“Fitness for You” October 2023 Virtual & In-Person Fitness Descriptions:

(10/11) 12pm Circuit 360 with Ashley: Combine strength, cardio, and core training for a total body experience! Participants will perform exercises in intervals of 30 seconds of work followed by 10 revolutionary workouts!

(10/2) 6am Fall Functional Fitness| Focus: Bracing with Shannon: Bracing is a technique activated by stabilizing the spine and torso. The instructor will guide participants into bracing and also lead participants through functional exercises while bracing. Incorporate bracing into daily activities for spinal support! Light to heavy weights and a mat suggested.

(10/12) 12:15pm Stretch and Flow with Charissa: Retreat from the desk and get stretched! Participants will engage in moving stretches while flowing through seamless transitions for a total body experience. A sticky mat will be provided. Shoes not suggested.

All levels are welcome!

(10/3) 12:15pm Barre Repetitions with Charissa: It’s a transformative, low-impact, high-intensity workout for all levels! Barre focuses on lengthening and strengthening the body simultaneously by engaging in ballet-inspired exercises. Prepare to activate the core with strong posture while performing repetitive kicks and releves to exhaustion! A mat and light weights will be utilized. (10/4) 12pm Balance Sculpt with Ashley: Balanced is the new healthy! The ability to balance is connected to longer life and is an element of physical fitness. Focusing on mobility and strength, participants will execute specialized exercises in intervals of 45 seconds of work followed by 15-second recovery intervals. Moderate to heavy hand weights are suggested. Commit and get fit!

1pm Hispanic Heritage Month - Latin Dance Party with Charissa (In-person only) RKL II Rm. 220-B: We’re going to salsa y merengue then bachata to the end! Participants can prepare to move through basic Latin dance sequences for this special edition culture experience! It will be non-stop movement galore! (10/13) 6am Fall Fit HIIT! with Shannon: In intervals of 30 seconds of work followed by 15-second recovery periods, attendees will engage in cardiovascular and strength conditioning exercises. High-intensity interval training involves alternating short cycles of intense anaerobic exercise with brief recovery time to the point of exhaustion. Don’t miss HIIT! Light to heavy weights and a mat suggested.

(10/5) 12:15pm Flow Stretch with Charissa: Seamless transitions will guide this class dedicated to stretching the total body! Release stress and ignite cellular energy with a stretch for the major and minor muscle groups. Flow Stretch is designed to leave participants feeling relaxed and rejuvenated! A fitness mat is needed.

12pm Banded Abs + Glutes with Ashley: Grab light to strong resistance bands for this class and get banded! In intervals of 45 seconds of work followed by 15 seconds of recovery, participants will engage in abdominal and gluteal exercises. By strengthening the muscle groups of the abdomen and gluteus, the back is benefited as the abdomen and glutes support the back. A mat and loop bands are needed for this class. Don’t miss it!

(10/6) 6am Yoga for Relaxation with Shannon: Combine breathing, Yoga asanas (poses) and mind-body connection, for a total body experience! This class aims to ease tension and stress in the body. Hatha-based, participants will perform 5-7 poses with a focus on opening the hips, shoulders, spine and hamstrings. A Yoga mat is suggested.

(10/16) 6am Total Body + Stability Ball with Shannon: Startle stale fitness routines with stability ball resistance! Using a Swiss ball, participants will perform diversified exercises for a challenging total body workout experience! This sculpting and strengthening class is one not to miss! A mat is optional.

12pm Cardio Tabata with Ashley: Take it up a notch with Tabata! Tabata is the high-intensity interval training model that is taking the world by storm! Scientifically proven to elicit maximal health and fitness benefits in a short amount of time, Tabata has emerged as a format favorite among fitness professionals. In intervals of 20 seconds of work followed by 10-second intervals of recovery, attendees will execute cardiovascular exercises at best effort for a minimal duration of time. Don’t miss this life-changing workout! A fitness mat will be utilized.

(10/17) 12:15pm Jazzy-cise with Charissa: Get moving while having fun with jazzy exercise! Using light weights, participants will grapevine and 2-step through this workout! Sculpt and strengthen the body with repetition-based movement! Participants remain upright throughout the class.

It will be non-stop movement galore! 6pm Work & Family Month - Family Yoga with Amy: It’s a family affair! Family Yoga increases familial bonding and allows for an opportunity to build fun memories! Using a Yoga mat, the instructor will guide attendees through a series of Yoga asanas (poses). Whether a family of 1 or 5, all can join and participate.

