting through back-to-back meetings, conference calls, working late, racing against deadlines and managing more priorities with fewer staff? Chronic illnesses affect more than a third of working-age Americans and the costs associated with chronic diseases account for approximately 75 percent of the nation’s annual health care costs.

Through their Fit-Friendly Worksites program, the American Heart Association recognizes employers for creating a culture of wellness in the workplace. They reward companies for their progressive leadership and highlight their concern for their staff.

To create a healthier worksite, employers can make simple changes like creating walking routes, using stand-up workstations, promoting walking programs, creating online newsletters and tracking tools to motivate employees. Something as simple as allowing staff to wear athletic shoes in the workplace on designated “sneaker days” can give them greater access to physical activity.

The AHA recommends a comprehensive program that includes tobacco cessation and prevention, physical activity, stress management/reduction, early detection/screening, nutrition education, weight management, and cardiovascular disease prevention.

the card at a participating O/A business, points are accumulated that will be converted to a cash value that can be used only at O/A participating businesses. To date, more than 60 merchants have signed up as O/A merchants and anywhere from five to 10 additional businesses are joining each week. (See list of participating merchants as of October 1 on the following page).

Scott Goren and Becky Vanderloop, owners of SB Merchant Services, are handling the Orange Advantage program for the Chamber. The idea has been in the planning stages for several years, but the technology necessary to administer the program properly has only recently become available, said Goren.

“Orange Advantage cardholders will earn valuable rewards while supporting their friends and neighbors in business,” Goren explained. “One of the great things about this program is that small businesses can benefit from a large rewards program. Participating merchants will be able to attract new customers – from throughout Orange County and beyond – and reward those customers for loyalty and keep them coming back.”

The OC Chamber, in cooperation with the Warwick Valley and Sugar Loaf chambers, is hosting a bus trip from the Chamber Business Center in Montgomery to Warwick and Sugar Loaf.

We’ll meet at our 30 Scott’s Corners Drive headquarters, enjoy a continental breakfast and board the bus (provided by Rolling V) around 9:00 a.m.

First stop is Warwick, where we’ll be met by our friends from the Warwick Chamber and the Warwick Merchants Guild who will hand out goody bags complete with coupons from select Warwick merchants. The town will be decorated for the holidays and that sight alone will be worth the trip.

After everyone enjoys lunch (there are 45 eateries in Warwick!), we’ll return to the bus and head for nearby Sugar Loaf for shopping at some of the most unique stores you’ll find anywhere. The plan is to leave Sugar Loaf around 5:00 p.m. for the trip back to Montgomery.

All this is for just $22 per person and includes the breakfast at the Chamber.

DocuWare is a Chamber Gold Corporate Partner DocuWare Corporation, a subsidiary of the DocuWare Group, a global leader in the technology field of Enterprise Content Management (ECM), has reason to celebrate a first year anniversary in their new office space at Stewart International Airport in Orange County.
