Editor’s note

H

ey Everyone, another year of dent school has begun, and depending on Media Representative | how your year scored on the timetable, the 8am til 5:15 (more realistically 5:30) Claire Waldock blood, sweat and tears started. That may be a tad dramatic, but welcome back to the hectic workload that is dentistry.

I’m the 2015 media rep, and I hope to bring an entertaining read and snapshot of all the events throughout 2015 (and 2014 dent dinner) - although I’d love to bring cutting-edge, thought-provoking journalism to the table...haha, no I’d be happy if you get a few laughs at the end of the day. My qualifications? I actually didn’t stinge out on the cheap Microsoft office package and got Publisher (it makes it sooo much easier to compose this).

But in all seriousness, I hope you enjoy reading this, and any recommendations, articles or rants about whatever is grinding your gears, just flick me an email. And remember, the dent/OHCWA related memes competition is on until the last Probe is released—so keep ‘em coming!

President’s Report UDSS President | Adrian Sciarrone

A

hhh, isn’t it good to be back? The 2pm sleepins, the luxurious vacations by the beach, and WHOLE days where we didn’t think about teeth – who needs it?? Not us! What we want are 8am lectures, treatment plans, and wasting what little we have left of our youth in the back of lab making yet another special tray. Feel that excitement!!!

With all seriousness, welcome to OHCWA 2015! We have an amazing group that make up the 2015 UDSS committee and we’ve got plenty planned to make this a great year! On top of that, it seems we have a pretty awesome bunch in first year – friendly, social, smart – the complete package!

So now we have that in addition to our pretty awesome 2nd, 3rd and 5th year students. How can it get any better?

Easy - Keenan and Reezan are our social reps! For any of you that know these two slippery characters or have the pleasure of having them on snap chat, you know this is big!

Partying is what they do, and they do it well. Prime and Bond has come and gone, with everyone raving on about how good it was. What’s next you say? You’re just going to have to wait and find out…

So UDSS parties; we know that! What else do we do?

We’re the ones that have been putting those Red Bulls in the fridge – whoever’s taking them out clearly works at a faster rate than I do!

We’re trying to update our common room! We’ve applied for a grant, have staff support and have all our fingers crossed that it’ll come through. We’re having sporting competitions run by no one other than Lionel and Michael! We give you free pizza from time to time! We have magazines (you’re reading it)! We’re trying to sort out WiFi in OHCWA LT! We’re giving you the biggest event of the year – The Dental Dinner!

On a slightly more serious tone, we represent you when it comes to education. This year the class reps, education reps, the secretary and I are doing our best to give you the best education possible. We’ve all come together as one group to document all issues and have a unified and professional approach. So use us! This year we are focusing on issues with guidebooks and assessment dates as well as assessment feedback. Though we deal with all educational issues, so if there’s a problem with education – tell your class rep! Not only can they send off emails, your issues and opinions are raised at staff and UDSS meetings. You can fill out our feedback forms! You’ll see these soon, and we’ll tell you exactly what they’re used for. We’re all here to work with staff to give you the best experience possible. So again – use us!

We have so much planned for this year; it’s going to be amazing. So seriously, drop that special tray sometime and get involved in the community – you won’t regret it!

Advice for first years? “Enjoy first semester!”

Likes: Lasagna and Coca-Cola Wanted to be a ballerina but guessed she always took my school work more seriously than her dancing.

Funniest/best dent experience: Being told by a patient with a needle phobia that she give great injections.

Advice for first years? “Go to the UDSS events and make friends with people from other years“

Teresa | Treasurer Likes: Korean food! and flat whites Wanted to be a teacher but decided that a dentist is a health educator too :) Funniest/best dent experience: Making some lifelong friends in this postgraduate programme Advice for first years?

Lena | Education Rep

Likes: Pho and SSB. Wanted to be an Architect or Psychologist but thought it would be cool to work with people and be hands-on. Also, 'Dr Fang' seems suitable.

Funniest dent experience? When a 1st yr student from another degree walked into our lecture in KJG. The lecturer had just finished a sentence with “…Gingivitis …”. The 1st yr replied, thinking the lecturer had asked who he was. “..aWhat? I’m Tim... I’m guessing this isn’t Microbiology”. A classmate misheard and said “Microscopy is upstairs”. Hahaha that student probably never got to his lecture.

Advice for first years? “Stock up on TimTams”

Mei-ling | Secretary Likes: Sushi and roasted milk tea with pearls Wanted to be a doctor but decided dentistry, because she “a ticking time-bomb” Funniest/best dent experience: Receiving scratchie from her first patient!

Advice for first years? “don’t draw on rubber dams!!!”

Bec | Education Rep Likes: Dim Sum! (Bonus points if its during uni hours) and wine Wanted to be a mountain climber but decided on dentistry because she wanted an office job where she also works with her hands.

Funniest/best dent experience: During the paediatric innocence test, when Nate Ong saw dolphins and everyone else saw naked people.

Advice for first years: “In Optech: criticise your own work before the tutors do - they want to see that you know where you can improve! It also results in less heartache when they show you your errors. In clinic: Take the time to really get to know your patients. Good patients and good social skills are very valuable.”