1pm Yoga with Shannon (In-person only) Bldg. 53: Synch the breath and asanas (poses) for a fully intentional Hatha class experience! This practice will consist of Yoga asanas (poses) that are designed to increase flexibility, joint range of motion, and body awareness. Participants are encouraged to find proper alignment and consciousness in each pose. A Yoga mat is suggested. (10/18) Work & Family Month – Yoga at Your Desk with Allison: No time for yoga? No worries! This month, you have the opportunity to learn how you can easily sneak in key yoga poses and stretches by setting aside just a few minutes to practice yoga at your desk. No need to change your clothes or roll out your mat. Instead, you just need the willingness to take a computer break and allow yourself 3-5 minutes of gentle stretching, mindful movement and breathwork.

12pm Tabata Strength with Ashley: Supercharge your strength workout with Tabata Strength! In bursts of 20 seconds of work followed by 10-second recovery intervals, participants can expect to execute strength exercises to exhaustion or near exhaustion. Moderate to heavy weights are suggested to gain full benefits of high-intensity interval training. A mat will be utilized. (10/19) 12:15pm Chair Stretch + Breathing Break with Charissa: Command control of the day with seated stretching and breath work! Attendees will engage in gentle stretching intermingled with breathing exercises. It’s the ultimate way to de-stress in the middle of the day! Stationary chair suggested. 1pm Pilates + Supplemental Stretch with Charissa (Inperson only) RKL II Rm. 220-B: While Pilates is designed to strengthen and lengthen the body simultaneously, many pupils have difficulty executing exercises due to muscle and joint restrictions. This class will include post-movement stretches for activated muscle groups. A mat will be provided. (10/20) 6am Yoga for Athletes with Shannon: Not just for athletes, this Yoga class aids in improving muscle and joint range of motion, balance, and flexibility. Enhance athletic performance and/or the ability to perform daily activities! A non-traditional Yogic experience, expect to engage in a total body practice. Light to heavy weights and Yoga mat used. 12pm Upright Abs with Ashley: Get abdominally fit! For repetitions of 45 seconds of work followed by 15-second recovery cycles, participants will engage in performance of exercises like standing crunches, for abdominal health. A strong abdomen is needed to support the back. Get ab strong! (10/23) 6am Stability Spooktacular with Shannon: Before the sun rises, creep into stability exercises just in time for any potential horror nights ahead! Skills like balance and core strengthening will be performed for a mortally fulfilling experience! Don’t miss this special-edition stability workout! Light to heavy weights and a mat suggested. (10/24) 12:15pm Barre Body with Charissa: The “Barre Body” is lean and strong! Focusing on lengthening and strengthening the body simultaneously, repetitive movements performed with self-resistance techniques will be explored. Prepare to perform 32-count repetitions of each exercise! Barre is ballet-inspired and encourages grace, fluidity, and ease of overall motion. A mat and light weights will be used. 1pm Yoga Strength with Shannon (In-person only) Bldg. 53: It’s a fusion of Yoga and strength training! Yoga Strength is a non-traditional, Hatha-based practice designed to increase flexibility and strength. Participants focus on transitions and poses guided by breathing and mind-body connection. A Yoga mat is suggested. 6pm Work & Family Month - Family Fitness Feud with Charissa: It’s a battle for bragging rights! Who is fittest in the family? Participants will need a pen or pencil, a stack of post-it notes or squares of paper and a fitness mat or towel. In 60 second intervals, each family member will get challenged in seeking the title of “Fittest in the Family”! The family member with the most wins upon completion of the competition will take the title! Invite friends and family!

(10/25) 12pm Gliding Discs with Ashley: Add an element of excitement to any routine workout by incorporating gliding discs! Lateral lunges, reverse lunges and mountain climbers are all exercises that will be performed during this class! For intervals of 30 seconds of work followed by 10-second recovery intervals, participants can expect to increase the heart rate for aerobic health benefits. Gliding discs or paper plates and a mat will be utilized. (10/26) 12:15pm Towel Stretch with Charissa: A hand towel that spans the length of the arm is needed for this class! Attendees can gain a deeper stretch with the assistance of a hand towel or strap. Each stretch will be held for at least 15 seconds for 2 cycles. Tap into an exhilarating towel stretch experience! A fitness mat is also suggested.

