PROBE
UNIVERSITY DENTAL STUDENT’S SOCIETY MAGAZINE
The President’s Farewell

I’ll keep this brief (as usual). Another year has flown by and here we are again at the final issue of Probe for 2018. It’s been another stellar year for UDSS, and I do hope that you felt that we were able to serve our purpose in improving the student experience within the UWA Dental School.
Once again we were able to maintain another jam-packed calendar of events and initiatives. Some even grew in popularity - Journal Club saw a significant growth in attendance, demonstrating once again that UWA Dental School students are interested in benefiting from a variety of UDSS initiatives. All our initiatives were made possible through the efforts of the 2018 Committee so thanks once again to all committee members for their amazing contributions this year. As usual, I can’t thank our sponsors enough for their support as it allows UDSS to have the financial flexibility and freedom that other clubs and societies only dream of.
Thanks to Chris and the 2017 Committee for laying down the foundations for us, and good luck to Ruohan and the 2019 Committee i’m sure you will all deliver another amazing year.
To the graduating cohort, all the best for whatever lies ahead, and to all the other students, see you all soon!
Finally thanks to this year’s Media reps for taking care of this year’s issues of Probe and giving us something to read!
Happy holidays and safe New Years.
Paul

UDSS Soccer

2018 marked the inauguration of the InterFaculty Football Association (IFFA). This group was formed to facilitate social sport and friendly competition between various faculties across universities in WA. The faculties involved include UWA Dentistry, Medicine, Podiatry, UWA ECOMS, Curtin Medicine, as well as various faculties from Notre Dame University.
UDSS was more than happy to take part in this activity as it allowed our students to find time outside the dental school and get active amidst our busy curriculum. This sporting platform also provided a great opportunity to interact with students of other professions, particularly other health professions such as Medicine and Podiatry. Lastly, the gathering of the UDSS Soccer Team forged great comradery amongst dental students of all cohorts as the team is well represented by students from DMD1 all the way up to DMD4. Thus fostering strong inter-year relationships in the dental school.
In Semester 1 of 2018, the UDSS team played 4 matches and came out victorious 3 out of the 4 times. We proudly defeated Curtin Med, UWA Podiatry and UWA Medicine, but unfortunately fell short against ECOMS.
In Semester 2, the UDSS team has only played twice. The rematch against UWA Medicine, unfortunately favoured the opposing team. Meanwhile, the 2nd and most recent match against UWA Podiatry proved the brilliance of our UDSS Soccer team by coming out with another win. At least 1 more match is scheduled for the year against Notre Dame University.
I urge everyone to come show your support for the UDSS team at the remaining matches. They have represented our school with great pride and dedication and have proven their dominance throughout the entire competition.

This November, a few brave dental students decided to venture into the unknown and grow out their moustaches for the whole month! The “No Shave November” or “Movember” campaign aims to raise awareness of men’s mental health issues as well as testicular and prostate cancer. The dental school movember team managed to not only get everyone thinking about men’s health by strutting their moustaches around campus but also raise more than $500 in donations. We hope this tradition grows within our school and are looking forward to doing it all over again next year.