Wanted to be a Kmart manager so he could run the toy section, but decided on dent so he could “Set my own working hours (3 day weekend!!)”

Funniest dent experience: Patient telling him "my girlfriend has tooth decay, I’m worried I might get it when we pash on".

Advice for first years? “enjoy 1st year, go to every event possible.”

Michael | Sports and Wellbeing Rep

Likes: Anything Taiwanese/Japanese/Korean and green tea (no sugar less ice) Wanted to be a sports agent for NBA players like Jerry Maguire but needed to find a job that wouldn’t disappoint my parents…Jokes…Always been around dentistry and really appreciate how important teeth are in our daily lives.

Best dent experience: That feeling when you find out the 4:30 lecture has been cancelled.

Advice for first years? “Never think your work is perfect. Critique and find something to improve. Be respectful, dental community is small.”

Likes: Hot chips and coke Wanted to study art history and become an art curator but decided on dentistry because it is hands on and you're not stuck behind a desk all day Best experience: passing 4th yr Advice for first yrs? “Pay attention from day one and revise heaps, it will make your life so much easier in 4 years time”.

Likes: Fried chicken and slurpies Wanted to be a Bollywood actress, but did dentistry as Bollywood was too full at the time Funniest/best dent experience: It’s not fun and it’s not the best Advice for first years?

Reezan | Junior Social Rep Likes: Women and women (as food & drink) Wanted to be a woman....I mean he was meant to become the prince of Bangladesh, but decided on dentistry as he heard they had burlesque at the conferences.

Claudia “Clouds” | 2nd Year Rep Claire | Media Rep Likes: Something smothered in grease with something saturated with ethanol Wanted to be Sailor Moon but decided she was rubbish at shooting random crescent moons so decided she could shoot random burs out of a drill instead (until she promptly realised they were much more effective attached to a drill).

Funniest dent experience: Trying to work out why her Frasaco maxillary central incisors looked so small during scale & clean…then being told by her tutor that she mixed up her Frasaco arches Advice for first years? “See point above regarding burs, unless you want to be in brown pants territory during your first operative OPTEC session”

Ashani | 3rd Year Rep Likes: Chicken Biryani and Mango Lassi (and no I'm not Indian) Wanted to be a Doctor/Surgeon but decided on dent when she got in the first time and didn't wanna go through GAMSAT + Interview again! Oh, hell no!!!

Best dent experience: Oral Surg rotation @ SPH, Probably cause she’s so into surgery :/ Advice for first years? “Enjoy it while it lasts...try not to complain too much...and there're no such things as 4 HDs, weekends and holidays!!”

Likes: lasagne, pizza, noodles, Katsu chicken don buri: anything dense with carbohydrates! & cappuccino, carbonated apple juice, green tea Wanted to be a dentist, momentarily an anaesthetist, and I'll always secretly wish to be a mermaid and finally decided to be a dentist to have the opportunity to treat a wide variety of patients of all ages and demographics, and every appointment will be different Best dent experience: The gratitude and appreciation her first ever clinical patient expressed when she received her full/full dentures, as well as meeting a fantastic group of fellow students across all year groups Advice for first years?

Like: Pasta - probably with tomato, garlic, olive oil and basil (In general, Italian food is better than German food - but don't tell Adrian!) and beer (shitloads) Wanted to be a biologist or train driver, but decided after becoming a biologist, that many trains had departed and life was getting a bit boring, so thought he may as well become a dentist Advice for first years? Some of these guys are playing dirty, so you better shut up and absorb. But whatever happens: first sleep over it and then act, but don't let them break you. Act through UDSS!

Likes: The peanut toffee cookie marvellous creations (clearly Mr. Cadbury was looking out for my waistline rather than his profits when he discontinued production) and 1 part sugarfree sunkist, 1 part sprite zero. On the rocks; stirred, not shaken.

Wanted to be a PE teacher but ended up in dentistry.

Best dent experience: Fun sock Thursday.

UDSS Dental 2014 Senior Social Anna Buckeridge

B

y the end of the year, most of the students and staff at OHCWA just want to journey as far away from dental-related activities as possible, only to return when summoned! However, the much anticipated Annual Dental Ball gave us some motivation to power through all those frantic end-of year clinical sessions and endless exams.

As we all gathered at the Hyatt Hotel, looking sharp and enjoying the Japanese ambience, dental school was forgotten and replaced with a definite readiness to celebrate. Everyone that attended called upon those energy reserves they never knew they had and it fuelled what was a vibrant and memorable evening.

The evening’s many highlights included being entertained by martial artists and the 2014 Dental Video, which was utter perfection – cheers to Cindy, Nick, Yousr and Ricky for all your efforts. The photobooth, backdrop and roaming photographers were kept very busy, but there were still many sneaky selfies taken! Guests were replenished with Japaneseinfluenced food and drink, and many hours were spent in the middle of the dance floor, relaxing and simply enjoying each other’s company.

We loved bringing the Rising Sun to you all, and we know that this year’s event is going to be outstanding!
