Bodyweight Tabata Yoga with Shannon: Who needs free weights when there is body weight?! Literally take this workout anywhere! An approach to high intensity interval training, participants can expect to execute Yoga based strength and stretch poses in 30 second to 1 minute bouts of hard work followed by 15 second or 30 second recovery periods. A Yoga mat is suggested.

Mindful Mat Stretching with Charissa: Stretching is helpful in increasing blood flow to the muscles and helps joints to achieve full range of motion, but what happens when we mindfully move through stretches? Not only do we become more aware of what is going on with our bodies when we mindfully stretch but we also increase the benefits of stretching! This class is designed to relax and relieve tired muscles and joints. A mat is suggested.

Attack 360 with Ashley: Attack HIIT! HIIT or high intensity interval training involves short cycles of intense, hard work, interspersed with short recovery periods. In intervals of 45 seconds of work, followed by a 15 second interval of recovery, participants will engage in cardiovascular, strength and core exercises for a total body experience! Heavy weights will be utilized with moderate weights available should exhaustion occur. A mat is suggested.

Tabata Cardio Bootcamp with Ashley: It’s an express Tabata workout! In intervals of 20 seconds of hard work followed by 10 second cycles of recovery, participants will use bodyweight to achieve maximal cardiovascular results in a short amount of time. Exercises like squat jumps, jumping jacks and even planks will be explored. A mat is suggested. Abdominals in the Chair with Charissa: It’s the new Tik Tok talk! Can an abdominal workout really be achieved in a chair? Why of course it can! Using light to heavy weights or no weights at all, participants can expect to execute various abdominal exercises in a chair! When watching tv or sitting in a stationary office chair, you too can get ab strong! This is a class you “ab”solutely don’t want to miss!

Total Body Strength with Ashley: Using a mat and medium to heavy weights, this class is a HIIT workout not to miss! In intervals of 45 seconds of hard work followed by 15 second intervals of recovery, attendees will challenge the major muscle groups for bone health and fat oxidation! Low impact and high intensity.

This hybrid Hatha Vinyasa class will surely induce a mind body connection! A Yoga mat will be utilized.

Mindful Muscle Flow with Charissa: Get sculpted mindfully! With conscious breathing and movement, participants will focus on quality of form and alignment while flowing through exercises designed to strengthen the major muscle groups. Medium to heavy weights and a mat will be utilized. Don’t miss this class created to combat fat!

Inner + Outer Thighs with Ashley: Using a mat and moderate to strong loop bands, prepare to strengthen and sculpt the abductors and adductors! 45 seconds of work followed by 15 second recovery cycles will guide this low impact, high intensity interval class! Get hip to toning the hips!

Yoga for a Resilient Lower Back with Sandy: Yoga can be a complimentary approach to alleviate and prevent chronic lowbackpain.Thegoalofthisclassistorealign,createspace, re educate, and stabilize the lower back. Stretch & Meditate with Charissa: Unwind from stress and move through easy and soft stretches followed by calming meditation. Every movement will be guided by deep breathing techniques that are sure to prepare participants for the closing mind body experience! A mat is suggested.

Tabata Strength with Charissa: Take fat loss to new levels with Tabata training! Due to the short, quick repetitions of hard work using heavy weights followed by short recovery cycles, participants will reach exhaustion for maximal fitness results in minimal time. Expect to oxidize fat for hours after this class! Medium to heavy weights and mat suggested.

Yoga Strong with Shannon: Build strength, flexibility and increase balance with this non traditional Yoga class! Using light to heavy weights and a mat, participants will move through a Hatha influenced practice guided by pranayama (breath control) and asanas (Yoga poses).

Yoga for Athletes with Shannon: Increasing strength, flexibility and balance are the desired outcomes of this non traditional approach to Yoga! Participants will utilize light to heavy free weights and a mat in executing various asanas (poses). Begin the weekend feeling calm and strong!

Stripped Down Cardio Tabata with Ashley: No weights needed for this class! In intervals of 20 seconds of hard work followed by a recovery cycle of 10 seconds, participants will execute cardiovascular exercises that are sure to elevate the heart rate. Engage in a low impact workout that involves no jumping while maintaining intensity! A mat will be utilized.

Yoga for Mental Well Being with Sandy: Research has shown that yoga can benefit an individual’s mental well being, including reducing stress and anxiety. Yogic tools such as asana (Yoga poses), meditation, and breathing techniques can aide in balancing the nervous system and quieting the mind. Students will learn gentle yoga poses to release tension, breathing techniques to decrease stress and meditation to promote relaxation. The limbs radiate from the core and assist in mobility and stability for balance and postural health. During this workout, participants will utilize light to heavy weights and a mat to fire up the center!

Mindful Stretch and Flow with Charissa: Lengthen and relieve tired muscles and joints! Flowing through stretches with awareness of breath and movement makes for a mindfulness experience! Participants will involve the major and minor muscle groups. A mat is suggested.

Bendy Body with Shannon: It’s all about functional movement, stretching and strength during this low impact fitness experience! Using light weights, participants can expect to engage in exercises designed to increase flexibility and range of motion for better health and quality of life. A mat is suggested. What better way is there to energize the day and weekend?

Mindful Movement Dance with Charissa: What dance movements can originate from a freely imaginative mind? What dance choreography can be created with mind body connection? The mind is powerful and this class experience can create ripples that bring our greatest desires to reality! Prepare to let go of inhibitions while moving to ambient music. Don’t miss this exhilarating special edition workout!