1pm Cycle Sessions with Charissa (In-person only) RKL II Rm. 220-B: Coast through the holidays with cycling! A lowimpact, high intensity workout, indoor cycling provides cardiovascular benefits that can be maintained year-round! Cyclists will embark upon a mixed terrain ride for all levels. (10/27) 6am Yoga Strong + Weights with Shannon: Not a traditional Yoga class, Yoga Strong involves using light to heavy weights while engaging in Yogic asanas (poses). By performing intentionally, participants will gain awareness and consciousness that can be translated into daily activities. Mind-body connection and breathing are essential to this Hatha based practice. A Yoga mat and hand weights will be utilized. 12pm Total Body Tabata with Ashley: Go into the weekend with no regrets! Finish the week with this Friday edition of Tabata fitness! Remaining upright throughout the duration of class, participants will utilize moderate to heavy weights to engage in strengthening exercises for the major and minor muscle groups. Bursts of 20-second intervals of hard work followed by 10-second intervals of recovery will be explored. (10/30) 6am Scary Edition: Strength & Stability with Shannon: Get so strong it’s scary! Grab a costume and get pumped for unexpected thrills and chills! Prepare for the heart rate to increase as exercises are performed! Light to heavy weights and a mat will be utilized. 11:30am Family & Work Month - Restore with Non-Sleep Deep Rest with Allison: This restorative yoga class includes the powerful practice of non-sleep deep rest to boost the relaxation response and your overall vitality. No experience needed, just a comfortable seat (chair or floor) to sit and/or lie down. (10/31) 12:15pm Kick-away Kickboxing with Charissa: Let’s kick it! Learn authentic kickboxing during this 30minute class! Proper execution of jabs, hooks, the uppercut, as well as front kicks, back kicks and roundhouse kicks will be explored. Protect your person and kick-away! It’s a total body workout not to miss! 1pm Yoga for Fitness Enthusiasts with Shannon (Inperson only) Bldg. 53: Stretch the muscle groups necessary to daily activity. In just 30 minutes, participants can expect to execute Yoga asanas (poses) that aid in stability, increase flexibility, improve joint range of motion, and illicit body awareness. A Yoga mat is suggested.


Work and Family Month 2023

Between work, family, and personal life, we juggle multiple competing responsibilities every day. Finding a healthy balance among them is essential to our own personal wellbeing which is defined by Gallup, into five essential categories: Social, Community, Career, Physical and Financial Well-Being. The Office of Resource Services (ORS), Office of Human Resources and NIH-Wide Mental Health and Well-being Action Team have planned over 50 virtual activities during the month of October and made available appropriate resources designed specifically to help you learn more about the numerous NIH resources available to assist you with your current and future well-being, work-life, family and career needs. There is something for EVERYONE, including contractors. Activities and resources are available in many formats: live webinars, free fitness classes, Foil the Flu clinics, websites, PDFs, and archived webinars and vignettes for viewing when you have time. Be sure to check the webpage frequently and bookmark it as info will be added and updated throughout the month. The website can be accessed by any computer or iPhone/android. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn how NIH cares for and supports its workforce! Events and resources are divided into themes that target a specific phase during your work and family life cycle. Vanpooling Is Economical and Environmentally Friendly

Openings are available in the vanpool from Hagerstown and Frederick to Bethesda. This 10-passenger van is leased thru Enterprise Vanpool. The vanpool leaves Hagerstown Park and Ride at 5:30am for a 7am to 4pm work shift on Bethesda Campus. The van leaves NIH at 4:15pm Monday – Friday. Full-time NIH Employees who turn in their parking hangers are eligible for the Transhare Program. Contractors are welcome but must make subsidy payments thru the Enterprise portal each month. If interested contact Rich Buckland at 304582-3113. Openings available in the Owings Mill vanpool. Pick-up at 5:30am from Owings Mills Metro Station (10309 Grand Central Ave, Owings Mills, MD 21117). WorkLife@NIH Information Fair October 25th – Bldg. 10 South Lobby

Join us in celebrating National Work and Family Month in October. SAVE THE DATE for the WorkLife@NIH Resource Fair on Wednesday, October 25th, in Bldg. 10, South Lobby, from 10 am – 1 pm to learn first-hand about NIH well-being programs, visit over 25 information tables and access NIH and community resources. Keep an eye out for posters, flyers and the ORS October Events Snapshot global email advertising a calendar of Work and Family Month activities scheduled throughout October to assist you with the essential five areas of well-being: mental/physical, financial, social/family, career and community. R&W Holiday Bazaar

The R&W plans to host its annual Holiday Bazaar on Wednesday, December 6th and Thursday, December 7th from 10am - 2pm in Bldg. 10 on the FAES Terrace. We hope to offer a mixture of some of your favorite vendors and new vendors for this two-day event with over 50 vendors in total. Bldg. 31 Fitness Center Has Re-Opened

R&W NIH Fitness Program is pleased to announce that Bldg. 31 Fitness Center has reopened. Reopening Membership Special Extended: Join thru October 31st, waive $40 Start-up (all membership options) +1 month (6 month and Annual memberships only) Since the Bldg. 31 Fitness Center has been shut down for such a long period of time, we are requiring all previous members whose memberships were suspended because of the pandemic to fill out a new application and contract in order to have current information on file. Contact Sherrell Freeman and she will assist you with reactivating any memberships and reestablishing access suspended in Bldg. 31 Fitness Center. Please note you will need to reapply for a new membership. If you are a current member utilizing Bldg. 53 or Rockledge Fitness Center and would like access to Bldg. 31 Fitness Center contact Sherrell Freeman for access. For anyone interested in becoming a new member of the Bldg. 31 Fitness Center, please visit the R&W website for information on membership fee options, application, and link to make payment. Once payment is received and the completed forms are provided and access to the facility is granted, you will receive an email confirming your membership is complete and you have access to the facility. Join The NEI 5K Walk/Run/Roll! Wednesday, October 18th – Bldg. 1

