PRESIDENT’S GREETING W

elcome back to school and welcome to the first issue of the Probe for 2017! I’m sure those holidays were just far too long and boring for all of you, and you couldn’t wait to jump into the extra long first semester 6 weeks early. Right? No? Just me then... This year promises to be full of drama and excitement, I mean how can it not with someone as handsome as me at the helm? That’s not to say that the rest of the committee this year aren’t beautiful and wonderful people, they just look that way to the rest of you because you’re comparing them to me. On a more serious note however we do have an amazing team this year working behind the scenes to support and enhance your lives both inside of OHCWA and out.

2016 saw the first cohort of the DMD programme make it to their final year, and in 2017 we now have the pleasure of seeing them graduate and go out to work in the community. And while most had the good sense to run as fast and as far from OHCWA as they were able, special mention needs to go to Haytham El-Sakka and last year’s very own president Bec Penco, who for some reason just couldn’t bring themselves to leave - and instead took jobs working on the first floor as dentists. SMH.

This year our social reps, Sarah Bestall and Claire Willis outdid themselves with Prime and Bond - moving the venue for the first time in a number of years, and I think everybody will agree that the whole night was a fantastic success! Since then, they’ve managed to organise a special deal between the UDSS and Charlie’s Bar, so I encourage as many of you as possible to get down there every Friday night to join us for drinks and obligatory bitching about the course.

Our education reps, Natasha Koelmeyer and Anjuli Kaney have, unlike anyone else, elected to stay on in their same positions. Talk about gluttons for punishment. They’ve done a fantastic job of helping the first year students settle in to life here at OHCWA, by organising a handbook that answers all those questions the rest of us really wanted to ask back in our first days, as well as a series of transition lectures. The lectures, taught by older years, were well received and designed to teach the first years without backgrounds in some of the core sciences, the basics of what they need to know.

Sports will get a big shot in the arm this year from our new reps Lyndon Abbott and Jay Vaddagiri. There will be a continuation of weekly social sports events, as well as inter-university soccer

6 PROBE ISSUE 1 2017

matches with Notre Dame’s medical students. The first of the bi-annual sports days has already been a massive success - with the boys bringing us a hilariously violent time through the medium of bubble soccer.

I’m sure you’re all aware by now of the Medical and Dental Library redevelopment just across the waythe big fences and tradies tend to give it away. Now I know losing access to a key study area for the best part of a year is a bit of a blow to those of you who actually like to study from time to time, however having sat in on a couple of meetings with regards to the new design I can tell you the results will be well worth it. The library staff and architect have taken a lot of feedback from students as to what they’d like in the new facility, and what they are producing will be a functional and modern study space ideal for both

group work and individual study. I would also like to take this opportunity to remind people that in lieu of there being no library close by, a librarian will be stationed in the foyer outside of the KJG Sutherland LT at Wednesday lunch times, to assist anyone that needs it.

Well I’ve rambled on for long enough

I think. But I would like to take this opportunity to thank the sponsors for their continued support of the UDSS, as their contributions allow us to provide all of you with bigger and better events. I’d also like to thank Paul Chung for stepping up into the role media rep at very short notice in order to help us get this issue of Probe out to you all. Now all of you get back to work, you don’t have time to dilly-dally about reading this! There’s patients to see and lab work that won’t do itself!

The Annual UDSS Dental Dinner 2016

On the 2nd of December 2016, both OHCWA students and staff descended on the Crown Ballroom to celebrate the end of another year at THE formal event of the UDSS calendar. In particular, the night would be extra special for the first graduating cohort of the DMD programme as they reached the end of their journey.

Special thanks to the 2016 Senior Social Representatives Kathryn Fong and Sue Nguyen for taking time out of their busy schedules to organise such a memorable evening.

Common Room Renovation

The great news starting 2017: we had a brand new common room to study and relax in! The bad news: we started 2017 on Jan 16th, an eye-watering 6 weeks before the majority of other courses started.