Recovery Yoga with Shannon: Prepare to perform Yoga poses designed for desk dwellers, athletes and hard workers! Moving thru 5 Yoga poses of different variations, participants will connect to the breath and body awareness to achieve muscle and joint relief. The instructor’s desire is for all in attendance to leave the practice feeling calm and rejuvenated. A mat is suggested for this restorative Yoga class.

Yoga for Mobility: Hips, Knees, and Feet with Leslie: The body is an amazing vessel, built to carry us throughout life with strength and grace. This 45 minute class is designed up gently open the lower half of the body to give us a stronger foundation to move from. Leslie will lead students through a slow flow of hip openers, focus on the stability of the knee joint, and the ins and outs of the foundation the feet. Required: please bring a tennis ball to this class. You are also welcome to bring yoga blocks, a pillow, or a rolled blanket for hip openers. Register for the class go here Passcode: 505554

Core Challenge with Charissa: Every exercise will be performed for a duration of 60seconds! That’s right. The core doesn’t just involve the abdomen but is essentially the trunk. In half an hour, participants will execute strengthening exercises designed to achieve a strong center. One medium to heavy weight and a mat will be utilized.

Gliding Disc Challenge with Ashley: Paper plates or gliding discs are needed to participate in this high intensity, low impact experience! Intervals of 30 seconds of work followed by a 10 second recovery cycle will guide this class. A fitness mat will be utilized. Sculpt on the Floor with Charissa: It’s a low impact approach to toning the body! Using bodyweight and/or light to heavy weights, participants can expect to engage in exercises that strengthen the major and minor muscle groups! This total body workout is an excellent way to get stronger while remaining on the floor. A mat is suggested.

Slow Flow Yoga with Shannon: Assist the bodyin achieving balance and stability with this measured approach to Vinyasa! Using a mat and a block, participants will move through various asanas (poses) guided by controlled breathing (pranayama) and spatial awareness. Some of the benefits of this class include increased flexibility, attention to neglected muscles and joints and improved range of motion in daily activities. No Yoga experience is necessary.

Transverse Abdominis with Ashley: Strengthen the low belly to support the low back! What is the Transverse Abdominis? The Transverse Abdominis is the deepest layer of abdominal muscles, wrapping around the torso from front to back and from the rib cage to the pelvis, acting as a corset to stabilize the lumbar spine. In intervals of 45 seconds of hard work followed by 15 second intervals of recovery, participants can expect to execute exercises designed to build strong lower abdominals. A mat is suggested.

Total Body Tabata with Ashley: It’s a Tabata takeover! Targetingmajorandminormusclegroups,thishigh intensity, low impact class is sure to get the blood flowing and the heart going! All exercises will be performed upright using moderate to heavy weights. 20 second intervals of hard work followed 10 second intervals of recovery will guide the cadence of the workout. Get Tabata toned!

Upright Abs with Ashley: Using medium to heavy weight, attendees can expect to engage in intervals of 45 seconds of work followed by a 15 second interval of recovery. Ab muscles are important in supporting the spine and in holding internal organs in place. While remaining in an upright standing position, various ab exercises will be explored.

The race will be held on Wednesday, September 21st in front of Bldg. 1, beginning at 11:30am. Teams in the first heat are encouraged to arrive beginning at 11am to collect their bibs. A pre race warm up will be offered by an R&W fitness instructor and opening remarks will be given Mrs. Colleen McGowan (Director ORS), and Mr. David Browne (R&W CEO/Co President)

Seeking New NIH R&W Board Members

TheNIHR&Wislookingfornewboardmembers.Doyouhave an interest in helping your employee morale association grow? Bring your thoughts and fresh ideas to board meetings and help the NIH R&W Association reach new levels. New members would be required to participate in bi monthly meetings of up to one hour, provide ideas to improve the R&W, assist in growing the R&W’s presence throughout NIH and build R&W membership. 37th NIH Institute Relay It’s time for the 37th NIH Institute Challenge Relay. Can your team defeat the two time defending champs “Worktime’s Over”? Start gathering your team together so you can pick your team name and of course, start training. The rules are the same…the Relay consists of teams of five runners each whom run a loop around Bldg. 1. All Institutes, Centers, Divisions, and Contractors are invited to enter as many teams as they wish. Each team must have a variety of gender representation Put on your thinking caps and think creatively about your team name. Examples from last year include: Laevis Alone, Struck by Whitening, The Champ Ions, There is no eye in team, Ctrl Alt Elite, Not Fast JustFurious,DoyouevenformulateBro?,CryoJenicsandFlu Fighters. Take the next few weeks to gather for jogs around Bldg. 1 or join the fitness centers at Bldg. 53 or Rockledge for a run on the treadmill or elliptical machine. The relay is a great reason to set a new fitness goal while preparing for a fun event. However, the most important part of the race is to have fun and enjoy the company of your fellow NIHers. Remember, contractor teams are welcome as well as more than one team per Institute. Get your sneakers ready for some action. It’s going to be fun! Register your team for $20 for Heat 1 or Heat 2. We are excited to announce the NIH Recreation & Welfare Fitness and Wellness Program Fitness Centers have opened at Rockledge II and Building 53. Both facilities are now accessible 24/7 with a NIH badge once membership is purchased and processed. An email confirmation will be sent once the NIH badge has access. The facilities will be staffed by R&W Fitness Staff during daytime hours. Access to facilities will require Membership and available is for purchase online only with a special return to the workplace offer of ½ off the start up fee thru September 30th. The Building 31 fitness center will reopen upon completion of the men’s and women’s locker room renovation project. Stay tuned for updates!