The NEI 5K Walk/Run/Roll takes place in front of Bldg. 1 on Wednesday, October 18th and promises to be a fun, safe way for us to get together. Enjoy the Fall weather with your colleagues at NIH, get some steps, meet the NIH Police K-9 unit, and learn about the NIH blood bank and a family dinner program at the NIH Children’s Inn. Keyworkers for the Combined Federal Campaign will also be available to chat about charities. Prior to the race a fitness instructor from the NIH R&W Fitness & Wellness Program will lead a warm-up at 11:45am and will be followed by welcome remarks from NEI Director Michael F. Chiang. The actual walk/run/roll will start at 12:10pm. Participants will exit campus and circumnavigate the perimeter of campus and return thru security. Remember to bring your NIH PIV card to re-enter. 38th NIH Institute Relay Results

We did it! Another successful Institute Relay! This annual tradition brought out the inner competitor in everyone and sparked the creative nerve as well. It was great to see so many NIHers participate, so many in fact that it tied for our 3rd largest participation with 107 teams running and a new champion being crowned. The NIH Community Chorus

The NIH Community Chorus performs in two NIH Community Orchestra concerts each season. The two groups have recently performed works by Brahms, Berlioz, Mozart, Handel, and Copland. Chorus rehearsals have begun at Saint Mark Presbyterian Church (10701 Old Georgetown Road Rockville, MD 20852). The chorus is rehearsing music to join the NIH Community Orchestra for a December holiday concert. There are openings in all voice parts, with tenors especially needed. Dues support chorus operations. For Fall 2023, choristers must be masked during rehearsals. Singers interested in joining this excellent community chorus are invited to contact the director, Bob Johnson, by phone at 301654-3380 or by email. There are no auditions, but the director may choose to conduct a vocal review to ensure that incoming singers will be singing the part that best suits the individual’s voice.


2023 NIH Combined Federal Campaign Give Happy

This year, the National Institute on Nursing Research (NINR) will lead the 2023 NIH Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) under the leadership of NINR Director, Dr. Shannon Zenk. The CFC is the federal government’s largest workplace giving campaign, and an opportunity to support one or more of the 5,000 participating charities. The campaign began on September 1st and ends on January 15, 2024. The National CFC theme is “Give Happy” which highlights the power of giving together and how that brings happiness to people and communities in need. The CFC will be a virtual campaign again this year and will provide several opportunities to learn more about the CFC and to stay connected with NIH CFC activities. The goal for the NIH community this year is to exceed $1.2M and support the extraordinary work that charities continue to do in our local communities and abroad. Upcoming Events CFC Kickoff - Participate in the virtual NIH CFC Kickoff, Wednesday, October 4th from 11am - 11:30am to learn more about the campaign and hear from two charities about their important missions. Fall Charity Fair and Directors Challenge Pumpkin Decorating Contest – Join the virtual Fall Charity Fair and Directors Challenge Pumpkin Decorating Contest on Thursday, October 26th from 11am – 1pm. Two CFC charities will talk about their mission and show how your generous donations make a difference. Please join us for all the fun and to vote for your favorite pumpkin! R&W Corporate Sponsor Fair October 5th – Bldg. 10 South Lawn

The final NIH R&W corporate sponsor fair of 2023 will take Thursday, October 5th from 10am – 2pm on the South Lawn of Bldg. 10. Learn about a variety of local business and discounts some have to offer. Participants at this fair includes KitchenSaver, The Adventure Park at Sandy Spring, Southern Management, RK Tongue Insurance, The Barrett, Ameritech Construction - Super Windows, Gutter Helmet, NIH Federal Credit Union, Turning Point Financial, Fed Advantage and Verizon. Make sure to visit the vendors to be entered for door prizes. In the event of rain, the show will take place the following week.

NIH is one of the leading CFC contributors in the area, but we still need your help. We can’t meet our goal without you! Any amount you can give helps those in need! NIH Philharmonia Presents “Epic Moments” – October 14th

The NIH Philharmonia, under the direction of Dr. Nancia D'Alimonte, presents “Epic Moments” at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church (917 Montrose Road – Bethesda, MD) on Saturday, October 14th at 7pm. Performances include S. Coleridge-Taylor - Petite Suite de Concert and Mahler Symphony No. 1 (Titan).