Back to the great news, our common room has had a serious facelift. Gone was the awkward snake bench, the sofas that had turned from black to multi-colour from the various lunches over the years and sitting down on a chair only to have it lurch unsteadily as it was broken. A huge amount of consideration went into the planning of the common room, to create a multi-purpose room with practicality yet style. Our snake bench went, to be replaced with a larger bench, at a lower height much better suited to both individual and group study. Our sofas were replaced with much more hardwearing, easy-clean upholstery – perfect for a room with many hungry students racing through lunch. All of our chairs were replaced and more tables were provided, to allow more students to eat lunch at one time.

Our microwaves have their very own special cabinet, so the kitchenette can once again be a place of washing dishes and getting coffees, without having to brave breaching the microwave lines. To top it off, we now have our own library, giving financially struggling students access to much needed textbooks, with longer loans periods than those provided by the library – especially for high demand textbooks. The timing has been perfect – with the refurbishment of the Medical and Dental Library, the improved table and bench space for study has provided a fantastic informal replacement study place, nicely complementing the 2nd floor computer lab. An immense thank you to the UWA Alumni fund, the School of Dentistry and the UWA dental alumni for financing our fantastic new common room!

EDUCATION Report

Thought you got rid of us? Think again – because Koely and Anj are back as your Education reps for 2017. Writing this makes us very angry cause it is week 13 and we’re 13 weeks behind on Oral Medicine. Despite convincing ourselves to catch up on the ever-mounting workload, we are failing to do because we are busy writing this. Anyway, now that we’ve being coerced into writing, here goes:

UDSS Education created a pilot student run “Transition Lecture Series” to provide students from a non-science background a fundamental understanding of basic scientific concepts. The lectures included crash courses in microbiology, physiology, anatomy, neuroanatomy and pharmacology. These lectures were deemed to be of great use to our 1st years and we’ve decided to implement this more concretely in the next year. Additionally, UDSS also organsied student run revision lectures for first year students prior to their examinations with the intent of helping them settle into the rigor of dental school.

UDSS Education also launched a monthly journal club in 2017, with the intent of critically analysing original research to promote a better understanding of the research process, and to advocate evidence-based dental practice. Our sincere thanks to Dr. Patel for generously giving up his time for serving as the mediator and sharing his knowledge with us. Also special thanks to Sophia Hawes for coordinating and co-organising

this initiative. Additionally, We’ve aimed to expand our UDSS library with providing students access to hard copies of Journals. We are thrilled to host the publications of the British Dental Journal in our UDSS Library. Please feel free to browse through them in your spare time.

We also organsied a charity bake sale to raise funds to support the victims of the East African Famine and the $400 collected was donated through “Save the Children Australia.” We are very grateful to the generous contribution of our volunteer dental student bakers for giving up their time and efforts amidst their busy timetable.

We also commemorated Easter celebrations through distributing Easter Eggs to our dental students (we take no blame for your caries)!

PRIME AND BOND 2017

What I was asked to do: write an article for Prime & Bond 2017

What I have done: Force as many dental puns into one paragraph as physically possible

ONthe 10th of February, the first years made their first impressions at the opening social event of the year – Prime & Bond! - and a great impression they made! The older years were able to share their wisdom, whilst getting loose (and drinking to excess)! I cannot articulate how great it was to see everybody escaping from the daily grind and filling the good vibes – Your dance moves were off the scale and your singing was class1. A big thankyou to The Captain Stirling hotel for being such a prime location for our bonding and helping us to organise an event that didn’t denture bank balances – you deserve a crown!

But brace yourselves, we have a unique event for you coming up soon to cure the exam blues (before you go loupy). Hopefully it will help you ‘unwined’ after a busy semester, I am sure you will needle little break. See you all there party enamels (oral b mad) – we guarantee it’s going to be a knock out.

Why more schools teach with A-dec

The difference is in the details.

For nearly 50 years, dental schools and government facilities throughout the world have continually chosen A-dec.

Considering the rigorous selection process involving educators, administrators, dentists, accountants, procurement officers, property engineers, volumes of third-party data—and lengthy evaluation periods—that’s a lot of criteria to pass. Still, A-dec is the top choice.

• More schools and government facilities worldwide use A-dec than any other dental manufacturer.

• Three out of four dental schools across the U.S. and Canada are equipped with A-dec.

• The majority of dentists are learning on A-dec equipment. It’s an investment with many future returns.

Family Fun Day

In all honesty when I was first kindly nudged (basically forced) into volunteering for Family Fun Day by Chris, I thought I was in for a boring day of putting a fake smile on my face and telling everyone how much I love dentistry at UWA and how OHCWA is my favourite place to be etc. How pleasantly surprised I was indeed! As it got closer to the date, I heard more and more about the great initiatives being prepared and put into play for Family Fun Day and I started looking forward to attending the day. Suddenly I found myself not only eager to volunteer but also very eager to participate and attend the day.

Despite this, I was even further amazed on the day! As those who attended would’ve noticed, I found it hard to stay at my assigned post as I kept getting distracted by all the things there were to do on the day. A petting zoo?! A DJ?! Free food and coffee?! A combination of things that I never thought would fit together nicely, suddenly made OHCWA seem like a lively and fun place to be…which it is all the other days anyway right… Anyway, all in all it was a great day with lots of fun activities and I hope the dental school has more activities like this in the future as it was definitely a great success!

UDSS SPORTS REPORT

Only a few months gone in the year and already two sporting events have been ticked off on the UDSS calendar - the UDSS Sports Day, and one of two soccer matches between UDSS and MSAND.

SPORTS DAY ON

the 5th of March 55 dental students made it to UWA’s Riley Oval for a morning of bubble soccer, sprinting and eating. Perth’s summer certainly didn’t disappoint but with two eskies full of ice cool drinks everyone stayed hydrated and their competitive spirits were fuelled. Bubble soccer was a clear hit with everyone jumping into a bubble and trying their best to kick a goal, or just having a laugh as they bumped into each other. That said, on each changeover as people clambered their way into a sweaty ball, it certainly left a lasting impression.

After two hours of running, kicking, bumping and sweating (lots of sweating), the sprint competition was held which saw Joanne Tan (DMD 2) and Lyndon Abbott (DMD 2) come out on top. Obviously a reflection of the much higher ability and standards of the exceptional second year cohort. Then as egos were nursed (sorry Parnian), 240 slices of pizza were delivered and quickly filled even the hungriest of stomachs.

Jay and Lyndon would like to thank all the incredible sponsors who made this day possible and look forward to putting on an even better Sports Day next semester.

UDSS VERSUS MSAND SOCCER MATCH FIRST LEG (FINAL SCORE 2-4)

On the 8th of April this year our very own UDSS Soccer Team had the first of their bi-annual match-ups against Notre Dame Medical School. Coming off a streak of comfortable wins, Notre Dame were confident leading into a crisp Freo evening kick-off at WAUHOP Park. This year’s UDSS squad featured a team of 18 managed by the capable hands of Brandon Soh (DMD2).

The match started on a much more competitive note than either side had expected, with the physical battle beginning early and one of our valued Goalkeepers, Dziki Hove having to come off due to an injury. The rest of the first half allowed the UDSS to concede a few goals followed by Goalkeeper Sam Deng wrapping on the gloves for what would be a spectacular effort guarding the net. The ref’s whistle called in half-time for some quick team strategy changes and substitutions for fresh legs going into a strong fight back in the second half. Clinical work by our defensive linemen Daniel Bontempo, Emrik Graff, Neeraj

Anand and Shixiong Tai pushed the pressure back onto Notre Dame as the UDSS managed to swish past two goals off the zippy feet of striker Alvin Vo. Notre Dame, now fearing the new scoreline snuck past the gritty Dentistry midfield manned by Paul Chung, Jono Wong, Russell Powell and Samy Francis to claim two more goals raising the score to 4-2 in the latter stages of the second half. The last 15 minutes of the game saw stiff competition and a persistent Notre Dame team attacking on all fronts, reciprocated by an exceptional effort by wingers Isaac Seguya, Peter Terzi and Michael Lai with Lyndon Abbott covering

the yardage up front. Although tensions were high, the end of the match brought on pleasant displays of sportsmanship from both faculties with an exchange of chants and handshakes on the back of a gripping 80 minutes of football, before heading up to the Pavilion for some much deserved grub. The UDSS would like to thank Daniel Nguyen and the team of Notre Dame for a great match up, and look forward to hosting them next semester for a home game and another chance to claim the win.
